ThinkPad X1 Extreme Linux Fingerprint Drivers?

Q: ThinkPad X1 Extreme Linux Fingerprint Drivers?

I have recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Exteme and it is running Pop!_OS 18.10. I was hoping the find a linux driver for the finger print reader. Lenovo only seems to have w\Windows drivers listed. Is there any plan to release Linux drivers by any chance? Or third party drivers that may work? Thanks

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Does the X1E support S3 sleep under Linux? It can't wake from suspend in Ubuntu Linux 18.10. Do we have to wait for Lenovo to offer such support through a BIOS update (like the X1C6) before wake from suspend or hibernate is possible under Linux?

Just fired up my new X1 Extreme and I'm having an issue getting drivers for the NVIDIA 1050.  I can only download drivers from Lenovo and not NVIDIA?  I need minimum driver 416.94 but I can only get 416.16 from lenovo.  I've tried geforce experience but it says I have the latest driver (416.16).  Anyone have away around this? Thanks!

A:ThinkPad X1 Extreme Nvidia 1050 Drivers

What a pain.  I've downloaded the driver from NVIDIA that I need and I can't install it on this machine.  I went to device managment and tried updating the driver that way and I get a message stating something about "windows says you have the best driver"...what a pain.

Hello,Today I updated my Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen with the latest drivers recommended by Lenovo Vantage program, as well as the latest Windows 10 Pro updates. After conducting those updates, I can no longer sign in using the Fingerprint sensor. When I open the Device Manager to check the status of the Biometric Device driver, it shows the following message: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"The sign in option using the fingerprint does not even show up in the Windows settings for Sign In. Things I have already tried:1) Update the driver through the Device Manager 2) Download and reinstall the fingerpring driver from the Lenovo drivers website3) Reset fingerprint settings in the BIOS and making sure it is enabled4) Change configuration in "gpedit.msc" -> computer configuration -> administrative templates -> windows components -> biometrics -> allow the use of biometrics and allow users to log on using biometrics set to enabled None of the 4 attempts above solved the problem. Can anyone please provide any solution for this case? It looks like a lot of people have been experiencing this issue and no one from Lenovo provided a clear and definitive solution. The latest drivers must have bugs and, in my opinion, Lenovo must stop distributing them until this issue is fixed. Thank you very much.Best.

I know you have a X1 carbon and not T570 but did you see the below post from a Lenovo employee?  Specifically the part about SGX?  It fixed my problem on my TP25.

See subject.  Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes.  Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C.  I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied.  Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there.  I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock).    Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

Hello, I've recently acquired an X1 Extreme with i5-8300H & 8 GB of RAM. The fans are very loud & come on relatively frequently although I'm currently using it for light browsing, syncing files over the network and other low-impact activities. I've switched off anthing that would use any more power than necessary (unnecessary background services, switched to optimised for battery, switched off dGPU, configured BIOS 1.19, etc.). The machine is on a laptop stand & it's about 20 where I live. I've undervolted the processor to -0.150V & followed nearly all the advice on these forums & Reddit. I've stopped short of repasting since it's simply not normal that I feel like I'm working on a jet engine whilst not doing intensive work with the laptop. The following video shows Intel's XTU's CPU use at +-25% & a package temperature of about 65. I can hear that noise from the other side of my apartment!https://www.dropbox.com/s/t4oxkszx8de8l3o/20190506_150636.mp4?dl=0 The other problem I have is with the fingerprint scanner which virtually never works. I've tried creating several fingerprint profiles & resetting the old ones. Any pointers to how I could solve any of the above problems would be great. Thank you!

Hi,I was wondering, whether there are actually some Lenovo guys around, or at least people who can get in touch with them. Many people have been trying to get the new fingerprint reader (by Validity / Synaptic) to run under Linux. However it seems, that there simply is no driver around.I'm talking about the fancy new fingerprint reader found in the current Thinkpad generation (Yoga X1, X1 Carbon, X260, X460, T460s, T460p).The linux community already tried to develop some driver, however it seems, that the traffic is encrypted. The only, however very tiresome possibility would probably be to port the Windows driver... See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94536 for infos. However in the recent years Lenovo did quite some good work for Linux support, thus I was wondering, whether it would be possible for this to continue. Greetings,grb19

edited typo in title - mod  (850-580)

I've shortlisted the T580 for a purchase, just wanted to ask what Lenovo's attitude to linux installs is. ThinkPads are well supported in Linux but how does that reflect in warranty provision, service etc? (obviosuly, service would not be expected for a custom installed OS like Linux).

I just wonder whether any issues may receive a "Oh, you installed Linux... tut tut... that is the problem." regardless of what issue one might have.

I've read that the fingerprint reader does not work in Linux. Is this still true ? If so, does that affect the NFC ? I ask because I noticed you can't select NFC without the fingerprint reader when configuring the system. I suspect that's because the NFC is provided by the fingerprint reader?

My girlfriend recently moved over from Australia to the U.S. and gave me her old laptop (a Toshiba Satellite M100) saying there were issues with it turning itself off, and lagging badly. So I wiped the drive (to fix the lag) and installed Linux instead of Windows on it. This did fix the lag, but not the turning itself off (I'm thinking this has something to do with the battery as it does it when you set it down sometimes). After installing Linux we had the hairbrain idea of inputting my fingerprint into the scanner as she can't remember the bios password. Anyways, after deciding to input my print, and putting Linux on the computer instead of Windows, she tells me that the only way she can remember how to input my print is from the security center on the Windows desktop. Not gonna help me any with it not having Windows. So my question is, is there anyway to input my print on Linux, or do I have to figure out the bios password? If it's figuring out the password, how do I do so?

Hi Everyone, I've installed Ubuntu 18.10 on my new-ish 4K X1E. I'm pretty happy with it - just about everything seems to work OK, and its performance compared to my W520 shows it's about 2.2x faster at video rendering (yes, I was hoping for more). But the current gotcha is that I can't just close the lid to put it to sleep and then open it again to wake it up. When I close the lid, it appears to sleep: the screen goes dark and the red light on the cover transitions to slow-blinks. But when I open the cover, the screen stays dark, and all I can do is long-press the power button to shut it down and restart. So I'm wondering if this problem is unique to Ubuntu, or does sleep/wake work on other Linux distributions? In particular, Pop!_OS has been proclaimed to work right out of the box: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2018/12/09/heres-the-best-linux-distro-for-your-lenovo-t... (The author says that sleep works - it does for me too - but does it wake up? LOL :-) If sleep/wake works for some other distribution, then perhaps it'll eventually be ported to Ubuntu - or is that just wishful thinking? Thanks! Jim

I recently purchased an X1 Extreme. I am a developer and only use Linux. I updated the BIOS to latest (1.12), installed Fedora 28, updated the NVidia driver to the lastet. I have had zero luck trying to get brightness control working (the brightness appears stuck at max). The system runs hot and worst of all the "suspend" does not work when the lid is closed which means that the laptop is useless. I've tried almost everything that I can find to solve these issues. My grub command line is: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="resume=/dev/mapper/fedora-swap rd.lvm.lv=fedora/root rd.lvm.lv=fedora/swap rhgb quiet rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau mem_sleep_default=deep acpi.ec_no_wakeup=1 thinkpad-acpi.brightness_enable=1" I also upgraded to Fedora 29 beta and latest kernel:Linux extreme 4.18.13-300.fc29.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Oct 10 17:22:50 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linuxto see if that would solve anything, but it only succeeded in making booting almost impossible, It only seems to work if I boot into single user mode and then exit out. Does anyone have this solved or know if there is a solution?

I've been eyeing this laptop for a while, and was disappointed to hear that things that I have seen work out of the box for years with Linux are broken on this laptop. Namely the touchpad. This only seems to be the case on the 15in model. The 13in is reported to work fine. It's unfortunate the Lenovo fails to realize that people who spend 2k on a laptop tend to be computer enthusiasts, many of whom run Linux.  I can amost guarentee the amount of RMAs they are going to get from this are going to cost more than the few hours it would take 1 or 2 developers to write a touchpad driver for Linux. This is the only convertable on the market with a good GPU so I might still get it and try to either write a driver or get it working through some other means. Has anyone else had any luck with the touchpad or the fingerprint reader on Linux?

I wasn't sure if this was the place for this but here goes.

when using the fingerprint scanner on a network with pasword changes every 90days, does the fingerprint scanner on a lenovo laptop synch properly with a newly updated password? I have a user here who changed the password but the fingerprint scanner did not seem to recognize the change since when you first set it up it asks for your current password. Once setup correctly all you have to do is scan your fingerprint and it logs you in.

Any info would be great.

Thanks,

I just got my new Thinkpad in and wanted to install a second drive with Linux on it.  The bios sees the drive and I've already installed the OS on it but when I chose it it won't boot.  It just keeps booting to the primary drive with WIndows 10 on it. Can anyone tell me if the WD SSD drives won't work for some reason in this computer?  The drives are listed as supported for the X1 I know.  Seems strange it would work in the X1 and not the X1 Extreme. Thanks, Glenn

I purchased an X1 Extreme (4K) a few months ago. I have run into a few issues and was hoping I could get some advice. For reference, I have observed these issues across multiple different Windows versions, GeForce driver versions, and Lenovo BiOS versions. I am happy to answer any follow-up questions in the comments. 1.When I have hybrid graphics enabled, I have observed significant stutter when scrolling in applications such as Google Chrome, Spotify, and more, especially when opening PDFs in Chrome. Turning off hybrid graphics resolves fixes this, but I was wondering if there was another option I had other than compromising my battery life by disabling hybrid graphics.2.When I keep the TrackPoint enabled, it occasionally begins moving the cursor on its own and keeps going for a few seconds, with no apparent way to regain control until it stops. While I can fix this by just turning off the TrackPoint, I enjoy using it and would like to know if there is a different solution to this issue. Thank you in advance!
