I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.
GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again. If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

I have tried most of the posts on the internet to fix this problem--this is under IE6--"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." The problem just suddenly appeared. I'm running a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop with Win XP Home, Service Pack 3 installed, 1 gb ram and a 40 gb HDD. Had McAffee Internet Security Suite preinstalled but removed it via REVO Uninstaller and have only Windows firewall enabled and NO anti-virus. I did try downloading with Windows firewall disbaled and still no success. I can navigate to a site like Google Chrome download page but then when I click on the download button, the error message appears. Also can't download Microsoft or Windows updates from either site, although, again, I can get through the "checking" phase. I've run Malwarebytes, A-Squared, and IObit 360 and removed about 13 traces of malware ranging from low risk to high risk, defragged and cleaned the reg, all to no avail. I originally had IE7 installed, read about rolling back to IE6 and doing the typical repair sequences, again to no avail. Supposedly IE8 fixes this, but I can't download it, although I did try the stand-alone installer of 15 MB without checking the "get updates" box. It loaded and installed and shows up as IE8 but still had the same problems. Then did a system restore back to before the IE8 install, rolled back to IE6 again... Read more

Mike, Always glad to help. But, if you hadn't asked I would never go anywhere near "Burstnet". I refused their cookie, but I'm still concerned about getting on more spam lists after going there. Do you know, for sure, how they handle visits to their site ? Thanks for any info you can provide.

fwiw- I would feel a lot more comfortable if you conducted the survey "in house". Obviously, there are control issues with that option.

A:re: Site Survey in Announcements Forum

I'm with ya on this one Slithy. I hate burstnet, and the way they have the survey setup, with an exe extension, it was fooling my poor download manager into thinking it was a download for every click I had to make.

At any rate, as long as it helps Mike, I'll do it, and clean my machine afterwards, just to make sure!

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2.

Just recently this has started happening. A separate opinion survey window opens unexpectedly when I start Firefox. It's a real nuisance. Is this an example of malware.

It opens in a separate window but there is no menu bar or address bar and when you expand it, the window gets large and all white, the survey part stays small. This is all there is:

Title bar: http://ad.insightexpressai.com - You're Invited - Mozilla Firefox

All of this now is inside the little box:

Your Opinion Matters (in big letters)
Please participate in a brief survey

big button : Yes, I'll Participate.
2 little buttons: No, thanks. Maybe later.

opinion-central

Does anybody know what this is and how to get rid of it? Should I push any of those buttons.

Thanks,

royeo

I have upgraded a Dell Latitude with a much larger HDD. I re installed Win XP and went directly to Windows to update all patches etc... Once all downloads were installed I clicked on internet icon and was brought directly to the Internet Options dialog box. I tried changing the web address here and still had the same problem. I might add that I also installed Office 2003 with no problems but during my windows updating I did see some updates for Office as well.

Could Office have made some changes? I've only downloaded Office once or twice and have never seen this before.

Another thought, while downloading, sp3 and IE8 were installed.

Hi,

Please try this scan:

Download OTL to your DesktopDouble click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

This could certainly be an indication of malware infection. Where does it go when it starts? If it goes to anywhere other than your home page, then it is almost a certainty your system is infected. I recommend you follow these instructions.

Internet explorer opens on its own, but no window appears i can just see it running in process manager(and sometimes hear the I.E clicking noise, as if its loading a page). If i close one another opens. i have it blocked through my firewall but its not ideal and seems to freeze up my computer from time to time. I did exactly as the guide said, but last night, i tried to run the gmer.exe it took hours and when i woke up the next day there was an error message saying corrupt files run chkdsk(dont remeber exact messages). I didnt and switched my computer off. then my computer wouldnt boot. i put the windows cd and ran repair and chkdsk through there and it booted up ok, so i have no log for gmer and not sure i should run it again. Thanks in advance for any help, perhaps it would be easier to just do a clean install?

Hello all, this is my first post here.I am having an issue with IE. It randomly opens windows. The biggest issue is that I don't even use IE, I use Firefox. I did a google search on the issue and came up with a closed post at "http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/128039/internet-explorer-opens-by-itself/"I read through it and followed the steps listed for SilverSol. Of the files listed to be uninstalled, I found CiD Help. I uninstalled the program and then rebooted. I then copy/pasted the line "C:\DOCUME~1\GINA~1.REG\APPLIC~1\INSIDE~1\Dent Base.exe" -uninstall into Run. Came up with an error saying that the file was not found. I Downloaded and ran Deljob.exe. It does not display any malicious sites just the MSN homepage. It does not do it constantly but, when it does occur, it will open like 3 or 4 of them. Also, I do not use Internet Explorer. I use firefox and chrome. I have tried numerous ad-ware and spyware scans but nothing has come up! I'd appreciate it if you folks could help me vanquish this menace!

I think I may have identified and solved my problem. A couple of programs (Sk0.exe, Sk1.exe) were running in a temp folder. Maybe Trojans? I deleted them in safe mode, along with a batch of other recent temp files, and as of now, Internet Explorer hasn't opened independently. My computer is also noticeably faster than it has been the last few days. If there's any other suspicious looking programs running in the log above, please let me know. Since the gmer scan didn't find any rootkits, maybe there's no other problems. Anyway, thanks for the look!!!

Hello all

A few weeks ago my internet explorer started randomly opening to my homepage and, if I was already browsing, it would redirect me to my homepage as well as opening up to 40-odd other windows. More often than not these pges are almost impossibe to close down and more will take their place when they do, this happens to the point where everything freezes and I have to force it to shutdown. I'm running Avast4 and Zonealarm alongside Spyware Blaster. I have scanned with Spybot, Ad-aware, Malwarebytes and others. All have shown nothing. I understand that this may be hardware as I do have a quick launch key for the internet but as far as i know this wouldn't cause the browser to return to the homepage....or would it? In anycase when I tried this key, even pressing it a dozen or so times, the pages were a lot easier to close down than when even only 6 pages open at random.

It seems to happen in spurts, and sometimes when I'm scanning for spyware, although this is pretty much all that I have done since the problem started.

Any help would be very greatfully recieved.

Thanks.

I have a laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. The first few days I had it, Internet Explorer worked fine. Then it malfunctioned. When you double click the IE shortcut it would open for a split second then close. When you went to the Start menu, Programs, it would do the same.

I downloaded and installed IE 8 64 bit from Microsoft's website. When I double click the IE 8 64 bit shortcut it opens fine! The problem is, I can't set IE 8 64 as my default browser. I get a Windows error message that says you can not set IE 8 64 as your default browser.

So I can open IE 8 64 manually but any link I click tries to open IE 8 (32 bit presumably) which still opens then immediately closes.

Please help!

You're going to have to edit the registry to do this..

use regedit and modify the following
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\IEXPLORE.EXE
Change the value to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command
Change the value - "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

Hi and welcome

Hijack This is running from the Temp folder.
It needs to be in a permanent folder on the hard drive.
It will not function properly from there and it cannot create and restore backups from there.

Redownload it here: http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Let it extract to C:\Program Files
Rerun it from there and post a new log.

So yea,
About a week ago my computer randomly started turning down the volume to 0, and then opening two copies of Internet Explorer, that start playing "Taylor Swift - 22" (not sure if relevant ?)

I've solved the internet explorer problem by disabling it, but it still turns down the volume to 0 every hour or so, which is quite frustrating..

I've spent several hours googleling this, cant find anything. So I turn to you ! Good people of techguy !
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi all!

I have a problem with Internet Explorer, when I try to open it you can see it in the task bar and click on it but it doesn't open on screen. I can see it flying to the left of the screen and opening out of site. I've tried uninstalling IE7 also tried to resize the taskbar as micrososft suggests or If resizing your Taskbar does not work, run Regedit and remove the following registry key values which are most likely corrupt. Do not delete the entire key, just the last word which will appear in the right hand pane.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\OldWorkAreas\OldWorkAreaRects

The latter one displays a value of 00 00 00 00 00 05 00 e2 03 00 00 fb ff 00....... after restarting and doesn't solve the problem

Any ideas?

As the title describes, I'm having trouble with what I have no idea to define as other than an evil virus from the deep reaches of internet hell.

At the moment, my firefox browser crashes upwards of 5 times in a day. My computer is slow, though not unbearably so. What ticks me off the most, though, is the fact that I have disabled access to Internet Explorer (to at least hinder what was going on until I could get someone to repair my computer), and I can hear clicking in the background of my computer's sound occasionally, as well as various advertisements being played (the last one I remember was Bing), and occasionally a box will pop up, prompting if I want to set Internet Explorer as my current browser. Seeing as how I disabled it, I'm really, really baffled. I can't see it in the task manager when I bring it up under the 'applications' tab.

At the moment, I own CCleaner, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Using the latter two brings up multiple problems, which I have removed, and usually with Malwarebytes, the computer has to restart in order to finish up the process. However, once I restart, I find that I have the same problems with the computer. Scanning again with Malwarebytes returns just as many, if not more, problems than before. I've used TDSS to check for rootkits, but nothing is ever returned.

Can I get some help, please?

Hi,First of all, I see you are running Teatimer.I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system. When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again. If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions. After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop. Then run ResetTeaTimer.exe.This will only take a few seconds.I don't believe your Malwarebytes is up to date though, so First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion may be outdated.Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again. The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed w... I have tried a reinstall and that didn't work. I am looking for what may have caused this. I have done multiple maleware scans, and found nothing. All my other programs run fine. Please note that there are 2 instances of it open in the task manager, im not sure if that is normal or not.

I like what IE7 is doing right, but I have one very frustrating problem with it. Every time I click on a program that is linked to a Website, or a site stored in My Favorites; IE7 opens two of that program or site. Very strange I know. With most of them it is just an annoyance to have to shut one down; HOWEVER my Word Search 7 - Bible Discussion Group, is such a HIGH memory useage program, that it totally Freezes up when two windows of that program open up. When I go to the Task Manager to End Task, sure enough there are two WS7 - Bible Discussion Group windows open, both saying "NOT RESPONDING". How do I stop this from happening?

Hello cmason,

We can't do anything without seeing a set of logs to find the malware that is causing this.

Use another computer to download the tools listed in our sticky topic New Instructions - Read This Before Posting for Malware Removal Help. Transfer the tools to the infected computer and run the scans.

You may have to save the scans to usb stick and use another computer to post them to us.

Greetings. When I open IE8 with Window it will continue to open "ad infinitum". I have swept w/resident virus and malware programs -- Trend Micro Internet Security, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and Uniblue Registry Booster -- but with no success. I have reset IE8 to its default settings, but still the problem persists.

Originally I used Trend Micro's Hijack This to try to sort through the problem, because it started out as a non-stop redirection of IE8 to "ask.com". I thought I recognized an issue on the Hijack This scan page w/R3, but I ended up deleting R3 altogether (I checked the R3 and mashed the "fix checked" button) Now it repeatedly revists the IE8 MSN.com page.

Anyway, I would sure like to find the solution because using the Windows Task Manager to delete the repeatedly popping up IE's is getting old and annoying.

Let me know what other info is needed to help diagnose the problem. Thanks!!
