Does windows 7 auto activate if windows 8 original?

Q: Does windows 7 auto activate if windows 8 original?

Hi guys,

i bought a tower that had windows 8 on it originally
i installed 7 pro to keep everything uniform...for the users mostly

i bought a win 7 pro license but when i went to activate it says windows is activated
with the ask for genuine microsoft software logo software on the right

there is no option to change the key...
i dont remember activating during install and assumed i would get the 3 days before the nag screen
i used a dell windows 7 pro 64 bit install disk...how is this possible?

any ideas?
i suppose i can change the key via other means...but is it necessary as i could use the license on another box...

what would you do?

Preferred Solution: Does windows 7 auto activate if windows 8 original?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There's your problem, you used a Dell disc. Dell, and some other OEM's, embed the keys into the installation disc. You shouldn't use a Dell disc except on the Dell computers its designed for. Change the key and do a proper activation to keep your client legal.

Windows 7 needs a Key Code to activate. You might have a sticker on the bottom ot the laptop or inside the battery bay with your original Key Code, and that can still be used, depending on the version of Windows 7 that you installed. Where did you get the Windows 7 that you have just installed?

I have a Windows 2012 R2 server running as my KMS host. This server has been in production for over 18 months. It services both Windows 7 Pro, Ent, Win8.1, Office 2010 Pro Plus and Office 2013 Pro. I set this KMS up via the VLS on 2012 and manage it via

Would like to get my HP laptop back running original windows 7 home premium ( I think that is it or that is my desktop Dell computer) either way both desktop and my laptop run windows 7. I tried to uninstall windows 10 thru my control panel programs and features didn't work So then I tried restoring to a previous date and time this did not work either. I read somewhere that you must uninstall windows 10 within a certain time period? which to me seems like garbage! Would anybody be able to instruct me on how get my windows 7 back on my HP laptop please without losing my pictures and all my documents?

Welcome to the forum. Do you have a recovery partition or rescue disk for 7 as it won't role back you will have to do a clean install or recover back to how it came. If you put files you want to keep in Google drive or ms one drive wait for it to sync and when you get 7 back they will appear

How do you safely remove Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) from a dual boot with Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit)
I'm quite happy with Windows 8.1 Pro alone

The scenario:
Both are on the same hard drive (a SATA).
Windows 7 was on the hard drive initially. I installed Windows 8.1 on a new partition (which i made from shrinking the Drive C:\)

But since Windows 7 was the original operating system, I had some concern about losing the Master Boot Record(bootloader configuration data) that Windows 7 had established on the drive.

To address this, I've researched quite a few forums about this matter and this is the best i found.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/210983-dual-boot-delete-os.html

So I'm a bit perplexed and hope that the good experts here could steer me in the right direction with a step-by-step.

Thanks for your insights and guidance. Here's a screenshot of my disk management btw

A:Dual boot: Remove original windows 7 OS and keep windows 8

The 200 MB partition is probably the 'Active' partition, meaning that is where the boot record is. If you confirm this then the Windows 7 partition can be deleted or re-purposed.

A:How do I activate windows on a Dell laptop which came with pre installed genuine windows 8.

It is possible  you have a pirated copy of Windows. Computers with a factory installed legal copy of Windows do not need to be activated. The activation code for Windows 8 is located in the system BIOS and is read automatically. You can check the code by using one of the utilities that will extract it from the BIOS. If there is a code, contact Microsoft and ask them if the code is valid.

So we have a PC in my shop right now that dell replaced the motherboard in sept 2013. Apparently at that point I see alot online about them not giving paper keys when they did the repairs. In this case the customer is fed up with the BS of Dell support as they want to charge him for a warranty to help. The PC lost all power, lights, etc and had the motherboard replaced but dell says all they did was replace the modem card. Machine has no modem as its a ultrabook. But anyways, heres the question. They keep telling him if he purchases a Dell Windows 8 recovery disk that the machine will activate again. Is this true or just them trying to milk him out of $60? I didnt know if they were similar to the windows 7 disks with "slic"? I dont remember the term right now. I thought they would pull the bios key the same as a OEM windows 8 disk would.

They have been using the computer all this time with it complaining that it wasnt genuine and just closing that out but the computer got murdered with a really bad virus now and the recovery cant verify the edition of windows or something to that nature.

Tried loading with the OEM generic key and using the key tool to pull the MSDM key off the board and once I did that it was when I realized the board was replaced and thats when the customer remembered this also.

I have a relatively new Dell Desktop about 1 year old. Whenever I insert a CD into the drive, nothing happens. I have to eject the disk, and insert it again. It usually starts up after the second try. (Sometimes third). I bought one of those cleaning disks that supposedly cleans out the laser but it was of little help. Could there be some dust or dirt in the mechanism that is causing this problem? And if that is a good guess, how difficult would it be for me to clean it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello, yesterday I, or someone else in my household got the PC infected with some type of virus. I've alleviated some of the problems with Spybot, Avast Antivirus, f-vmonde, etc. but I still haven't found the cause of the Auto Update error. I try to turn them on from the desktop icon and it won't let me, I go to the control panel and try there, and it still doesn't activate when I hit apply. I also keep getting tons of pop ups over the course of the day that mostly come up as "about:blank", which I'm assuming are being blocked through a popup blocker or something.

Anyways, any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi there,

I have a Gateway DX-4822 that I bought in 2010. I am planning to build a custom pc and will probably be switching from Intel to AMD.

I have read that OEM License keys are linked to motherboards and can't be used on a new rig, but some people have mentioned that it's possible to call Microsoft during installation and lie about the situation to get Windows activated on new computer.

These threads are 1-2 years old, so I was just wondering if this is still a possibility? Will save me over $100.

Further, I know this is not the thread for this but I am planning to get AMD FX-6300 along with ASRock 970M PRO3 motherboard. Do you think I can use my old computer case?

Hi, I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit from Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit when Windows 10 launched, then a few months later, around New Year I decided to do a clean install. I made an installation disc with the program from Microsoft's website and did the procedure, skipping when asked about a product key.

After that, however, I started getting messages that "Activation failed because this device doesn't have a valid digital entitlement or product key. Error: 0x803F7001". That is even though I still have the emails from when I upgraded to 10 and my old install is still listed on my Microsoft account. When I asked Microsoft on the phone about this they told me I needed either the key I used for Windows 7 with which I upgraded or a new Windows 10 key. My old key is long lost and I feel I shouldn't have to pay for a new key when it is pretty clear it's the same machine and since it's also stated I don't need a key after a clean install after an upgrade.

Is there any way to prove that my laptop is the same one that upgraded from windows 7 so that I can get my OS activated? Any and all help is much appreciated!

I bought an HP Omni 27 system several years ago. It came with Windows 7 installed, but was able to install Windows 8 Pro free as soon as it was released. I opted to get the CD for the OS with the system. So, I did upgrade to Windows 8. After the upgrade, one of the Windows 8 Updates took it to Windows 8.1.

I recently tried to refresh the OS and was told to insert the system disk. So I did, and got a message that the disk was invalid. Is there any way for me to get this OS to refresh without losing any programs or files? I'm kind of stumped as to how do do this, or if it's even possible.

Thanks,

Hello!
Microsoft said that with 1511 build we can now enter a Windows 7/8/8.1 licence key to activate windows 10 until july... but not so much more information whatsoever.
I have a Windows 7 starter spare product key. I guess it's 32-bit (since I never heard of 64-bit version).
I would like to know if with that key I could activate a clean copy of windows 10 home 64-bit ? I can't find any source to confirm that matter, and I don't really want to test & try.

Thank you for you help!

A:Can I use a Windows 7 starter key to activate windows 10 home 64-bit?

You have to upgrade a copy of win 7/8/8.1 already on a PC with windows 10 before you can do a clean install on the same machine.

So you'd need to install windows 7 using that key first.

The upgrade process is what creates the windows 10 hash key that the installation servers recognise when you do a clean install.

The upgrade copy of Windows 10 matches what's already on the PC already , so I think you'd only be able to install the 32 bit version initially.

I can't see an issue with then doing a clean install of 64bit win 10 afterwards when the PC has been upgraded to windows 10 from 7 though.

I'm new to the forum, haven't really posted since I joined in 2012 so not sure where to post this, but this seemed to be the most logical place to post it.

Recently a friends laptop, which was given to me to fix, had 46 viruses which corrupted Windows and the recovery partition on a HP Compaq Presario CQ61 laptop. I proceeded to re-install windows with what I assumed to be the correct recovery discs for the laptop, it turned out they weren't. I was on Microsoft support for an hour and they that the product key which I have (recovered using a product key recovering software) was an OEM-SLP license, which I didn't know at the time of using the product key recovery software, and that HP support was the only option.

After spending a further hour on HP support they also proceeded to tell me that they would not help because the laptop is out of warranty and I would either have to pay for a technician to come out, roughly ?150 pounds, or buy new recovery discs, ?40, neither option my friend can afford.

Unfortunately she gave me the discs for her old HP laptop and no longer has the recovery discs for her newer laptop. The product key, the COA one on the bottom of the laptop, is rubbed off and you cannot make out what any of it says. Is there any other option to try to activate Windows or do I have to buy a new product key or recovery discs?. Was reading on another forum post that I might be able to do telephone activation, wait for a real person to answer, give them the OEM-... Read more

A:Windows 7 product un-readable, can't activate Windows

Yes, it's definitely possible - here's my standard spiel on the subject...

Quote:
There *may* be an alternative solution though, if you are patient and persistent.
Attempt Telephone Activation, and speak to an operator - they will tell you that your current Key is blocked (they should then ask for confirmation of your Product Key). Explain to them your problem, that you need to change the Key to the one on your sticker, but that the sticker is unreadable (could they please supply a replacement Key?). Hopefully they will ask for documentary proof of the sticker, in the form of an email with a picture of the affected sticker - and you can proceed from there.
Sometimes it takes two or three calls before you get an operator who actually knows and uses this procedure - but I know that it can and does happen.

telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

Windows 7 Professional
AMD Phenom II X 4-820 Processor 2.80 GHz
64 bit OS

I purchased a Dell in December 2009. When I purchased it, Windows 7 had been out for less than a year or so. Many PC company's (Dell included) still had inventories of PCs with Windows XP so as an added promotional feature companies would sell you their inventory of Window XP OSs and also give you the Window 7 installation disk as well in case you wanted to install the newer version at a later date.

Anyway, for the last 6 months or so my Windows XP Pro Dell was having many issues and Dell tech support said most where due to the OS and suggested re-installing Windows XP Pro or Installing Windows 7 Pro. Since Windows XP is no longer supported it made sense to install Windows 7 Pro. I did this and all is working fine. Note: When I installed the new Windows 7 Pro OS, it asked me for the activation key and I put in the activation key just as it was printed on the Windows 7 Pro installation disk.

Today, I right clicked on "Computer" and selected "Properties" just to remind me if I had a 64 bit or 32-bit OS. Turns out I have a 64-bit OS. I also noticed this: "The Windows 7 Professional product key you typed is invalid for activation", and that I had 12 days left to activate my Windows 7 Pro OS. I suppose this is because I installed the Windows 7 Pro instead of re-installing Window XP Pro???

Anyway, how do I go about activating... Read more

I have a computer that originally had windows 8.1 pro, but we had the manufacturer (HP) downgrade it to windows 7 pro using the windows 8 downgrade rights before it was shipped out. Late last month It was infected with a crypto virus that encrypted everything on the computer, and deactivated all windows software. After using magic jellybean to recover all the key codes on the hard drive and another utility that pulled the windows 8.1 key off the BIOS, we wiped the hard drive and did a fresh install of windows 7 pro. After getting the computer back up and running I went in to reactivate windows but unfortunately the magic jellybean keys did not work nor did it give the option to activate over the phone.
I typed slui 4 into command prompt, but it only took me to the normal activation screen again with no option to activate over the phone. After attempting several keys I found online, I finally was able to the activate windows over the phone screen but only if I attempt to activate windows using that code.
When I talked to “tom from Texas” He had no idea what I was talking about when I said windows 8 pro downgrade rights.
I need to get this computer activated

Hi,

A couple of months ago I decided to finally upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I didn't do a clean install, I just went through the upgrade process.

Everything went smoothly, and I've been loving everything about windows 10 since then, but today it started to warn me that my license is about to expire. I was under the impression the license from my Windows 7 would be transferred over.

This is what my update and security screen looks like...

When I click activate it just does this...

And nothing happens. When I go to change the product key, and I put in my windows 10 license code they gave me.
I get a different error if i put in my windows 7 license code.

I don't know what to do. I'm frustrated by this. I was under the impression that this was a free upgrade, and now I feel like I'm going to have to buy a new license.

any help or advice is MUCH appreciated.

A:Upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7, but Will not Activate!

Okay, just a small update. I found this thread, where someone was having the same issue.

In Andre Da Costa's final response, he provided another product key to try. (YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7) I tried it, and it worked! I couldn't believe it and I don't understand it. Is this a legit key, or is this some kind of piracy that might cause me trouble?

Since it came from the official microsoft forum, I am hopeful that this was a legit solution and that I have a valid license. I am not trying to pirate the software, I was a legit owner of windows 7 and I was promised a free upgrade, but Microsoft refused to honor that license after pushing me into the upgrade!

I appreciate any info you may have.

Thanks!

I am a student and I recently purchased Windows 7 Professional through the $30 student program. However, I have been running the beta and have heard that there are some issues regarding upgrading from Beta which is the Ultimate edition to a lesser edition (ie Pro). I have access to a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate... but I don't have a genuine key for it, however I do have a genuine windows 7 Pro key. Will the windows 7 Professional key activate windows 7 Ultimate?

Thanks!

A:Will a Windows 7 Pro key Activate Windows 7 Ultimate?

No... you will need an Ultimate key for the Ultimate disc... If you have a full version of Windows 7 Professional, you can do a clean install, but you will need to reinstall your apps... Be sure you backup your data if you decide to do this..

Hello everyone,
While playing around with partitions and UEFI, I messed up the recovery partition as well :/ All that is left of the HDD is this

The "Windows RE Tools" partition got saved somehow. Can I reinstall windows 8 from an iso and use the data inside Windows RE Tools to register and do stuff the same way it used to be? I just need to have my windows 8 installation (activated) back. Is this possible as explained here:

I am sorry in advance if I left out an important piece of information.
Thanks guys

Factory OEM install? If yes, your product code is embedded in the BIOS. If you download the matching Windows 8.1 install media for your version of 8.0, it will use the embedded key automatically and activate online with no issues. Whats First Big Update (Which Arrives Today)
I have read the above article. My understanding is that a user can clean-install and activate Windows 10 on a computer running Windows 7/8/8.1 that has never been upgraded to Windows 10 as long as the user has a valid Windows 7/8/8.1 product key.

However, someone (Mr. Zhai Jian) on a Chinese forum thinks that such a computer firstly has to be upgraded, getting a digital entitlement, and only after that can a clean installation be performed. He does not believe an OEM Windows 7/8/8.1 product key can be used to activate Windows 10.

Who is correct, Mr. Zhai Jian or I?

Hi thereI am using an HP 14 series laptop. For various reasons I was using Win 10 fine after upgrading from an HP OEM version of 8.1 but it crashed and I could not use the recovery partition.  So I reinstalled Windows 8.1 on discs HP sent me awhile back (my PC did not come with any discs). HP sent me these discs because I was having problems with my wifi and a downgrade did not solve this. As it happens the wifi problem was a hardware failure that is now fixed. But I just had to reinstall from the three system recovery discs that HP sent because of a hard drive issue. These completely reformatted the hard drive. Now I am told that my activation key is wrong and Windows cannot be activated. I contacted Microsoft tech support but after checking my PC remotely they could not fix it and told me it's an HP problem not a Microsoft problem. Can anyone help? I have done nothing illegal, everything is legit. But I am out of warranty period for my HP.

A:HP/OEM Windows 8.1 discs will not activate Windows

Hi: I wouldn't know why the HP recovery disks aren't working.  There should have been no need to activate the installation. However, if W10 was working fine on your PC and it had been successfully activated previously, you can reinstall W10 without going through the upgrade process again. Make the W10 installation DVD or usb flash drive from the link below... http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 When you go to install W10, it will ask you to enter a product key (which you don't have) and there will be an 'I don't have a product key' selection. You choose the 'I don't have a product key' option, W10 will install and once you are reconnected to the internet, it will automatically activate since Microsoft has a record that your PC was previously legally upgraded to W10.

Hello everyone. So after remembering that I've read this would be possible at some point, I did some research and found that it's indeed possible to activate Win 10 w/ key from 8.1 after latest big update. I wanted to re-format the SSD and start from scratch. I bought PC w/ Windows 8.1 pre-installed and eventually upgraded to Windows 10. I had it up-to-date and I was logging in with email.

However, now when I've installed Windows 10 and updated it w/ 1511, I still can't activate my copy of Windows. This is the error I get: http://i.imgur.com/PmzIwDj.png

Does anyone have any idea how to activate Windows 10? Should I call someone at Microsoft? It's a business PC, so I can't have Windows that aren't activated or with illegal key, so I need to have this resolved within a few days tops. Any help would be very much appreciated!

A:Unable to activate Windows 10 w/ Windows 8.1 key

I am surprised W10 did not activate automatically. From your first upgrade on this laptop you will have created a digital entitlement recorded on the MS servers for your laptop. Any new installations of W10 on this laptop will pick up that entitlement automatically and activate. You should not need to enter a product key.

The only reason this might fail is if you picked the wrong edition of W10 when you downloaded the ISO file for your latest installation. It could be the language did not match, English versus English International or something like that. The W10 edition needs to match the W8.1 edition you had originally.

Is this possible? I think I already asked a question like this in another thread but I couldn't get a straight answer. I know you can activate a clean install of win 8.1 with a win 8 product key but you see, I don't have one - I only have the WMC upgrade key that got installed over it when the previous owner of my PC added the Windows Media Center feature (which I read was free once upon a time). You see I have a retail win8.1_RTM_x86.iso disk image and I want to be able to do a clean install.
