Preferred Solution: change user variable permanently for TEMP and TMP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: change user variable permanently for TEMP and TMP

...which is OK because there is nothing to expand in "c:\temp", right?
If you wish to continue using %USERNAME% in those environment vars, you could use something like
set unvar = USERNAME
setx TEMP "c:\Users\%%unvar%%\temp"

which will give you REG_EXPAND_SZ along with "%USERNAME% in it.

Every time I shut down my laptop, I boot up a brand new laptop!! ...Or at least my laptop thinks so... Every time I start Windows, it comes up with the "Looks like you're a brand new Windows XP user! Lets go and take a tour of this wondrous operating system, and visit our nice gift shop!" or something like that...
The same thing also happens with Firefox (Losing all your bookmarks is a pain), Windows Media Player, and pretty much every program I run. Some have even forgotten they're even installed... How do I get myself back to my normal user?
Error message below.

Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

When I try to download a file in Internet Explorer 9 I always get this message -
Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable.

If I click on OK the message goes, then comes back again.
If I click OK on this second message the file then starts to download and then opens.

I can download files from Chrome and Firefox without any problem. There is no problem downloading files to Outlook

There used to be an option to repair explorer but I cannot find one now.
I thought about uninstalling explorer and reinstalling it, but how would I do that - and more importantly, would it make any difference?

I have these browsers installed so that I can check how my website appears in the different browsers, so although I do not use explorer very often I still want it to work!

A:Temp Variable Error Message

Can't even find the file in a google search. That, and the fact it has random characters suggests malware, or remnants thereof. It's possible it renames itself at every boot to avoid detection, or that it has been cleaned - however the cleanup wouldn't be complete, because some program (the one that's giving you the popup) is still trying to load the dll. A full antivirus (if you can't afford to buy one, get clamwin) and antispyware (windows defender, spybot search and destroy, ad-aware) scan (with the latest definitions) would be in order. I'm not very knowledgeable with malware removal, but you can browse some of the other threads for recommendations.
When you're done with your scan, you may want to check in your startup programs (look in start, all programs, windows defender, then look in tools, software explorer, startup programs for any weird programs. You can also check in control panel (classic view), administrative tools, system configuration, startup tab.

Does anyone know why Microsoft decided to put the users temp folder under the users profile. Is it for security reasons, so if someone else logs on the the machine, they can't view the other users temp files. If this is the recommended practice, does anyone know of any documentation stating this? We have always set this variable to "C:\temp" in the past, so an admin on the machine could go to one place and delete ALL temp files on the whole machine at once. If leaving it in the users profile is recommended and you have machines with many different users, how do you clean up all the users temp files without having to traverse into each profile then delete all files? Is there a script or batch file to do this?

A:Can not Creat work file,check temp environment variable

IE7 runs in "low integrity" mode on Vista (aka "Protected mode") - this means that, by default, it has even less access to your system for security reasons. If Word is started from IE7 when accessing a URL still in "Protected mode" (i.e. not in "Trusted sites") then it will also be launched in "low integrity" mode.

However, the "Content.Word" folder in "Temporary Internet Files" is probably marked as "medium" integrity, because it was probably created when IE7/Word was executed previously when in Protected mode. This means that the folder cannot be accessed by Word now, as Word is "low integrity" and the folder has A higher integrity!

You may need to lower the integrity of that folder using a tool such as Mark Minasi's chml.exe: http://www.minasi.com/apps/[/URL] to get it to work with URLs in Protected mode. Or add the site of the document to your Trusted security zone.

Hi All

I posted an issue before here;

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/921596-local-settings-temp-folder-transform.html

Looking further into the issue I have decided to open up a new post to reflect my latest findings;

The issue we have is on our base image for our Lenovo models.

The issue affects the way some installers (EXE) use the TEMP or TMP user environmental variable (EV). They seem to be stumbling on the fact the variable has a space in it for the "Local Settings" part. When I tried a different location I used a variable that by co-incidence did not contain any spaces and it worked.

I have tried many different ways of altering the EV for TEMP and TMP, such as using quotes etc, but nothing will work. It usually results with the installer exclaming an "Internal Error" if I use quote marks. Changing the temp folder to something outside of "Local Settings" to get rid of the 'space' will work but this shouldn't have to be done. It works fine on our default local administrator user account, but not on any other domain or local account so there must be a global setting that isn't being carried over or is missing. The variables are set up the same way on our HP image, and I believe the default XP way.

I will keep investigating. If anyone has any further thoughts or ideas then please share.

Many thanks.

There is some sort of problem with the Windows temp folder (perhaps deleted by mistake?). To check (and fix if needed) right click on "my computer" and select "properties". In the box that opens click on the "advanced" tab. Now click the button near the bottom marked "environment variables". The path to the Windows temp folder will be shown at the top part of the box. Check to see if the path actually exists or edit it to a folder of your own choosing. Check both "TEMP" and "TMP" and, if you alter them, make them use the same folder. Okay your way out and reboot. Now try the programs you are having difficulty with.

Hi Guys and Girls,

I wonder if someone might be able to help me. We use a product called wildfire 5 with user variables set as follows

WT_PTC_ROOT = C:\PTC\Local_Data\%USERNAME%

WT_PTC_HOME = C:\PTC\Local_Data\%USERNAME%

This seems to work on first look at the set command in dos. The logged on username is shown against the above variable but as soon you restart the machine the above user variables reverts back to the above.

So it is shown in the set comand as

WT_PTC_ROOT = C:\PTC\Local_Data\%USERNAME%

WT_PTC_HOME = C:\PTC\Local_Data\%USERNAME%

Rather than

WT_PTC_ROOT = C:\PTC\Local_Data\wayneg

WT_PTC_HOME = C:\PTC\Local_Data\wayneg

I have tried putting a system variable in as follows

username = %username%

But no luck.

Does anybody have any ideas or work arounds? This works fine in XP without a problem.

Any help would be great.

Cheers, Wayne

I would take a loot at this:

Otherwise, I think with Vista and W7 you have to set registry keys for your product's environment variables.

Hi,

This might be a repetitive question but I couldn't find the right solution on my problem.

What I need is to change the TEMP and TMP variable value to a specific location for both existing and incoming domain users.

As of now if I change this value it will only reflect on a specific user, and not for users, especially for an incoming user. It will still be defaulted to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp.

Thanks in advance.

hi,
you can modify the windows registry for this as well.

click start type regedit the navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\[Adapter ID]]

(Find the correct adapter you want to change on your machine, there may be multiple entries depending on the number of adopters you may have)

the right click and create a new REG_DWORD, name it MTU, set the value after that.

hope this helps

Hi! I'm using a Neo netbook, running Windows Ultimate 32-bit. I found out that my user profile got corrupted after a forced shut down (the battery doesn't work and the power went out causing it to shut down). The Welcome screen goes on for minutes, then "Preparing Your Desktop" appears and when it finally starts, Windows says that I've logged on with a temporary profile and that files will be deleted when I log off. Of course I've searched about this on the web and tried the REGEDIT method wherein I renamed the .bak file or something. I also tried making a new user profile, but the problem is, the new user that I created also seemed to be temporary, like, when I save a file, it will disappear after a reboot. Does anyone know any other method to fix this? Thank you in advance!

When I am typing, sometimes I get the character ? instead of ?. After doing some research, all you need to do is select the English(US) instead of English(Can) in the language bar. Apparently, it seems that this language setting only effects the individual software instead of all the software installed on your computer. So for example, if I changed this language setting in Word, this setting will not roll over to Notepad or Chrome or even the OS.

I am wondering if there is a way to permanently save the English(US) setting so it will apply to all of my software?

A:Change Language Permanently

If you go to Regional and Language Settings in the Control Panel, you should be able to set it to English (United States) so that all software defaults to this. Additionally, you can go to the "Keyboards and Languages" tab and click on "Change Keyboards" to ensure that English (US) is installed. If not, you can add it.

On my Dell XP Pro, msconfig lists a number of applications (not services) from 3rd party vendors, such as HP and QWest, scheduled to launch at start-up. Several times, I've unchecked these items, clicked APPLY, and then re-started my system; nevertheless, when my system has finally rebooted, Windows Task Manager shows them running, and I have to eliminate them in Windows Task manager.

So it appears that somehow, there is some application somewhere that is reversing (i.e. ignoring) my (new) settings I try to establish in msconfig. Is anyone familiar with this problem?

I can figure out several ways of dealing with this problem, such as changing the names of these annoying applications (e.g. from application.exe to application.eze) so they cannot be found (therefore cannot launch), but I'd sure like to know what software it is on my machine that keeps overriding my choices. And also how to change the start-up menu permanently without changing the names of the relevant offending programs.

A:Cannot permanently change msconfig settings

msconfig is a diagnostic utility. If you want to permanently manage startup items you should use a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml).
Uncheck whatever you don't want started in that app and let's go from there.

Create a rtf document with a "space", select the space, choose your font and size, save as your-template.rtf.
In properties, tick read only to avoid modifying it, be sur that rtf files open with Wpad.

There are a whole bunch of XP services that launch automatically when you start up Windoze. These can be turned off manually by using services.msc.

But I've found that at least some of these can not be turned off permanently. An example is Automatic Updates.

Using Automatic Updates as in your example, if you right click the Service, Properties and set the Startup Type to Disabled and reboot, does that not keep it from starting again?If you disable Automatic Updates, you will then get an informational message about that, which you will also have to disable (if you want).If you have particular fussy ones, tell us which and maybe we can help. I have setup exchange for my comcast email and use it in outlook but exchange keeps changing my default email server to itself. Is there a way I can make my comcast email the default permanently?
Thanks,
Jerry

How can I permanently change a single file's icon?

I have organized some backups as ISO files, and would like to have a different icon for each file.

I have created an .ICO for each file.

IconChanger worked great, but only while the program was installed. Once I had all the icons changed and thought I was through and uninstalled the program, all the icons went back to their original disc icon.

Is there a way to permanently change a single file's icon, so if I move it to another machine it will retain the icon?

Technically, yes, a "resource editor" can be used to alter icons embedded in executables. However, once you start haxx0ring an app, most software vendors would see that as a violation of their terms of use, which is why I won't provide further technical detail (I realise you're asking for entirely innocent reasons).

I can't imagine it would be worth your time though. It's just an icon, after all.

OK I can open cmd and type color 0a and that's what I like...

So is there anyway to keep this color default so I don't have to type it in every time...

I don't know if I can help, since I don't have Windows7,but have you tried to right click on the title bar at the top of the box and select properties.That is how you do it in Windows XP.
Hope that's what you mean.

hi, randomly the other week my computer became extremely slow and would often hang, so i did some investigating and one way or another i discovered that setting the priority of a certain instance of svchost.exe (the one that hosts the service "Network Connections" among others) to Above Normal seems to do the trick.

i have no idea why this works but it seems to, and so i wanted to know if there is a way to permanently set the priority of this process to above normal without having to manually adjust it every time i start my computer.

i should mention i tried downloading the program "Prio" which claims the ability to save settings on priorities but unfortunately it doesnt work with svchost.exe

does anyone know how to permanently change the priority of this process?

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

A:Recycle Bin only deletes permanently and cannot change settings

SOLVED:

Check for a key called "NoRecycleFiles" in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If present, try setting the value to 0. Alternatively, delete it.

I am trying to have my computer boot Linux by default, from an external hard drive, while my internal drive has Windows 10 on it. Unfortunately I cannot get it to work: Windows 10 boots automatically at every restart and cold start.

Steps I've taken so far:
The boot order I want is set and saved in BIOS. There's no uEFI on my computer.
Windows 10 fast startup option is disabled. I also disabled the hibernation option just in case.

Still, I can only get Linux to boot by going into BIOS every time and selecting the (already selected) external hard drive again. When I then try to mount the internal (Win 10) disk from within Linux, I get an error saying it cannot be mounted because Windows 10 is still using it.

Any ideas how to solve this and give full boot control back to BIOS?

A:How to change boot options permanently (Win 10 not being default)?

Hey Kinimod,

Have a look HERE. (However I just noted you want to boot from an external drive, so I'm not sure if this is applicable)

hi,
i want to change especially the brightness settings of a webcam.
Does anyone know a way that lets me adjust the settings globally and permanently?(so that those settings apply to all programs that will use the cam without having to re-adjust)
The cam itself is a quite old no-name model. The basic driver which makes it available to applications on the systems miracously still worked though.

A:globally / permanently change webcam settings

If the cam is that old, its entirely possible that option was never available...

I had problems with vista, so i created a new partition, installed a different version of vista, then formatted the original OS partition. (obviously i had no idea what i was doing, but thats beyond the point)
Now i have a problem with the new partition i created for vista.
The default drive on where to save things is C:
however, C: is my OS drive
how can i change it so that all files are downloaded to D: without manually entering it everytime?

Or, would simply changing the Drive letters work?
if so, how do it do it? Ive tried using the vista maintenance tools, but i get an error saying it cannot be changed because of files in use.

Or, should i get a new harddrive, remove the old drive, install a partition on it named c:, install vista on that. (i would assume the original vista disc i have has the ability to create a partition on it when booting from disc.. its preactivated)

Im not really looking for the easiest or cheapest way to do it. I have just googled the crap out of this, and im not really finding the info im looking for, because im not really sure what its called.
So any suggestions would be very helpful

Is there any known reason a user of workbook would get the error code 91, but someone else does not?
I cannot really debug the code since I am not getting the error and it's not practical for me to be at the users' machine, nor for me tell them which step to take to help me debug it.

In a Contact, Notes field, when I select all and change the font, it usually reverts back to the small default font the next time I open outlook. How do I prevent this, and, how can I set a new default font for Contact notes for all new contacts? (I am not talking about Notes, I am talking about within a contact, the notes field.) Thank You

Error : Run Time Error 91 - Object variable or With block variable not set

I have a userform with some textboxes and Command Buttons. When I add
the record, I receive an error message. The Code I wrote on Command Button to save the data into worksheet is as follow:

Private Sub cmdAddScore_Click()

Set ws = Worksheets("Matches")
Set ws1 = Worksheets("Schedule")
Set LastRow = ws.Range("A65536").End(xlUp)
Set LastRow1 = ws1.Range("H65536").End(xlUp)

RESPONSE = MsgBox("Do you want to save this record?", vbYesNoCancel)

If RESPONSE = vbYes Then

LastRow.Offset(1, 0).Value = txtMatchNumber.Text 'Column A
LastRow.Offset(1, 1).Value = Format(txtMatchDate.Text, "dd.mmm.yy") 'Column B

We have several user profiles that we would like to delete when setting up Windows 7 images so that old users do not have their folders stored on the new images. However, after manually deleting the folders under C:\Users and then
locating their keys in the registry and deleting those, the users' folders return immediately after any of our computers that we try this on gets rebooted.

Is there another step that we're missing? I've been searching around online and have been unable to locate any solutions. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Unable to permanently delete domain user profile folders

Hi0
I think the right way to delete a profile would be Right click on My computer -> Properties -> Advanced System settings -> Advanced -> user profiles -> settings. Here you can select the required profile and then delete it.Janaki Hariharan
