I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I use mouse usually so didn't realize this problem until I take the laptop out for work today. I have uninstalled and installed the latest touchpad driver, but it did not work. I cannot even see the touchpad device in the "device manager" or a touchpad option in "setting" Below are two screenshots. Any idea what's going on and how I should solve this problem? Many thanks!!!!

Until recently the touchpad used to work with the HP / Synaptic driver. 2 or 3 finger function worked and turn on / off with the orange light worked.  For whatever reason these functions don't work anymore and I don't find a driver on the HP Support site to download and install.

Hello Tristan,

Welcome to the forums.

Been a while since I had a laptop, but I seem to remember there being a setting on what to do with the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in. Unfortunately I don't remember where and have no way of finding it.

Have you tried rebooting with the mouse unplugged?

Sorry I can't be of more help. The manual for the laptop ought to have that info in it somewhere.

I have purchase multiple xps 13 and inspiron 13 laptops and observe the same issues.  I tend to use the touch pad with my right hand's index finger, and click the touchpad button with my left hand's index finger.  It's a quick way to get things done.  Many in my organization do this, too and have been running into problems.
However, quite frequently (but not all the time) when I click the button with my left hand the cursor jumps to another location on the screen.  Frequently this is the lower-left corner of the screen, but sometimes it is the upper right, too. This causes different windows to come into focus, or it activates the start menu.  Really , really annoying, and it happens on both laptop models.  Our previous Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and Acer laptops did not have this issue.
I think this has to do with the touch pad thinking that the user has two fingers on the touch pad and moves the cursor thinking the finger jumped around the pad.  Otherwise the gestures and movement of the touchpad is fine.
Is this a known issue to Dell?  It's really aggravating and other users in my organization are complaining as well.  I may need to return the lot (3 XPS 13, 5 Inspiron 13 machines ) and look at different hardware.

Hello,

I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop that has issues. Sometimes the touchpad works, and sometimes it doesn't. I've noticed when it doesn't work, the icon in the tray has disappeared or never booted up to begin with. Sometimes it boots up and sometimes it just doesn't even boot up to the tray at all. And at other times, it does.
(Along with this, maybe it's just a coincidence, but I've been working on this for days and days but when the touchpad doesn't work, the keyboard acts up too!) This might have nothing to do with it at all.

I've done a complete reformat of the hard drive, installed Win XP Professional, reinstalled drivers over and over. Been to the Dell website and have all the newest drivers.
When I reinstall the touchpad drivers, it does work once again, but this seems to be short lived.
The laptop is 4 years old...seems strong otherwise, can handle multiple tasks fairly well, has a dual core installed.
I can't figure it out.
Can anyone help?

Thank you!!
Pam

Haven't updated your laptop's trackpad driver lately? Then you may well want to consider doing so, at least if your laptop is equipped with a Synaptics trackpad. As a user on the Hardware Zone forums discovered, the latest Synaptics driver seems to enable multitouch gestures on older laptops that didn't previously support them, including two-finger scrolling, and three-finger click. What's more, while the drivers themselves come from HP, they should work just fine on other laptops with a Synaptics trackpad. Hit up the link below to try it out for yourself.

We just got a Dell XPS-15z, and, we have questions about scrolling on the Cypress touchpad using the Cypress drivers.

When scrolling down (either one finger or 2 fingers), when you hit the bottom of the touchpad, is there any way for the scrolling to continue without your having to lift your finger(s) back to the top of the touchpad? On other Dell laptops, I have Chiral motion, or the scrolling continues so long as your finger is at the bottom of the touchpad? I tried enabling the "Continued Motion" option just in case that was what did it, but that did not seem to work.

Which brings up another question re what "Continued Motion" does.

Also, is there any manual/help document for this driver either on the internet, or in the software itself?

I looked on the forum and on the internet, and couldn't find any answers.

TIA.

Hello, I tried to upgrade to windows 8 and found that the touchpad became super sensitive and jumpy. Reading online I found a firmware that claimed to fix the issue and found it on HPs Support site. Mid install, it reported that it failed and forced a reboot on the laptop. When it was back up and running I found that the touchpad no longer worked. Its exactly the same issue as in these links: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/Touchpad-Not-Working-After-Faile... http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Touchpad-Firmware-Failed/td-p/23... I've tried to reflash and to get new drivers but they are not able to go through. The drivers install but don't fix anything. The flashing will quit saying I need drivers first even though I have them.  I've even reformated and put the factory windows 7 image back on but it still will not work. The solutions posted in the above links didnt work for me.  Does anyone have any idea on how I can fix this?

Hello,

#1 For some reason my touchpad on my HP 15 (2015 model with 8.1, now upgraded to Windows 10 1511) freezes. I hate that when it happens, you cant use it for 20 or 30 seconds or so. I close my lid and open it back up and it works normal, but then after a little bit it starts doing it again. My driver is up to date, I think it maybe Synaptics? If I need to give more info, please say!

#2: When I scroll on my touchpad up words it opens the start menu every so often when I am scrolling a lot, but when I didn't even open or even get near it or press Windows key. What is causing this? I hate it when it does this and screws up my readings then it stops scrolling and focuses more on the start menu then I have to click out of the menu and go back to what ever I was doing.

Thanks!

Hello Everyone,

My problem started after updating windows 8.1 to windows 10, of course!
First the touchpad just stopped working, for no reason.

My solution was to uninstall the drive and restart the laptop. And from time to time I had to do this proceed. Two weeks ago windows updated, and the touchpad issue's gone. . Unfortunately, another one appeared.

The feature "mousekey", which is turn it on at ease access to use the numeric keys to use them as a mouse, It's turning itself on. And doesn't matter how many times I turn it off, few seconds and it's on again.

I've tried uninstalling the drive, which after windows the last updating was "ELAN".

Then I replaced by the Toshiba drivers, which is "Synaptic", and uninstalled the drives ,the problem is the same. Because of that, I can't use my numeric key, which is annoying!! If anyone can come up with something I will be grateful.

So if you thought your new shiny Yoga had a bad touchpad, it may not be the touchpad at all! My Yoga 720 15.6 was acting really strange where every so often using the touchpad wouldnt work, and trying to use the keyboard wouldnt work at all. I first thought it was a touchpad issue but realized that this is a system wide issue. Something is causing Windows to start hitching. I turned off Adaptive Brightness in Power settings and the problem has gone away! I had a hunch it was this when I noticed the adaptive brightness was doing its job of gradually changing the brightness but looked like it was lagging while it was dimming/brightening itself. Lenovo Support: Please address this problem through any channels necessary because I want Adaptive Brightness but right now I have to have it disabled in order to use Windows without any hitches.

Dell 2-in-1 3147:
The "DELL Pointing Devices" dialog shows a "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" checkbox. If this checkbox is clear, the touchpad works properly. When this checkbox is marked, the touchpad does not work at all.
I have tried both USB and Bluetooth mice, and neither one allows the proper action: the touchpad should be enabled without a mouse, and the touchpad should be disabled with a mouse.  That's how it works on other systems.  It just doesn't work at all on this system.
I suspect there is some interaction between the touchpad and the touchscreen that is interfering with this setting.  But I have another laptop with a touchpad and a touchscreen, and the mouse detection works there (it's not a DELL).
Yes, I have toyed with the idea of deleting the DELL touchpad control application and installing a "stock" Synaptics touchpad driver.  But I don't want the DELL  "update" app to overwrite it with the DELL touchpad control app every time it sees "the wrong driver" loaded.  And I don't want to take the chance that the touchpad driver and the touchscreen driver are somehow linked together, thus disabling one when I disable the other.
Any ideas on how to get the "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" action working would be welcome.

so i have a problem with my touchpad. and i know you guys will probably say "check to see if it's disabled", but in this case it's different. when i boot up my laptop, right after the hp logo screen (and before windows even loads up), it says "F1 to continue or F10 for BIOS setup". and everytime, this screen pops up, the touchpad won't work. and if i press F10, the touch pad won't work in BIOS. basically, the touchpad idn't detected by the BIOS. in windows, there is no way to disable an enable the touchpad. there is no enable/disable option in device manager for the touchpad. there hasn't been any spills or breadcrums or...i think it is a hardware failure, but i am not sure. i think it is more of a "power not getting to the touchpad" failure. and btw, is there anyway to forcibly launch the synaptics touchpad program in windows? and this might seem strange, but the touchpad stopped working after i did this:1. This Notebook was bought for me a few years ago and I stopped using it a while ago. I decided to clean it up and upgrade it a bit so I can use it for Work however it wouldn't let me reset to factory settings or do a reset because it lacked recovery files or something. So instead I installed Windows 7 on an SSD and tried to use that. Everything else works fine and I've installed all of the drivers again however the touchpad still doesn't work. It doesn't show up in Device Manager and whenever I go to mouse properties it says it can't connect to Synaptic Driver and that I should uninstall it and reinstall it after a restart. I've installed and uninstalled it numerous times and it still doesn't work. I've done hours of research to see if anybody has the same problem as I do and it doesn't seem quite as severe for anybody else since mine doesn't respond at all. I reconnected all of the wires inside properly so I'm fairly certain it isn't a hardware issue especially since everything else works just fine. TL;DR - Installed Windows 7 on the Notebook because I couldn't factory reset             - Touchpad doesn't work after installing many drivers many times.              - Likely not a hardware issue             - Doesn't show up in Device Manager              - Can't find the same issue online

Good day and welcome to the community.

Which specific S41 model do you have? I see three on the support site: S41-75, S41-70 and S41-35.

Looking at each support page, I see the touchpad driver package, which is apparently a composite installer supporting three different touchpad models: Synaptics, Elan and Alps.

Hi, Try the following - connect a usb Mouse where required. Hold down the Windows key and press R Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In the Device Manager window, expand Mice and other pointing devices. Right click the Synaptics device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall. When complete, shutdown the notebook. Disconnect any peripheral, including any usb Mouse. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Let windows fully load for a few minutes before checking the touchpad function. Regards, DP-K

A:Touchpad not working

If it's fully functional in Safe Mode then the hardware is good. Try a System Restore to a time prior to when the problem 1st started. There could be an issue with the device driver, although why it would only show up in "normal mode" I can't say. Well, it could be malware hiding as your touchpad's driver, but that's a bit "out there" at this point. Might be worth checking Hardware manager, click "show hidden devices" and report any flagged devices there might be.

Hello,

I have a Dell Vostro 1510 running Windows XP. When I start my computer I get as far as the logon screen, but of course I can't click on a username to get to the desktop because the cursor won't move using the touchpad. I've never had a mouse attached to the computer so I'm guessing that buying a USB mouse and plugging it in won't solve my problem since I can't load the software? How do I get past the logon screen without having the ability to move the cursor? Everything I've read about bypassing the logon screen or using the keyboard to manipulate the cursor assumes I have the ability to get to "Start" -> "Run" or "Start -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel", which I don't.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you buy a basic USB mouse, you won't need any software.

It's worth a try if you want to go that route.

Hi,I've just recently bought an Open Box HP Pavillion 15 - AY009DX(X7T50UA). I immediately updated it using the Windows Update setting. After the update, everything seemed to work well except for the touchpad. I tried checking the Mouse Properties but there is nothing listed under Hardware and there was no other tabs except for the 4 which are Buttons, Pointers, Pointer Options, and Hardware. Everything I've read regarding this problem said to click Device Settings which I don't have.I also tried to check the Device Manager but it didn't show "Mice and other pointing devices" until I showed hidden devices. That must mean that there's something wrong with it. When I clicked the drop down arrow of "Mice and other pointing devices" there was one named "Microsoft PS/2 Mouse" and it also has an error sign (yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark inside). It says "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)."I tried to Update Driver Software and it changed into Synaptics SMBus Touchpad but it's still not working. I also rebooted the laptop after that but it's still not working. I uninstalled the Synaptics driver and installed the driver manually from the HP website and it's still not working even after rebooting it. I've also done the one where you remove the battery to clear it from electric charges or something and then holding down the power button for a minute and it still didn't work. I've tried to load setup... Read more

Hi, I've had a Lenovo P50 thinkpad for a few days, and initially the touchpad was working absoluely fine. But today it just randomly stopped functining all together. All the touchpad/tracker buttons/detection just doesn't respond.  I have to naivate my laptop using a mouse at the moment. I've tried re-installing the Synaptics pointing device driver but it didn't change anything - the touchpad is still unresponsive. I also noticed that when I drill into the "Mouse" properties under Control Panel, the touchpad/tracker options are disabled in the GUI, and only the touchpad is ticked (tracker is not ticked) - however, since they're disbaled I can't change anything.  I also checked my BIOS to see if the touchpad got disabled there, but it is actually enabled. Any ideas on what to do? Cheers

A:P50 touchpad not working

strange, just to confirm, is the trackpoint working?could it be a function + Fx key that turns off the trackpoint?I dont have my P50 handy, but just trying to help.
