M72e (0967-B4U) Failure after Latest Windows 10 Patch

Q: M72e (0967-B4U) Failure after Latest Windows 10 Patch

We were fortunate that we had a spare M72e unit for testing as we have several around our offices. All of these systems are Windows 10, Version 1703, Build 15063.786. We wanted to test Version 1709 before mass deployment (WSUS and Network Push) to everyone in the company. The inital 1709 build came out with no problems an even the BIOS update worked (F1JY72USA.exe, F1KT72A). Everything was running fine for a day and we attempted to get the latest Windows Security Patches for Specter and Meltdown. We were able to get the system to boot Once after this, did a quick test on our software and then restart to verify that all was good. It wasn't. The Fans in the system started to run full speed and no boot screen showed up. I let the system run for about 3 minutes before I shutdown and tried again with the same results.Next I pulled the memory to see if I could get a Post Beep. I received the Beep and then attempted to boot again with the same results. After the last failure I attempted to Clear the BIOS by pulling the battery and switching the jumper. I left the machine overnight and then plugged it in the next morning and the system fans ran High the entire time. I got a couple beeps, but the system would keep restarting over and over with the fans running high over and over.3 boots later I pulled the power and put everything back (battery, jumper) and attempted to boot normally thinking the BIOS was cleared. The system has no display and the fans run High all the time and it will not go past this point. I have taken the memory out and received a beep code. After all these failures I attempted to the a 30, 30, 30 button reset: Plug power with Power Button held in for 30 seconds, pull power with button held in 30 seconds, plug power back in with button held for 30 seconds. No luck. Fans still run High all the time, but now there is no Post Beep when I pull Memory. At this point I think the system is Bricked, but I didn't see any listing or warnings to avoid any of the Microsoft Updates and I'm wondering what to do next. We have several of these styles of machines out in our facility and I don't want to push any updates that will brick these machines, but we also need to do what we can to keep our network secure. Short of buying new systems (No Budget for this) are there any other suggestions or help that I may have missed or could this be an isolated insident. If it isn't, we can't justify leaving our network unsecure, but can't afford replacing all the units that are going to be bad.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Installation of latest Windows 10 update, which I believe is version 14393, fails after about 71% or so of the end action of installation, replacing version 10586.  The failure action is as follows.  After rebooting, a notice is displayed for less than a second, stating "Attempting to recover the installation of Windows" followed by another notice for less than a second, stating "Restroing your previous version of Windows."   After a few seconds the screen goes blank except for a rotating ring of dots that continues forever until my computer is switched off.

The lastest updates, on 1 October, have left my HP P2055D laser printer printing blank pages. The green light on the printer goes off as paper is drawn through. Only switching off and on again restores the light. I have download the latest driver and have tried removing and reinstalling the printer. I use HP cartridge so this isn't the result of HP's latest mission to block cheap imitations!

so I bought GTA IV , thinking that my system would be close to having the required specs.
Installed the game and found that I had graphics issues. So them did the usual updated drivers,
and downloaded game patches. The result? now the game won't load.

I went to the "Can You Run It" site and it tells me that my video card isn't good enough,
but the stats it lists , all pass. So color me confused. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Video Card
Minimum: 256MB NVIDIA 7900+ / 256MB ATI X1900+ You Have: GeForce 7300 LE
Features: Minimum attributes of your Video Card
Required
Video RAM 256 MB

Hardware T&L Yes
Pixel Shader version 3.0
Vertex Shader version 3.0

You Have
Video RAM 512.0 MB
3D Yes
Hardware T&L Yes
Pixel Shader version 3.0
Vertex Shader version 3.0
Upgrade Suggested: Unfortunately, your Video Card does not meet this requirement. Click here to see some recommendations.

So there must be some other specs that aren't listed that my card doesn't match because according to what i see my card should be good enough.

thanks for any input.

After the Anniversary update on our two PCs, I find that Homegroup will not connect the two. One is running Pro 64-bit and the other runs Home 32-bit.

I can leave the Homegroup on my PC (Pro) and on the other. Then I create a new Homegroup on my PC and get the password. However, the other PC does not see any Homegroup to join on the network (only the option to create a new Homegroup). I never had any problem with this prior to the update.

If I select My Computer, I can 'see' the other PC but when I select 'Open' and box comes up with ID and Password. My PC is the only one of the two that is password protected. The Home PC boots right to the desktop.

Anyone having the same issue or know of a workaround?

Thanks.

I need some major help with the latest Windows Update (the set of patches that came out this Tuesday to help with the security issues), I think it is causing issues for my laptop PC. I'm not computer illiterate but I'mdefinitely nothing more than a beginner and this is starting to make me panic a little ^_^;

My laptop has been having major Startup and boot issues since the update. My laptop freezes and goes to a white-grey screen. The computer does start up - ie: the screen comes on (white screen, unless I am lucky enough to get a boot screen for a moment) the fans run, but it takes several attempts at turning it on and off again, and hitting either F12 or F8 (still not sure which one is the one that works) to get to a screen that allows me to repair the Startup and go back to a retore point. The last time this happened it also beeped at me however I would not be able to tell you what the code sounded like (I...panicked somewhat).

However, the restore point was made just after Windows downloaded the updates onto my comouter (I had automatic updates on), and I cannot shut down without my computer wanting to install the updates. So I'm stuck in an endless cycle of downloading these updates, then being forced to restore.

Can anyone help with either finding a way to stop my laptop installing these updates, or does anyone know a way to troubleshoot the updates themselves?

Hey All,
Walked into complete chaos today at the office...seems like a Microsoft patch that was automatically updated on my users machines completely messed up their video settings.
The Dell GX270s would all boot up but then go blank after XP logo screen. As far as I can figure out, some new driver update threw the integrated Intel video driver out of whack causing it to use a resolution that the crt monitors can't handle. So far I have had to reinstall the intel driver and overwrite what was automatically installed.

Anyone else run into this today?

After applying KB4056894 to my windows 7 laptop, visual studio 2010 stopped working, manifesting all sorts of subtle bugs which did not go away even after fully repairing Visual Studio 2010.  In addition, the import settings operation returns fourteen
errors consistently, also new with KB4056894.  I just restored from a Nov 2017 system image and now everything is stable and functional again.
I have now blocked all future windows 7 updates, which is fine with me.  These updates always consumed a lot of time and I'll be happy to go without them starting now.
I also have windows 10 installed on the same laptop which I stopped using several months ago, in favor of Windows 7 due to the latest Windows 10 being such a horrible operating system.  It's even worse than Windows 8.  Sorry to say this, but it's
true!
At least in windows 7 all control panel settings reside in one control panel! I believe that Microsoft has been working on the new metro/universal app for settings since 2011 starting in windows 8!  It's now 2018 and these settings are still split between
the UWP settings app and the desktop control panel.  I thought I took a lot of time to get things done, however Microsoft takes the cake when it comes to taking time to get things done.

It took me almost a whole work day to drill down to the single patch causing the problem coming with the latest patch day.

It is kb3109094 which breaks the remote X display of the Xclient.
Please may somebody at microsoft have a look into this as kb3109094 is marked as a security patch and I suspect the security has been tightened too much here.
The whole process of finding the problem cause was very time consuming and it raises 3 questions for me:
Q1. Why can't I just download the patches that my system wants
without also automatically install them?
(It takes about 20 minutes up to an hour for my system to check the patch status if I invoke it manually and this is a process I have to repeat redundantly if I only install a subset of the shown patches in a single swoop)
After I had manually downloaded the required KBxxx.msu patches one by one I also had to install them one by one.
Q2. Why is there no GUI option to select a bunch of patches from a downloaded directory and install them in one go? (not forgetting to set a restore point before installing)
Q3. Why is there no easy! feedback channel for problems resulting from updates?

It may become worse with windows 10 automatic updates if a bad update breaks something and people cannot give feedback on this quickly.

I monitor and record various Microsoft Updates for Work, Today I discovered what I believe to be a mistake in online security guide:

I was looking at updates for Windows 10 version 1607 for 32 and 64 bit systems when i noticed an odd patch out

It appears to me the 4054517 patch which belongs to windows 10 version 1709 32 bit was wrongly attached to the 1607 32 bit

Clicking on download for this patch gives you a download list for the wrong version of windows 10?

Is there anyone who can confirm this

After the latest cumulative update, my data drive E: (WDC 2TB) would not allow access to some of its folders. Seems I no longer had permission, access was denied. Added "take ownership" to the context menu, pointed to the folders and was able to now open them. Did a reboot to recheck, now windows does not recognize the 2TB drive. Disk management says it is now RAW rather than NTFS??

System error log shows, "A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume E:", and detailed description "A corruption was found in a file system index structure. The file reference number is 0x100000000001d. The name of the file is "\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog". The corrupted index attribute is ":$I30:$INDEX_ALLOCATION".

Reformatted/checkdisk the drive and it acted normal. This morning when I turned it on, W10 said my 2TB drive needed repair, repair returned it to operation. Reboot did the same thing. WDC utilities say the drive "passed"

So? does this sound like a W10 update problem or hardware problem. HDD is about 3 weeks old. Never had that problem until the latest update. Coincidence or?? Opinions appreciated.

A:Latest W10 update or hardware failure?

2GigaByte or 2TeraByte? You may made a typo as far as the size of the drive which sounds like a flash drive at 2gb not a hard drive at 2tb!

The first question will be are you set to start receiving Insider builds in the Advanced option of the Start>Settings>Security&Update section by chance? Even when an update sees a bad install it generally won't effect the partition table on any drive ruling the Cumulative for whichever build of 10 you have out there. Being a new drive only three weeks and seeing problems would tend to suggest you may have to return it under manufacturer's/dealer type warranties for an exchange or refund since it could well have a defect! If this on an SSD or mechanical drive?

I am trying to get things going with my Dell Venue 8 Pro, and I go through the initial setup fine. However, when I do Windows Update the network fails to connect after the following reboot.

When I look at the device/driver, it says it is working, but when I do a network troubleshooting it claims it must be a bad driver.

The driver doesn't seem to have been updated, based on the fact that the button to roll back is grayed out.

When I do a restore of my system, it works again until I do the Windows Update.

I have done this a couple of times, once with all updates, including the optional updates, and once downloading only the critical and important updates.

Other than doing each update individually, is there a reasonable way to figure out what is causing my issue?

This is not exactly the same as your problem, but after installing Windows Updates yesterday, my pc took over 2 minutes longer to start. It just sat for 2 minutes with a black screen, then eventually booted on up. I restored the computer to a point prior to updates, then I installed updates one at a time and discovered the culprit for me was KB2903939. Details are in this thread.... Windows Update Notification for December 10th 2013

This may or may not help you - however, I have not found an answer yet for this. I think it has something to do with drivers and I am getting Event Viewer Errors 200,201,202 on startup - Device Startup Manager, indicating 3 various managers not connected...Windows Metadata, PC Network List, and Windows Update. I am working on solution, but just wanted you to know which update I am having problems with. Hope this helps.

So today I saw I had new updates to install, and I installed like I normally do, and everything went fine. Then I noticed out of the 7 that were installed, both the security updates (Net Framework 3.5.1 and KB2667402) failed to work, and since then, I have not been able to get them to install correctly

What I've tried-v
-Disabling User Account Control.
-Disabling Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware (Avast! and Spyware Terminator).
-Downloading the update directly from the Microsoft Website using a different installer.
-Running Microsoft Fixit and then trying to install them again.
-Virus Scanning. Found one corrupted file which, when removed, did not change the issue.
-Running Checkdisc for errors. This also did not change the issue.

It is worth mentioning that Avast! Found and removed a Java:bitcoin-A [Trj.] a few days ago, it could possibly be related to this?

Never had a problem like this before with Windows Updates, so I'm really confused as to what I can do.

A:Repeating failure to install latest security updates.

It's possible that a virus or malware has changed your system and that is why the updates aren't working. Personally I would dump avast and the terminator, relace with MSE if your going free. You might want to check the your system files haven't been altered and are all present. Click start ---> run , then type cmd and hit enter. You will get the command prompt window. Type sfc /scannow and let that run, it will tell you and fix any missing corrupt, altered system files. If it fixes somthing retry the updates and let us know the result.

I have an M72e type:4004, when the device is powered off and the powercable is plugged in the fan immediately goes to what sounds like 100%. Once the device is powered on the fan seems to slow to about 80%.  I have already attempted to modify the cooling policy in bios to no effect. I have also tried a cmos reset but that hasn't helped. I am out of ideas and hoping for help. Debian OS Thank you

I see that the GeForce GTX 750 Ti is popular.  On a search, should I also include 'low profile'?   I have also found some 1 GB cards cheaper, but not a 'Ti' model, still looks like it would fit.  I am surprised of the video power of just the mobo alone, but I have a second monitor I want to use sometime.     M72e, 0958-B2U  Core i5

Over time here we've learned that the most fatal and irreparable cause of Win7 failure to boot is labeled by Startup Repair as a bad patch. As it's often reported by OP as having been Windows Update or a driver just installed I'm wondering if there is some last-resort surgery that can be done when all other known repairs solutions fail.

I am testing right now if all recent content of System32/drivers can be backed up and then deleted in Windows Recovery console using Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console. If the fatal driver is gone my thinking is that Win7 might start and reload all drivers from Driver Store.

I'd also like to test if recently installed Updates can be backed up and deleted from their install location similarly using a boot disk. I realize this is fraught with danger and merely is experimental to save an installation in which all else has been tried and hope lost.

Can any Updates experts suggest where exactly to look and what to include to get the latest Updates? Any predictions on efficacy, or other ideas to save installs that won't boot on this error?

A:Boot failure due to "bad patch" - need fix collaborators

Beware of relying on file dates for anything in the System32 structure - the apparent dates may be vastly different from the installed dates, and some of the files are dynamic as well.

If the problem is truly 'failed updates' check the softwaredistribution\ folders to see what's there - it should give some clues, and the dates will be more reliable.

Hi,I have a M72e, Window 7 Pro computer here who's processor fan speed is running constantly at 100% even at boot up. To ensure this is not a over heating issue, I checked CPU with SpeedFan and ALL temperature readings are in the mid 40's and below. I tried moving the RAM from SLOT1 to SLOT2 with no change to fan speed. Restored BIOS to Default and Clear CMOS using the following (Solved! Go to Solution) instructions from post  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/tc01_en/thread-id/13722/page/1  but still the processor fan is constantly running at full speed.  Are there instructions for the M72e to Clear CMOS ?What other options I can try to get the fan speed back to normal?

We purchased over 200 of the Lenovo M72e SFF desktops just over three years ago. During that time we have had close to a dozen warranty replacements of system boards. Now that we are out of warranty we continue to have the same amount of failures but cannot obtain replacement system boards from Lenovo parts store or third party vendors because they have been discontinued without any other options. The symptoms are the same in every instance -  high RPM fan speed on power up with no video or POST activity. During warranty, the only solution was to reseat RAM (which worked on a very small number of boards) or replacement of the system board by an on-site service technicians. Failures are coming from multiple buildings and are all in typical office locations. The technicians told us this wasn't a rare issue and that many other places had similar issues and that it was a common repair for them. We are currently sitting on 8 non-working out of warranty M72e desktops with this same issue but can't get replacement parts. Lenovo wants $650 per desktop to out of warranty depot repair which is more than the original cost we paid for them. We would be happy to obtain reasonably priced replacement system boards and repair them in house. We purchase only Lenovo desktops and laptops at the moment and have a standing order for 200 more on hold because of this. This is creating problems for the purchasing decisions based on how many failures we've had.  Is ... Read more

Hello there, I recently bought a used Lenovo M72e Form Factor Desktop CPU.Its Machine Type is 3664A13 and Serial number is PB6FAF2. It is running F1KT25AUS 08/23/2013 Bios version. I want to update the bios to latest version. I saw the lenovo support site and found many versions for it. Now my understanding is that that latest version which starts with F1K should be the one compatible with my PC. I found this file on the pagehttps://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkcentre_bios/f1jy71usa.exe Now it does start with the correct F1KT and this is the Version F1KT71A. My problem is that my installed BIOS shows AUS at the end while this version Shows USA at the end. I have tried many things changing Country on the top right corner of the page but every time only this file shows up. Here is my question. Can I install the USA version of the file on my computer? Will it be safe?  If not, where can I find the correct BIOS for my PC. Thank you very much

Unauthorized Patch For Microsoft WMF Bug Sparks Controversy

Sober worm may hit tomorrow, but businesses are more concerned about the WFM vulnerability and Microsoft's inability to produce a patch this week. Some are choosing an alternative that could lead to other problems.

Concerns over the lack of a Microsoft-issued patch have pushed the Windows Metafile/Zero-Day bug to top of mind, surpassing even tomorrow's much-anticipated Sober worm attack.

The lag time between the Dec. 27 discovery of the WMF vulnerability and Microsoft's planned Jan. 10 patch availability has forced IT security departments to find alternative means for protecting their systems and prompted a non-Microsoft developer to create a patch that others could use.

All of this serves to damage Microsoft's reputation as a company that can secure its own products—a reputation that only recently was beginning to improve after years of being dragged through the mud. Experts are divided over whether it's wise to use Ilfak Guilfanov's Hexblog patch to fix the WMF vulnerability, which could allow attackers to use WMF images to execute malicious code on their victims' computers. Some say it's a necessary measure to protect systems until the official Microsoft patch arrives; others say it's not worth the extra work to patch twice or to take the risk of using a third-party fix.

The case is pretty similar to a M92p.    I see on the back the connectivity is a bit less.    Good news is that the 3.2 GHz i5 is new enough to have Win 10 support.
