Quark 7 stopped working - high cpu usage-memory usage ? Virus??

Q: Quark 7 stopped working - high cpu usage-memory usage ? Virus??

Hijack log below

Two weeks ago my Quark 7 stopped working - it will start and come up with the splash screen, but then will not go any further - a list of processes shows it's running at 50 cpu usage and 78944 memory usage. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling and have ran Norton's Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner to no avail. I have attached my HiJack log below.

The main programs that I use daily (and yes Quark is one of them) are the following

Adobe Photoshop CS3, ACDSee 9, Outlook express, Quark 7.0, Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver 8

Thank you for taking the time - I'm pretty frustrated!

Preferred Solution: Quark 7 stopped working - high cpu usage-memory usage ? Virus??

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello everyone, I've been having a very weird problem recently, in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage. Sometimes I will be doing things such as playing a game, or watching a stream, and my computer will run fine for a little while. But at random times, my computer will majorly slow down and sometimes even crash. If it doesn't crash, sometimes it will get so slow to the point where I have to hold down the power button and manually shut it down. Every time my computer slows down I notice it is using a TON of physical memory. It's actually happening right now. My computer is going very slow and it's using 6.22 GB memory out of 8. There are no big programs running right now, so I don't understand why it's being slow. I hope someone is able to help. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Update: I just tried to open chrome, and the computer froze completely. It would not unfreeze. After leaving it frozen for a minute or two, the screen went black. This is becoming very frustrating.

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

My friend, who has a very low income was given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Can anyonre help???

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!

A:Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

Another techinique is for the process to alter the registry and add itself as a Startup program so that it can run automatically each time the computer is booted. Hi,

Just yesterday I realized that my computer was acting super slowly and I even received a blue screen of death out of nowhere. Upon checking my processes list,I found many suspicious processes that continued to multiply when I tried to end them. These included: PresentationHost.exe, msdtc.exe, dllhost.exe, prevhost.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe, conhost.exe, and even a notepad.exe that seems to be invisible. A malware is most likely behind this, and is causing my computer to perform very slowly and be almost unusable, I have managed to run FRST, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not even opening for me. In addition, this multiplying issue seems to only occur when I am connected to the internet. I would highly appreciate some help!

Maybe someone can direct me regarding what I might be able to do with regards to my having a sluggish browser (FF). Please don't say try Chrome because FF is indeed still better (Faster & much more customizable) !! That said...I seem to have  a problem with FF constantly getting "hung up" not responding) particularly after the memory usage from the browser rises above 600,000 k.I ALWAYS have anywhere between 50 to 125 tabs "loaded" but,not necessarily "loaded". Whaaat!!  225 tabs??   Methinks therein lies your problem.  Maybe you are expecting too much from an extension too.  It's not the job of an extension to monitor system resources.

Hi everyone,

About two weeks ago my computer wouldn't get into windows and would continuously be on the black screen with it appearing to load. Eventually I got it to safe mode and got it to a point where it would start properly. It clearly looked as if I had a virus running so I ran multiple scanners and removed what it came up with and then it started running better.

Since then though memory usage has been very high. Looking at task manager physical memory is at 73% and there is nothing under the processes tab to suggest memory use is that high. Also internet explorer memory use at times can get very very high up to probably 500,000 K. I ran Trendmicro housecall 6.6 a few days ago and that removed a couple of things but it has still been like this. Everything has been running very slowly and for the last couple of days I have got messages saying the computer is running out of memory please close the following programs. I managed to run DDS and here is the log posted underneath, but when I tried to run GMER I got the blue screen of death and it shut my computer down.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have,
Michael

I downgraded back down to windows 8 after feeling some sluggishness with my windows 10 OS.
It started off fine, but once I started downloading and installing necessary windows update files, I noticed once again the sluggishness I felt before, except this time my System Disk which is also my SSD drive, was being used up to 100% while my CPU was completely fine

Can someone please help me out in this scenario.

See link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/318854/physical-memory-increases-to-98-over-a-few-days/Here's what's happening. Upon booting up, it seems to take a bit too long to even to get to the Vista logo; then, when booted up, the harddrive seems to be running constantly for about an hour or so, yet nothing is loading;lastly, when the computer is on for a few days at a time, the physical memory seems to increase, eventually getting to anywhere from 75% to 90+%, yet I don't have to use the computer to do this - it can just be on and maybe just have Outlook running.Specs:OS: Vista Home Premium SP2 (x64)Processor: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9300 2.5GhzRAM: 4GbFree Space: 244Gb free/465Gb total

I've been looking at windows task manager and I think I've found the culprit. I rebooted my computer just to make sure and I believe its one of the 12 svchost.exe processes running on my computer. I assume that there is my problem but I am not exactly sure so I was wondering if anyone here could help me out. Thanks.

Hi.
I was using my laptop a few days ago. I left to go out and came back about an hour later. I notice my CPU usage was running @ 100% & the memory @ 80%.My laptop just stopped. I went into safe mode and that is where I am currently . I have deleted almost everything I don't use(didn't mind).I've even gone to msconfig to check off things i don't use.The initial response was good.CPU usage dropped, but as soon as I used the internet, rebooted or used an Icon everything that I discontinued in msconfig would be checked again.I did this several times.
I ran Iobit Advance system care w/ everything that it possess & ran Spyhunter all in safe mode.It did'nt come up with much.I am currently Googling for anything that match my criteria. There are a few but no good remedies. I don't have a backup disk to use to restore or else I would have tried.I am looking for any good advice. I hope that i dont have to replace the processor or the memory. I mostly use this laptop for games, emails, social media, and searches. Please help. Thanks

Hi

This has been happening a lot recently, been experiencing a really slow internet browsing on both fire fox and interenet explorer 7 and whenever i'm using firefox it sometimes freezes than works again after a few secs, also having a hard time loading videos on youtube where videos stop loading. Was thinking maybe related to cpu and memory usage, checked windows task manager and see that sometimes have high memory usage like yesterday svchost.exe was running at around 60 000k, ran both spybot and ad-aware but only found cookies related nothing big.

So don't know if memory related problem or infected computer, would really appreciate for someone to have a look at my log and tell me the problem.

There is a serious issue with svchost.exe on my windows 7 computer. My HP Touchsmart 300-1025 has windows 7 64bit installed and svchost is slowing down the computer and using very high cpu and memory usage. It is not a virus or malware. I know the computer is not infected because one the computer has webroot and two if it was a virus or malware I would not be able to use the computer at all. So it has to be an issue with windows 7 64bit itself. Here is a screenshot of what I'm talking about and proof.

A:High Memory Usage, & High CPU usage

The thing to do is use Task Manager ( right click on task bar at bottom of the screen, and choose Task Manager ). Then click on the Processes tab, click on the CPU column header so it sorts the rows by cpu usage. So now you will see the processes that use a lot of cpu.

If you are using Vista, or Windows 7; pull down the View menu, choose 'select columns' and then checkmark 'command line'. Then each row will give the location of the program on the hard drive.

Using poolmon the pooltag SpDN showed up with a memory leak. It leads to the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver, iaStorV.sys. How should I go about fixing the problem?

Hi,

Since this is a Intel driver I doubt the WDK can fix it.
You may try to see if there's a more current version of Intel's RST available for download and see if that fixes the leakage issue.

Cheers,

The each have identical laptops and both are experience identical problems.  Both are running Avast! and both systems are not turning up any discovered viruses or trojans during scans.  I am on the verge of completely refronting both of their laptops and am really hoping I can avoid having to do that.  I suspected that maybe they were both infected with "poweliks" but the below FRST shows (at least I think so) that neither are infected with that trojan.  I am now thinking its a memory leak on some recent driver/app update - but either trojan or memory leak, I am not finding it.

Symptoms:
After a clean reboot, within 24 to 48 hours both systems begin to get very sluggish, both audio and video starts to skip and lag, both mice bounce around like crazy when trying to move the pointer.  After about 72 hours the laptops simply freeze to the point that they have to pull the batteries to get them to shut off.

I had my Dad run FRST on his computer, below are the results:

Hello there!

First of all, thanks ahead for time spent helping me with my problem, it is truly appreciated!

So, onto my problem..

Since a short period of barely 2 weeks my RAM usage has been sky-high. I have a total of 16GB memory, which has never let me down in the over 3 years that I've used it. During usage of my computer, my memory has normally (in idle situations) never really exceeded 20%, except recently it idles between 40-70%. Sometimes it even spikes up to 80-90% and occasionally it sits at 98-100%; which basically makes my computer un-usable (as you can see on this image; nothing using much memory, yet sitting at 98%). Whenever I reboot my computer, the problem 'resets' itself and after boot it sits on 40-70% again (rarely it sits on 98-100% again after rebooting!).

To add to this; I've also had a few blue screen crashes (which I normally never get). I have pictures of my phone of the stop codes and 'what failed' (I can supply the information if needed). The last time it crashed (over 2 weeks ago), it could not boot and wanted to do an automatic repair, after which booting succeeded. After this I used the program "WhoCrashed" to find out what the problem was, I have the logs from that saved on my desktop and can attach them if needed.

At first I thought it was a memory leak caused by a driver, but after reviewing/updating my drivers, the problem didn't go away and it didn't make sense (to me) that the problem re-occured after a reboot. ... Read more

Hi, I have a Lenovo U410 Touch laptop. My problem is that the memory usage seems extremely high and it seems to be causing problems when I tab between programmes. I have 4GB of memory and even now with nothing other than Firefox and Task Manager actively open memory usage is 69% (2.7GB).

This seems very high to me. There are a ton of background processes running, only some of which I have any idea what they are doing. [email protected] attached a list of the processes running now.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy. I'm running Win 7 & every time I open Int. Ex. (even when absolutely nothing else is running) I get a flag from Norton saying "High Mem Usage by Int Ex". I was thinking of getting another mem stick but someone suggested I could divert more of the mem resources to Int Ex. They didn't know how, though
Appreciate the help

I suspect I’ve been infected with a Bitcoin miner. Memory usage is way higher than it should be, and over the past few days, CPU usage averages 20-25% with no tasks really calling on the CPU.

Here is the information about my system:
Operating System:  Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit
Processor:  Intel i7-5960X @ 3.00 GHz, not overclocked
Installed Memory:  32GB

Last night I restarted. When I ran Windows Task Manager first thing this morning, CPU usage was at 22% and memory usage was 85%. Malwarebytes and Windows Defender scans don’t turn up anything.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Do Nothing! Simple yes? Good. Stop worrying about memory until you actually have performance issues that can be tracked back to memory usage.

Hi Guys,

I am running windows 8.1 on an Acer Machine which has 8 GB of memory. I was just going through the performance and noticed that 7.9 GB of memory is being used even when there is absolutely no program running. I assume its a malware attack and hence, would need some help in removing whatever infected me. Would appreciate if someone can guide me through it.
I would be starting off with the following steps and will post the logs as it goes:

first off im new to posting on here and id like to say hello to everyone

lately ive been getting weird spikes on my computer, not on the internet but just my computer itself seems slow. it seems that my physical memory is always around 50% - 60% but my cpu is 0%. i also noticed that its running 60-70 processes, not at startup, but when im just at average computer use. i took a screen shot of my task manager and my resource manager:

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/2646/92413957.png

i also have hijackthis if needed. i was concerned about such high use of the "hardware reserved", 2089mb...seems high to me? ive seen other posts on here with half of that and my friend has 3mb hardware reserved. sorry for the wall of text and thanks for help in advance.

A:high memory usage

Welcome to Seven Forums tsoaf. Those numbers don't seem bad, it's just all relative to how much memory you have. See my numbers, but I have twice as much memory.

I have 63 processes running. I think 2 gig memory is the minimum these days, but as long as you aren't running out of memory when you are doing tasks, you are ok. memory is there to be used, and based on the comparison, I don't think your usage is high, but more that you could use another 2 gigs

A Guy

Edit:

Hmmm, just looked at your pic again, and it seems to say you have 4gig, but only 2 are available? If you fill in your system specs, we can dig deeper. Let us know how much memory is installed, it may be that only half is being used?

A better way of understanding what possibly can create a memory leak is using the Details tab of Windows 8 Task Manager or the integrated in the system Performance Monitor. For best acknowledgment of how the things are going at the current moment, I suggest posting a screenshot from set down Process Explorer with Private Bytes tab enabled.

Hi ive been noticing my memory usage has been idling pretty high and I cant tell if its normal or not. Im not home right now so I cant provide specifics but I have 4gb of memory and and im usually idling at around 35-45% usage. I have windows 7 and disabled a ton of non-essential services and am down to 33 (includes all users).

I noticed svchost is taking up 170mb and on my brothers computer, only 50mb. Idk if thats suspicious or not but my svchost has only 5 services and his about 8-10 (I disabled a lot). So im confused as to why mine takes up so much more memory.

Also the main thing is I added up the usage from all the processes displaying from all users and its only 450-500mb, yet im idling at 40% usage which is 1.6gb. Is this normal for the task manager to not add up to the total usage?

Hi guys,

I have been having issues with my computer the past few weeks. The disk usage has been jumping up to 100% frequently, and the memory usage is up in the 80's. CPU usage is on the high side too. I don't have much running, the biggest drain seems to be firefox. I wonder if there is something running in the background that could be the cause?

Also, maybe a windows 10 issue, but when i try to shut down about 50% of the time it just starts up again?

I should maybe also mention that i use a dual-monitor set-up.

I have uninstalled any unnecessary programs, i have run AVG free, CCleaner and Spybot, all seem clean.

My PC specs are (Speccy):

hello all, I found my PC really slow after a while of use, checking Task Manager found that my total percent of memory was at 99% while playing BF3, funny thing today also 2 friends had exactly the same problem, friend's PC system X79 SSD RAID nvidia 670 32gb, my other friend's PC intel 1356 HHD ati 6870 6gb trichannel and my system AMD 790fxt SSD ati 7970 16gb we all are running Windows 8 PRO 64bits fresh install.

I been searching google about this issue, some people claim is AMD CCC issue other say to disable superfetch also some posts about page file... all this tell me that is a memory leak under windows 8 and not a hardware related.

found this post at microsoft community Memory Usage in Windows 8 - Microsoft Community

So far only fix that work is full reboot
I will update with screenshots if I get the memory leak

Hello Bleepingcomputer.com! I just spent like 20 minutes writing a post and then the issue I am talking about caused chrome to just not work with me and I lost all the things I had typed! I'm gonna cut it short this time.

Anyways. Basically on my roughly 2 year old computer I have high memory usage for no reason and it's slowing down my computer where it's gotten to the point that even opening skype can bring it to a grinding halt. I've tried fixing it myself and can't do it. I've spent countless hours trying to fix it and I just can't, so I need the help of someone who's better with computers than I am to help me. I've run virus scans and memory diagnostics and a crap ton of other things to try to figure out what's wrong and I can't figure it out. I've been dealing with this for a few months and it just keeps getting worse, it used to never use much even when running bigger programs, but things I could run before now I can't because something is hogging way too much memory.. If anyone would be willing to take the time to work with me to help fix my computer I'd be very grateful.

Is 1.36 GB memory used abnormally high for 7? i was scouting through what little system information i could find (never had vista, kinda lost on some things) and i saw that my video card is sharing some system memory. then on the performance tab of the task manager i only see 3038 MB of RAM total, but i've got 4 GB installed.

My system isn't running slow or anything like that i just thought it odd that the memory usage was hovering at a near constant 46% used. The amount that my video card says is shared is like 1263 MB, is that counted towards the total used memory (cached included)? or is that 1263 MB sitting in the page file for later use?

I've got a FX-60, 4 GB of RAM, and a 500 MB 7900 GTX OC, does my video card really need to have another 1.2 GB shared from system memory?

A:High memory usage?

It's pretty normal I suppose. The reason it's only accessing 3.3 gb of memory and not the full 4 is normal for a 32 bit OS. If you had 64 bit it would be like mine shown here.
