Re: L440/L540 second ram slot

Q: Re: L440/L540 second ram slot

So I got 2x8gb of RAM, my L440 came with 4. I took out the 4gb slot and put the first 8gb stick on there. My problem is that I can't put on the second RAM stick. The RAM pins dont slide in like the first one. I try to lightly push it in but It doesnt slide in the slot. Am I doing something wrong? Where exactly are the pins supposed to go?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Mui, welcome to the community,

there are two slots, one on top of the other, on the L440. When inserting RAM you need to ensure that you initially position and insert the module at an angle of about 20° to the slot and then push it down into place. See p74 (pdf p80) of the Harware Maintenance Manual.

If needs require I'm sure you will loads of video tutorials on YouTube. And please don't forget to let us know how you got on.

Would anyone from Lenovo be able to give me the 'supplier part number' for an 8GB DRAM or DDR DIMM that works with this L440 Laptop - Type 20ASS06Y00 S/N R9****** ?

A:L440/L540 ram compatibility

03X6657 is the Lenovo part number.  That corresponds to several manufacturers' part numbers off various brands.

If you are buying non-Lenovo-branded RAM, you need DDR3L (1.35v) 1600 mHz SODIMM.  It might be described as PC3-12800.  Avoid RAM labeled Value Ram.  I always suggest checking return policy on RAM before buying.  Everybody has their favorite brands.  If I am buying RAM for myself, I like Corsair Vengeance.  I have never had a failure or a compatibility problem.

I have a AMD 7870 Dual slot video card on my Asus M5A99X-Evo Motherboard. It is installed in the first 16x slot...and I also have a PCI-e 1x XF-I Titanium Sound card. The problem I am having is that one of the 1x slots is covered by the video card, and the 2nd one is open, but right smack below the Video card. My Video card is the Sapphire 7870 GHz Edition non OC.. Attached is a picture of what I am trying to explain. My other question is: Will this cause issues since one of the GPU fans is semi covered? Its it recommended? Last question: If I move this to one of the 8x slots below on my motherboard, will it cause my 16x PCI-E slot to slow down? Thanks ahead of time for any help you can provide.

Computer Specs -

Asus M5A99x-Evo Motherboard (AM3+)
AMD FX 8350 8 Core (4Ghz)
Sapphire AMD Radeon 7870 GHz Edition (2GB)
8GB DDR3 1600 Kingston HyperX memory (2x 4GB)
500GB WD Black Edtion SATA HD
1TB WD Black Edtion SATA HD
Sound Blaster XF-I Titanium PCI-E 1x Sound Card
Thremaltake 750 80+ Bronze PS (Smart Series)
DVDRW (SATA)
DVD-ROM (SATA)

A:Question about PCI-e slot below dual slot video card

My opinion ...

Yes, setting up like that will have an impact. The air flow to your GPU will be restricted so it will more than likely run hotter than it did. It may still stay withing recommended specs, but it will run hotter.

The motherboard has onboard sound (Realtek® ALC892 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC ), any particular reason why you don't use that? Onboard sound is perfectly good for gaming and the like now, its not like older machines where you needed a dedicated card for decent quality. In my opinion, you only need a dedicated card if you are doing a lot of detailed audio work (mixing, remastering and other specific audio work). This would totally remove the issue.

The AGP vid card though comes out with a Adaptor to make it so you can plug in moniters

Anyway Should I leave my moniter plug in the AGP slot video card or put it where no video card is but goes right into the computer

and no there is no plug that goes into the PCI slot

I hope this is understanable

thanks

That's known as integrated graphics, now do you have a PCI video card and an APG video card or an Integrated video card and an AGP card?

Also what are they Radeon xxxx? or Nvidia xxxx? we need to know the model numbers to tell you which is the better on to use.

after figuring out it was a RAM problem i tried another stick of RAM but same problem so i guess its the actual slot it goes into, i only have 2 on my motherboard lucky one of them is working still.

has anyone had this problem or know of a way to fix it, i am wondering if some of the canned air/gas became a liquid from spraying to close and got in it.

any help would be appreciated thanks.

This is the strangest thing I've seen in the past 10 years of using computers. I have an Acer Aspire 7535-5020 laptop that came with windows 7, but I'm very picky and I wanted Windows xp back so I went onto Acer's website and downloaded all of the windows xp drivers and then formatted the laptop to Windows XP with intergrated Service Pack 3.

The computer works just fine except for one very strange oddity - the USB mouse I'm using only works when plugged into the first USB slot, it will refuse to work in the other 3 USB slots.

I'm using a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 USB which is my favorite mouse and I have 3 of them at home. When I was formatting the laptop, I had the mouse plugged into the first USB slot and now that is the ONLY slot it will work in. If I plug it into the other usb slots, the red laser will come on which means it's getting power, but it will not move the cursor and clicking either of the mouse buttons won't do anything.

When I have the Device Manager open, and I plug the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 mouse into the first USB slot, the 'Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0' entry will appear in BOTH the 'Human Interface Devices' tab and also the 'Mice and other pointing devices' tab.

However, when plugging the mouse into the other 3 usb slots, the 'Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0' entry will only appear in the 'Human Interface Devices' but NOT the 'Mice and other pointing devices' tab.

so please let me know how do i know which pci slot i have?

A:which graphic card slot do i require for my PCI slot

The type of memory doesn't matter, its the type of interface the computer supports among a few other things to watch for.

You likely have a PCI-Express slot, as long as it a x16 slot it doesn't really matter if its a version 1.1 or 2.0 slot.

Is this for your Dell or another computer? Whats you budget and what needs do you have for the video card?

First of all the boot now takes quite a long time and second after the sign in page on win 10, the screen will be black for a moment, for about 20 seconds or so. Is it a issue with the HDD, Win 10 or with the laptop ? Btw the HDD gets also quite hot.

Welcome to the forum!

According to the original specs you should use DDR3-12800 (1600) RAM source: link (click on the "Specifications" tab)

1866 RAM will probably work, but it will slow down to 1600 speeds. If I were you I would either play safe or make sure the vendor accepts returns in case it doesn't work.

Also avoid any "Value RAM" or "Value Select" modules, as well as any no-name brands.

Recently bought an old L540.Great machine in excellent condition. Original keyboard wasn't backlit, and the trackpad was the horrible one without the 3 buttons on top. I tried changing the keyboard (ebay one), and it works great.. Except the backlight.. Filing complaint to seller. However - the trackpad is what bothers me. I've installed win 10. The newest edition. 1803. The trackpad I bought is: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Trackpad-Touchpad-Three-Keys-Button-for-IBM-Lenovo-Thinkpad-L440-L540-L450-... The 3 buttons work.Pressing and dragging rarely works.Multitouch is not even an option. Like scrolling on the web using 2 or 3 fingers. I've searched everywhere for drivers for it. Newest ones, old ones, removing files, following guides. Jeez I worked hard. Still no solution. So my question stands:Have anyone had similar experience replacing the trackpad, and then making it work properly? The trackpad has a name: LEN2004 I'd love to name all the driver versions I've tried - but I exploded and decided to reinstall windows 10 completely, with the new trackpad installed as well. But once that's done, I will go through all the processes once more, in case no one has come up with some advice. I hope you can help me out - else I'll have to use the old original one. Regards Thomas

I have an L440 (20AS) that has an M.2 expansion slot. My laptop is having the stock 500GB HDD as the only storage installed as of now. I am thinking of installing an M.2 SSD and using that as the primary boot disk, while keeping my current HDD as it is for pure storage purpose. I have a few questions:1. Is it possible to have such configuration without any hiccups?2. If yes, which would be the best M.2 disk to buy? Any suggestions?3. Is there any way to transfer my current system from existing HDD without reinstalling Windows (I am on Windows 10) on the M.2 SSD? My current C: drive is 65GB (25GB free). All data except installed softwares are in D: drive which is 400GB. So if everything is OK, I will try to buy an M.2 SSD around 128GB and will have to transfer my current C: to that, if that's possible.

Hi, There seems to be some problem detected for my original 16GB M.2 SSD, so I want to replace it with a new one. I bought the following one, which should be compatible https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KBZH72I/ref=twister_B00KBZH7E6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 My question is, after I get it, should I just remove the original one and install the new one? Is there any other thing I should to complete the replacement? The OS is on my HDD, but I don't plan to move it to the new SSD. In this case, do I just need to remove the old one and install the new one? The reason why I ask is that the manual says: "Ensure that you partition the M.2 solid-state drive after installing it on the computer you are servicing. Otherwise, the M.2 solid-state drive will not function correctly." Thanks a lot!

Hello finally I got my L440 and made RAM upgrade to 16GB and I also want it to have an SSD. After reading all the manuals and forum messages I think that it have  a sutiable port for an mSATA SDD which will solve my problem in a great way without replacing anything.

My question is, my machine didn't come with an mSATA or WWAN option. While making the RAM upgrade I checked the ports and there is only one seems to be suitable for mSATA but since area is too small I couldn't be sure if it is the one. Can you please check the attachment and tell me if any mSATA will fit in that port? Or maybe it is not for mSATA and I should go with the traditional SSD solutions by replacing the disc?

Hi,

According to the Hardware Maintenance Manual, page 70 that slot is for a WWAN card or M.2 SSD.  An mSATA SSD will not fit.

From what I read here in the boards, finding a high capacity SSD in the right physical size is  a problem.  There are multiple sizes - IIRC the 42mm version is used in Lenovo laptops.

My L440 goes from power on to logon in literally a few seconds and I still have the 512GB HDD available for things that don't need the blinding speed of the SSD.

Some of them do not have a camera installed, you should check the invoice or the label on the box for features included in the notebook you purchased. You can returned it to the store and get another one that has the features you wanted. Good luck.

Hey @all,i'm new in the forum, but i am using Thinkpads for years. I run my L540 (i5-4300M CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD) in a Pro Dock (40A1) with an external 4K Display. The Video Performance is very bad with that 4K Display, not only Video, minimazing and maximazing Windows isn't smooth...it really jearks. So my question: does Upgrading my CPU to a i7 CPU improve the video performance?Second question: must i use a 37W TDP CPU (4702MQ or 4712MQ) or does it also work with a 47W TDP CPU (4710MQ)?Thanks for your help!!!Many Greetings,Baschi

I purchased an L540 with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed in 2014.  Currently I have version 6.1 (Build 7601 Service Pack 1), and am NOT having any technical issues.  However, my SquareTrade extended warranty expires soon (in October), and I have been wondering if I should upgrade to Windows 10 (probably along with the Classic Shell app).  Just browsing the forum, I see a number of posts that reflect various issues with upgrading to Windows 10, and can't really tell if those issues have been resolved by now.  I know that Microsoft plans to support Windows 7 Professional until January 2020, by which time by laptop will be 6 years old.  Any advice on whether it is worthwhile to upgrade and comments on the cost/difficulty of the process?

Trying to update the BIOS past 1.88.  Update is available with System Update and the web but it will not install.  Checked the BIOS and it allows updating.  Tried downloading both options from lenovo support as well (OSI and FLASH).  Neither worked.  Im wondering if it is my machine or the software.  Trying to secure against Spectra on this thing and need the March update to do it.  AHH!

Hi everyone, I am trying to add a second HDD to my L540 using a caddy for the Ultrabay. The primary HDD is a Samsung 128GB SSD, 2,5", attached to the internal SATA3 port. The OS is  on the internal disk, and for various reasons I have no way to change this (why would I, anyway?).The interesting part comes when I insert the second disk and boot the machine, the boot manager chain (GRUB -> Smartcard login on a mini Linux system -> GRUB4DOS -> Windows)  fails to load windows and displays a blank screen. The reason is that the internal disk is seen by Windows and Linux alike to be attached to Bus Number 4, Target Id 0, LUN0, and the second disk is on Bus Number 0, Target Id 0, LUN0. Which basically means that the second disk is enumerated _before_ the internal disk, and the boot manager chain does not find the Windows OS that should be booted. Screenshots from Windows Device Manager: I played around with my own GRUB4DOS settings but I cannot make the system accept that the internal disk is the first disk. (The second disk works fine when I hot plug it after Windows boot but this is not a permanent solution...) Q: What makes the OSes (and the BIOS, I assume, which I can only view but not change due to a BIOS supervisor password) think that the internal disk should be enumerated second? Confused... Thank you for any insight!

I'm considering building an external GPU setup for my laptop (thinkpad L540), wanted to check if anyone had done it. I saw it listed on techinferno's list of candidate systems, so I'm assuming it is possible. Does the L540's PCI slot allow for this sort of thing (or might there be another way of doing it?)? I guess my main concern is that there's some aspect of that connection that won't support an eGPU and this whole thing would be a waste. Whether you've done it or not, any insight is appreciated!

External screen is working completely fine.Do you have any suggestions what can be the problem? Thanks in advance. StevO

I am trying to 'dual display' my L540 to my TV. I have a mini dvi port (or whatever it is!) converter plugged into that port with an HDMI lead plugged into that and then into an HDMI socket on my TV. I assumed this would then be dead easy to just select dual monitors or similar and the laptop output would be duplicated on the TV. However I'm not getting anything on the TV. Is there some other setting I need to change other than in Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Display>Change Display Settings? Under Muliple Displays I select Duplicate these displays and Apply but all that happens is that the display resolution on the laptop goes really big ie nothing appears on my TV. It feels like the laptop is not even detecting anything attached to the mini DVI port - would this be driver related or is there something else I'm overlooking? Really want to fix this as I'm hoping to be able to play Youtube vids (with sound) from the laptop through the TV and maybe also Amazon movies. Any help gratefully received!!

A:L440 LCD backlight issue

Hi Shlapenka,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

We are sorry to hear that LCD backlight is not working in L440 laptop.

Usually, these symptoms indicate a blown fuse on the motherboard.  The issue comes up frequently when LED-backlight screens are broken.  Lenovo does not do this type of repair (other than motherboard replacement). It can be done, but most places do not have the specialized equipment to diagnose and repair.

I would like to suggest you to visit the authorised Lenovo service centre for the hardware assistance.

https://support.lenovo.com/in/en/contactus/findaprovider

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Best Regards,

Poojitha.
