Bad GPU? Freezing, black screen, and graphic artifacts.

Q: Bad GPU? Freezing, black screen, and graphic artifacts.

Recently my hp pavilion dm4 with switchable radeon 5000 series gpu has started acting funny.

It started months ago with poor performance in streaming videos online when the radeon was activated (dubbed "hi performance" in the OS.) This problem seemed to get better after reinstalling Windows back in March or April and using canned air to clean the innards of dust.

However, about a week ago while playing a game, the screen froze up and the computer rebooted. Upon restart, I got a message saying the video driver had crashed and was incompatible with the catalyst control center (not exactly sure what that is, but I installed several different driver versions to no avail.)
The computer continues crashing in this way, and often will show bars or a checker pattern on the screen before freezing. To make matters worse, a good percentage of the time, the screen will remain black upon startup. I've tried reinstalling the OS, and thankfully was able to boot in safe mode and back up all of the files I needed. I'm tempted to rule out malware as a cause due to the fact that the problem persists after reinstalling Windows.

I have used canned air to blow out all the fans, and have kept up with that habit pretty well since I started experiencing the slowness in video playback. I have not noticed any extreme overheating since I amended the initial problem earlier this year.

I'm ready to spend a small amount on fixing this, but I'm also pretty ready to upgrade to a MacBook Pro or iMac since I have started using Photoshop and a drawing tablet to illustrate digitally. I wanted to get a good background knowledge on what to expect before I bring it in to get an official diagnosis. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Bad GPU? Freezing, black screen, and graphic artifacts.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Bad GPU? Freezing, black screen, and graphic artifacts.

Since you have done a (clean?) install of W7, that eliminates a lot of common problems. You can certainly stop thinking about viruses.

I have a couple of questions:
Where did you get the video driver(s) for the laptop when you did the reinstall? From the HP website only, or did you use the driver package from ATI? In the early days of dual graphics, the driver package was for both graphics chips and available only from the laptop manufacturer. Using the package from ATI would cause problems.
What happens if you disable the Hi-Performance graphics (in Device Manager)? Yes, your video performance will drop, but does that make the artifacts and freezing stop? This test is to try and isolate the problem graphics chip.
Does this behavior happen only on battery, or when the battery and power supply are both connected? What happens if you run on the power supply only and remove the battery completely?

Hello guys,

I have owned Battlefield 2 for some time, and played it on my old rig, which wasnt very powerful, um Pentium III I think it was. It was slow, and the graphics werent great, along with plenty of lag. However I could still play matches. Anyway recently I decided to upgrade my computer, with the following spec:

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 @3.00GHz
Windows XP Home Edition 32-bit SP3
2x Corsair 2GB DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Memory CL5 1.8V

Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATAII 7200RPM 16MB Cache - OEM Caviar Blue
LiteOn IHAS324 24x DVD?RW Dual Layer & RAM SATA Black
Samsung SP0802N/ SCSI Disk Device
ST316021 2A SCSI Disk Device

These parts are all brand new save the hard discs and operating system disc.

I built this machine myself, in order to play relatively old games like Battlefield 2, Battlefield Vietnam and Battlefield 1942, and 2142 in the near future. When I installed all of these, and played Battlefield 2 for the first time, I managed to load a single player game, and select my kit, but after 10-30 seconds of gameplay, the graphics started messing up, and become what I assume to be "graphic artifacts". The colours go crazy, and then the game freezes, sound loops after 5 more seconds, and then the screen goes half b... Read more

so I think I may have picked up a virus, not exactly sure, just a gut feeling.

Basically, I left my computer on and left my home at about 6PM today, got back around 12am after getting stuck in this horrible snow storm, come back to find a bunch of weird grid like dotted patterns on my screen. I run dual monitors and the problem exist on both monitors. I took a screenshot with print screen because I am sure it will show up in the screenshot since it doesn't show up at boot up, at the login screen, or even when I CTRL+alt+delete to get to the vista options that offer lock, logout, shutdown, task manager, for some reason that screen displays perfectly fine.

I am not sure what the deal is. I ran a scan with trend micro which found some threats and removed, one of them that stood out to me was "pe_patched_msc_ in explorer.exe which could not be removed. I believe this is the cause since it only seems to affect the explorer (main screen), and I have no problems during boot up or using the screen CTRL+alt+del brings up.

OS: Windows Vista

Any ideas?

Much appreciated,

My Asus G73-JH laptop is currently freezing at the Windows Starting screen. I've read a lot of other forum posts that feature the same problem, BUT there is artifacting (bunch of colored dots) on the top of this screen that goes across the "Starting Windows" screen in a sort of horizontal line. Sometimes it just goes straight to the "Windows has failed to startup" screen. None of the System Recovery Options from the Startup Tool seem to help fix the problem, they've all been tried. Trying to boot in safe mode doesn't work either, as after it starts to load the files, the artifacting appears on the top again after about the third file and it freezes.

I have not made ANY major changes to anything on the system for over two months prior. Because of the artifacting seen, I imagine the video card is fried or malfunctioning. I called Asus and all they suggested to me so far was to reformat, because apparently they think its a driver issue, but I'd like to consider myself fairly tech savvy and believe that there has got to be a better solution that does not involve reformatting the hard drive, as I had a lot of important data that had been stored and not backed up the previous night before the unexpected freezing.

The only things I seem to have access to is BIOS and the Startup Tool. I have a System Recovery Disc too, and am curious if there is a solution to this problem (I am not well versed in BIOS), and (assuming the video card is shot) if there wou... Read more

I have a Dell Inspiron e1705, with a nVidia video card, a 7800 or 7900 go I think. Yesterday when launching a game, the computer locked up, and when trying to restart, the screen stayed black. Today, I tried booting up again, it seemed to work fine, so I tried the game again, this time I saw some artifacts in the form of small colored squiggly lines, and again it locked up. The computer then gave some more black screen, but a little while later it's willing to start again. This time I get the same artifacts in Firefox, followed very shortly by another lock up.

Now it won't start up, most of the time the screen's back light will not come on, but it did come on once. The time the back light came on it also booted far enough for me to hear the windows start up sound, but the sound skipped a bit, and at no time did anything appear on the screen. I've tried using an external monitor, but nothing there either (though I am not sure how to set it up without being able to see my screen, I did try Fn+F8). The time it booted with only the back light on, both fans did kick on.

Any ideas? I'm new to laptop troubleshooting, but maybe the video card has gone out?

A:Artifacts and lock up followed by black screen

The big problem with a laptop with a high end gfx card is heat. Even with the GS, which is a mobile version of the 7900, it still gets toasty. There really could several things that went out. Overheating could of ended the life of the GPU. You could also have a problem with the actual physical connection to the screen.

I am not familiar with dell laptops and if they use MXM cards or not. But I'm almost sure they do not. MXM is a format that has been kind of accepted that allow you to actually take out a mobile GPU and replace it. If the laptop does not support MXM, and the GPU is indeed what failed, you are in a bit of a hard place.

Did you try to overclock the card?

Hi, for about a year now I've been having the same problem, which is mainly when I play games I get flickery textures and coloured dots appearing on the screen, then getting worse and ultimatley crashing my computer.

Recently however, I have been getting various similar problems on my desktop aswell. Coloured dots appear sometimes when I move windows around the screen, and sometimes when I do this the monitor blacks out and shakes for a second (as if I had pressed the degauss button). Programs like media player with visualisations or effects tend to produce more artifacts.

Also, occasionally, in my web browser, and other programmes with text (this includes menus in my games etc) the text gets distorted, however, if i highlight the text, the distortion goes away. The first artifacts that I notice in games are usually corrupt text graphics.

Recently, the artifacts were getting so bad that I could barely use my computer. However, I decided to switch the ram into different slots and this seemed to eliminate the artifacts. After a while though, they returned.

Here are my specs:
inno3d Nvidia 6800 GT 256 mb
AMD athlon xp 2600+
ASUS a7v8x-x mobo
768 mb ddr ram (2 sticks)
audigy 2 zs sound card

I should mention that my card is not overheating (neither is my processor), and that all the correct drivers are installed. I have also formatted several times but the problem persists.

A:Graphic artifacts

Its most likely not enough power going to the card. Try a different power connector to the card from your PSU. Try reseating your vid card.

Download Speedfan or Everest Home, navigate to the sensors page and post us a report on it. Temps, volts etc. Then tell us the model, watt rating and the little chart of the rails etc from the sticker on the side of your PSU.

Do you remember of any enviromental changes? hardware/software or power surges etc? any other info?

Hi, I have EVGA GTX 970 SC for about two weeks and since then I get some graphic glitches. It firstly happen when the game starts to freeze and blackscreens but it fixed it with a clean install of drivers. After that, things go smoothly until I discovered some glitches. It seems like artifacts at first, but I made a topic on EVGA forums and they told me it was game glitches. Regardless, I ran Valley and Heaven Benchmark without any graphic glitches and artifacts. World of Warcraft and Dota didn't seem to have any glitches and artifacts. Only Team Fortress 2 seem to have these glitches. These glitches aren't consisitant and it happens like once and it disapears which makes it hard to reproduce, otherwise the gameplay wasn't affected. In case you didn't know, it ran on stock settings. I underclocked the gpu and I didn't see any glitches until I saw that red flash on the other screenshot where I use paint tool to make a circle out of it. Otherwise, EVGA forums told me that if you didn't see artifacts in heaven nor valley, your card is fine. That doesn't make any sense..of course I ran some memory error test and it shows no errors too. :/ Oh yeah, I almost forgot that my gpu temps are in the 40s-50s. I dunno if the card's faulty or what but I really need your guys your input on this.

A:Graphic Glitches (Artifacts?) on GTX 970

Bump! Surprisingly no replies here. O.o

Anyway, I've been through dozens of stress test including OCCT, MemtestG80, VMT, and EVGA OC Scanner and so far, no errors nor artifacts. I even used the furmark gpu core and memory burner with artifact scanner and didn't see any artifacts.

I honestly don't know why Team Fortress 2 has these small and non reproduced glitches. Was the game was old but was updated more recently, bad engine, drivers or what? It baffles me right out the bat. I hope the new drivers will solve it. Although I don't see anyone with a GTX 970 of any brand have this issue. ><

Is there any possible way about this?

I recently have been suffering from some serious issues causing pretty much any game I play (Call of Duty: WaW, TF2, Titan Quest, [but no crashes in Killing Floor...]) to eventually freeze my PC entirely to the point where I have to hard reboot.

At first I assumed it was my video card. I rolled back my drivers, that didn't work, so I tried installing a different one I had laying around (GeForce 8800 to 9800 GTX+) but the issue continued on. I've since then reinstalled the most recent drivers and un/reinstalled DirectX. It's not an overheating issue as the artifacting happens at reasonable temperatures for the GPU (45-55 celcius)

I also tried system restoring back to a point before the issues started happening, but that didn't fix the issue either.

Running XP SP 3.
2gigs of Kingston RAM.
Intel Core 2 q6600 Quad.
EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+
500w Power Supply

Nothing is or ever has been overclocked.

At this point I'm going to have to assume it's a memory error or that I need to reformat.

Does this seem like a memory error? I can run my PC all day, running non-visually intensive games and it never artifacts or crashes. 30 minutes in Titan Quest or TF2 and it dies.

A:Graphic Artifacts and Hard Crashing

I think you're guess at being the memory is correct, perhaps if you have any pieces of RAM laying about you could try it out, or a friends before forking out cash to buy some more.

At first I thought it could of been a power supply failure, obviously when running games you're components work harder and perhaps a lack of power could of been the problem. However I don't think this is the case considering a 500watt Power Supply seems sufficient for what you're running.

Either way I'm pretty sure the problem is at hardware level and not software.

I was using my computer today as I normally would, and noticed that I started getting white screens when I started games. One time it got so bad I restarted my computer but now I have no hdmi signal to my monitor!

Did my gpu fail? I tried plugging the hdmi cable directly into the motherboard but still got no signal. I even tried a different hdmi cable but it didn't work either. Can't even use my pc now.

I did get a new gpu about 3 weeks ago.

Okay I plugged a different monitor in and the display comes on but windows is stuck in a loop of trying to repair itself after blue-screening half a second. Plugged my old monitor back in and now it works fine again... I'm suspecting my new gpu is what failed. But then again wouldn't it be unable to render anything on screen? Is it the hard drive? The CPU?

A:Sudden graphic artifacts, now unable to start windows

When issues such as artifacting suddenly appear, it usually points to a GPU failure. Something else that comes to mind is a PSU failure since it may not be able to supply enough power to the components, hence causing these issues.

I'm helping my friend with his laptop.
I'm currently trying to install graphic drivers.

The laptop is an ASUS A52J. There's a sticker saying there's an Radeon HD 6370M inside.
I went to Radeon's website and downloaded the latest drivers. When I install them the driver asks me to reboot. After rebooting the screen turns black after the "Starting Windows" screen (just before the login screen.) I hear the sound of being logged in, but I can't see anything.
I am forced to restart Windows in failsafe mode to see anything - then I can uninstall the drivers and run on the "default drivers" that Windows install.

Anyone know how to fix this problem?

Hi all,

Here's the story:
Something went wrong with my good old ATI 7000 64mb video card - one day, when i tried to turn my pc on, my monitor wouldn't show anything, though i know the pc itself was booting. I decided its either video card/mother board problem. Yesterday i got myself a NVIDIA MX 4000 128mb card, so i could test it. I changed the video cards without uninstalling drivers or anything, simply removed the ATI and inserted the NVIDIA one. It worked flawlessly, i installed the latest drivers, rebooted again and was happy with the results.
Now i try to turn my pc on today, and i get the same thingy that i did with the ATI card - black, idle screen, though the pc is booting.
Both cards are AGP. I can turn my pc on if i plug the monitor into the vga slot, not into the video card slot, so maybe there is something i can do? I have high hopes that messing with settings could help me out, like, maybe the AGP card is not enabled, maybe there's something i can do with BIOS...

Don't hesistate to ask anything, bear in mind that i'm no pro at computers though

A:Changed graphic card, black screen

welcome to tech support guy,
you don't have your pc specs on your personal page -OR- in the post where you are asking for help
SO - just 'shooting-in-the-dark' here......
you spoke of an agp slot - means pc is somewhat older - have you ever checked / changed the cmos battery? - [this is what 'holds' the settings in / for the bios]

IF it is somewhat 'discharged' - this would let some of the bios settings be altered / 'forgotten' - which would mean it would most likely skip to the 'default' of the 'on-board' video adapter

boot to the bios and check the setting - if it is NOT set to the agp device then change it to that - and then be sure to change the battery - they're only a couple dollars - most of the mb's since the late '90's use a #cr2032 'coin' type battery

Ok, this is the story:

I recently got problems with my ATI card because after 5-10 minutes of having my computer on, the screen started to jump and it froze, having me to reboot my computer. After that I just disabled the ATI driver (via adapter's propierties), hoping that solved the problem, but it didn't. It works fine for a long time.
Today I upgraded my other PC and got a spare PSU 500W and AMD 7950
So I just replaced the PSU and GPU in my old Inspiron 620
When I turned on this computer, nothing showed up, just pure black screen without signal, and there's no beep on this motherboard, so no alert of course. Then I pushed the power button, it turned off immediately which means it didn't pass POST at all.
Now I'm using it with 500w PSU and GTS 450, works fine.
It's clear that the 500w PSU (12v rail 41A) is enough for this system, both PSU and 7950 works fine in my other PC with a more powerful CPU (TDP 115W).
So I suspect it's the compatible problem between H61 motherboard of 620 and AMD Radeon HD 7950
The BIOS version is A10. It's the newest one released in 2013.
Thanks for your help!

Here is my 'spec' as far as i understand it to be:

ACPi x86-based PC
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU [email protected] 2.4GHz 2.39GHz

4GB RAM(4x1gb) 1GB 2Rx8 PC2 5300U-555-12 667MHz (Two of these are the stock "hynix" brand and two of these are Kingston upgrades that i ordered from dell)
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

The stock components are listed above as you see. The memory was ordered right from dell about 7 months ago and i haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary except in my Computer Properties it shows i have 3069 RAM when i have 4x1GB sticks in it. When i look in Setup from the startup it shows i have 4 sticks and all are at 1GB***This is more of a side problem i think. It has always been like this since i put it in.

Since it was a previous date it seemed like nothing had taken place, no downloads on the desktop.

Ran the otl scan again

adwcleaner again, log looked the same as first time so I deleted all again

Ran combofix and rebooted and it gave me a log

That is where I am stuck, I dont know whether to leave these downloads on the computer, delete them

I dont think that Quads is going to help me anymore since I messed up, so I was wondering if anyone else could help. I just really want to finish what was started. The computer was stuck on the black screen this morning and finally got it restarted after about 5 times. But I do think there is some kind of virus. Still have adwcleaner and combofix downloaded on the computer. Dont know if I should delete them or what.

Hi, I am having several problems with my computer, wondering if I am infected with something? First noticed the computer running slowly. Then began freezing all the time. Then noticed that when I switch to a new internet page at times I notice a small black screen that will pop-up or flash on the page, but only for a second...almost like you'd get on a "run command" type scrren, if that makes sense. Also, I keep getting a security options failure. It seems this only comes after the computer freezes and I try to hit alt, control, delete to bring up task manager. I have tried to run Norton Anti-virus and spybot. I've used CCleaner to remove unnecessary files/clean. The virus software finds nothing unusual (usually some cookies with tracking, but no virus. I 've been having trouble trying to figure out what is going on with my PC.What specific hardware is causing all of this , or if it is more than one even.I could really use the help as I even took it to a tech in town and payed for nothing as he didn't manage to fix it...

Problem: So I have been having BSOD,freezes with no messages at all that need me to reboot, artifacts in and out of game and lastly...various errors in various different games that can range from crashes on mapload with no message at all to game file validation failures.Once I had the VGA "disconnect" for 5 seconds and windows "recovered it".BSOD can happen even while on desktop I think.

Clues: Truth is that I was having BSOD and freezes back in the past with my old GPU (which died on me) as well but I thought it was due to it overheating. Now after the upgrade I did to a new card, I have these issues again but also I have ARTIFACTS and general errors/crashes in most of my games. It seems that some of them might be HDD related.
One more clue is that my HDD also died on me...I thought that is why I was getting BSOD but it didn't stop even now that I am just running my single SSD.

recently the monitor freezes started, then i had a bad memory stick , now every few minutes I get the black screen and the only thing to do is shut off with the main power button. what should I check and where to start, thanks.

A:freezing and then came black screen

This can be caused by a number of things.
The first thing to do is to find out if it is hardware or software related.
The best way to do this is to boot into the bios and leave it there for a bit.
If the problem arises when let in the bios screen then you know it is hardware.

Hello, over the last week to week and a half my computer has been getting worse and worse. I think its triggered by right clicking objects although I dont think thats entirely whats causing the problem. The screen will freeze and then the monitor will turn black and the computer will have to be restarted. The problem can occur as frequently as 3 times in 10 minutes currently. From the last day upon restarting some images have traces of minor pixelation errors, especially the windows icon as the PC is restarting and certain other random/minor images like above my back/forward, refresh and stop bottons in IE appear pixelated. As I'm posting this the problem occured and the screen went to a blue screen and mentioned something of proceeding with a physical memory dump and i restarted right away. I have avast running with script blocker(although turned it off for the DDS) so I dont know what may have pentrated the PC to cause this if it malicious. I'm running a Dell 4600 with windows xp. Before this happened, I could put my computer on sleep without any problems. Now, when I put it on sleep, I turn it on, the screen freezes. I shut it down, start it again, and then the Loading Windows freezes. Another problem is a small one I felt like adding, is that the Windows 7 screen where it is loading up your computer, doesn't show for me. This is not a problem where other users could not log on. All mine does is have a black screen, then loads to my desktop. So it works fine, just that the screen doesn't show. Please help.

So whenever I start up my hp pavilion g6 the screen stays black and I get the blink code on the caps lock key, I have researched this and found out that it was either a board system failure or a cpu not functional.  I have reseated my memory modules to see if that would work, it didnt. I have tried starting up from bios menu and running the memory and hard drive test,  but everytime this happens my computer freezes and I have to restart because it never unfreezes. This happens every single time I try to launch in safe mode or repair mode and I cant do anything about it. I have attempted to system restore off of repair mode but everytime I get close to it an error pops up asking to disable drivers and how it has been canceled to prevent damage to my computer. I cannot do anything about fixing the first problem because the freezing problem doesnt allow me. I have also tried running the diagnostics off of the bios but again the freezing thing stops it. Someone please help

Hello all - just joined the forum and added some system info to my profile.

Story so far:

All seemed well until trying to render video projects using Pinnacle Studio 11.1, when I would get random freezes or black screens with the pc being unresponsive, requiring power down (5 seconds holding the button) or reset.

After some time on Studio related forums I bought more RAM recommended from Crucial. No difference. I bought a new video card. No difference.

I defragged, updated drivers, updated bios. no difference.

I then started experimenting with Prime95 torture test, Memtest86+, PassMark's Burn-In Test and Windows Memory Diagnostic with the following results:

Memtest86+ completed one pass ok. Have not yet left it running for longer.

Prime95 runs overnight with no errors when testing large FFT's so far. It produces the black screen crash overnight on small FFT testing but was running ok for over 2 hours to start with.

PassMark Burn-In shareware only runs for 15mins before stopping. Occasionally this crashes or freezes.

WMD always fails on the Stride6 test. If I vary the RAM (original 512MB, new 1GB, or total 1.5GB) it will fail at diffent points during Stride6. Only once did it complete Stride6 (when running with 512MB RAM) but then failed on the 2nd pass. Reading other forums on Stride6 failures makes me think it could be a PSU, CPU or mobo issue.

Took the case off my PSU last night and noticed some corrosion and leakage from a capacitor. Bought and installe... Read more

My laptop (Asus A52F) starting acting up about a week ago. It seems to be seizing and then black-screening if I have it do anything more than one small task. For example it often freezes up during scans, when I plug in a hard drive or if I try to download absolutely anything and then I have to force shut down by holding the power button.
I've tried running a few different virus/malware scans (Super Anti Spyware, Ad-aware and Malware Bytes) and they found a couple little things but the compuet has still been acting up.
I've tried keeping an eye on the task manager while trying anything that usually freezes the computer and I'm seeing any jumps in the CPU. I've attempted to do a system restore as well but there is no restore point to use.
If anyone has any ideas I'd be very thankful.

Hello there,i really need you help !

So i bought a new graphics card, the Radeon R9 290 and i have the following problems

1)When i post up the pc instead of the BIOS image i am getting those random artifacts

2) In random times my monitor freezes with a buzzing sound coming from speakers and it wont respond until i force restart. This might happen once a day, twice a day,10 times a day or it might not happen for 2 days.It mostly happens when i am gaming or watching movie, but it also happens when i am just browsing.

I have ruled out the RAMs cause i tested them a lot,and i have also ruled out anything else related to hardware because when i am running with my old graphics card the computer runs fine without any problems.

So i decided to RMA the card. They called me after two days and asked me to go there,so i went. They told me that the card runs fine, there was no artifacts in post and no freezing when they tested 4 different benchmarks and 2 different games. So they gave me back the card.He told me that the problem could be my PSU or that i run the card with VGA to HDMI adapter(Analog to Digital).

So i really don't know what to do now, what would cause this problem ? Is it possible that cause my monitor does not have Digital input(HDMI,DVI)so i have to use VGA To HDMI adapter this could be the problem ? Or it's simply my PSU ? But if it's my PSU shouldn't i also have random restarts and other problems too ? I am really in a dead end.

Firstly, I am a bit of a computerphobe, and will be lost on any major technical terms, so please bear with me...

I have a samsung R700 laptop, which decided this morning to die.

I had downloaded some films last night (which I have done many times with no problems previously), switched off the laptop (which rarely do - prefering instead to hibernate.)

When I switched it back on this morning, windows was carrying out about a million updates.

After around 10 minutes, the screen came on, and everything looked normal. I tried to open a document, but the laptop screen froze, and although the curser was there and moving, I was unable to close or open any other pages/applications.

After restarting a few times and having the same thing happen, I started in safemode, restored it back to last month, and tried again. In safemode I can scan (have used 3 virus scanners which have been reccomended) but all results are clear. I can access the internet and all of my documents.

Restarted the machine after an hour switched off, and when booting up in normal mode, the home screen is just black. There is a white cursor which moves, but no taskbar or icons etc. Safe mode is still functional.

Any advice would be greatly received
Thanks in advance

Hi there. Recently my computer has been crashing an awful lot. I am just doing a task and, usually if it does, it will cut to black. The computer doesn't make any noise and I have to restart it. Sometimes it will freeze on the screen, once it actually cut to a completely white screen.

I always thought this was because I was using Google Chrome, it always seemed to be whilst that was loaded. However now its happening without that. Also, Firefox has become completely disabled, I click on the icon and nothing happens.

So, I have no idea why this is happening! It's very worrying as I am starting a new year at college next week. I have run several anti-virus checks, SpyBot checks, that sort of thing.

Please help! You might just save my life :/

I'm using an HP ENVY TS 17-J130US NB PC on Windows 10 and have been experiencing this issue for the last several weeks.

I believe this occurred after one of the windows updates and the computer didn't shut down correctly. The next time I booted up the system, it basically froze. I've tried updating my graphics driver but am still experiencing these issues.

From time to time the system will freeze although I've been able to use it. But recently when it's about to freeze, my google chrome pages start to not load and my task bar reacts very slowly (opening task manager requires a lot of patience).

I'm not really sure where to start (originally, I thought it was an application like Skype because everytime I opened skype, it would freeze. I've uninstalled skype but still experience these issues).

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

My PC: ASUS P4 2.67G with 1G RAM. nVidia FX5200 AGP graphics card. Compro TV Tuner Card. XP Pro SP2.

Last Wednesday i installed a new TV Tuner Card. System was fine til about 3 days ago.

The problem:

The other day i was working on my PC and started smelling a mild electrical burning smell. The smell faded before i could figure out what it is, but came back again about 10 minutes later, followed closely by my system freezing and my monitor going black. I had to pull the power cord out the back of the system to turn it off.

After a few minutes i turned it back on again, and it appeared to boot fine. About 5 minutes after using it, the same thing happened again and the screen went black.

At this point, i figured the problem was most probably my AGP Card, so i got the case apart and took it out. After changing my monitor back to the on-board graphics (SiS chipset) the system appeared to boot fine again.

I used it for probably 10hrs of use after this and was thinking the problem was solved until this morning when i smelt that burning smell again, followed by the entire system freezing up. This time though, the screen did NOT go black, so i assume the onboard graphics are ok still.

At this point today i removed the TV Tuner card, rebooted and it loaded fine. I've not used it much this this happened.

I'm not sure what actually caused these problems, or if they are more serious than they appear.

Hi guys,

I have just installed Windows 7 and I'm having some major trouble with my graphics card. I had Vista installed, and just got my laptop from back from Dell after some repairs for faulty motherboard/GPU. I have wiped my hard drive and started fresh by installing Windows 7 Build 7100. All seemed good when I first opened it up, everything was nice but I noticed I only had Vista Basic color scheme. I had a look in device manager and under display adaptor it had Standard VGA adaptor listed.

I then installed my nVidia driver number 185.85 and upon restart I got a black screen after welcome screen. I then rebooted and all seemed fine. After around 15-20 seconds of use windows would lock up for a minute or so, then flash a BSOD and then reboot. I figured it was a driver issue, so I jumped on and downloaded the latest driver for my graphics card (GeForce 8400M GS) which was 186.03. This had the exact same result. Random shutdowns and failing to boot, alot of freezing when I could boot.

I have found if I go into device manager and disable it, I can run windows 7 fine but can't use screen savers or basically anything that needs graphics. Any help would be great as I woul love to keep using Windows 7. Cheers guys.
