(2.4 Ghz i3) to (1.8 Ghz i5) Increase or decrease in perf?

Q: (2.4 Ghz i3) to (1.8 Ghz i5) Increase or decrease in perf?

As the title states. I'm planning on trading my dad laptops. I do audio production and gaming. I have an i3 and the cpu is clocked at 2.4 ghz and he has an i5 clocked at 1.8. How much of a difference will this impact performance? For better or worse?

Im curious because I had a desktop a while back and it had a Core 2 Duo @ 2.8 and I went to this i3 @2.4 laptop and the cpu sucks in comparison to the desktop...I was originally thinking the i3 would be a increase since it was newer architecture.

I would still think on the graphics side its definitely an upgrade because the i3 uses Intel HD Graphics and it sucks...it doesnt even use opengl. The other uses a Nvidia GeForce GT 740M.

Preferred Solution: (2.4 Ghz i3) to (1.8 Ghz i5) Increase or decrease in perf?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: (2.4 Ghz i3) to (1.8 Ghz i5) Increase or decrease in perf?

The difference between the desktop and laptop is multifaceted. Desktop probably had faster hard drive, dedicated video, and optimized for performance versus laptop optimized for battery life.

And the core i3/5/7 each do graphics onboard. The slower the cpu, the more impact the graphics will have on overall performance. Core i3 are budget machines, for basic tasks. They are not really suitable for gaming or video and music production. The core i5 will suit better in these areas.

Can you please tell me how to increase and decrease a preset internal hard drive with programs already installed in the set C: drive location and move it so I can install new programs in without affecting the opening of the program?

What I am trying to say is , Example When I installed window 7 long time ago on my computer. I have only one internal a 120GB HD on the C: drive. That was example set partition 80 for C; and created D: drive 40 GB from the original one drive. I installed programs in before that is now filled up almost all of drive C: 80GB partitioned. If I move (some) of the preinstalled program to D: drive will the moved programs stop working? Some program demand to be installed to only C: or it will not install at all.

Alright, so this is about a sound problem, but my tests make me think it's something to do with Windows 7. Here's the issue :

I have a SteelSeries Merc Stealth keyboard with buttons for increasing and decreasing volume. The decreasing volume works, but the increasing does not. So, if I want to increase the volume (in a game, for instance), I would have to alt-tab. I thought this was because my keyboard was somehow broken and that particular button didn't work anymore.

However, I just received a brand new pair of Corsair HS1 headphone. On the cable of the headphones are buttons to increase and decrease the volume of Windows. So, as you may guess, the decreasing button works, but not the increasing one.

Since the probably of having two defective items, one being new for the exact same problem being so slim, my guess is that something in Windows 7 is off. So, can anyone help?

Here's my specs :
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
Intel i7 Quad Core @2.67GHz
Corsair TX750 750W PSU
Corsair Vengeance 3x4BG CL9-9-9
Gigabyte Radeon HD 6870
Corsair Vengeance 12GB 3x4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Triple Channel
Windows 7 64-bits w/ Service pack 1

A:Can decrease volume, but can't increase

Just to specify as a proof the buttons work, when I use a program that enable Global keys like Winamp, the volume of that program will increase or decrease. It's the Windows volume that doesn't increase.

Sorry for the bad explication.

My issue is that when I am upstairs windows 7 says there is 5/5 bars as connection (same as downstairs)
But when I am upstairs I am lucky to reach 2mb/s
Downstairs I get 10mb/s(normal for me)

Could this be a driver issue?

A:A big decrease increase internet speed,

Could be a driver issue, a signal noise issue (even if you are getting 5 bars) or could be your upstairs PC is using the G band when the downstairs is using N band.

Good day!  I am an IT Systems Support Engineer and give support mostly to business clients, but also to some residential clients.  Due to the recent growth of Windows 10 upgrades, I'm curious if anyone has noticed an increase or decrease with questions about Windows 10.  I throw in decreasing, since I've been asked quite a bit about Win 10.
I am new to posting on this site, but I've used this site before, when I came across something that I hadn't seen before.  I really enjoy this site and when it helped me with an issue, I always put this site as a resource.
Thanks for reading and I am eager to know anybody's thoughts about the topic title.

A:Will Windows 10 increase or decrease support questions?

I haven't installed Win 10 yet...but I have seen the introduction of every Windows system since Win 95 and it occurs to me that what is currently reflected is the same amount (or even more) of puzzlement, rhetoric, and uncertainty...that comes with every version of Windows...until the first SP is issued.  Once that occurs, users seem to settle down and have become more familiar with what are imagined problematical situaitons, as opposed to real problems where they need/want assistance with specific types of system situations.

Hi, I just bought a new computer with Windows 7 and a 1 TB hard drive. Windows 7 recycle bin came configured with about 40 GB of space allotted to it. I want to decrease its capacity (down to about 10 GB) in order to increase the available space on my hard drive. However, when I decreased the recycle bin size, there was no apparent change when I left double-clicked on My Computer and it showed the amount of free space on my c: drive. Here's my question: how can I decrease the recycle bin and have this extra space show up on my c: drive as available storage space?

I just got a Lenovo Z460 running on windows7.
By default, the harddisk is split into c:\ and d:\

I want to decrease the disk space of c drive and then use this additional space to increase the disk space of d drive (the logical drive)

To decrease the disk space in c drive, I go to computer management/storage/disk management and then at the c drive, I right click the mouse and then choose "shrink volumn". I successfully shrinked c drive and now I got an unallocated space but how do I allocate this new space to d drive. The "extend volume" in d drive is greyed.

A:Solved: how to decrease and increase disk space

The windows partitioning tool is somewhat limited in that it will only extend a partition to the right, so you're going to need an additional tool.

I personally use a Live Linux CD with an included partitioning program, usually GPartEd. If you're not familiar or comfortable with Linux then someone else will have to recommend another tool.

Keep in mind, whatever tool you use will take quite awhile to extend that partition because it not only extends the partition but also moves all the data to the beginning of the newly extended partition. It looks like you've got about 10-11 Gigs of data on there so it can take possibly half an hour or more.

A somewhat convoluted solution possible with the windows partition tool would be:

1) Create a new partition with the unallocated space. Let's call it F drive.

2) Copy/paste all the data from the D drive into the new F drive.

3) Delete the D drive.

4) Extend the F drive to include the now unallocated space on the right of the new F drive.

5) Rename F drive to whatever you want.

I have installed Win7 build 7000 thrice,

twice with virtualPC on my main PC (dual core 2.61 GHz, 2Gb RAM)
and one on an old-ish laptop (1.73 Ghz, 1.5GB RAM)

Each time it has been PAINFULLY slow, booting up seems quick enough but general performance is horrible. Both these machines run Vista screaming fast so I'd assume they are upto the challenge, I've tried disabling all the visuals just incase that's the issue but no luck. What's going on?

Any help is appreciated, thanks ^_^

A:Please help me understand a perf issue

I understand you're having problems with the performance of Windows 7 on both a desktop PC as well as a laptop.

Your specifications seem to be more than accommodating for running Se7en on the desktop PC, but I can't speak for the laptop.

You say that bootup seems quick, but 'general performance' is not up to par - and that both machines run Vista just fine. So, is there anything different between the setups?

Have you tried to install Windows 7 on a clean HDD from a fresh format? If not, that would be my first route - at least you can narrow down any performance issues to the OS or the actual install this way.

Just out of curiosity, do both machines even support Aero? (you failed to tell us what GPU either machine is running)

While disabling visual effects should increase performance a bit, there are many, many other things to troubleshoot before giving up on Windows 7.

I would start by installing Windows 7 on a clean, formatted HDD directly from a disk or USB stick to eliminate anything that the virtualPC may be doing to it. Following that up, I would check that all your motherboard's chipset, GPU and SATA/IDE drivers are updated via Windows Update or better yet, directly from the manufacturer's websites.

In my opinion, Windows 7 is much faster than Vista just for the simple fact that a dozen or more services don't automagically run like they did in Vista, let alone the fact that most services are set on Manual rather than Auto now, so I doubt highly that it's anyth... Read more

To remove the read only attribute on a file just find the file in Windows Explorer and right-click the filename. Select Properties from the drop-down list. At the bottom of the properties screen you can enable or disable the attributes.

Making a file read only normally does not prevent printing. What happens when you try to print?

My computer is acting sad! It used to be much better...

Flash games are choppy.
Yahoo messenger can't keep up with my typing.

New hardware option is best.

Check to see if it has an AGP slot. You can place a really fine card in there if so. The HD 3850 like mine, or even 4xxx series of card.
HIS HD 3850 (mine) is perhaps better than 4xxx AGP releases.

This card requires an empty slot next to AGP so you'll have to have room there. It's known as dual slot type card.

I have been getting some errors in Windows 8.1 preinstalled on my laptop (HP 15 Notebook - t063tu model) which is just about 1.5 yrs old. Seems the internal hard drive is going to fail soon, and I am advised by my IT Admin that I should buy a new hard drive asap to replace the defective one.

While checking on some forums and some people have suggested that SSDs boost system performance a lot more compared to regular hard drives. But SSDs cost almost thrice as much - for the same capacity - 500Gb. So, would like to know if it's really worth investing in a new SSD instead of a standard laptop hard drive, and what would be the life of an SSD compared to a regular hard drive.

I understand that SSDs consume less power, and boot up the system much faster, but are they suitable for all-day computing, as I use my laptop for 10+ hours daily ?

Would be grateful if I get expert advise on this. Thanks.

Have even tried to delete via PowerDesk5, but have the same problem. Program "attempts" to delete, but file won't delete from folder.
Note: I have some "history" entries I would like to save, if possible (to go back to). Would prefer not to delete my entire "history", if possible.

2. The 2nd problem I have is extremely poor surfing performance (and premature web 'disconnect') which acts like a memory/buffer problem.

In the past few weeks, I can only surf to perhaps ~10 sites, before IE stops "connectin... Read more

I just got my new PC which has 2 1gb ram chips that were installed in the 1 and 3 slots (out of 4 slots). If I take my two 256mb chips from my old PC (same ram speed, better ram, too) and jam them in the other two slots, will that increase performance or hinder the performance of the two larger chips?

Maybe I'm crazy...
Thanks, Ryan

A:Solved: 2 1gb ram chip + 2 256mb ram chips = better perf.?

Hello, recently I've had terribly slow performance, popups & freezing while browsing the web; and now Windows takes forever to load when I turn the system on. As you can probably tell by my logs I've tried every anti-spyware, anti-malware, anti-trojan program I can think of, and every time I run them (which takes forever) they find something, usually Virtumonde...but they can never clean it out. Some programs just hang while on the cleaning phase (e.g. AVG) and others tell me to restart the system to finish cleaning...but once I do the problems persist. Thanks so much in advance for any help.

A:Infected with Virtumonde?? Popups and slow perf

Hello penelopet,I (as well as MicroSoft, McAfee and Symantec) recommend that you DO NOT have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time. Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove one of these. AVG Anti-Virus or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. **********************Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.Please post the contents of that document. **********************Note: If you already have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then update, run it, then do a "Perform Full Scan"Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:http://d... Dear all,

I have a Dell Precision laptop (M4800) with 16 GB RAM and a big SSD.

I have been struggling for ages with this bleeping w10 and have got to a stage where it does actually run very well ... if the comp is using a docking port and external monitor (in this case a Dell U3011, 30-inch).

But when I run the laptop using the laptop screen (no port, no external monitor) it is laggy... it takes an appreciable time for Windows Explorer to come up when I got Win+E, and when it does I actually see the screen components being painted; various other hotkeys are slow too (seconds to display the window).

I assumed this might have something to do with the resolution settings... but nothing changes it.

My graphics card is an NVidia Quadro K2100M...

Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to tenforums!

Do you have any other peripherals attached to docking port? USB drives or network connection?

I would check two things at first: remove any links to files or folders in Quick Access in Explorer window, that can be removed or dead, secondly check shell extensions.
You can try shell extension viewer and remove them one by one. There are some threads on this forum already. Nvidia shell extension is known to cause some problems.

The Diagnostics-Performance log is simply telling you the amount of time that it took to resume from standby here. The "warnings" are not warnings or errors at all.

Hi folks!

I have a Intel Quad Q9550 running at 2.83 ghz with Vista 64 bit. My video card is an ATI 4870.

I upgraded the PhysX drivers up to 80818.

I run 3dMark Vantage.

With card turned off:

Total score: 9100
CPU score: 8256
GPU score: 8526

With card turned on:

Total Score: 9400
CPU score: 11149
GPU score: 8526
Is that *all* the performance increase I should expect to see? Doesn't seem worth it....

Thanks for any info.

My wife is seeing oddball behavior on her laptop. It's running slooooooooow - tho neither Norton nor my basic malware catcher, SpyBot, are catching anything.

The real weird sympton: temp copies of Word files (she's a writer) are popping up seemingly at random.

Here's the HJT log. I'm not seeing anything - but then again, I'm an idiot.

Guidance, oh wizards?
