Accessing BIOS With a Broken Laptop Screen

Q: Accessing BIOS With a Broken Laptop Screen

G'day guys!

I just downloaded that game " We Happy Few" which requires 512MB of dedicated video RAM?
I saw a video on how to increase that, but as mentioned in the title, my laptop screen is broken and I'm only using this laptop with a 42 inch LCD connected by a VGA cord.

How can I change my dedicated video ram without resetting the computer, or at least maintaining the second screen during a restart?

Preferred Solution: Accessing BIOS With a Broken Laptop Screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi I have a three year old i5 64 bit z580 running windows 10. The fan seems to have stopped working and the laptop overheating. When I run the dust removal the fan still does not work. I have inspected it and can spin it mannually and it isnt dirty. It doesnt spin at all though not even on boot up - i have turned it on with the bottom cover off so definitely not spinning. I have run Speedfan which doesnt show any info on the fan and Im not getting any error messages so I decided to look at bios and see if I could see any issue. However this doesnt seem possible. The onekey facility wont work while running or from boot up even after removing battery and holding in the power button. None of the function keys access it. The settings, recovery etc way into the uefi bios settings will reboot then offer to access bios before booting as normal. I have tried all this with the quick boot options turned off too.

Hi there!

My Wife recently broke her laptop screen and not wanting to replace it as she wanted a new laptop, I'm selling it.

The laptop works fine under Vista, connected to my little LCD TV using the VGA out, however I want to sell the laptop factory restored and then free space 7 pass - wipe the HDD.

My problem is that if I try to restore the laptop using the HP software, which restarts the laptop to dos, I get no VGA out. I only get VGA out when Vista loads, thus preventing me seeing anything of the BIOS screens or command prompts/restore software's input fields under Restore, so basically I cannot actually use restore, and cannot access BIOS to perhaps force the VGA out if at all possible.

I feel this is a chicken and egg situation and don't have any knowledge of how to circumvent this if it is at all possible.

I would be sooooo grateful if someone knows what, if anything, can be done to force the VGA out perhaps using windows before hitting restore which would shut down the laptop and reboot with VGA output thus allowing me to see what I'm doing on the TV whilst carrying out the reset. I could always use the HP forums and tech support too I guess!

The laptop is a HP 6720s running Vista Home Basic. Sorry, but I'm not sure of the BIOS version!
Many thanks,

Stu.

I recently purchased an Asus N56VJDH71 laptop. The laptop came preinstalled with the abomination known as Windows 8. I am trying to change the boot order so the laptop will boot from my Windows 7 disk. To do this I need to access BIOS. I have tried most of the standard key combinations, F1, F2, F8, F12, Insert, Delete, but I cannot seem to access BIOS.

I even contact Asus Tech support by phone but their representatives are a special kind of useless. They would not provide me a straight answer to this question. Does anyone else have Asus laptops? Do they know how to access BIOS.

Update: I have half solved this problem. There is a rather convoluted procedure listed here http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/709605-need-help-asus-n56vz-rh71-cant-enter-bios.html that enables me to access BIOS. Still, this is something I should be able to access upon booting, I should not be going through the operating system just to access BIOS. If something ever went seriously wrong with my computer, I may never be able to fix it if the only way to access BIOS is listed above.

Hello rs2ooo16valve

Have you tried removing the CMOS battery and then clearing CMOS with the
jumper set to clear for about 30 seconds, and then put it back the way it
was?

Clearing the CMOS can be done a few ways. The most common way is to use the jumper on the motherboard. This jumper has two settings. Normal and Clear. Moving the jumper to the Clear setting will erase the settings stored in CMOS. It does not remove the BIOS itself, only the user defined settings within the CMOS. When you clear the CMOS you will most likely see the error message "CMOS Checksum Error" on the next reboot. You can enter the BIOS setup at this point or before and reconfigure the settings.

Another method is to remove the CMOS battery from the system. Removing the battery is usually the second method as it may take anywhere from 15 minutes to 8 hours in order for the CMOS to loss the settings. Once the CMOS is clear, you should know by the "BIOS checksum error, press F1 to continue ", or "CMOS Checksum Error - Defaults Loaded" message at bootup.

You may also be able to clear the CMOS in some cases by forcing a system configuration change. Changing hardware, such as adding or removing a few SIMM's may cause a CMOS error and allow you to proceed to the BIOS setup.

On a few systems it may be possible to clear the CMOS by pressing the Ins key during the power up of the system. Holding the Key down may clear the CMOS and restore the defaults. This may or m... Read more

Hello...

asus g53jw laptop, fairly heavy duty laptop (8gb ram, i7, gtx 460m etc) until about 2-3 years ago, still works fine mostly until a few days ago, out of warranty now obviously.
The built-in keyboard packed in about a year ago, due to me tinkering about cleaning gpu fan and i damaged the keyboard interface on motherboard, anyway got a work around solution by using wireless usb keyboard.

so, until a few days ago all was fine, but now internal hard drive seems to have boot issues and i think i can replace it easily enough, however the logitech usb wireless keyboard does not let me get into bios to reinstall windows on new hard drive. i also tried a sharkoon skiller wired usb keyboard, but that does not work at start with del/f10 either.
Anybody know of a keyboard solution that may work?
So, any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Hi,

A disclaimer before I proceed. Im not the best with computers or computer terms.
I have a Samsung laptop (not sure of the model), and the screen broke months ago. Since then I've been using an external monitor without any issues until today. When I start up my laptop I can never see anything displayed on the external monitor until the log in screen. The monitor will always go into hibernation mode until the log in screen.

However, today it's taking longer to start up and I cant see what's going on. At first I thought windows was performing a disk scan but i waited over an hour! So that must not be the issue. I want to find a way to display what is happening on the external monitor if possible. I have been endlessly searching all day online for help. I would really appreciate any help/advice.

Thank you!

I used a Samsung NP300E5A-A02UB laptop for over a year through an external monitor, ever since the screen broke on it. Never had any problems with it besides that. Until one day I, not thinking about it, shut down my PC through holding down the power button, because it was being too slow, couldn't even shut it down normally. But little did I know, doing that would make sure I can't use it again, as far as I can tell. Because I shut it down using the power button, I'm assuming the screen came up, the one either to repair or tell me the pc shut down incorrectly, or bios, or whatever it is. But since my external monitor doesn't turn on until after my pc is signing in, it won't turn on. Normally it would just kick on automatically when signing in. So I'm completely blind to what I'm doing and can't get my monitor on. Literally all I need is a sneak peak at it to get it to turn on all the way, but I don't know how. I've tried a few things already, that I've found online, but never though to ask about it til now.

I've tried doing the little closing and then quickly opening up the laptop screen to fool the pc into turning it on.

I've tried manually unplugging my screen, in hopes it would use my external as a primary instead.

I've pressed the appropriate F key, or combination keys to turn it on.

Possibly other things, but I forget, it's been a little while.

All of these with no luck.

You have two or more girlfriends and they shared a laptop and the only thing broken is the screen? Amazing!

If it was setup to allow Window's Remote Desktop or some similar third party remote access, you can use that. Otherwise, I think repairs or another laptop are called for.

We had finally gotten a computer (laptop) last week (which husband had to fix first ) to be able to do some work for someone. Just got it up & running 2days ago and while at a friend's, someone stood it up next to a chair, and it fell over & actually broke the screen (looks kinda like you swiped the screen with a few different colored paintbrushes)! Due to a wildfire in August, we are very short on money so we will probably have to try to find a screen on craigslist or something. My question is Is there ANY other models that are apt to have the same screen or that can be easily used? If so, which ones are apt to be compatible or, if you don't know, how can I find out???
HP 2000-239dx
Thank you very much for any/all help!

P. S. Hopefully this was the best subforum to put this in. If not, either let me know or feel free to move it for me. Thanks

A:Broken Laptop Screen

A Google search for 2000-239dx LCD will turn up a number of pages of companies selling the screens and also people selling them on e-Bay. You could choose to buy from one of those sources. Some of the found pages may list other HP models that use the same screen.

Afternoon All,

My brother in law dropped his laptop, which has resulted in a cracked screen and damaged plastics. Having replaced a screen before I ordered a new one, and have fit it, but alas no joy.

Before I go and pull the laptop to pieces I thought it would be a good idea to ask for some advice. Here are a few key points;

1. The replacement screen is brand new, and has had all its wires connected. There is no display on the screen. There was no display on the old damaged on either, I though the fall had damaged it completely.

2. The rest of the laptop works fine, I have hooked it up to a screen via the VGA output, and everything works fine.

3. When I right click and select properties>settings , it only displays the external monitor, no mention of the LCD.

So what do you suggest? I was thinking about pulling it apart and seeing if the LCD cable was still attached at the "other end", any thoughts?

Thanks,

James

IMO Windows is huge pain when dealing with more than 2 screens. At work I have 3 screens and occasionally when I take out my laptop from docking station, it messes up the settings. Takes 5-10 minutes get it back to my original.

But that is not my question. At home I have a cracked laptop screen that no longer works. I have connect this laptop to my tv and am trying to use it as a htpc. My issue is I have not been able to find settings that disable the laptop screen, and for windows to ONLY use my tv as primary screen. The reason I need to disable the laptop screen is that when I have my laptop open (I need this to use the keyboard/mouse of the laptop), the tv screen is OFF (windows is thinking I'm using the laptop screen that is dead). Essentially I'm in a situation in which if I want to use laptop/keyboard, the default setting is the laptop screen. Right now I have to get the laptop lid closed, but barely open it for me to use the touchpad/keyboard.

What I'm looking for...

-Registry setting or permanently way of disabling the laptop screen.
-Permanent setting that always defaults the tv monitor instead of the laptop screen.
-I'm only going to use XBMC (windows to boot directly), and would prefer not to have setup the settings every time I turn it on.
-If above is not possible, anyway of setting Windows to think the lid is always closed?

Thanks,
John

I have a problem regarding a broken laptop screen, nvidia drivers that failed to install and a system that now doesn't output via it's own hdmi port. Yikes.

The screen was cracked some time ago, but hey, modern Laptops (the model in question is a Gigabyte Q1732) all have hdmi out, so I procured a good screen and continued to use the Laptop.

However, during a recent system and disk cleanup one of the tasks I had set myself was correcting an issue with my graphics driver that was using the default on-board as opposed to the nvidia GT540m that it was equipt with. I took the opportunity to uninstall the intel driver and the subsequently install the nvidia driver before restarting, as the switch over did not work on my previous attempts. That was probably my biggest mistake.

The nvidia installation failed, prompting restart into safe mode.

The hdmi port no longer outputs and so, with the broken screen, I can't see what I am doing to try and fix anything.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

Could I set up remote desktop? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I aquired an Aspire 4720Z laptop that the screen had been stepped on. I removed the screen (smashed on mid right side), but before removing (and after), I connected it to 2 different monitors--nothing appeared on either-black, power LED just blinks on/off although the computer sounds like it's working, lights come on, hear the drive , etc. I tried Fn +F8 and all other suggestions I could find, nothing. The laptop screen shows zero, not faded, nothing.Vusually, the inverter looks OK, no signs of anything else. Any suggestions as what to check/how to check while i have the screen off, what's next? --failure with the other 2 monitors bothers me.

A:broken laptop screen advice

When you hit the Fn+F8, did you wait a few seconds, then hit the combination again?

Make sure there isn't a small pin poking through near the hinge area above the keyboard that may be stuck (from being stepped on). This pin activates a switch when the lid is closed. (Some systems use a different method.) If there is a pin, be sure it works freely, is not stuck.

If the system was closed when the LCD was stepped on, it could have suffered damage under the keyboard, the video section of the motherboard, perhaps.

I don't want to buy a whole new screen or whatever that part is that the red and black wires are attached to... just to connect these wires.
Do you have any suggestions? The ends of the red/black wires look like they have solder on the ends - see the picture. If I knew the name of the little white connection part, maybe I could buy a replacement part and try to make due.

I now have it at my house and its still frozen, however I now have a message on the screen saying:
"The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to resume again?
(Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice.)
Continue with system resume
Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
Its highlighted on the delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu, but its frozen
This is a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 and Internet Explorer

Have you tried entering the BIOS and running the Toshiba hardware utility?
BIOS can normally be accessed by pressing F2 as soon as the laptop is turned on.
If F2 does not work you may have to try Esc, F1, F12 or Delete key.

I have an HP Pavilion dv6000. However, the problem is that the screen's dead and I can't see for love nor money anything on it to be able to connect a TV screen to it to be able to use it as an external screen. The machine itself still works, the screen's just on the blink. I have NO idea what keyboard commands I'd have to use to blindly connect the TV to the laptop to make the TV turn into a computer screen. I have one cable attached to both the TV and the laptop, but do I need another? I think the cable I have right now is a VGA. Would you help, please? It's really important.

Don't think I need to mention the OS in this forum, but just cuz it's reminding me to do so in the banner - Windows Vista lol

Thank you!

Our laptop screen no longer works (thanks to my son peeing on the computer!!!). We were connecting to our TV monitor via HDMI, but after my wife downloaded Windows 10, everytime we attempt to connect to the TV or any other monitor, we get a "no signal" message. I am computer illiterate, but I was hoping some knowledgeable people here would be able to assist.

Ok, so I received an older laptop from someone, a Gateway NE56R43u. So the screen is broken....a big crack in it, can't see anything. It needs to be replaced and I plan on doing so when I get money, but until then I'm trying to see if anything else is damaged. I'm using an external monitor, but it only works when I get into Windows. I can't get a picture in DOS or even get into the BIOS. So when Windows comes up, I can see everything...through the external monitor that is. I went to upgrade it to Windows 10 and everything seemed fine, but it's either stuck on something or it's a part where it's not in Windows yet and needs some sort of manual input, but I can't see anything. The external monitor isn't showing anything. The monitor I'm using is an old Lite-On LCD. I'm using a VGA input. Again, works in Windows, but it's stuck and I can't see anything. Any ideas on how to get it back to where I can see it again? Thanks.

Does the laptop have an HDMI port?
If I use an HDMI cable, I see the BIOS on the tv. Strangely the laptop stays black until Windows has completely loaded.

I want to connect it to an external monitor, when I hook it up, I can only see on the external screen until it boots up and then it clicks over to the lap top.

how can I fix this?

hi, i have jut installed windows 7 ultimate n 32bit, the problem i have is that i cant get my laptop to display on an external monitor - i need to do this as the screen on my laptop is damaged beyond repair - the startup process does, but after i get 'no signal'

now, when i re-installed xp a week ago, i had the same problem but managed to solve it by pressing F8 and choosing enable vga mode before xp loaded.
i tried to do the same with wndows 7 by choosing the low resolution option, however this doesnt work, i get the initial 'windows is starting' screen then 'no signal'

ive also tried pressing Fn + F5 once windows has loaded.

the laptop is an acer travelmate 4233, any help will be appreciated

Kinda begs the question on why you would want to upgrade a broken laptop...does the screen stay black? Does the welcome music play? Asking because Windows might be hanging up during boot....

A:laptop with broken screen second screem wont work help

This is a tough one due to your laptop screen not working and most integrated laptop graphics cards wont be able to push signal to a secondary screen when in safe mode. The best thing you can do is fix the issue with the laptop screen so you can see what you are doing. What exactly is wrong with the laptop screen?
