Microsoft confirms Windows 10 spring update coming in April with 18 months of support

Q: Microsoft confirms Windows 10 spring update coming in April with 18 months of support

Microsoft has been fairly tight-lipped about the next feature update to Windows 10. We know what's coming, due to Insider Preview builds, but the firm hasn't announced what it will be called, or when it's coming. The 1803 version number indicates that it will be finalized this month, but that doesn't mean it will be generally available.

According to a Microsoft Developer blog post that was published in February and then modified today, the Windows 10 spring update will land for the public in April, confirming everyone's suspicions. It also says that support for the update will end in October 2019, giving it the standard 18 months. If it's like previous versions though, Microsoft will end up extending it for an additional six months, which might make one wonder why the company doesn't just give it two years of support from the beginning.

The document also lists the 'Initial Build' as 17115, which would imply that the current Fast and Slow ring build is indeed the RTM, or the one that non-Insiders will get. We can confirm that this is not the case; in fact, it can't be. Xbox One uses Windows 10 as well, and the Preview Alpha ring is already on build 17118. Despite Windows 10 and Xbox One having different version numbers for Redstone 4 (1803 and 1804, respectively), they will land on the same major build number.

Obviously, we're all still waiting on a specific date in April that Microsoft will release the spring update, and to find out what it will be called. All signs point to it being the Spring Creators Update, but that's still not official.Click to expand...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9926 a couple of weeks ago with quite a lot of improvements, including a working version of Cortana and a revamped version of the Start menu, but it turns out that the company is already planning a brand new release for this month.

During the January 21 Windows 10 event at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Joe Belfiore said that the software firm wanted to update Windows 10 Technical Preview much more often than before and hinted that a new build would indeed come in February, most likely together with the preview version of Windows 10 for phones.

Now Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, has confirmed in a couple of tweets that Microsoft is indeed working to bring a new Windows 10 Technical Preview build to users, but he has explained that no specifics can be provided right now.

Microsoft confirms no more Windows 10 feature updates in 2016; two coming in 2017

Microsoft published a TechNet blog post on Tuesday regarding what's new in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. In the article, the company confirmed that it has two feature updates planned for 2017, but no more for this year.

Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.

The news is right in line with current rumors. Tuesday's Anniversary Update would be the one feature update for this year, and Redstone 2 - the codename for the next major Windows 10 update - isn't slated to arrive until April 2017. Redstone 3 is rumored as well, but without any release timing, so with today's news, it's presumably late 2017.

It's also in line with what Microsoft has already said. Back in May, the firm said that it would be pushing two feature updates for Windows 10 every year.

The obvious question that you're probably asking is, if Microsoft said that it would release two updates per year, why would the company only release one this year? Well, when Microsoft says the word 'year', it could mean a calendar year, or it could mean a fiscal year, which would be over at the end of June. With that in mind, the firm has released two major updates for Windows 10 every year, and is on pace to do so, even with Redstone 2 coming in April.

Microsoft rolled out a new Windows 10 cumulative update for PCs running version 1607 (Anniversary Update), and just as we reported yesterday, there were plenty of users who experienced installation issues.

In a post on the firm?s Community forums, Microsoft engineers confirm the installation problems and explain that the team is already investigating and developing a fix.

?Investigating?
There are no details as to when exactly this new cumulative update fix could be released, but it?s worth noting that Microsoft itself says that there?s no point in trying to install this cumulative update because it?ll keep failing anyway.

?Teams have dug into this issue and do believe the cause has been identified. The correct team is developing a fix/workaround and once we have the full details, we'll be posting that information. For your affected machines, there's no need to keep attempting the install. It'll keep failing. In the mean time, hold tight! We're all over this and will keep sharing information along the way,? Microsoft says.

Several company engineers have already joined the discussion thread on the Community forums, asking for more details on the problem, so it?s very clear that the firm is actively investigating the problem.

What?s more frustrating, however, is that this cumulative update actually experienced the exact same issues when being tested ... Read more

Following the release of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update this past summer, Microsoft on Wednesday shared details regarding what?s next in line for its operating system.

The Windows 10 Creators Update, as it?s being called, will deliver a wealth of new features and improvements. As rumored earlier this month, Microsoft has given its core graphics application ? Paint ? a major facelift (and a new name, Paint 3D).

Microsoft General Manager, Megan Saunders, explained the goal of the new app is to make 3D creation as simple as taking a photo or video on your smartphone. She used a phone to 3D-scan a sandcastle and imported it into the app for manipulation. Microsoft has a new website, Remix3D.com, where users can upload and share original content.Click to expand...
The Creators update includes a variety of other important features, many of which Microsoft didn?t announce at the event. Here?s what we already know about:

OneDrive File Placeholders: Windows 8.1 introduced ?placeholder? files for OneDrive?files that appeared in File Explorer but were actually stored in the cloud and only downloaded when you needed them. Microsoft removed this feature in Windows 10, but an ?on-demand sync? feature looks likely to arrive in Windows 10 to replace it.
Blue Light: Windows 10 is getting a ?Blue Light? feature, which works similarly to the venerable f.lux utility. Many operating systems have been adding this feature lately, including iOS with Night Shi... Read more

Hello Windows Insiders!

We?re excited to offer our Fast ring insiders a sneak peek at the latest features coming this spring to Windows Mixed Reality! Our favorite new updates in Insider Preview Build 17115 include:
A brand-new environment. In October we mentioned that the Cliff House was the first of many environments you?ll be able to enjoy in Windows Mixed Reality, and now we?re rolling out the Skyloft for you to customize and expand your MR experience. You can navigate there by selecting Places on the Mixed Reality Start menu.

You can now take mixed reality photos directly from your controller by holding the Windows button and then tapping the trigger. This works across environments and apps except for capturing content protected with DRM.
The automatic performance settings have been updated to provide an optimized experience, and we?ve added a new setting to override the default in Settings > Mixed Reality > Headset display.

Microsoft Confirms Windows 10 Bug Breaking Down System Reset

Some of the users who experienced issues caused by the recently-released Windows 10 cumulative update KB4013429 complained that not even System Restore worked and, in many cases, the Windows Reset feature failed to complete when all files were supposed to be removed.

And it turns out that System Restore not working is actually a widespread bug, with Microsoft confirming in an announcement that it?s aware of the issue and working on a fix.

Specifically, Microsoft says that in some cases System Restore fails with error 0x80070091, so the recovery process does not complete and leaves users with no solution to restore PCs.

Microsoft confirms Windows 7 install trick is legal

Microsoft employee chides 'hacks,' reminds users of licensing rules

By Gregg Keizer
October 29, 2009 04:03 PM ET

Computerworld - Microsoft today confirmed that users can apply a workaround trick to do a clean install of Windows 7 on a blank hard drive as long as they toe the licensing line.

In a blog post earlier this week, Eric Ligman, who works in Microsoft's worldwide partner group, took exception to stories that showed people how to use the less-expensive Windows 7 upgrade editions to install the new operating system on blank drives. Computerworld covered the upgrade install trick -- first reported by noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott -- last Friday.

"Over the past several days there have been various posts, etc. across a variety of social media engines stating that some 'hack' (be it a person or a procedure) shows that a Windows 7 Upgrade disc can perform a 'clean' installation of Windows 7 on a blank drive from a technical perspective," said Ligman.

"They often forgot to mention a very basic, yet very important piece of information," said Ligman about Thurrott's blog post and the resulting reports by others. "'Technically possible' does not always mean legal," Ligman said.

Excellent reminder. I have too many friends who don't want to hear it, after all OS's are supposed to last forever. I believe this reminder will help members be ready on dealing with this reality. Actually from what I recall support for XP was extended so anyone who has had XP since it came out (I forgot the year but I think it was 2001) will have 13 years out of it. I suspect about $800.00 for the average consumer can be considered a typical price for a computer with proper specs is a good number to determine an ROI of about $62.00 year. Even for heavier duty systems, the ROI still sounds good.

I would concur that IE sucks, no matter what they call it.

I am a web developer, and as one headache over IE that I have to deal with frequently is that in IE11 the select control looks so terribly bad, I have to resort to custom control usage, just so it looks the same across all browsers. And their customization for check boxes and radio boxes isn't much better, have to rewrite those every time. Not to mention the *****ic non-standard things they keep plugging in it still, like that moronic Clear button inside edit box that doesn't even issue the Change event when the content is cleared on that button press; - what ***** came up with that one?

I sincerely hope IE vanishes at last, just like Netscape Navigator did.

Microsoft is reportedly putting the finishing touches on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which is slated to arrive on August 2. The report comes from Windows Central, saying that build 14384 should be the first RTM (release to manufacturing) build.

The company has begun the sign-off process for the build, which means that it will put a variety of builds through internal tests, and then it will pick the best one for a public release.

According to the report, Insiders can expect to see a final build by the end of next week. The timeline isn't surprising. With the Anniversary Update less than a month away, we should certainly be in the polishing phase.

The fate ofWindows phones that are ineligible for the Anniversary Update is still undetermined. Such unsupported devices have had a sort of "upgrade at your own risk" option through the Release Preview ring. These users will be unable to install the Anniversary Update, but it's not clear if build 10586 will remain available for them.

The report also states that the Redstone 2 (Rs2) builds that Microsoft is compiling are in the 148xx range, and should begin shipping to Insiders in mid-to-late August. The Redstone 2 update isn't slatedto arrive for the public until April, 2017.

Google did not release a specific date when for when it intends to discontinue support.

Earlier this year, we announced that Google Chrome would continue support for Windows XP through the remainder of 2015.  At that time, we strongly encouraged users on older, unsupported platforms such as Windows XP to update to a supported, secure operating system. Such older platforms are missing critical security updates and have a greater potential to be infected by viruses and malware.
Today, we’re announcing the end of Chrome’s support for Windows XP, as well as Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, since these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple. Starting April 2016, Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes.
If you are still on one of these unsupported platforms, we encourage you to move to a newer operating system to ensure that you continue to receive the latest Chrome versions and features.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8
(Use option #2)

If errors, try this next:
DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8
(Use option #1 and run this command: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth)

The above may fix any corruption (if present). If so, please see if that fixes your issue.

Hiya

They're back! PowerToys are additional programs that developers work on after a product has been released to manufacturing. They add fun and functionality to the Windows experience.

Note We've taken great care to ensure that PowerToys operate as they should, but they are not part of Windows and are not supported by Microsoft. For this reason, Microsoft Technical Support is unable to answer questions about PowerToys. PowerToys are for Windows XP only.

I had updated the Windows 10 April Update on my Thinkpad X230. I use Bitlocker to encrypt C, D disks. Before update Windows, I suspended Bitlocker function on C, update all newest drivers downloaded from Lenovo for Thinkpad X230 (BIOS, Firmware, ...). After update Windows 10, I can use my laptop in some hours, then I shutdown it. However, from this time, I cannot boot Windows, it only boot on some seconds and automatically turn off. I use USB Windows to go to boot my laptop, then turn off Bitlocker in C drive, and I can boot and use my Thinkpad. Unfortunately, when I turn on Bitlocker again, my Thinkpad X230 cannot boot again. Any idea for me? Please don't tell me turn off Bitlocker.

Hi,

Has anybody read where Microsoft will end WIN 7 support in 6 months?

How long will Microsoft support Windows 7? | PCWorld

A:Windows 7 support ends in 6 months

Those articles have been popping up all over the place but MS will still issue security updates for 5 years. What will stop is "free" hotfixes and "design changes or new features".

As stated already a few times: the JCXP article was incorrect and as a result has been pulled from their frontpage and forums...

Just in... from a very reliable source. Windows 7 build 7105 is the Release Candidate build. Not just the escrow, but the final RC build. It is set to be released to the public from Microsoft in three days, on April 10th.

The build that just leaked, 7077 is also the RC, because 7105 is just 7077 re branded, for marketing purposes.

As with any rumor, things change. But, this is the current plan with Microsoft. I guess we will have to wait and see...

Source: Windows 7 Build 7105 to be RC... public release in 3 days! - JCXP Forums

I think the bold quote in the middle isn't true, because I saw this at Changes in Windows 7 Build 7077 | Redmond Pie :

UAC is yet to get that all important update which Microsoft promised on their E7 blog back in February 2009.

Hello.my laptop is 320s-13ikb was running win10 1709 flawless until yesterday update to spring update (Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.1]).now I'm facing with BSOD any time and any application - browsing the web, or working with RDP connection to my work. browsing files using Explorer or watching a local storage movie - any time. I've updated BIOS to the latest 5ZCN31WW, videocard drivers, windows updates - all SW and FW are the latest. unfortunally "modern" BSOD doesn't show anything usefull and there is no dump files to check. I've tried to rollback to previous 1709 build - and it's working good.after reinstall of 1803 BSODs are back. how to get the root cause of it?

Yay, another major windows update... another round of driver problems! Fun! After yesterday's big Windows update (Windows 10 version 1803, aka the Spring 2018 feature update) the Synaptics fingerprint reader doesn't work. Uninstalling and re-intalling the driver didn't fix anything. Device manager says:This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31){Operation Failed}The requested operation was unsuccessful. Has anyone found a work around? Thank you. setup:YOGA 720-15IKB Signature EditionWindows 10 1803 (OS Build 17134.1)newest fingerprint reader drivers straight from the website

Microsoft has confirmed officially a zero-day security vulnerability affecting Internet Information Services (IIS). The security hole was initially reported just ahead of Christmas on December 23rd, and the Redmond company provided the first response at the end of the past week. So far, the issue in question affects version 6 of IIS on a fully patched Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2; however, additional IIS
releases might also be impacted. A Microsoft security program manager notes that

Microsoft is aware of the problem and that investigation into the matter has already been kicked off. At the same time, the program manager assured customers running IIS that it hasn?t detected any active attacks in the wild targeting the new 0-day flaw.

The vulnerability identified in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) involves the incorrect manner in which the server deals with files with multiple extensions. As long as the multiple extensions are divided by the ?;? character, the IIS server handles them as ASP files.

A possible attacks scenario could be based on an exploit constructed out of malformed executables. Any malicious files uploaded to a vulnerable web server would circumvent any file extension protections and restrictions in place.

A:Microsoft confirms 0-Day IIS security vulnerability

Update:

Quote:
We’ve completed our investigation into the claims that came up over the holiday of a possible vulnerability in IIS and found that there is no vulnerability in IIS.

What we have seen is that there is an inconsistency in IIS 6 only in how it handles semicolons in URLs. It’s this inconsistency that the claims have focused on, saying this enables an attacker to bypass content filtering software to upload and execute code on an IIS server.

The key in this is the last point: for the scenario to work, the IIS server must already be configured to allow both “write” and “execute” privileges on the same directory. This is not the default configuration for IIS and is contrary to all of our published best practices. Quite simply, an IIS server configured in this manner is inherently vulnerable to attack.

Hi there
Title says it all --- I haven't even seen any leaks "at the usual places" yet --Ms really has got this one under wraps.

(Of course who knows -- there could be last minute glitches with it).

Cheers
jimbo

A:Nearly April --any news of Windows 8,1 update yet

A leak at this stage would be superfluous.

As I understand it, the full update will be with the normal bunch on the 8th April.

It is expected to be available for MSDN subscribers on the 2nd April.

Good news is that it will also be available as a WIndow 8.1 with update 1 incorporated, as an ISO to subscribers - but that is in the rumour category.
