Windows 8.1 Activation failed on cloned drives

Q: Windows 8.1 Activation failed on cloned drives

I just built a news system and did a clean install of 8.1 Pro 64-bit. Activated it without problems and did a clone to file using Paragon. Copied the clone to multiple drives to use on the same computer, to keep gaming on a separate disk. Everything worked perfectly until this morning when windows says its not activated and key is in use on another computer. The key has been used, but I swapped out the motherboard, cpu and ram and did a fresh install. The activation work without a hitch, but now activation has failed. Its only been running a few days, but I've been able to swap drives without a hitch. Is it the fact that I use multiple disks on the same computer or is it the fact that I have previosly used this key on different hardware? The key is not installed on any other computer.

Preferred Solution: Windows 8.1 Activation failed on cloned drives

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows 8.1 Activation failed on cloned drives

I believe that a new motherboard is seen as a different computer by Windows. If the Registration key has been used on another motherboard, it will say the activation is in use on another computer when the motherboard is changed.

If you have an OEM version of Windows (pre-installed by the PC manufacturer), a new motherboard is considered a new computer and you can't transfer the Registration key.

A retail version of Windows can be transferred, that's one reason it costs more. If you have a retail version of Windows, you have to call Microsoft to transfer the activation to the new motherboard.

Hi,

I had a hard drive fail on a netbook, and I put in a drive from another of the same brand that had died for other reasons. The new drive took like fish to water - no blue screens, etc. And Windows even updated, as did MSE.

But I'd like to make this machine honest by entering the Win7 product key that's associated with the motherboard, so the next owner will never have a problem. Will I have a problem doing that? I don't want to lose what I already have.

Thanks.

Hello Paul,

You shouldn't if you use the product key on it's COA sticker. If you do for some reason, a phone activation should sort it.

I have an Inspiron 3542 laptop that I just upgraded to Windows 10. The update completed but now the device is saying Windows 10 needs to be activated. The error message reads: "Activation failed because this device doesn't have a valid digital entitlement or product key. Error code: 0x803f7001". This is a Windows 7 Pro device purchased from Dell in 2014.  I tried calling the help line but they bumped me over to a fee for service help line because I am out of warranty.  If they sold me a device with an invalid key shouldn't that be on them to correct regardless?
Is there a simple fix to this.  It was activated and running fine before this upgrade attempt.  Should I just revert it to 7 Pro and leave it alone?

A:Windows 10 Activation failed

Al Owther,
Below is information to hopefully get your Windows 10 activated.
How to troubleshoot Product Activation in Windows 10:
This Activation Error Code 0x803F7001 in windows 10 is caused if you Clean install Windows 10 using flash drive. This Error may also occur if you update your BIOS.
Possibly there can also be issue with Microsoft activation Server and thus you are shown that your windows is not activated, In this case you can only wait and verify if it is the issue from Microsoft's side or the recent changes that you made to your PC.
You can try the steps below to activate by phone.

Step 1: Keep holding Windows key and Press R key to open up Run Command.

Step 2: Type Slui 4 in the Run Windows that pops up and hit Enter.

Step 3: Next you will require to Select your Country/Region, So do it and Click Next.

Step 4: You will be Presented with Toll Free number, Use your Phone now and dial the Number to get the Confirmation ID.

Step 5: Once you get the Confirmation ID numbers, Enter them in A to H Field Exactly the way they are Provided.

Step 6: Now Click on Activate, That's all !!!
Follow the Cycle Again:
In this method you will be required to follow the Cycle of Installing Windows 7/8 or 8.1 whichever OS you have with Product key. Then after its done, Download Windows Media Creation tool and Use "Upgrade this PC" Feature to Upgrade your PC from your Curre... Read more

Hi guys,
I have a problem with the windows 10 activation;
3 days ago I purchased this laptop, turned it on and initialized it, windows was active;
yesterday I dot the latest windows updates, including that one that looks like a brand new SO installation with multiple reboots and when it finally ended (after more than 2 hours) my SO was not activated anymore.
When I open "settings" and click on "activate windows" I can see the error 0x8007007b; clicking the Activate button does nothing.
I found some guides googling around but before I start copy/pasting the product key they say I can retrieve using
powershell "(Get-WmiObject -query ?select * from SoftwareLicensingService?).OA3xOriginalProductKey"
I'd like to know if there's a simplier. maybe more specific for this product, solution.

Some extra infos about my pc and license:

2: I got a sticker under the laptop with the windows logo but there is no key
3: no key in the few paper manual in the package either

I have T450 came with Windows 7 pro downgraded from Window 10 pro about 4 years before, and I cannot use either Win 10 or Win 7 with this machine anymore after formatting HDD. It was being used with factory installed Win 7pro for a while, then due to the virus related issue, I low level formatted the HDD this year. Since then I was trying to use the facory recovery USB key that came from Lenovo, but the recovery key from Lenovo was actually Win 10 pro instead of Win 7 pro; which was fine if I could activate the Win 10 licese properly.  After Win10 factory recovery was done with the USB key, the activation window says that "The product key used on this PC didn't work with this edition of Windows. You might need to get in touch with the store or company you bought Windows from, enter a different product key, or go to the Store to buy genuine Windows. Error code: 0xC004C060". I contacted Microsoft, and they traced the license key in the BIOS of the laptop, then told me that "The product key in your machine exceeded the maximum quantity of PC for activation. Please contact Lenovo to get proper license key." I contacted Lenovo support, but I could not get any help from the support except telling me that my laptop is now out of warranty. What should I do here? Should I purchase a new Win 10 licese again? Please help.

Activation key is embedded in the computer and you do not have access to it. Did you mistakenly enter a key? That is not necessary. The Activation will automatically scan the computer and read your embedded key. When reinstalling win 10 you skip the first question about a product key by choosing I don't have a key. Then activate after the reinstallation is finished.

Guys I need help.
My desktop pc (HP Touchsmart 300) broke down and the technician told me to change the disk. He changed the hard drive and installed again Win7 Home Premium. A fiew days ago, I did a clean Windows install, by downloading the .iso file file from the web (Microsoft's webpage I think). I burned it to a disk and I started the installation. When i asked for a Serial Number, I wrote the key, who was behind the pc. The setup continued, but when I entered the Windows desktop for first time, a message poped up saying "This version of windows is not genique"-something like that. I re-entered the serial but again nothing! What is wrong? Did the hard drive change affected my windows activation?

Thanks,

A:How do I use BCDEDIT with cloned drives?

If I understand correctly, you want to be able to chose between the 3 drives at boot time, correct? If so then BCDEDIT can do that but I would recommend using EasyBCD instead as it's a lot easier to use.

I have tried to figure this out, but no luck. I do a clone of my machine drive as a backup. Do this a couple of times per month. Well, finally need to recover a file from the clone. It is located under "users/mylogin/documents". Using the normal windows explorer, it will not show me this directory. I do have ownership of the users and all subs on the clone. Very frustrating. Finally figured out that I can drop to a system command level and use "dos" copy command and retrieve the file. Why does windows not show these directories? Is it because they are the same names as the mounted drive? If so, why do "dos" commands work fine? Other programs such as "treesize" are able to show these directories also.Windows Home Premium on Dell N7010 laptopAny help appreciated....

A:Can't see a cloned drives directories

Hello, and Welcome

It's possible the directory is hidden or listed as a System Folder. In Windows 7 file options allow hidden and system files. Is the directory listed then? But if the attrib is set to hidden or system, I don't understand how you were able to see it using the command prompt.

I need your help guys.. i've been all over the net trying different methods to clone my Windows 7 to SSD and failed repeatedly.

Here's my setup , I have an HP Envy 14 with a 500GB HDD. I bought an SSD to speed things up . I have 2 OS (dual boot) ,
Win7 & win 8 , on which Win8 is the default OS (as per easyBCD info). I only want to clone the Win7 part of the OS.
(Win7 - Drive C) , (Win8 - Drive F) , and Recovery on Drive D.

I've tried these t hings so farAfter defragging and backup)

1.while on Win7 , i created an image copy , but strangely thought, after the process is complete it says the image copy is Win8
I used EaseUs to Do Backup and cloned Drive C
Swapped the HDD with the SSD , and got a message could not find a boot drive

2. Since I failed on first try , I formatted the SSD , and opt for a fresh install instead.
-I downloaded the Win7 ISO , swapped the newly formatted SSD(empty)
-booted on the Win7 installer , and have the OS installed on the SSD.
- I thought I was done until I noticed HP assigned keys are not working , USB drivers are not working , I could not toggle wifi. The reason may be the missing drivers(bloatware from the HP recovery disk - since I did not copy that one)

3. After the attempts , I formatted the SSD . I read somewhere to use the HP recovery instead.
- I cloned the HP recovery drive from my HDD to the SSD
- Swapped the HDD with the SSD
- Started my Laptop , and Boot drive not found..... Read more

A:Cloned SSD - Failed to boot

Presuming you installed Win8 after already having Win7 on the PC, Win8 wrote its boot loader stuff to the same partition that Win7 uses. So, when you clone the Win7 stuff, it will naturally say Win8 because now, it has the Win8 boot loader present.

Cloning the Recovery partition to another drive is very likely NOT to yield the results you want -- the ability to use it to restore the PC to its original condition. Why? Because, in some cases , the PC restore function expects the Recovery partition to be in the original location on the drive.

I "migrated" my Windows setup from a HDD to an SDD and this is how I did it:
1) I installed EasyBCD in my Win8 on the HDD
2) I used EasyBCD to migrate the boot loader files from my Win7 OS partition to my Win8 OS partition.
3) To test out the migration, I did an image backup of Win7 to an external drive (using Macrium Reflect) and then erased that partition from the HDD. I rebooted, and since the Win8 boot loader started, that confirmed it had been moved to the Win8 OS partition.
4) Using MR, I made an image backup of Win8 to an external drive
5) I hooked up the blank SSD
6) I used MR to "restore" the Win8 image to the SSD.
7) I shutdown the PC, replaced the HDD with the SSD and rebooted.
8) Sorry, I don't remember if it booted at that point, but I have had problems with restores in the past, so I have a WinPE USB that I made using MR, and when this happens, I boot from that and use the option to repair the boot proc... Read more

Hello everyone,
This is my first post in this forum. So I have a HP notebook which had came up with preinstalled win 8.1 Single Language.I waited when windows 10 upgrade notification started coming up until today I upgraded.

Now,the "activate windows" watermark is showing up at the bottom of the screen.I did tried to activate windows but it failed with error 0xc004f074.I check this website's forum and someone suggested to activate the windows by inputting your windows 8.1 product key.I found it out by shadowkey plus. But the 0xc004f210 comes up "you are running windows 10.The product key you entered cannot be used to activate this edition".I am stuck here unable to rectify the activation situation.Someone please enlighten me here....

Tried my first attempt using Acronis clone feature to upgrade my Win 7 Pro 64bit system from a Hitachi Sata 2 750 GB drive to a Western Digital Sata 3 500 GB drive.

Cloning seemingly has gone flawlessly from within Windows 7 Acronis app/tools.
Now I don't remember how I setup the new drive partitions. I still have the original Hatachi drive in the box but it is not connected to a power cord.

The new system booted relatively smoothly...only activity was at first boot Windows showed the installing new hardware (new Western Digital drive) icon...install successful...please restart.

Restarted and alls seems well...question is can I reconnect the power to the old "C" drive and restart ? At this point both drives are 'named' the same: "Win 7 Hitachi 750 Main Drive"...but they had the same name after the innitial clone also

Do I have to change the status/partition setup on the old C: drive prior to reconnecting it and starting the system and if so how ?

Or...will the system/bios automatically correct the start up to the new "C" drive and re-assign a drive letter to the old "C" drive ? New WD drive is now on Sata 1 MB connection

At this point I plan on reformating the old "C" drive and using it for Media Center storage.

My concern is having 2 Windows 7 Pro 64bit "installations" in the same box ?
The bios has an option to set the boot drive...which was and is now Sata1...the new cloned drive.

It says there is no boot disk. I cannot go to safe mode at all. Can't get to a command prompt. I can get to system setup but that Doesnt seem to do much. I am running dps test but don't think I'll get anywhere with that. Suggestions??? Thanks much!!!

A:Cloned my pc and now both hard drives won't boot

Is the original hard disk in MBR format?  Since you are using Windows 7 that is probably the case. I suggest doing the following on the clone target disk first. If you boot to a Windows 7 installer and go to a comand prompt ,you will be able to repair the MBR(master boot record). After that is done, barring any other issues, the disk should be bootable again. Read the details in the tutorial at the following third-party web page.https://neosmart.net/wiki/fix-mbr/

Anyone know of a program which is basically the opposite of a duplicate file finder. Let's say I restored my OS image to the new drive using a backup image and the Win7 DVD, but now the two drives have a different number of files, and a different total space used. If I wanted to scan the two drives to find all the files that are not duplicates, is there a program for that? Or a drive/directory comparison tool which can tell me the differences between the drives. I'm concerned that windows image recovery didn't complete, and some files may be missing or corrupt, even though I can boot into the new drive with no problems.. Just want to make sure I'm not missing some obscure, but key files... thanks!

A:Looking for a program to compare cloned drives

I found a program, http://ipmsg.org/tools/fastcopy.html.en FastCopy. I have compared the two drives, and found ~800MB worth of files not found on the newer drive (2768 files or so). If I posted the log, would someone be able to browse it to see if I'm missing anything important. Some of it is browser cache and temp files, but some isn't...

I have recently updated my preloaded window 8 to 8.1. However, after the update it does not accept my old window 8 key and requires me to activate again using a product key. Here is the error code: 0xC004C003
My DELL XPS came with a preloaded copy of window 8 and yes it has a window 8 sticker at the back
and was fully activated before I updated to windows  8.1.  And as far as I know, system which comes with preloaded window 8 has its product key injected to the motherboard and 8.1 is a free update for window 8 users.
So why the update does not accept my window 8 key and ask me for a new key ? I know my window 8 key cannot be used for any other system because the key is injected in the motherboard and I don't even know the key myself.
So what can I do now for my Window to be activated again ?
More frustration is that I can't get back to windows 8.
I tried to reset to the factory image by using DELL backup & Recovery software built in the system.
However, after resetting to the factory image it does not accept embedded product key.

I cloned my HD with ghost, then tried booting from the new drive. It goes to my boot menu like normal, does the XP load screen with the progress bar or whatever at the bottom, then goes to the welcome screen, and there it hangs, and won't go any further. Is there something I'm missing? Did I need to Format the New drive before Cloning it or do I need to use Fdisk or some such?

I've been given a computer in the following state:
- Hard drive was reformatted with a clean install of Windows 7 Pro (same as shipped) which is now showing as not activated.
- I was told that an OEM disc was used to reinstall Windows but it looks like a retail version might have been used instead along with what appears to be a generic key.
- I do not have recovery media and I don't see a COA label on this model.
The computer all original parts and it's my understanding that the activation key is BIOS based. Is there way to activate Windows on the spot without tracking down recovery media, backing everything up, and then reinstalling?
I apologize if I've missed any critical information. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

A:OptiPlex 3020: Windows 7 Clean Install - Failed Activation

You can reactivate with OEM SLP usng the ABR program and Dell cert files. Personally however I would perform a complete clean install because it looks like the person who clean installed Windows 7 Pro didn't know what they were doing... See here:

Scenario:

A user has two 500GB hard drives, one installing in their computer, one is a USB hard drive.

If they cloned their currently installed hard drive onto the empty USB one, could they then do absolutely anything software based to their system (even as far as formatting the hard drive and installing another operating system) without fear of complications due to being able to reload the old image again later and get back to the very same state as the computer was when it copied?

A:Are cloned hard drives the ultimate recovery option?

Yes, as long as the user knows that the image will not reflect the current state of the hard drive. ie any thing added software / data after the cloning.

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Symptoms:
1. OneDrive explorer won't display in Modern UI (tries to load, shows splash screen/logo initially, but in a flash, turns black / displays blank/black screen and just hangs there. however, OneDrive does appear in left pane of my Windows Explorer, and in

I had two 3.5 SATA disks in windows 7 SP1 64 system. Unfortunately, my MOBO crashed and now i have no PC to recover data. When I took my drives to the  technician, his windows 7 machine identified these drives as foreign disks. there was neither import
nor convert options available in windows disk management utility. my first drive (320GB) was a basic boot disk and the second drive (1TB), a dynamic data disk. Both has data to recover. Because of the risk of data loss , we did not proceed further.

My next option is to buy external 3.5 HDD SATA enclosure and connect the disks to my laptop via USB. I also have an external 4TB USB drive connected to my laptop as a basic disk. My laptop runs windows 8.1 64 bit.

I'm looking for help in these areas.

1. Once the enclosure d HDD's are connected to the laptop via USB, will my 8.1 system show/recognise my external 3.5 HDD's in the device manager ?
2. My 3.5 HDD 's are coming from windows 7 SP1 64 bit system. Will my 8.1 64 bit system identify them as basic and dynamic disks respectively ? The drives are not encrypted.
3. What is the best option to recover/transfer data from my 3.5 HDD's to 4TB external USB drive in this setup ? I do have a Macrium Reflect disk utility.
4. Do i have to first import basic/dynamic disks or convert ? Which option is safer to recover my data intact ?  because i believe, these disks are foreign to my 8.1 system, convert will erase the data on the disks. I worry and confused about t... Read more

Gives a Boot Device not found and lists external several times along with unknown error.

I have been through the bootrec fixes and the BCDEDIT without success.

So the machine I am working with is a consumer line Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP Media Center and the latest A17 bios. It came with a 60GB sata hard drive that was almost full and wanted to upgrade to a larger drive. I grabbed a brand new Seagate 320GB hard drive.I booted up Acronis and attempted to clone to from a 60GB drive to a 320GB. Everything looked perfect. It saw all four partitions from the source drive and once done showed that for the destination as well. I shut off the computer install the new hard and proceed to boot. The computer attempted to boot but then received a stop 0x0000007b error (unmountable boot volume, for those unfamilar). Common issue when cloning disk so I proceeded to boot to an XP disk so I could repair the Windows install. Once it booted up, I noticed the drive was shown as a 58GB hard drive (the brand new 320GB drive). I restarted the machine checked the bios and it saw the drive as a 58GB hard drive. I pulled the drive and hooked it to four other machine that all stated the disk was now a 58GB hard drive. We checked disk management, booted to several hard drive testing tools and even poped it into a linux environment. The drive had been Permanently changed to a 58GB disk. To my disbelief, I started investigating. I tried another 320GB new hard drive, this time with ghost booted from win 98. Same process, everything seemed perfect. Reboot, dosnt start. I check the BIOS. This drive as well has been Permanently changed to a 58GB.Keep in m... Read more

First of all hello forum . I've been reading posts on this forum for about a year, ever since I started with the W7 beta on my old PC. I just purchased a "new" used PC from an ad on Craigslist, and everything has been fine for the past two months. Yesterday, I got the dreaded "This copy of Windows is not genuine" popups, and after attempted activation it seems that is indeed true. Some searching around on the internet has shown that people are using a "loader" program (whatever that is) to get around the activation, so i thought i would do a scan of my files to see if something like that was installed on my computer. Found it, complete with the classic "hacker" type upper and lowercase file name, something like "WiNDoWs7LoAdeR". After finding this file I can only assume that this copy of windows was activated illegally. I attempted to call the person I purchased the machine from and their number is now disconnected. Just my luck.

Now here is my problem. I would like to purchase a licence key and get this computer on the up and up, but W7 Ultimate is installed on it and there is no way I can afford a licence for this version. However, I am i Graphic Design student and I qualify for a great discount on W7 Professional (but only the upgrade version it seems). I am not sure of the differences between the two versions, and I am sure I am not using Ultimate to its full potential whatever that may be.

My question is this:
