X240 will not turn on at all

Q: X240 will not turn on at all

I?m unsure if I?m doing the right thing here, never posted anything like this before. The X240 laptop I have was working yesterday, and I put it to sleep so I could continue working later. However now it won?t turn on at all, except the lights over the F1 key, F4 key, and Fn are on. It wasn?t plugged in, but this has never happened before. I?ve also taken out the battery in a myriad of different methods people have suggested online but there?s been no mention of the lights still on. If if I could get some help, that?d be great. I don?t know much about computers.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, so I have a Lenovo think pad x240 as issued by my high school and I was using it last night and tried to power down by pressing the power button as I was in a rush but that did not work so I shut it down normally and now I am trying to turn it on and pressing the power button is not working, it definately has battery because I plugged it in overnight so I think the power button may be faulty, I have only had the laptop for 2 years. And yes I have tried the "secret code" trick but that does not work - presumably because my laptop also has an internal battery.I need help asap!!!!! Thanks in advance

Hi nstock98,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

Kindly request you to try with the below given troubleshooting steps.
Remove the battery and AC adapter
Remove the hard drive and wlan/wwcan cards
Remove both RAM modules
Re attach the AC adapter and boot
If you don't hear a series of loud beeps it probably means a hardware issue.

Please let me know whether the above steps helped you.
Thank you, have a good day.

Saludos,

Hi everybody, yesterday my X240 didn't wake up from sleep properly (LED backlight went on, nothing else happened), so I tried to restart it. When I hit the power button, the following happens:The power button LED and the Fn key LED light up and stay on.The red F1 and F4 LEDs briefly light up, as well as the keyboard backlight, but those go out after less than a second.I can hear some faint noise, the fan probably.Screen stays dark, no backlight. Connecting an external monitor does not help. I have tried to remove the power supply and external battery, pressed the Power button for 30 seconds, hit the emergency reset button, no results. Any ideas?

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X240 that suddenly turned off whilst I was using it. It was charging at the time, and I'm fairly certain that the laptop itself didn't overheat. I've tried disconnecting the battery and ac adapter, holding the power button, connecting them back on and pressing the power button but nothing. It would be great if someone could give me some help, thanks.

My brother got a X240 with a regular 1TB HDD, and I'm looking to help him with upgrading to an internal SSD for the OS/Apps. I first thought it just used a regular mSATA, but it apparently uses a new style called M.2.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find any info on what's supported, how large can they be, etc...

My local computer store has this for M.2 in 512gb size, would this fit in the X240?

A:X240 M.2 SSD

Howdy HiVolt,

I don't think that one will fit.  There are several different lengths of m.2 SSDs and the one in the X240 is 42mm.  The one you linked is longer than that.

Up until recently the highest capacity 42mm part was 128GB IIRC, but I think someone has come out with a 256GB 42mm unit.  [edit] I'm not able to verify that just now.  [more edit] Yes I am.  See post below.

Here's their compatibility list.  Please note I have no personal experience with this company.

Hi, We are experiencing issues with our x240-x260's Win 7 64-bit laptops Windows 8.1 and up seem to be ok so far The CPU is reaching 70 degrees and even goes up to 75 degrees in one case we have seen so far We have checked the task manager and the CPU looks fine, everything is appearing normal (CPU levels are average not high at all). Memory is also looking fine. Battery is also dead between an hour or 2 as well. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Thanks

I recently purchased a refurbished x240 - I am having 2 issues, which I would welcome help with: 1. the areas with buttons on the top and bottom of the track pad also move the cursor - this often causes an inaccuracy, with the cursor moving slightly before or after pressing one of these buttons - is there anything which can do done about this, or is it a design fault? 2. my computer arrived with no internal battery, just a 6-cell external battery - the seller claims that the internal battery only functions if the external battery is a 3-cell, and that there is therefore no point in me purchasing an internal battery - can this be verified? Thanks for your help!

Hello, In short, fn key does not work in lenovo x240 with latest bios update (2.35). I can swap fn and ctrl keys, and then function keys works via the ctrl key, but the fn key does not work as ctrl. I think this problem is OS independent (tried w10, w7, ubuntu). I have tried installing older bios for this model from the following page:https://support.lenovo.com/es/en/olddownloads/ds035950 But I can only install a few of the newest ones, as the older ones report that they are not compatibles with my system (though the readme says w7-w10 compatibility). No luck with any of the ones I could install. I also tried the hotkey features integration from here, no luck either:http://support.lenovo.com/es/en/downloads/ds029026  This question has been answered a gazillion times, but ill do it one more time as there is no solution posted anywhere. Hello and welcome,

I don't have a direct answer but there may be a way to finesse this.

Just did some poking around in the Win 7 wifi drivers.  Using the 64-bit Win 7 Intel driver,  I copied the link to the latest and replaced the "version" part of the link with an older version extracted from the readme.

I was able to download nz0wh0w 2016/05/10 by modifying the link to the latest version.

Does that or similar get you what you need?

I just got a 2nd hand X240 in a good condition. The problem is that even with the smallest of tasks, my fan spins up and the estimated battery life drops immediately. Just surfing the internet, nothing heavy, download a file, and ffffff the fan starts, the vent is spewing heat and the battery life drops to 90 mins. I've never seen any of this behaviour on any of my laptops. Anyone a suggestion? I have a clean install of Windows 10, browse with Edge, and fairly conservative power settings that I always use on my laptops. (most settings on power saving, cpu between 5-100%)

The mouse icon changes in the processing icon, you can still move your mouse but can't click anything or even press ctrl + alt + del. Have to long press the power key to get them to power off. I already read that there were problems with the fingerprint reader software, uninstalled it but still having the problems (fingerprint reader is disabled in BIOS). Also upgraded the fingerprint reader software to the latest version on another pc, but same problem. Ran solution center on one of the PC's, didn't find any problems. Ran system update and updated all to the latest version. Also tried to change the power settings to Performance mode in windows. But problem keeps coming back. I tried installing the latest Intel graphics driver, but it fails to start stating that you need a version from the manufacturer. No error messages in the windows event logs. X240 modei is 20AL00C1MB. Anyone any ideas where to look next? KR,Maarten

It is safest to use sticks that have Lenovo FRU stickers on them.  Most are compatible, but some are not.  You need DDR3L (low-voltage) RAM.  1.5V sticks will not work.  Also avoid those with the name "value" in them.

Can an X240 laptop have both an M.2 SSD and a WWAN card simultaneously installed?  Or is there only a single M.2 port such that you can only have one or the other? Also, if you buy an X240 that comes from the factory with an SSD, is the factory SSD an M.2 SSD, or a 2.5" SATA3 SSD? Thanks.

A:Can x240 have both an M.2 SSD AND a WWAN card?

Read the PSREF for x240 options:SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high, removable, upgradableDouble-sided M.2 SSD, via M.2 Card slot, exclusive with WWAN cardSingle-sided M.2 SSD, via M.2 Card slot, exclusive with Smart Card readerSo x240 can be configured even with 3 drives simultaneously:- 2.5" SSD or HDD- m.2 SSD- m.2 cache SSDWWAN card could be installed instead of the 2nd m.2 SSD, seems PFREF has a fault, look at the HMM for confirmation. If you purchase x240 from the shop.lenovo there is a couple conditions:- in order to get 3rd m.2 slot and cache SSD you should choose basic model with HDD. System Expansion Slot for the cache m.2 SSD will be added automatically; - or choose the model with 2.5" SSD. In this case you should add Smart Card Reader which could be equipped with 3rd m.2 SSD slot. But it's not all - you should find on aftermarket or purchase from Lenovo service center adapter and cable for the 3rd m.2 SSD youself. Look at x240' HMM and fru_bom file for details.Note cache m.2 SSD from Lenovo has a small capacity, so you should replace it to your choice. The only limitation is the formfactor - it should be single-sided 22x42 mm to fit into the slot. So the nomenclature and capacity are limited.

Hi,I bought a Thinkpad X240 a few months ago, it was working perfectly except the know bug of the "bottom left corner" which happened a few times. But a few days ago, the screen backlight suddenly stopped working. I put it to sleep, I came back home, I opened the lid and the screen didn't light up.The screen itself works perfectly (if you put a light on it you can see what's displayed), and there's no other problem. This doesn't seem to be a software problem since I doesn't work in the BIOS, nor in Windows or Linux.. Why does the backlight would suddenly stop working ? Thanks in advance,

A:Thinkpad X240 no backlight

Same here. The backlight is out in the bios as well so I believe mine is a hardware problem. For other thinkpads, I find people saying this is a surface mount fuse on the motherboard and can be "fixed" by bridging the fuse with solder. But I can't find a fuse near the display port that is bad. The most likely fuse I find is F2 on the backside of the board near the display port, but it doesn't measure as an option circuit so I don't think that one is bad. I will probably buy another broken laptop and swap parts.

The X240 is more expensive, but IS that because of better sound or just the ipod dock? I have an ipod so that would be helpful, but I definately don't want to sacrifice any sound quality.

A:X250 Trackpad in an X240?

Hello XThinkpadUser, I am very sorry, but I advice You to forget this idea. There are most likely going to be some imcopatibilities in BIOS, and if not so, then some differences with the shape of the keyboard / trackpad connector. Plus you would need to replace the whole keyboard bezel. My opinion is based on the same glitch with old X200 and X201 - many people asked if X200 can be backwards upgraded with touchpad - it can be definitely not (afaik). Nobody can mark your question as impossible until first X250's arrive, but in your case I would hurry selling your X240 unit. Sooner you do it, you will get more paid for it... (believe me, you have my best sympathy, but I am in much more huge trap - what shall I my X220 change for?? :-) ) Regards, skrble

Hi folks, I have an X240 that just ran out of warranty. I was having some intermittent hard drive troubles so I sent it in before the end of the warranty, and it came back with a new hard drive. Unfortunately, it no longer recognises my external batteries - I have two, both genuine Lenovo, one 68 and one 68+. Lenovo won't fix it as they say it's related to the battery latch being broken, but the battery latch has been broken for a whole year and the batteries always worked just fine. When I first got the computer back the batteires weren't showing up in Windows power manager, but I could see them in Lenovo Settings where they were showing as "good" condition. The 68+ had 5% charge and the 68 had about 80% charge.  I did a heap of Windows updates etc. which didn't fix it, then tried to "reset" the 68+ through Lenovo Settings, after which it stopped showing up there at all. I now get a message about a battery error when I boot to Windows. I haven't put the 68 back in for while, though I guess I could to see if it still shows up. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas why the computer might have suddenly stopped recognising the batteries, and anything I can try to try to get my battery life back (going from about 10 hours to about 1 hour makes the computer kind of useless for what I use it for). As I said, I'd be very surprised if it was to do with the latch, as that's been the same for ages. Thanks in advance

Hello,I'm sitting here absolutely confounded. I just reinstalled Windows on my x240 and decided that, while I was at it, I might as well remove my BIOS password, as I am no longer in school. I primarily use my laptop at home, so a password isn't really necessary.I go into the BIOS and straight to the security tab. I start disabling everything that is enabled and related to Supervisor password, Boot-up password, Start-up password and so forth. At one point, I am prompted to type in my current password and next to fill in my new password and to type it in once more. Being somewhat familiar with how unintuitive a BIOS can be, I leave the fields where I have to type in my new password blank, thinking that the BIOS will then assume that I want to have no password. I leave the fields empty and hit ENTER. It accepts this for some reason. I get a system halt for some reason and my laptop reboots. I am then prompted to type in my BIOS password as per usual, but it won't accept the password I usually use, which means there's an active password, but no longer the one that I've set prior to this. I try different passwords, I try just hitting ENTER, but no luck.I am locked out of my laptop and every Google result even remotely related to my issue suggests that I have to purchase a new motherboard for my x240. Really?I did not set a new password, I left the fields BLANK and hit ENTER. I have no idea what the password could be.I figured perhaps the BIOS password reverts to a prior password,... Read more

A:Lenovo x240 LOCKED OUT

Ok, this is embarassing but it might be something to learn from.I just remembered the very first BIOS password I set. I tried it, and it worked. Leaving the fields blank caused my BIOS to revert to the earliest password, which is the password I set prior to the one I am using now.Either that, or my supervisor password and my start-up password were different.Anyway, feel free to mark my thread as resolved or just delete it.

Edit: Found it I think! These two part numbers: 04X3939 04X3827 Hi  Wondering if anyone can help me in finding the part number for this daughter board/caddy/housing (not sure what it's called!) so that I can connect up an M.2 SSD to my laptop. I did take the laptop apart and can see the blank space where an M.2 drive would go, but I don't see the following metal part with ribbon cable (which I refer to as a board/caddy/housing above):  Cheers

Hello Each time i press space bar key, there is a very small delay before space appears on screen. So i make a lot of typing errors. Computer is X240, BIOS is 2.16, every driver is up to date. Windows is 8 PRO. It does the same with Windows 7 so i think it's a software issue. Lenovo E420 had that before and problem was fixed by a BIOS update.

A:Space bar key delay on X240

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Try this. Go to control panel -> Keyboard. Change the repeat delay to short and repeat rate to fast.

Try in different applications like Word/Notepad and in different browsers like Mozilla/chrome and check if the space key behaves in a similar way.

Best regards,
Mithun.
