Windows Firewall Service unable to activate, SFC scan unable to work

Q: Windows Firewall Service unable to activate, SFC scan unable to work

Well I got a big problem.

A couple days ago I noticed network connectivity issues. Random connection drops, overall bad connection, etc. I recently had some really bad malware and I removed it, so I suspected leftover malware from the start. I went to check Windows Update to see if I missed a security update, and it wasn't even on my computer. Something removed the service completely off my computer, so I found a .reg to fix it. I then started Windows Update and found that I had 30 updates missing and updated all of them successfully.

I then decided to see what was going on with my Windows Firewall, only to find that it was also removed. Wasn't in my services or anything. So I downloaded the .reg to fix that, tried to activate the service, only to run into another roadblock that I still haven't been able to fix, an error stating

"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs".

Ok. So I checked my services again and I believe that some more were completely missing(Base Filtering Engine, NSI proxy Service). So to try and remedy this, I attempted an sfc /scannow in elevated cmd prompt.

Then another brick wall. I get to 59% and then I get this message

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Trustedinstaller service is turned on, so I have no idea why I'm getting this message. But I tried doing the command again, both in safe mode and windows repair. In safe mode I get the same error, and in windows repair trying to execute the command only gives me another error saying that I have to restart windows to perform the sfc because its in the process of repairing (even though it shouldn't be). I restarted again and tried to do the command in repair mode yet again only to get the same message.

My computer still operates normally, its just I really want to turn on Windows Firewall so I don't get completely destroyed by more infections. Installing Windows again is not an option, as I don't have the disc or even a working disc drive. I'm also trying to save my hard drive and don't have anything else to back it up on (I also have no money) so I'm trying to get this fixed without wiping my system.

Preferred Solution: Windows Firewall Service unable to activate, SFC scan unable to work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone,A friend asked me if I could restore it's performance of it's laptop and make it go 'faster' again. So I did the usual Disk Clean and Defragmentation also I noticed the AVG was acting weird.Every time I started AVG Free, I would get a 'Server is busy' dialog with 2 available options, Switch to or Retry, which basically do nothing. After reinstalling AVG few times, uninstall, avgremover, search and delete, ccleaner, install and still getting the error.I tried Housecall, but that couldn't find any threats, so used Spybot S&D, got a few tracing cookies and MalwareBytes with some stuff, can't remember what. Also i've updated my drivers with Driver Genius Pro.Anyway I found this site after a bit of Googling, and ran a DDS scan, which worked like a charm, but the first attempt of GMER gave a BSOD, second time it worked, however it was slow as hell and freezed from time to time, after 18 hours it stuck on a freeze that it couldn't get out from.I'm kinda curious what is eating this computer and promised my friend I would help 'fix' his computer, so please help, thank you.Greetings Rob//EDITAlso i'm unable to Enable the Windows Firewall for some reason and Windows XP language is Dutch------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by rob at 14:33:37,84 on vr 11-06-2010Internet Explor... When clicking advanced firewall settings I get the error code 0x6D9. When I try to check for updates, I get the message that "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I think both issues might be related to malware that was previously removed. Any thoughts?? I would really appreciate any help whatsoever! Thanks in advance.

I purchased a new xps13 from dell over two weeks ago.  Currently the laptop is working fine, however, I've tried tried to register the laptop under 'my products' multiple times since receiving the laptop.  Whenever I try to enter the service tag, it keeps giving me an error "Products not found. There’s no match for the Service Tags that were entered."  At first I thought maybe it was because the laptop was new, but it has been 2 weeks now and I'm still getting the same message.
Not only that, but I've been trying to contact dell through email for 2 weeks now and I always get the same "you will get a response in 24hour" reply but nobody ever replies.  I feel like the biggest moron right now because I paid for 3 years of 'premium support' and you won't even answer a freaking email.  I'm pretty close to just returning this laptop and buying a piece of *** macbook because at least apple responds to support requests.

Hello,

I purchased a Lenovo y510p which came installed with Windows 8.1 (not pro). Later I decided to upgrade to Windows 8.1 pro but at that time I didn't activated it. So, right now an "activate windows" mark is coming on lower down side.
So firstly, I quickly bought a genuine windows 8.1 pro x64 key. But now, when I try to activate the computer through activation center, then it says that this key won't work. Moreover when I try the "slmgr.vbs -ipk <key>" method, then it gives an error saying: "Error: 0xC004E016 On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition".

Please let me know that how do I fix these errors and successfully activate my computer.

Where did you purchase your new 8.1Pro Key from?
From what I can see, the current Key appears to have been declared 'expired' - I'm not sure whether this means that it's out of the grace period, or that the Key itself is wrong.

You should really be asking this question on our sister forum - www.eightforums.com - where people with more experience of Win8.1 upgrade problems may be able to help better than I can.

Becasue of security problems, was forced to attempt repair of windows xp sp2. Repair succeeded but then prompted for activation code. I inadvertently may have entered the wrong code as I have several licenses.
Now when I boot - I get the windows login screen - when I click on the user name - error message comes up says - this copy of windows must be activated - options are yes or no - clicking on yes brings up a blank desktop for a very long time and then puts me back at the login screen - clicking on no puts me back at the logon screen right away.
I believe the problem is that windows cannot access the internet to authenticate the activation but I cannot connect to the internet without windows.
A real catch 22!
The system boots in safe mode!
Any help would be appreciated

why was there a repair to begin with, maybe related?

as far as the activation, the best thing to do is to try the repair again and make sure you use the proper key.

The "Activate Windows" program states "Windows can't activate. Try again later"
Clicking on the "Error details" displays a blank box (see image).
Running slui 4 hangs / spins at "call and provide your installation id"
slui 3 states my key doesn't work
Running the windows update diagnostic provides these fixes:
Service registration is missing or corrupt - Fixed
Windows update error 0x80070057 - Fixed
Problems installing recent updates - Fixed
(Note none of these are fixed, and it provides this output every time the diagnostics tool is run)
Booting from the disk and running a refresh states the drive is locked and must be unlocked.

A client brought me an Envy dv7 laptop that had come originally with Windows 8.0. He reported that it had be updated to Windows 8.1 and then Windows 10. He wanted to transfer the machine to a relative, so did a factory restore back to 8.0. He brought it to me to return it to Windows 10. To save time, I did a clean install of Windows 10 and it reported activated. Now, a few days later it says it is NOT activated. After speaking with Microsoft, I was told I had to retrieve the original imbedded Windows 8.0 license key from the motherboard an input it as the license key to activate Windows 10. I don't have any idea how to retrieve that key and from the reading I've done, HP is not likely to be helpful on this. I've even tried Windows 8.0 and 8.1 OEM keys I have in stock, but they do not work.  I'm open for suggestions and/or assistance on this.

A:Unable to activate Windows 10

Hello, This falls under Microsoft responsibility. HP might be able to help you activate Windows 8/8.1 which originally was installed on the PC. After it migrated to 10, it is using MS methods (so to say).  If the computer had previously Win 8/8.1 and was eventually upgraded to Windows 10, then it is activated using Digital Entitlement method, therefore no keys/codes are needed for activation. If Windows 10 is later reinstalled, then it should activate fine without any codes as long as these conditions are met:- the computer is the same- the hardware is the same- the correct Windows 10 edition was installed  If the computer originally had Windows 8.1 (e.g. Standard edition) but now you installed Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, then it will not work. Most probably this is the case. Based on the official documentation, this computer comes with variety of options and some are Windows 8 (standart/plain edition), the others come with 8.1 Pro. Please, check which one was the edition originally installed, take Windows 10 from MS with the correct edition and reinstall it >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO Windows 10 should activate fine using Digital Entitlement >> https://support.microsoft.com/is-is/help/12440/windows-10-activation Let me know how this goes.

Hello all.

I recently formatted my computer and reinstalled Windows. However, I was forced to use my dad's disc, which is notably a few years older than mine, to install. I had lost my disc, but still had my serial code. Now, I'm unable to activate Windows with the tool that keeps prompting me to do so. It says "Online activation cannot be completed at this time." Obviously my internet connection works fine, but otherwise I have no idea what the problem may be. I was able to update with the Automatic Updater just fine.

My alternative is to either find my own disc (I've been searching for weeks to no avail) or activate it by phone. I would prefer not to have to call Microsoft. Another alternative I could think of would be to take my rig in to the shop which built it for me, and explain things to them. If I give them my serial code, is it possible they may be willing to do a format/reinstall with my code?

Thanks!
~Aika

you will probably need to call them to activate it, if it's a legit install, it's relatively painless process over the phone (at least here in the states it is) have had to do it numerous times at work

We bought this laptop about a year ago at Best Buy, but haven't used it much until recently. I see that Windows 8 is not activated, however, when I go the system page to activate it, nothing happens. I have tried EVERYTHING, including: Downloading the Windows 10 update(this won't work unless the current version of Windows is activated)I checked the properties of this PC, and for Product ID, it says "Not Available".Additionally, I used a 3rd party program (belarus) to ID the Windows product key, so I tried to manually activate Windows using the key, and get a message that the key is not valid. I have done this MANY times, just to make sure I'm entering the right key. At this point, this product is near useless, as I can't even install Windows updates until I can validate/activate the current OS.  FYI, the version of Windows 8.1 is Build 9600, whatever that is. This notebook did not come with a sytem DVD or a hard copy of Windows, either. I even tried restting the computer to the original factory settings, and that didn't help either. I'm hoping there is a solution for this - help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi

I have a laptop here. I have been forced to do a repair install on it and when entering the Welcome screen, XP lets me know that the prodict is not activated. Would you like to activate now? Yes No.
Either answer results in a windows shutdown jingle and loops back to the welcome screen to start the game again.

Have tried in safe mode, but the same happens with the exception that it also let me know that Microsoft cannot activate in Safe mode.

I have performed many many repair installs with XP, first time for this!

As a sidenote, wgatray.exe was playing up a fair bit before the reinstall. Lots of red marks in the even viewer.

The cd I am using is a system builder XP SP2 and the key is legitimate.

Any ideas guys and gals?

I just purchased Windows 7 64bit upgrade.

I installed it on my Windows XP computer. According to the official microsoft guidance, this upgrade can only be done as a "clean" or "custom" install - in place installs don't work when upgrading a 32bit system to 64bit.

Anyway, I installed Windows 7 no problem, but when trying to activate I am told 0xC004F061 error, This product key is licensed only for upgrading, not for clean installations.

What do I do? This is a valid CD for installing Windows 7 to an XP computer, and I have a valid XP COA - how do I activate the software I paid for?

Bless,
Chris

Hey.  Basically I made some hardware changes to my computer (a year ago or so) and now Windows is requiring another activation.  Problem is, I don't have access to the Internet through that computer and when I called tech support they told me that because I can't produce an installation ID# (there wasn't one on the dialog box), I have to format and re-install the OS.  I really don't feel like doing that (not just because I tossed the installation CD my computer came with), and this is Microsoft after all, so I'm basically asking is there another way to activate?  Would an Internet connection get the job done or is there something else I can do?  Thanks...

A:Unable to activate copy of Windows XP Pro

Activation...is the province of Microsoft...as is every version of Windows.  PA protects MS property/legal rights.

Are you saying that you tried a telephonic activation?

I've not heard of "installation ID"...a user needs the license/key to activate.

If the system is an OEM system (made by Dell, HP, etc.)...a change of key hardware items has been considered a change of system by MS...since 2006 or so.

Something has taken over my computer. This virus closed my Zone Alarm firewall and AVG Anti Virus programs and I am unable to get them on again! I'm unable to run a HijackThis or run Malewarebytes programs either. The only way I can get online, is via shortcuts in my favorites menu, which I opened from a documents folder.

When this first happened, an "XP Total Security" window kept opening , and doing a scan for viruses at every reboot. Then it would prompt me to a website, to buy a program to fix it.

I was unable to run msconfig to uncheck it at start-up. I am unable to open the add/remove page in the control panel.

My computer is a 2005 HP Pavilion zv6000 series laptop, running XP.

I also tried System Restore, which I tried to run from Safe Mode, but it would not go back to before the problem.

I am unable to run any .exe programs at all.

I tried to Format the drive, but it would not let me do it.

I need this computer to find a job. I wish I could get a new computer one, but I just don't have the money.

PLEASE HELP!

First off, thank you to whomever helps me work this out.

The problem: I have recently inherited a Eee PC c/XP sp3 and wanted to install Openoffice on it. Attempting to install open office triggered an error, which requested I update to the latest version of IE. Upon trying to activate windows update in order to install IE and any other necessary updates I run into a series of errors preventing me from activating it. I then tried to dwnld/install IE 8 from microsofts update page, which was on 50% successful. During the install I encounter a ieseptup.exe - Bad image error which reads:

The application or D:: C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuapi.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

And that is where I am currently at.

A:Unable to activate windows update/install IE8

You do not need to update IE8 to install Open Office. Any browser Firefox, Chrome etc will work
For your other errors, go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow put the XP CD in and it will replace any missing or corrupted files from the disc

I bought a new laptop (GIGABYTE P35K-CF2) a couple of days ago and have been struggling to activate it without making any progress. In contrast with other threads I have been reading on the forum, I am not trying to install a different OS version at all. I just need to activate the Windows 8 Professional that was pre-installed by default.

I understand the current Microsoft approach is to embed the Windows Product Key in the motherboard (encrypted in the BIOS/UEFI) in order to minimize piracy, etc. I also understand this allows for the Windows installation to directly read such product key and activate it automatically. Well, for some reason this is not working on my brand new laptop.

Allow me to explain in detail what has been happening during the last 24 hours:

1) I noticed a pop-up window that required a new Windows key since the current product key was apparently blocked. Please notice that up to that point I didn't change anything regarding to Windows itself. In fact, I only installed a couple of programs, including an antivirus. Automatic updates were also turned off.

However, Windows won't activate because the product key is already in use. I've tried looking on-line for product keys but none of them work.

Hello,

I'm in a twist and I'm not exactly sure what the problem is.

I bought a new laptop with Win8 pre-installed (and immediately updated it to 8.1).
I decided after a week to buy an SSD and installed Win8.
I now find there is no product key to be found, and can't seem to activate Windows.

1. I've tried a few things. I tried to enable UEFI in PC Settings, but the setting isn't there (does this mean my laptop doesn't support UEFI?)
2. I entered my BIOS. CWM was enabled, and pwe enable. But SECURE BOOT disabled. So I enabled SECURE BOOT, but regardless of what options I select, the laptop keeps booting into the [Legacy] BIOS, possible because there are no BOOT OPTION PRIORITIES found any longer?

And where I'm at. My problem is activating windows, and if UEFI is an option, enabling it.

Ok I've been trying to find a solution for 3 days now. I've ggogled a lot but only found the standard ways but nothing helps.

The problem at hand is this:
I'd been using Windows Search (in the explorer upper right corner and start menu) often and intensely. After a session of using CCleaner and a reboot my Search Service didn't work anymore. It even disappeared in the Service Manager (services.msc). I found that the files SearchIndexer.exe, SearchFilterHost.exe and SearchProtocolHost.exe were missing from the system32 folder and the syswow64 folder. The file SearchFolder.dll is ok and there BTW (in both folders).
I used "DLL Suite" to download these files but they seem to be incompatible with my system somehow. Since the cmd prompt "regsvr32 SearchIndexer.exe" gives me the error that i should check the compatibility of the file for a 32 or 64 bit version of regsvr32.exe.
Furthermore when I add the files manually then it appears in the Service Manager but it says "Failed to read description. Error Code: 2" and if i try to start it "failed to find the patch specified" (the event viewer displays an error with the same message).
When i activate the search service through the feature manager it works fine, configures to 30% then reboots, starts off at 35% and - at the last try up till now - it got through to 98% then immediately switches to failure configuring-revert changes and the files get deleted.

This tool seems to have broken the sound and wifi (it now won't turn on and cannot detect any sound devices). I tried to do a restore but I misread and seemed to select an option which deleted all the installed software and this has now removed all the initial software from Toshiba.

As such I have a fairly major problem... I could just restore my factory setting but I am not keen to do so and I have been very lax with backups of all but the most important files. Is there anywhere to download the original toshiba software so I can restore all this functionality?

Hi Everyone,  I just swapped out the hard drive in my ThinkPad T510 and replaced it with a zippy SSD.I installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 thinking I have my Windows 7 COA (clearly visible under my battery). But I was unable to activate Windows 10. I called Microsoft and they said yes, I have a geniune copy of Windows 7 BUT that the OEM (Lenovo) was blocking the activation. I called Lenovo and they said it's a Microsoft issue. I called Lenovo again and they said I needed to pay $45 for recovery discs because my "real" Windows 7 code was secreted in a system board, and once I retrieved that, I would have to install Windows 7 on my new SSD, then upgrade to Windows 10 and the activation would take. Um, really? Isn't there an easier (and cheaper) way to accomplish this? Again, my Windows 7 COA is clearly visible under my battery but it didn't work. What am I doing wrong? And can anyone out there make it right? Thank you so much!

I just spent the last three hours on the phone. I was transferred 5 times and no one could help me. I want to rage beyond words right now.

So here is the problem...

I have a legitimate copy of Windows 7 ultimate. (that I bought in 2010 from my college.)

When windows 10 came out I made a mistake and did a CLEAN install not knowing the idiotic rule of not being able to validate the old windows 7 key. (validation only works if I did a windows 7 to 10 upgrade FOR SOME STUPID REASON.)

Now I am stuck in windows 10. My windows 7 key will not validate to re download windows 7 in order to UPGRADE to windows 10.

I have the disc of windows 7 but I do not have a CD rom. (so I will need to do a USB install)

When I call Microsoft they check my key (to ensure it is valid) they say everything is fine with it, but like I said I cannot use it.

I have not given this key to ANYONE. I also did not deactivate it before the windows 10 clean install.

When I attempt to download the windows 7 download and enter my key I get this response...

"Error
The product key you entered appears to be for software licensed through an Enterprise Agreement. Please contact the Volume Licensing Service Center for software recovery options or visit the Volume Licensing Home Page for more information on Enterprise
Agreements"

Someone please for the love of god help me. Every person I have talked to on the phone or on a forum for Microsoft has been the opposite of helpful. The... Read more

Ok, I have officially made the dumbest mistake in my computer history.

After being afflicted by the rundll32.exe virus I attempted to run virus/trojan scans and I deleted some files in my startup directory thinking they were malware. However, now when I start up windows I get the log in screen and am unable to get passed it. It will now log into windows, load my personal settings and then it will instantly shut down that sign on, save the settings, and go back to the log in screen. I have done everything i can think of including safemode, safemode with command.... everything I do takes me back to that log in screen. I decided to just give up and tried to just use the Windows Restore CD, and I can't even use that because it wants to go straight to that same window log in screen, I couldn't get the restore prompts to come up.

Does anyone know anyway that I can abort the windows log in screen without being able to sign into windows ( I didn't know if perhaps there was a keystroke combo). I tried to find away through the F2 and F8 menus .... but I can't find away around that screen. Restore to "settings that worked correctly last time"... does nothing, back to windows log in.

I was so close to clearing the virus and now I have made it about 20 x worse. I fear there is nothing left to do than to call the Geek Squad.

If no thoughts on this, could someone explain how to get my computer to use the Windows XP reboot disk? It doesn't seem ... Read more

A:Unable to log into windows after running a scan

well, if windows is that messed up, and if it were me, I would download a linux boot disk, like say ubuntu, (its a small download and is fairly easy to use) and boot up off of that, (dont install it, just boot up off it) get all the files you want to save off of the computer using ubuntu (or linux distro of ur choice) and then use linux to erase the hard drive and then reload windows. (that is if u have a windows installation cd) instructions on how to do it: download the linux u want, I would say ubuntu, prolly the 32 bit version for combatibility, put it in your CD drive, restart the computer. it should automatically boot from CD, if not you will have to change the order in the bios. when it loads, it will give you a menu, the top option is try ubuntu without installing, click that. ubuntu will then boot up off your dvd drive. if you know how to boot from USB you can put linux on a flash drive as well. from there, you can access all the folders and files on your computer, save them to flash drives or move them to another computer via network, and then you can either restart the computer and reformat the drive using the windows disc and a clean install, or use linux partition manager to erase the drive. probably easiest to just do a clean install using the windows after that unless you are somewhat familiar with linux-backing files up with it is pretty straightforward but much beyond that can be confusing if your not familiar with it.
