DVD drive not working when plug IDE cable into it.

Q: DVD drive not working when plug IDE cable into it.

Hi their first of all my computer spec:

I have a thermaltake supranoVB1000SWS case, Asus P5KC motherboard, windows 7 ultimate 64bit, Intel Quad core Q6600 CPU, 2GB corsair XMS DDR2 800mhz RAM, 1TB Samsung spinpoint hard-drive, DVD-drive

what it is, I bought my new case ( the thermaltake supranoVB1000SWS) a couple of weeks ago, so obviously I had to swap all my hardware into it from my older case.
Everything worked perfectly in my older case, its when I swapped everything to my new case that I started having problems with my DVD drive.
When I connect the IDE and power cable upto it, and switch my computer on their is no power getting to the drive, well no lights light up, flicker or do anything.
But once i turn my computer off and remove the IDE cable, but leave the power cable in, the DVD drive powers up, the draw opens and closes like normal, it only doesnt come on when the IDE cable is plugged in.

The DVD drive is set to master, this is IDE
My hard-drive is SATA so thats automatically goes to master.

The dvd drive is not detected in the BIOS ( revision 1203)

I have checked the IDE connector on the motherboard its-self and none of the pins or damaged or bent etc, I have even tried a new IDE cablr but the same happens.

Please can you help me thank you.

Preferred Solution: DVD drive not working when plug IDE cable into it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Had a similar problem moving an optical drive to the secondary IDE port on new computer a while ago. Had to change the jumper on the drive from Master to Cable Select (CS) to get it to work. It might be worth trying on your computer. You would need an IDE cable that supports CS with gray and black connectors for the drives.

I just bought a acomdata 160 gig ondago portable hard drive and plugged it in via 2 usb ports and nothing is happening on my vista laptop. The power light comes on but no 'install hard ware" prompt and nothing showing up on "my computer"
the box doesn't specfically say vista, just 98/2000/me/xp. i've unplugged, replugged and still nothing happening. The box says you must use 2 2.0 usb ports which i have done. i've "scanned for new hardware" in device manager and still nothing.

I've checked the website and there is no driver downloads except for 98.

This is probably very simple, but I can't figure it out. Iam building a system around a new Intel D955XBK motherboard, which has the integrated audio, and I cannot determine where to plug the little audio cable that connects to the CD-ROM drive. In my old system there was a port on the audio card for it.

Hi all,

I have a Linksys Wireless router WRT54G, the instructions say to click the cable from the cable modem, into the Internet port on router. What if I don't have a cable modem and I want to click a cable from the data jack on the wall into the router? Do I still plug it in the Internet port or do I click it in one of the other ports? Hello guys , i have a problem with my desktop pc and I really can't find a solution to it. Recently , I started to get dc and the only way of making it work again was to turn off my modem, wait 10 seconds and then restart the pc. Recently i was downloading a game from steam and after 3/25 gb it dc again. Troubleshooter reported 2 problems. The first with an red x stating that an ethernet cable is not properly plugged in or it might be broken (my cable is new and it works fine) and one with a yellow triangle stating that local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration. Ok so I gave up and did 2 things: first i checked my hardware. They said it works perfectly . Then I unplugged my modem thinking that this was the problem. I plugged the cable directly into my pc and had to use dial-up connection. Ok , i entered the user and pass , connected and after a few days of perfect connection i've decided to resume the download. After downloading another gb it crashed again . So out of frustration i took my pc to my friend and used his connection for the download . It worked perfectly . Now i am back home and guess what? After trying to download a large file it crashed again and now it won't even connect back. i. Have never seen something like this , it just collapses if it uses up more that 3-4 mb/s . Now the troubleshooter says the swme about the cable and the ip . My settings are to obtain an automatic ip ... My driver is fine , my cable is fine , wireless on laptop wor... Read more

A:Plug an ethernet cable into this computer ????

I would first try power cycling both the modem and router. unplug both and wait about a minute; then plug the modem back in first; and let that boot; then plug the router back in and let it boot. Also, check for a firmware upgrade for your router. If there is one; download and install it. Once that is done.I would go into the device manager in the control panel and uninstall any either net related connections and or devices. Any onboard network cards; uninstall them and let reboot and let windows hopefully detect it and reinstall the proper drivers, etc for it. Try any or all of these things and see if they help ya out any.

Can I plug in the power cable to a sata drive (already connected to sata port on mobo), while the computer is on.

With that drive connected Windows will not boot (I never have had a problem with the drive before, even when installing windows). If I remember right, a few years ago, I moved the pagefile to that drive, and it also had a boot.ini file on it (for some reason) I wonder if that is the problem (never until now), because when that drive is installed windows hangs at starting windows.

A:Plug in a sata power cable

If the SATA controller is set to AHCI mode, and the SATA port the drive is on is set to allow "hot-swap", then yes you could. If not, then no you can't.

You should post a screenshot of your Disk Management window with the problem drive connected. Expand the window so everything can be read.

is this a bug or there is something wrong with the HDMI?

No other HDMI device (monitor/TV) to test? Tried a different cable? It could be the TV not detecting it until it gets the hand shake by plugging the cable in.

Hello,
I am having trouble with the prongs where the power cable is plugged in on the back of the tower. The computer does not come on unless I jiggle the prongs. The computer stays on just fine, then, so long as I don't turn it off. If I have to turn it off, then to get it on the next time, I have to jiggle the prongs again. I have already replaced the power cord, so I know it's not that. Have you ever heard of this happening? Is it possible to replace this part?
Thank you for your help! Maggie

That power cable goes into the power supply. If the cable is good, there is something wrong with the prongs of the power supply. Do you have a spare to swap to confirm?

Hi!

I'm having trouble connecting to the internet with my Acer Aspire laptop using an ASDL cable coming from a router.

The account username and password are set up. When I insert the ADSL ethernet cable in to my laptop, and click 'Connect' in the dial up box, it goes through the dialling, check password etc, and in 2 seconds, I am online, and it shows as connected in the bottom right of the screen, with the speed (100Mps).

Then, my laptop just freezes. The mouse won't move, and everything is frozen. not even the Ctrl Alt Del works. I've left it at least 20 minutes and nothing happens so I have to reset. On re-startup, it goes to a blue screen and prompts to run a file check of FAT 32(?).

Have tried this a few times, all with the same result. I usually connect via WIFI at home, but I am in Beijing for 2 weeks, using a friends internet cable. Works fine on his laptop (this one- ThinkPad X41) so not the internet thats causing the problem. Have connected to the interent via cable before in England with no such probs (although that was with a USB cable - not sure if that makes any difference?)

If anyone could help, I'd be so grateful - really need my laptop. I'm using Windows XP, and have the basic Norton Security service that comes on a free trial basis with most new laptops.

Thanks in hope...

Richie.

I have a laptop that i received from my father about 5 months or so, it's pretty old because it was the vista model and I usually play games like LoL, SC Brood war, Warcraft 3 and Osu. Today I was using my laptop and i went away to clean my pet's cage then when i came back, my screen was black unnaturally. I thought that it was just some random problem that wasn't really that harmful until I tried turning the computer back up again with surprising results. When I booted the laptop again it took me to the screen where you got to chose whether you can solve what the problem was that made the computer suddenly shut down or just boot regularly. I tried to ust boot it up regularly when suddenly it rebooted again. It repeated this process about 5 times when I had enought and got a bit frustrated and slapping my laptop. It then showed up bluescreens for the next 4 hours or so. I plugged everything out that was on the laptop, my Blue Snowball microphone, Royche Optical mouse, ethernet cable and my Sony Stereo Headphones MDR- XD200. Finally after a bit when the bluescreens and blackscreens didn't appear I quickly went otn the website to search this up and also went on my anti-virus programs to clear any malwares or viruses. I don't know what's wrong with my laptop, and I don't know if my laptop will act weird again if i plug in my accessories.

A:Bluescreen when I plug in ethernet cable, anything in USB ports etc

Just out of curiosity, are you connected 24/7 as for dsl line, or are you dial-up, and do you plug in the ethernet cable while the system is live, or do you do it while the system is turned off.

Plug in the cable while the system is turned off, or reboot your computer with the cable connected. When the OS reboots, it should be able to detect that the cable is not disconnected from the ethernet hardware and boot successfully.

You should also check the ethernet card mfg website for an up-to-date driver for your ethernet card to make sure it has the latest driver.

Hope this helps,

I need my wireless router several more feet away than one cable will allow. One computer plugs in, and one is wireless; so that means I would need 2 or 3 ethernet cables plugged into the router. I have one very long cable so I was thinking I could run it to the wireless router where I need it, and have the non-wireless router by the computer that needs to be plugged in and run a cable from that to the computer as well as have the long cable plugged in and run that to the wireless router. Make sense? Would that work?

The machine powers on and I get a display, but the optimal viewing resolution (the monitor has a little popup message that says 1440x900) is not available as an option when I go into display settings.
When I look in device manager, the monitor is listed as a generic plug/play device. Do I need to manually install a driver from teh manufacturer? Previously, when just plugging the monitor directly to the machine with no cable the display looked fine, but now it doesn't look as good.

thanks,

You'd be better of with a long high quality cable then using an extension.

Yes, install the drivers from the manufactures website. These will help your GPU set the correct resolution.

Hello all, This is an ASUS P5P43TD-Pro socket 775 Q8400, latest BIOS release. Works normally in all known other aspects. Windows 7 Enterprise, x64. 16GB memory. BIOS settings all "auto", i.e. no OC or anything of the sort. On-board LAN, Serial, parallel, IEEE all disabled. NVidia 220 video card, also set for defaults. There are six internal SATA ports (native ICH10R), with five fixed internal drives connected. The sixth port goes to an external SATA tray intended for hot-plugging bare drives. The BIOS does not distinguish between fixed and removable drives as some newer BIOSs permit. All you get to set is IDE emulation or AHCI. The drives are all set for AHCI to enable hot-swapping. The SATA driver in Windows is the Intel RST recommended by ASUS for this board. I have not allowed it to update to more recent versions. All this stuff basically works, but there's one screwy problem I can't seem to resolve. Out of the four drives that typically get hot-plugged into the external bay, three of them work exactly as you'd expect them to. The OS detects them and mounts them with a drive letter (H:, which is the next in line). No problem. ONE of the four drives causes this weird problem where it actually causes a dismount of one of the fixed drives. Not only a dismount, but it disappears from the list of devices too. And to make it even stranger, the new drive mounts with the correct drive letter (H), even though it knocks off the drive designated E! A... Read more

A:Hot-plug external drive = forcibly dismounts internal drive. Why??

That's a first time hearing an issue like that, I am puzzled as well, I'd look at BIOS settings and drivers as cause or bad drive electronics on the ONE.

Is there something different about that one?

I would have your co. pay for another drive in that situation and probably perform destruction procedures on the one not working, or DoD procedures to wipe it if it's under warranty before RMA'n it.

She's running Windows 7 on a Gateway ZX4971 and we use a NETGEAR n450 for WiFi.

My Macbook and both of our phones can still connect to our WiFi perfectly fine, it's just her desktop having the issue.

I ran Start>Run>cmd>ipconfig /all and this is what came up:

I've restarted our NETGEAR n450, unplugged it completely from power and plugged it back in, and restarted her computer but nothing has worked. I ran a Malwarebytes scan and removed some bad files but that didn't solve anything either.

Advice?

*Edit:
I've done this and everything checks out fine:
Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.

Also, I've run DriverUpdate from Slimware Utilities, Inc. but the scan reports that "Your system has the latest stable drivers and updates installed."

A:No Internet Connection/"Plug in an Ethernet cable" message after random restart.

Easiest solution - try a different ethernet cable. Yes they do go bad.

Next attempt, move the cable from the slot it is in, in the router, to a different slot. Yes, those slots also can go bad.

Harder, it is possible the NIC (ethernet card has died). In that case, you'd see what empty slots the computer has, buy a card, install it and plug into that.

I just had a poster on another forum who bought a new card for $15 and his computer which wasn't connecting, is now working fine.

I have an HP a6600f Intel Pentium Dual CPU 64 bit operating system with a NVIDIA nForce Ethernet card and Netgear Wireless-G Router for the Toshiba laptop. My internet connection has been working just fine on BOTH computers. Recently, JUST THE HP will not connect to the internet saying "plug a cable into the network adapter local area connection". I have tried various repairs to diagnose where the issue is occurring and think it might be something to do with an HP update that may have messed something up or a driver issue?!?! After taking the router out of the loop, trying a new ethernet cable, etc...I'm thinking either drivers, port or card?!?! I have Windows Vista and have searched various forums and tried several "solutions" to no avail. Any ideas?!?! I am communicating thru my laptop's internet connection so I am limited to the "Diagnose&Repair" options on my HP (with NO INTERNET CONNECTION).

-ruled out router issue
-tried different ethernet cords
-researched error in System Diagnostics Report (Microsoft 6to4 adapter is reporting "tv_configMgrErr31")
-unchecked ipv6 internet protocol
-several restarts
-Network Sharing Center - checked properties of "local area connection"

Having trouble with some websites. I think it's plug-ins. I've tried to lower security level and prompt for ActiveX, but they are still not working.

Examples would be http://www.toyota.com/byt/pub/init.do?zip_code=01564&series_id=
Once I click on a vehicle, the next page only shows a gray bar in the middle with Model, Options, Colors, and Accessories. There is nothing else. I went to the "help" section on their site and downloaded all the items requested, still nothing. Another is www.weather.com. I cannot play any of the videos on that site.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi All

I have a very frustrating problem following a fresh install of windows XP which I did to downgrade from Vista.

When I try to play audio files on any embedded WMP plug ins within IE 8 they simply dont play, they play button is greyed out, and also if I try to press stop, my browser freezes totally and I have to restart IE. I work from home on a particular site, the page which I am viewing auto refreshes, and the WMP plug-in should auto play, however it doesn't!!

I have reinstalled the chipset drivers, and I have also reinstalled the audio drivers, but to no avail.

I have tried to compare my WMP settings with a machine that does play the plug-ins, the main difference I can see is that my version of WMP does not have a 'Network' tab within options - is this a possible issue???

I have an nVIDIA HD Audio Chip set; and Conext Audio 221 HD Audio sound drivers

WMP 11 plays all types of audio normally and video also - if I use the WMP plug in firefox the files play fine, but this is not a suitable fix for me as the site I work on is not 100% compatible with firefox

Help me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just got a new computer with Windows Vista. I have tried plugging in a table microphone to the front mic jack and also the one at the back. Neither works. In the Device manager I found I have the following recording device (SPDIF) High Definition Audio Device which it says is working properly. The mic it says is not working. Disabling the SPDIF does not make the mic work. Any suggestions on how to get the mic to function. It is just dead. I have plugged in external speakers in the speaker jack and those work properly. With my old computer which had XP I successfully used the same mic and speakers every day to make internet telephone calls. Thank you.

A:plug in mic not working

Try – Control Panel – Speech Recognition Options.
Go to – Advanced Speech Options (top left)

On Speech Properties box – Click - Audio Input
Under –Sound, Recording tab.

Highlight – Microphone/Line In- listed. The bar line meter to the right, may give you an indication if there is any input from your mic.
If no level is indicated, click Properties.

Under, Microphone Line In Properties – Levels. Increase mic line in, and boost to max.

Under the Advance tab, try alternative sample rates in the drop down listing, to find a quality that suits your microphone.

Fine adjustment to these settings may be required to obtain a suitable level and quality.
Also you might be required to enable and set either one of these inputs as a default. connection

Hope this may help.

I am having a problem with my plug and play monitor. I can't get monitor 2 enabled. I go into display properties and I try and set it up, but it is identifying both monitors as monitor 1. When I go to click on extend my image to monitor 2 and I hit apply it doesn't save it. Then I do it again and just hit ok and it doesn't save it. I don't know why it's doing this and what I can do to fix it, please help. I work from home and I am losing money as I am typing.

Hey, guys.

I have a pretty standard plug & play mic, which I know is in full working order, as it works on my friends P2. I have a P4, running Windows XP, and It has worked on here before, but now, it will not work. I know positively, that it is plugged into the correct port, as there is a picture of a microphone on it.

Is there anything I can do In windows to get it working?

the sound card in the computer is a Live! Creative.
any help or suggestions is very appreciated, thanks.

Whenever I plug a device into my USB ports, the balloon on the bottom right of the taskbar will pop up saying "Found New Hardware" and it correctly identifies the device, but doesn't install the driver. Instead, the "Found New Hardware" box will pop up, asking me to find the driver to install. This can be a pain (especially if the driver cannot be found online) However, older devices that I have previously installed on this machine before this started happeinging work fine when plugged in.

Here are the steps I have taken in an attempt to fix this problem:
1. Making sure plug and play is enabled
2. deleting the infcache.1
3. making sure HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion 'DevicePath' points to '%SystemRoot%\inf
4. making sure the values 'FactoryPreInstallInProgress' and 'AuditInProgress' are set to '1' under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup
5. making sure HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup 'AuditInProgress' is set to "0"
6. making sure HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup 'FactoryPreInstallInProgress' is set to "0"
7. making sure HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup 'MiniSetupInProgress' is set to "0" (this key doesn't exist on my machine)
8. making sure HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup 'Setuptype' is set to "0"
9. making sure HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup 'SystemSetupInProgress' is set to "0"
10. deleting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Factory
11. deleting sysprep (I couldn't find it on my machine, so I assume it's not on there)

I recently purchased a Kodak Series 3 Printer Dock. I installed Kodak's Easyshare s/w which contains the drivers for this printer and then plugged the printer into my Dell Dimension 2400 (XP Home) USB port on the back of the computer.

The USB port went live and then the new hardward wizard launched. It then said it was looking for the software to install the printer dock. When I looked in the device manager it showed the printer dock as an "other" device.

Later, I put a MEMOREX TD jump drive into the Dimension 2400 and had the exact same problem.

However, my Dell Jukebox worked just fine.

Any thoughts on how to get the dock / jump drive working?

Go to the Dell site and put in the service tag number on side of tower when you select support and downloads and download any new chipset drivers and/or usb driver updates.

Hi,

I bought a new USB 3.0 switch to use my mouse and keyboard and both of my computers. On my MacBook the switch is working perfectly, but the windows computer only recognizes the devices if they are connected while the pc is booting. If i disconnect any usb device while the pc is running and try to reconnect it, it does not get recognized. I checked that the upnp service is running and the drivers for the usb ports are up to date.

Any idea where the cause for this problem may be?

Greetings Franz

A:Plug and Play is not working

In Windows, use the Safely Remove Icon in the Task Bar by the Clock. If you fail to do so, the next time you plug in the device it may not get recognized.
In Windows, you can also go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc, right click the devmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Device Manager, if you see a device with a Yellow flag, or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, and Unknown Device, then Right click it and Uninstall it. Even if you don't have any flags in Device Manager, Right click any device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes, this should recognize your device and reinstall it.
Also If the USB hub has it's own power adapter, be sure to plug the power into the wall socket directly and not through a power strip or extension cord as this may diminish the power. Also, on the Windows machine, plug the USB cable into the Back USB port of the computer and not the front as this may diminish the power.

After a storm we had (we lost power but my laptop remained on with battery) i find none of my USB devices are working. When i plug in my mouse for example, the lazer does not come on and I immediately get a pop up saying "usb device not recognized: one of the usb devices attached to this comptuer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it". THe same is true for my printer. I have gone into the control panel and uninstalled anything usb related and upon reboot, the drivers are reinstalled but the device still doesnt work. I am running XP but it seems my system restore was not on so I cant restore back to an earlier time. The laptop is a presario2100 and i would appreciate any help you guys can provide. THere is nothing in the device manager with a red x or an exclamation point...only an unknown device listed under usb which disappears when i unplug the mouse or printer.
