I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When i try to play flash games, such as miniclip or addictinggames, my letter keys don't work unless i hold down CTRL and press the key at the same time. however my arrow keys work regardless. im using google chrome but it doesn't seem to work on firefox either.

A:Keyboard letter keys not working in flash

Chrome has the Flash Player built in. Make sure Chrome is up to date. FF requires you to update the Flash Player. Make sure you have the latest version for XP. Some people have chosen to play Flash Games with a controller rather than the keyboard.

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

Hi chelemww ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would your laptop work using any external usb mouse and keyboard?

Try to turn off the laptop and use the novo button ((item 3 page 11-12) to turn back on?
This would show a Novo Menu , try using the up and down arrow keys and highlight BIOS setup.
Press enter and press f9 to load defaults f10 to save and exit .
Would the keys respond?

If you need further assistance , you can visit any nearest service center like (Best Buy tech team) or your company IT or if the warranty is still up to call in technical support  1-877-453-6686  24 hours a day 7 days/week

Hi all,

I have a problem with win7. The keyboard stopped working form one day to anohter*. In the BIOS it works fine. When I use a Linux partition (starting from DVD, "Knoppix") it works also fine. Also at bootloader leval its ok.
But at Win7 it stopps working. Does not matter which keyboard I use -USB or PS/2.

The USB driver works propperly. Interesting is that the PS/2 driver does NOT work propperly (Error Reason Code 10).

I am at the end of my know how.

Any help is highly recomened.

*I have to mention that yesterday my PC had some BDOS (Sudden blue deaths) at booting (reason unknown - looks like a memory issue). Win7 start some self reparation (?), I assume, after that the KB stopped working.

Test with a different keyboard. Then you will know if you have a keyboard or PC issue. Assuming a different keyboard works, I'd speculate that keyboard is faulty. It happens.

Howdy,

My keyboard stopped working this morning.( I am using my laptop now) I checked the connection to my PC and it is fine. I rebooted but that was no help.

Just prior to the problem I would get a screen regarding Microsoft Narrator. The screen referenced settings from text to speech, etc;. I had no idea there was such a function in XP Home never mind turning it on.Apparently it is for those visually impaired. I tried to exit from the program several times but it would pop up every time I tried to type on the keyboard. I finally clicked on 'do not show this screen again'. Now I get nothing when I try to use the keyboard.

I am not sure if the above program is my problem or not.

Any help would be appreciated.
Dennis XP Home, IE-8, SP
Edit: I figured out how to exit narrator. The keyboard still does not work.

Forgive a silly question, but have you tried a different keyboard? Or try the keyboard you have with a different system. Let's rule out the obvious first.

Hi,
One fine day the metallic base of my keyboard starting giving off a mild shock so i opened it up and wiped the base dry. After putting it back together again though the shocks stopped, the keyboard has stopped functioning

I did take care to put all the underlying rubber-domes to their respective keys and I 've opened the keyboard a number of times after that to ensure that, but it hasn't worked at all.

Can you suggest what may be wrong?

Thank you.

A:Keyboard's stopped working

Sounds like something blown or incorrectly put back together. open it again and put it back to its original state and if it doesn't work, get a new one.

I have a Pavilion x2, which is a tablet that connects to a keyboard to turn into a laptop. The problem I'm having right now is that when I connect the tablet to the keyboard, it won't type anything. Pressing the space bar wakes the computer up and the trackpad still works, so it's not physically broken. It just won't type.

Restarting does nothing. There are no crumbs and I haven't spilled anything on it. It's not Sticky Keys. All the ticky boxes are unticked. Removing the tablet then putting it back works for a second - long enough to type one or two letters - but that's a really inefficient way to write a novel. I'm not running any background tasks, or doing anything but using Chrome. I can't do a system restore, which is a whole other problem I'll worry about later.

Dear all,
These (MJU7NHY6) keys in my laptop dell (Inspiron 11-3000 series) keyboard stopped working this May 13. They wouldn’t function unless pressed so hard. I bought laptop last year and it's new.
The onscreen keyboard is working fine. I updated the keyboards driver but it didn’t help. I’m not aware of any liquid that may have spilled over the keyboard. Maintenance shops where I'm seem they can’t help. Some said would give it a try and remove the keyboard to see if they can identify and solve the problem but said that there’s a chance it may screw up the whole keyboard. Please advise what to do. Enclosed is a snapshot of the keys in questions.
I appreciate your advice.

As of yesterday when I choose to boot XP the NumLock light goes out immediately and when the desktop appears the keyboard does not work (but the mouse is OK). Device Manager says the driver was loaded OK.
If I boot from Windows 7 the keyboard works perfectly so it's not a hardware problem.

Hi, and welcome to TSF. It might be worth subbing another keyboard, but it's more likely just to rule the keyboard out as the problem. If you hit the "delete" key at boot, will the keyboard work in the bios? or will it not get you there? Alternately, you could try using a USB keyboard, but that may not work until enabled in the bios, which you might not be able to get access to. Try to access the bios though, and if "delete" don't get it, try the F-10 key, since we're dealing with a Compaq. If you can get to the bios, try setting the defaults, and save and exit. If the keyboard exhibits not problems at all accessing and navigating bios, then through the mouse, navigate to the device manager in windows, and delete the keyboard. Then rebooting should force a hardware detection, and restore the keyboard. This keyboard isn't wireless is it??????

Goodday Gurus!!!

I have just started up my Sony vaio desktop. The keyboard works in bios, but when i access windows xp, it stops working. I plug it into another usb ports, while windows was adding in drivers such as the "USB Human Interface Device", the keyboard was working. After windows finishes adding in the drivers, the keyboard stopped working. My mouse is working though. I access device manager, systems. and I see that the USB Human Interface driver for the keyboard is there, but under the keyboard category, it doesn't show any keyboard installed. I tried another keyboard, same case. Anybody any ideas?

Oh one more thing, when i ran my ubuntu O/S, it works for the keyboard and mouse.

Hope to hear from someone!

Thanks!

A:Keyboard stopped working!

Is there a driver for the keyboard that you can download and install?
Is it a keyboard with lots of buttons on it?

In the meantime if you need to enter characters, XP has a virtual kybd:
C:\Windows\system32\osk.exe

You could try to uninstall the human interface device from device manager,
or also do a system restore to go back a few days before the problem started.

Yesterday my keyboard stopped working out of the blue. It works in set up mode (at the very beginning you can hit one of the "F" keys and it will take you to setup ,etc.) but once it gets to log on, it won't work. When you check the keyboard hardware, it shows HID with a yellow exclamation point and mentions something about error 38. I am not that computer literate. Is there any simple way to try to fix this? I have a Dell Dimension 510.

This appears to be a device driver for your keyboard.

Look at this link: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/915164-solved-keyboard-not-working-error.html

You may want to try the following:

1. Unistall your keyboard.

2. Reboot.

3. Reinstall.

I have verified that the keyboard is working on another PC.

I had intended to use the on-screen keyboard to investigate the problem further, once Windows had loaded, but her account has a password and I cannot get past this screen without a keyboard!. Is it possible to by-pass the log in screen? Also any ideas about sorting out the keyboard problem if I can get into her account.

After some tests with a text editor, I shut down the system, then powered back on. The keyboard was still unresponsive. Rebooting, I am not able to get into the BIOS with keystrokes. I went to boot using a Linux distro and similar boot utilities, and the keyboard was unresponsive for these. This 'feels' like a hardware issue, 4 months after purchase. The keyboard lights up, but absolutely no keys are responsive.

Today the laptop booted and i couldnt type my password or move the cursor, i plugged in a usb mouse and i was able to move the cursor. i got the on screen keyboard up and logged in.

Then i went to Device Manager, both the keyboard and mouse have the Exclamation mark next to them. So i figure somethings gone wrong with the driver. (Vista may have auto updated since last turn on)

Vista scanned the net and said my drivers were up to date. i then uninstalled and rebooted, with the same outcome. So i went to Samsung

i downloaded the driver for Vista "touchpad" unzipped and run setup.exe. it then said it updated the pointer device and restarted, but i still have the same fault. Does anyone know whats happened and how to get it back.

Just for extra info, i also have Linux Mint Julia on this laptop and ive booted this up and everything works ok, god i hate vista lol.

I have a PC with a K6-2 400mhz CPU on a Biostar M5ALA motherboard with a ALi chipset, 128mb of RAM, 10.2 GB HD running Windows ME. Today I opened up the case & added 128mb more of RAM, made sure that worked, then added a new video-card. After I installed the new video-card, with the case still off, I tested it & everything worked okay.

So I unplugged everything, put the case back on, & hooked everything back up. I had trouble getting the keyboard to plug in, but it went it. I turned the system back on & found that both the keyboard & the mouse had stopped working.

I shut it down & removed both, found that the keyboard pins were bent. Mouse pins were fine. I had put the keyboard plug into the correct socket, too. So I went to the store & bought a new keyboard & mouse, brought them both home, installed them---and they didn't work. Again, I made sure that both the keyboard & the mouse were plugged into the correct sockets.

The mouse was a USB/serial port mouse, so I plugged it into a USB port instead--it worked. Under Device Manager, I could see the system registering a keyboard. No yellow exclamation points. Everything looked normal.

So I borrowed a working keyboard from my neighbor and tried it--nothing. So I used the Start-Up disk to boot into DOS & the keyboard still didn't work, nor did the mouse.

So I shut down, removed the new RAM I had installed, started it up again after taking the Start-Up disk out, and while it c... Read more

Last night my HP laptop was working just fine with zero issues. Today I turned it on and my keyboard didn't work and also saying that no battery was detected.

Now if I turn it on with a power cord attached I can remove the power cord and the laptop stays turned on, I can also shut the lid and the laptop will stay powered on. However if I use the shut down function or turn it off by the power switch it will not power back up without the power cord attached.

The keyboard just refuses to work none of the keys work. No fn key no alt key no ctrl key nothing. I can't turn wireless on or off using the F key, however the on-screen keyboard works fine, and so does a keyboard that is plugged in through usb.

I have checked the drivers which says it is working properly, I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling, which didn't fix it.

I Googled this problem and read that a bios update might fix this, I updated it and nothing as well as doing the usual virus and malware scans with the likes of malwarebytes and MSE.

Any help would be great thanks.

A:Laptop Keyboard just stopped working

LamerJoe,

I am led to believe that BIOS is not the culprit here, I think you are receiving an internal power malfunction and it is disrupting the internal keyboard function. So, to see if this works, I would like you to unplug the power cable, remove the battery for around five-ten minutes, replace the battery, then plug the power cord in, and reboot the laptop and test the keyboard.

Please, re-post if you still have issues.

i have the Envy x2 and my touch pad keyboard has stopped working. The charge light wont come on when its plugged in, no lights are blinking when attached to the tablet.  And yes the switch is on, on the keyboard.  i have flipped it on and off quite a few times.  I've restarted it many times as well. I did download some new Sims 3 games which has affected my display when i play from time to time, but i wouldnt think it'd affect the keyboard... Today the keyboard did start working again after a week of being detatched, until i shut the tablet down and now back at square one. any help will nbe greatly appreciated!!!!Thank you!

My chromebook's keyboard will not work after 2 months.  Maybe there is a setting that I have to deal with?

A:chromebook 11 keyboard stopped working after 2 mon...

Try booting into recovery mode to see if the keyboard works when the OS isn't yet loaded. If that works then maybe a quick power wash will clear it up.
