I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

For some strange reason, the brightness doesn't appear to be increasing or decreasing anymore. Whether I try it from the FN key function, or the power options and even under settings on the right swipe menu, the brightness on the monitor is not changing. I trying rebooting, but that didn't help either. I'm runing an acer aspire ES1-512-C1W0 with Windows 8.1 64bit 4GB RAM. Any ideas what's wrong?

HP does not post Windows 8 drivers for that laptop just 7 and 10. Check device manager and see what is showing for display adapter. If it is Microsoft Basic brightness adjustment will not work. I suspect you need quite a few drivers for it which we are going to have to help you get from hardware manufacturer sites.  Post back with identity of display adapter.

A:Probook 450 fn + brightness not working

Did you just install Windows 7 on it or had the brightness key been working and just stopped? The brightness adjustment depends on the video driver and also on the Hotkey Support driver here: http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdHome/?sp4ts.oid=5359407&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3DswEnvOID%253D4058%257CswLang%253D%257Caction%253DlistDriver&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken So I would reinstall the Intel chipset driver, the video (AMD or Intel) and the Hotkey driver and see if it clears up the problem. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5555 that I purchased today from the Microsoft Store.  The computer works great, but I've noticed that when I try to change the brightness using the brightness keys (F11 and F12) to adjust the brightness, they don't work.  I did get it to brighten up the screen once, but after doing that, I have been unable to make any changes.  Has anyone seen this and does anyone know something I can do or try to see if I can make these keys work?

A:Brightness Keys not working

The F keys toggle between Media and normal functions by using the FN key. Try using the FN key with the brightness F key--which is not necessarily F11 or F12. Check your manual. The sun symbols on the Function keys might tell you where the brightness settings are. On my model it is F3 & 4.

You can reverse the toggle settings to make the function you use most the default. The default doesn't use the FN key.

Hi, Try the following. Download the Intel HD Graphics driver on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp69501-70000/sp69589.exe When done, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the link below. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp69501-70000/sp69575.exe When this has completed, do not restart the notebook as prompted, instead open your Downloads folder, right click the Intel HD Graphics package and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

I seen all the past replies on fixing this problem. One even said HP enables the keys f1-f12 eventually. Even so, I brought this notebook just last Christmas '15.  Here's the rub,  Microsoft installed some updates recently, since then the f2 & f3 for bbrightness are the only f-keys enabled. Not all users are young, these keys are a must for seniors who are on computers and eyes aren't what they use to be. I even downloaded the driver again for this and still not workng. Should I take it back to store? Still under warrenty.

Hi. Thanks for any suggestion or advice you can provide.
I have been using Windows 7 on M6600 for a while. it mostly worked besides I was getting "Nvidia Kernel Mode Driver has stopped responding and has recovered issue" at times and I had no choice but to reboot to make it work again, that is for a while...
When windows 8.1 became available via corporate, I got hold of it and decided to reinstall fresh.
I saved all my data and wiped out windows and recovery partitions, leaving dell system partition.
Windows 8.1 install was amazingly fast, 15 mins. As soon as I booted I installed Dell chipset driver, video drivers and other drivers. All device manager entries were with no warnings, some drivers were found and some I installed from Dell site. I installed most critical programs and all was cool and working. Nvidia video driver crash seems to be gone too. I have 2 other windows 8 machines so my windows 8 experience was there and I am quite happy with everything in windows 8.1
Then eventually I noticed that LCD brightness does not work. I made sure I had Dell Intell HD 3000 driver, Dell Nvidia driver and Dell feature pack installed. I tried with Dell feature pack and without it.
I researched this topic, found some other reference to Windows 8 having the same issue. I do have 3 monitors and do run Optimus. this all worked very well in windows 7.
Some posts suggested that it is critical to install drivers in order. I started doubting my install proce... Read more

A:fn+brightness not working on windows 8.1 on M6600

SOLVED. By installing latest HD3000 driver from Intel, then create a HD3000Fix.Reg file with these entries, open file or apply in Windows RegEdit (be careful as usual), then reboot:
----------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000]
"FeatureTestControl"=dword:0000ffff

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001]
"FeatureTestControl"=dword:0000ffff

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\intelkmd]
"FeatureTestControl"=dword:0000ffff
----------------------------------
I've been using this for two years for each time Intel updates the HD3000 drivers and it works well for Windows 8.0 and Windows 8.1 on two different PCs including Precision 6600 with Intel HD3000 video.

Hope this helps others...

Hi,

I have the same problem: some of my function keys are not working.

My device is a HP zbook studio g3 with model number T7V83ES.

I did a clean install of 10 education since i could get that one for free and my previous version was enterprise. The keys worked on enterprise although I had some issues with it before only I forgot how to fix it. More people at my university that have the same laptop are experiencing the same problems, unfortunately this is not the case for everyone that owns the same laptop.

Here's what I did and what it resulted in:

-Installed every driver/program that seemed appropriate and was listed on the original  HP website for software and drivers for my device.
Result: My keys were not working at all. (brightness, project switch and mic mute keys)

-I asked google and tried every single solution I could find, including the ones you suggested.
Result: Mic mute key is working, project switch key is also working, and as if it was a miracle my brightness keys are also working! But: my brightness keys are stuttering like hell. It takes windows ages to register my keystroke and even longer to register another one directly following it; it can not register 2 keystrokes in a row, it needs a sort of cooling down time for the button.

I take it that when you notice this, restarting the notebook corrects the problem every time? I am not suggesting this as a solution(sometimes i would rather see the dentist than have to restart one of my PCs) but I want to make sure that this isn't a hardware issue.
When you notice the problem with the brightness keys try holding down FN when pressing them and see if there is a change.
As another test go into Windows and change the power plan and change it to "high performance" before hibernating the notebook. Before resuming plug in the AC adapter and see if you are now able to adjust the brightness, if you are able to then this becomes less of a problem with the function key behavior and an issue with power management.

The brightness hotkeys used to be functioning correctly. After updating the Hotkey Support driver from (pre-installed) version 6.2.20.8 Rev.A the secondary screen and brightness function keys stopped functioning. I reset the device to factory settings after running a hardware diagnostic on the keyboard using the built-in hardware diagnostic utility. The function keys worked again. I updated Windows 10 with the latest available updates. The keys still worked. I updated all the HP drivers (except the Hotkey Support application) to the latest version using the pre-installed HP SoftPaq program. The function keys still worked. I created a system restore point. I then updated the Hotkey application to the latest version after which the keys stopped functioning. I uninstalled the latest version and installed version 6.2.20.8 Rev.A again, but the function keys did not work. I ran a system restore to the system restore point I created earlier and the keys worked again. Apparently something is wrong with the installation of the Hotkey Support application, causing it to not work. I hope this issue can be routed to the appropriate team and that it will be investigated.

Good morning, I am lucky enough to have a shiny new ZBook 15u G3 which has a clean W10 install.  Lovely machine but I am expriencing some niggles with the hotkeys, specifically brightness (f5,f6) and I am not sure whether mic mute is working either (f10).  Keyboard backlights are fine (f3) as is volume (f8,f9). I ran the HP SoftPaq download manager to find all the specific drivers for this machine and while the HP Hotkey Support software seemed to be included in the bundle, it did not install. I have tried downloading and installing it separately but  keep getting this error message:  The file does exist, and I have tried running it directly from the 'Progam Data' folder but get the same error.  Finally I tried copying the msi file directly to the desktop which seemed to let it install i.e. it is listed in 'Programs and Features' but the functionality is still missing. I have also tried updating to the latest bios. I can change the brightness in the display settings and can increment in 25% steps in the action centre but it is not the same as just being able to tap a button.  This was an expensive machine and I am somewhat frustrated that this basic functionality that I require regularly is absent. Our IT guys are currently out of ideas, so any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.
