Z510 Crashes While Plugged In

Q: Z510 Crashes While Plugged In

I have had a horrible experience with Lenovo customer support, and am looking for advice. My Lenovo Z510 started crashing only while plugged in, and of course this happened shortly after the warranty expired. Because it was out of warranty, I didn't bother calling Lenovo. I tried everything I could think of, replaced the fan, replaced the A/C adapter, replaced the heat sink and reapplied new thermal paste. I updated all of my drivers, and the system BIOS. I even took my computer into a repair place, and they couldn't determine what the issue was but offered to slowly start replacing things until the issue was fixed. This seemed expensive and a big risk, so I didn't pursue this. But the problem persists. I recently found on a Lenovo forum that this had happened to multiple people, and the problem was a bad motherboard. Because of this, I decided to call Lenovo customer support. The person I originally spoke with confirmed that he had also found several forums that showed Z510s had a faulty motherboard, and said because of this it was likely that despite being out of warranty they would still be able to fix my computer. He escalated my case, and several days later I got an email from Lenovo simply stating my computer was out of warranty. I emailed them back asking if they would be willing to fix it because of the known issue, and never heard back. A month later I called Lenovo, asking why I had never heard back, and they gave me a cookie cutter response that I needed to go to a local repair person, and that my computer was out of warranty. The person finally said he would send my case back to upper management since they had not responded to my original concerns. Once again, I haven't heard anything and it has been weeks. What options do I have? I would have expected more from a computer company I have heard so highly about. Is it time to replace my expensive, and only several year old computer? I am annoyed with Lenovo to say the least.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have an ideapad z510 which I have been using without any problems for the last 2 and a half years or so. For the last few weeks, it won't turn on if it's unplugged: the lights under the keyboard turn on for a brief moment, so does the power button, but then it all stops. When I plug it in, the first time I press the button it doesn't turn on either (same behaviour as when unplugged) but on the second attempt it turns on propperly. Once running, I can unplug it and it will keep working propperly.  What could be going wrong? How could I fix it?  For your interest: I cannot (easily) remove the battery, in case that matters.  Thank you for your help Leo

A:ideapad Z510 - turns on only if plugged in

Hi leocasasola,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can start with the power check out guide from the hardware manual (page 21-22) testing on the integrity of the AC adapter and operational charging to isolate.

Further steps may require certain tools and skill as board level checking (power board , systemboard ports and chips etc.), so it would be best that you take time to back up your data while you can and check on your local service center.

I have a Lenovo Z510 laptop which turns off randomly while plugged in. It started intially only while playing games but then happened even while watching videos and browsing. Each time the interval got shorter and in the last stage it turned off the moment I inserted the charger pin. This never happens when its on battery so it not a overheating issue. I tried changing the charging adapter but it did not go away so I figured charger is not the problem. Then as a final solution got my Motherboard replaced and it went away but only for a month. Now even with a new mother board it randomly turns off while watching a video. Im really perplexed as to what could be the reason of such shutdowns. I really need to figure it out so it can replaced under warranty.

A:Lenovo Z510 random shutdown while plugged in

Hi vinayk23 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There was a BIOS update for power issue on this model .
I would not however advise you to do it on your own since it may need constant ac connection and we do not want shutdowns to happen during the BIOS update as it may brick the pc .

I would rather have you call in tech support for assistance and back up your important files first for safe keep.

My Z510 has been randomly shutting down when plugged in, but doesn't have this issue when running on battery. I contacted Lenovo and they sent my a new power supply but the issue continues. I called again and they instructed me to repair-install the Lenovo power manager and do a disk check. The issue still continues. Anyone have this issue or know how to fix it? It used to happen when running something intensive like photoshop or a game and only if charging over 75%, but now it'll happen randomly. I can be sitting staring at the laptop with no programs running and it'll shut down. Z510i7HD 46008 gb mem1 tb hard driveWin 8.1

Hello, I have a 3 yr old Ideapad Z510(that came with Win8)which worked absolutely fine until recently. If I plug in the charger when the laptop is on, it abruptly turns off and would never boot again until I remove the charger. However, this is not how it behaves every time. There are some rare instances where I could still operate the machine with charger plugged in.  When turned off, battery is charging and also goes to full 100%. When turned on(battery mode) it does not drain rapidly - I could still get a fairly decent stand up time. So I am assuming the battery is good. I don't see any thermal issues either. Things I tried:-------------- > Tried with a different charger - no help.> Updated the firmware - no help.> Update the entire driver pack - no help.> Applied windows patches, reinstalled and also upgraded windows to Win 10 - no help.> Reseated the battery and associated cables - no help.  I am not sure if there is anything that I could do to at least diagonize the problem before I give it to the service station. Any pointers on this is much appreciated   Thanks much in advance.

Hello. First of all, thank you for taking the time to view my post and potentially help me out. So the problem is that my laptop will not start. I was using my laptop here one day and it was working fine, but it was unable to charge for some reason and ended up shutting down so I went to bed. The next morning I tried turning it on, but it was dead. I have tried a different charger as my sister also has a lenovo laptop, but this did not work either. I would think if the battery was the problem, the laptop should still be working with the charger in? I have tried calling support line several times with no answer, the warranty has gone out and I forgot where i bought the laptop sadly. Really frustrated over here, and any help is highly appreciated!

Recently I was transferring some files to a USB backup drive (hard drive, not flash drive) when the drive suddenly crashed. Since I wasn't able to do a soft eject, I pulled the USB plug out of the PC and the PC went back to normal.

Now whenever I plug this same drive in to this PC, it freezes. I tried it in a couple different USB jacks and same thing. I then tried a different USB drive and that one worked.

I then tried plugging the effected drive into my laptop. It had a hard time reading it, but eventually managed to open it. I ran a chkdsk on it from the laptop and it said some errors were corrected. The drive now operates smoothly on my laptop only. Plugging it into my PC (where the initial crash happened) causes the same freeze up every time.

Not sure how to proceed with fixing this issue. Anyone have any ideas/experience with this sort of thing?

My Toshiba Satellite laptop will crash on start up whenever it is plugged in. It's very odd, I've never seen anything like it before. It won't pass the POST when plugged in, and plugging in while windows is starting is a 90% chance of crashing it. I have to insert the power cable after the post and before windows starts in order for it to work with a 20% crash-chance, and even then, when logging in to windows, there's about a 35-40% chance of crashing still. When plugging in after windows is running, it's a lower chance, around 15%, but it does still happen.

Whenever not plugged in, the laptop will go from start to windows without crashing, every time.

When trying to run a startup repair, plugged in or not, it crashes before it even passes the windows loading screen. (it does pass the DOS style "loading system files screen" when unplugged).
As bothersome as this is, I just received a BSOD today, and I'm definitely not sure what to do.

Doing extensive virus scanning in case the BSOD was faked.
Things I've tried:
Checkdisk - comes back fine
System File Check - comes back with unfixable errors (sadly, no repair/install disk to simply format/reinstall)

I don't have the equipment necessary to take it apart.
Thank you muchly for your reading!

I can't find a way to edit so; An interesting bit of information, when restarting instead of a hard start, there's about a 50-60% chance it won't cause the above problems during start-up.

Hi all,

First post ever! woo

But I have a serious problem. I recently used the nVidia nTune feature in their drivers package to tune my pc. I choose the 12hr option and it mentioned that your pc may need to be restarted but that the program would continue once back in windows. Every so often you would get a blue screen error as the programme pushed the pc to its limits but it would restart fine. until...

I received the bluescreen of death with a 0x00000024 error:

STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xF79026DC, 0xF79023D8, 0xF7B9FD4F)
ntfs.sys - Address F7B9FD4F base at F7B52000 Datestamp 45cc56a7

Now the computer will not start in any mode, it mentions that i may need to run a chkdsk but i cannot even do that as I cannot load into the the OS. I have tried booting using another hard disk then attaching the old HD once XP is loaded up, but that instantly crashes the system.

The faulty disk is a SATA 250GB disk, the old one was a 20GB ATA

Does anyone have any advice, please? I have also tried booting from a USB device but to no avail. I am totally lost and really, REALLY do not want to have to reinstall winXP again!

Hi,

I have 2 problems :

1) My notebook can never shutdown when the power is being plugged in. No matter whether I try to force shutdown by pressing the on/off switch on my notebook, or even executing the shutdown.exe. It keeps restarting the notebook.

However, when I remove the power, allow the notebook to run by battery only, I have no problem shutting down. Is there anything wrong with my notebook settings? I've checked my power plans with another Vista notebook. The settings are exactly the same. Can anyone advise?

2) Windows explorer cannot click and drag. It will crash. I read about similar problems on other forum sites but dun seem to have any solution.

Can anyone help?

Thanks and regards,

As long as the laptop is running off the battery, it works perfectly.
The instant I plug in the AC adaptor, it crashes. If the laptop is turned off, the AC adaptor can be plugged in and it does charge the battery as normal.
The AC adaptor has been swapped with a new unit and this has not fixed the problem.

The issue then appears to be on the system board.
Has anyone out there experienced this and, more to the point, is the ONLY solution to buy a new system board?

A:Computer Crashes When Ethernet Is Plugged In. Virus Related.

Hello,I notice from your log that you are running more than one different Anti-Virus/firewall programs with Auto-protect enabled. CA Internet Security Suite, McAfee and AVGNever install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously! The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time. Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown. I would strongly advise you to only have one Anti-Virus with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!If you decide to only keep one Anti-Virus installed, you should uninstall the other(s) through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel. So start with that first, because that may already solve your problem. Then post a new Hijackthislog in your next reply.

My Yoga 11s laptop almost always crashes when I plug in my external Wesstern Didigital My Passport 500 GB hard drive. As soon as I plug it in, screen goes dark. It sometimes is difficult to power it back on, sometimes takes several minutes of pressing the power button. Once I reboot it, with the external drive already plugged in it's fine. Hi everyone. Fairly new laptop (less than 6 months) which recently has been crashing in a really odd way when doing certain tasks. No BSOD or anything, just straight shuts down. I use Skyrim to test it because it usually causes a crash within the first few minutes. What usually happens is I start up the game, get into gameplay (past title screen loading screen etc.), it plays fine for a few seconds then the fan will start going apebleep and the laptop completely crashes a few seconds after that.

The strange thing is this only happens under a few conditions. The battery setting has to be set to high performance and the charger has to be plugged in. The crashes never happen when the machine is running on battery alone and they still happen when I remove the battery and just run the laptop plugged in.

It doesn't seem to be an overheating issue; both cores stay around 45 degrees even when the fan starts to go crazy (max is 52 and 49). Changing chargers didn't help either, both the one that came with the laptop and a store bought one lead to crashes.

Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite s50t-B running windows 8.1

While the laptop is plugged in, closing the lid works properly (in my case, sleeps) and when the lid is subsequently opened it wakes correctly.
If I close the lid while unplugged, the laptop seems to power off hard - the front LED goes out immediately, and when I open the lid the machine boots from cold. The event viewer shows a critical Kernel Power error.
If I close the lid while plugged in, the front LED blinks - I assume this means going to sleep?, but then if I unplug power the machine powers off hard - same reboot and critical error when I open the lid.
I have 1.2.21 firmware.
Any ideas how to fix this?

Hi, I have a Yoga 14 20FY0002US running Win 10 Home. BIOS 1.49. Once in a while, the laptop will freeze if it is running on AC power. If I disconnect and reconnect the AC power, the laptop becomes responsive. I haven't detected a pattern. Naturally, if I'm at the computer, it isn't a big deal. But I use it to control a lab instrument and it needs to run experiments for hours at a time. Right now, my only "fix" is to use battery power (it hasn't frozen yet). Any solutions for this? I am VERY reluctant to update my BIOS (from 1.49 to 1.57). The last time I tried that, it bricked the laptop and had to go back for factory repair. Thanks.

I don't know whether I have a malware problem, or a hard-drive-in-death-throes problem, or what. But I figured it was best to start here, so if it's not a virus I can go over to the XP forum with that ruled out.

Over the past few months my desktop has been steadily driving me nuts. First it began giving me BSODs at random intervals, anything from a day to a month apart. (Currently, about once every three weeks.) The most common error is 0x0000008E, but I've also had 0x00000019, 0x00000024, 0x1000000A, 0x0000004E (PFN_LIST_CORRUPT), 0x0000007F, 0x0000000A (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL), and 0x00000050 (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA). Usually it crashes at startup, but it has taken as much as twenty minutes. I've tried defragging the hard drive, using a registry cleaner, and replacing Sygate firewall (see below) but nothing appears to have worked.

Then Sygate starting occasionally crashing while I was online. I replaced it with PC Tools free firewall, which hasn't had any problems. (Yet...)

Somewhere in the last several months (hard to say whether it was before or after Sygate and the BSODs, it seems to have been creeping up for a while) Firefox developed an increasing tendency to hang. It reached the point where it was basically non-functional for a good quarter hour after connecting. During that time doing anything - maximising or minimising windows, accessing the start menu - took forever. Then Firefox started crashing - constantly. I worked my way through the official trou... I am not sure if the battery is the problem, but it seems to be. When plugged in, the battery will not charge UNLESS the computer is shut down. Then it seems to charge. When turned back on, it might charge for a minute or two but then it's back to the message "plugged in, not charging." The battery life stays consistant when plugged in, it just won't charge any higher. At the moment it is stuck at 87% after dying on me this morning. I was working perfectly last night.  I have taken the battery out and turned the computer on with only the AC plugged in and it does work. My theory is it's the battery but I'm not sure.  The last thing I did was run a battery test and an AC adapter test through the UEFI menu. Both passed. Can someone please help? I am so lost on what I should do now!

A:Z510 - HDD bad sectors

Hi TheAliAkhgar ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Such warning should not be ignored as I would suggest that you immediately backup all your file on a different storage and create your recovery media as soon as possible specially that this is your work pc.

For differential diagnostics you can run Lenovo Solution Center and similar diagnostics to check possible harddrive issue.

Update us as soon as convenient.

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Z510. I got it around 3 years ago, and this year, I realized that it has been running quite slow, or slower than usual. Whenever I open a chrome tab, it would take around a minute to set it up and would lag a little when I open up multiple tabs.  This is the specs of my computer.http://tech.firstpost.com/product/laptops/ideapad-z510-59-387061-specification-348262.html So, I was wondering, if I were to add more ram to my computer, would it fix this problem? Would my computer speed up and will respond/act faster? I know that I have 4 GB DDR3 right now, 2 GB that is shared with the graphics card and my task manager says that I have only used 1 out of 4 slots. Does this mean that I have another 3 empty slots that can be filled with ram? Also, is there a maximum amount of ram my computer can handle? I have seen some people ask about it but have no idea about it. So, my real question, would it be possible to add 8 GB of ram? This means that I would have a total of 12 GB ram, and would most likely have 4GB, 4GB, 4GB of ram, 3 slots taken out of 4. If I have 4 slots. But if I have 2 slots, then could I add an 8GB ram, and would have 4GB and 8GB, still totaling up to 12GB?

A:Lenovo Z510! ABOUT RAM

Hi fwachee,

Welcome to the COmmunity Forums.

Yes you can add 8GB ram to your current 4GB for a total of 12 GB.

As per specification from your hardware manual (page 27):
 DDR3-1600/1333MHz SODIMM 2 (max 16 GB)

Two slot are physically available if you would open it up for confirmation as shown below.

This would definitely improve speed and memory utilization of your machine specially with multiple browser and virtual machine apps.

Hope this help answer your query.

Regards

Hello, I've just installed a SSD 120GB Plextor M5Pro drive on my Ideapad z510.Laptop is now fast as hell, but cooling fan works too loud now. It activates when CPU usage is about 5% and is much louder than before. When I switched back to 1TB SSHD it's quiet again. There's no fan-controlling option in BIOS and I wonder if theres an BIOS update or addiotional driver that allows adjusting fan speed. It's very annoying becouse laptop is twice louder than before. At 40% of CPU usage temperatures are like this:And the air is cold or barely warm.I request a BIOS or driver update if there's nothing like that now - for many customers that would like to use their SSDs along with z510 model it will be very helpful. Or any other solution that work. Please help.

A:z510 fan loud with SSD

Is it possible that you just think it is louder because the SSD it selve doesn't make any noise so will probably notice the fan more than bevor. I upgraded my Z510 to an SSD too and doesn't hear any difference.
