I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guysmiley !

Download the install file :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Then disconnect from the internet : if wired unplug the cable, if wireless right-click the wireless tray icon and click deactivate or turn the router off. Then disable your firewall and antivirus and try to install the file. Make sure you reenable your firewall and antivirus before you reconnect to the internet and tell us how that went.

If that didn't work install this other update for XML Core Services 4.0 SP2 first. According to this thread on the ms newsgroups it seems to work for most people.

Do you use Vista or Xp?

For XP fix:

1. Download the update program "msxml4-KB936181-enu.exe" from the Microsoft site, not Windows Update.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...F5-CB46-43DF-A2B8-185639BA2807&displaylang=en

2. Run the program and tell it to remove all.

3. Reboot, and run the program again to install it.
4 Run the Windows Update file for "Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2".

After reboot, the icon should be gone and it will no longer pop up.

Vista Fix

1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and select Programs and Features.

2. Uninstall all entrys related to Microsoft XML core services (These will be clearly marked)

3. Close everything down back to the desktop and do a search for updates
and you should get the normal 1 XML Core Services 4.0 update.

4. Uninstall this and it should fix the problem.

On my automatic search for updates for Windows Vista, I keep getting a message to install: Security Update For Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181). I install it. Then the next time the search for udates occurs, is says it is available, and to install it again. What is going on? I keep installing it, but it keeps telling me to install it? The update is dated from July or August of 2007 as to when it came out. What is going on here? Should I ignore it or Should I keep installing it every time? Help!!

I reinstalled it and then immediately checked to see if it was actually installed. I checked the update list. It was not there. Then I checked the Uninstall programs list and there it was. Now I am going to see if it is going to cause any problems when the computer next checks for updates. If it does, then I guess I will have to try what "Dialer" has suggested. Wish me luck!! FYI this is on a relatively brand new computer. Bought the dang thing in May 2007. I will check back in and let you know what happens.

Before you decide to ignore the message, I'd suggest you verify that the update actually is installed on your machine. It shows up in my add/remove programs list, along with 941833, which installed on the same date. They both also show up in my Belarc Advisor profile under the heading and subheading: Installed Microsoft Hotfixes: MSXML4SP2.You might find some useful info in this MS article: Description of the security update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0: August 14, 2007. If for some reason you decide to ignore the update message, you can right click on it in your updates list and select to hide it.

I just got this new computer with Vista 64 bit on it and I run into a lot of problems. One of them is that I cannot install this update that I am prompted to install as being critical. It doesn't install no matter what. I tried going directly to the website but still it doesn't install. I usually got error code 652. I also got error code 643 one time but mostly 652. The full message reads:

Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable.

At one point, trying to download from the website, after logging in as Administrator, I got the message that another installation is in process. There was no other installation other than this one which I kept trying over and over. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

BTW, I was online with chat support with Hewlett Packard, my computer's manufacturer for quite a while on two separate days and they couldn't figure it out. They suggest appealing to Microsoft directly. What is going on here?

Are you responding to an out of date alert form Secunia PSI?
See...
http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/15049/update_msxml_4
Secunia will flag msxml 4  it as out of date because it is now end of life. msxml4 will have no more updates, therefore (barring proof of a vulnerability) there is no way to know whether or not it is now a security issue - hence the Secunia warning..

Installing msxml6 will no upgrade msxml4 but will install alongside it. The one question not answered in that thread is what is likely to break on installing mxsml4. You may well have some applications dependant on it.

I reluctantly chose to whitelist msxml4 in Secunia after checking I was on the latest available version (4.30.2117.0)

If your computer is up-to-date with all the other updates from Windows update then SP3 in itself is not very important. It's only really useful for people who want to install Windows XP from scratch on a new machine so that they don't need to install all the updates one at a time.

I've been looking for reviews all around the net and I've found mixed reviews on SP3. And it's got me thinking if I should update or not.

So here are my questions:

Is it faster than SP1 or SP2? (Like increased OS speed)

Are there no bugs on SP3? (Like software incompatibilities, etc.)

A:Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and Family update (KB951847)

I wonder if this is related to my problem: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...=203549&hl=In the last couple days, .net and c+++ items have been subjects of my problem. This all started after the february 2009 patch tuesday last week.I further suspect .net as on the Security Now podcast, Steve Gibson mentioned a .net glob of 250 megs was involved in the patch. listen to the first few minutes, and he mentions it, but nothing about the patch breaking anything."Then the big mother was a .NET Framework update. And it's 250MB." he says. http://www.grc.com/sn/sn-183.txtnot to dual post, I'll get back to researching my problem, now that I have a desktop back, I need to try other things to fix the side by side error.Good luck.

I was just wondering if there is a Vista Service pack 3? I can't find anywhere that there is, yet this update popped up on my computer saying that there is an update that says "The 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 3"
Since I don't have service pack 3 if there is any, do I still install?

Thank you

I am unable to load the above-mentioned update and get error code 0x737D. I gather it is because I need to load an update prior to the above-titled but I am unable to see how to resolve this and would be grateful for some advice in an easy to understand format (namely I am a little simple with regard to computers).

IE SP1 is basically an overhaul of the IE system *guesses you have 2000 or below* updating it from IE 5 to IE 6, with all the included security additions and feature add-ons.

Hi,

I cannot install this as I keep getting an error saying it cannot be installed. I don't necessarily want it, I just don't want the update to display anymore. Is this possible?

Do I need another update to replace it?

Thank you,

Hi
We have an issue with this security update, as it keeps on failing to install in windows update.
I receive error code: 851A004A
What I have did was to manually install the the update from the MS site, and the machine shows it has been installed and when I ran updates again, windows updates picks this security update again even though its installed.
I have removed SQL server 2012 developer edition  and all of its components, restarted the machine. Did windows updates and then installed SQL 2012 again and manualy installed KB3045321 and still after running windows updates, windows shows tries
to install this update.
My company runs reports from WSUS regarding failed windows updates. This machine appears in the report even though its installed. I have tried hiding this update and still it appears in the report.
I then built another machine, did windows updates, installed SQL server 2012 developer edition ran windows updates and again it fails to install the security update. It gives the same error message 851A004A. Again installed update manually and still
windows updates tries to install this update again.
Any ideas ?

Hi I tried twice today to download and install the following updates, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86. it is a large update taking approx 30mins to download the 248MB package. Both times it got to the end of the download and the next I got was a message saying installation failed. At first I thought it was Comodo BoClean so turned it off the second time but got the same result anyway.
My PC is an AMD Athlon XP2400+, 1GB of RAM running on XP3 and updated via Automatic Updates "notify but do not install". I got a MSN email notification on IE8 RC1 and decided to check my Firewall connection to Microsoft Update, where I was told that the mentioned updates were available and decided to install them though not IE8 at this time.

For real time protection I use Comodo CIS, Comodo BoClean and SpywareBlaster. I switched off BoClean the second time and set CIS to installation mode both times. I cannot see anything else on my PC which could hinder the installation process. In my Add/Remove program list I have Microsoft .NET Framework versions 1.1,1.1 Hotfix, 2.0 Service Pack1, 3.0 Service Pack1, 3.5, Should I uninstall these before installing the latest version or should they all remain on my installed programs?. I would appreciate it if someone could offer some help here as I like to keep my PC up to date.

Hi .Well...let's start with the reason you have MS .NET installed on your system.What applications/drivers do you use which require any version?If you have no such applications...IMO it's not even necessary to install any version of MS .NET on a system. Doing so is a waste of time for those who don't have applications which demand MS .NET.http://forums.techarena.in/customize-xp/866859.htmLouis

I haven't downloaded this update as I have dial-up and it says 26-48 hours to update this. Also, I had to reformat my computer three times with the SP3, even downloading from disk instead of internet - so scared to download Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86 as don't want to have to reformat (and also don't want my computer running for 2-3 days to download).
Are there problems with this download like there were with SP3 (I ended up never being able to have a working computer with SP3)? Do I need this update? Will there be problems if I download from internet, and if not any other ways to update this (for free)?
Thank you.

Try System Restore to before the problem began. This might force Updates to install correctly this time.

If not work through these steps:
Windows Update - Reset - Windows 7 Forums
System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

If these don't help check the System File integrity: SFC /SCANNOW Command

A:Vista will not update from Service Pack 1 to Service Pack 2

Hi,

To recreate the error, I suggest we try these steps to reinstall

Step 1: Run the System Update Readiness Tool
====================================
1. Please download the System Update Readiness Tool from the link below according to the System Type:

System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista 32-bit

2. Double click downloaded file to run the System Update Readiness Tool.

Then, let's run System File Checker (SFC) to repair Windows Vista system files.

Step 2: Run System File Checker (SFC) to repair Windows Vista system files
=================================================
1. Click Start, type "cmd" (without the quote) in the Start Search bar, right-click cmd.exe and click run as administrator.

2. Input the following commands and press Enter after each line.

sfc /scannow

Note: There is a SPACE between "SFC" and "/Scannow". This command will take several minutes to complete.

Restart the computer.

Then, I suggest downloading the Standalone Installer and installing it in Clean Boot Mode.

I came here because I can't get a satisfactory answer at Secunia. My windows Updater has updated everything yet Secunia says Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 6.x is Insecure and needs to be updated. I created an Ignore rule as per instructed from Secunia but it did not work after I did a re-scan. I indicated that in their forum but I've gotten no response in weeks. Hopefully someone here can help me. I'm using Vista Premium 32 bit.

Thanks.

A:Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 6.x

It seems no one can offer any advise for me on this problem. Maybe some more info may be helpful. This program, utility, or whatever it is, is located on the D drive. I don't know the purpose of this drive and why the program was put there or if it has to be there. This seems to be a challenging problem.Thanks,Dave

The computer I have (information below) has Secunia on it - I have never heard of it before and have been updating as options come along. First, do I really need Secunia? My nephew used the computer and put Secunia on it. Right now, it has a message about Microsoft Core XML Services .4 X is End of Life. I've found many discussions on this, and most people say not to download the version that Secunia directs you to, which is .6, but they aren't sure what to do about the message. The overwhelming answer is that it's a problem with Secunia, but Secunia isn't answering the questions asked about this. Again, I don't even know what MS Core XML Services does. I've read a bit about it and it doesn't sound like something I need, but I just don't know. I almost never use IE - almost exclusively have used Chrome for a couple of years now. Secunia now is "strongly" recommending updating the Core XML or removing it.

Other questions I've come across are concerning Secunia and the D (Recovery) drive. I don't think I had that on my previous computer, and am not sure what the Recovery drive will do. But, my first concern is the Core XML message.

So basically, should I keep Secunia and should I remove Microsoft Core XML Services?

Thank you for any help you can provide me.

I'm glad I saw this thread, this was also driving me crazy, and still does...

In A Guy's last post there he states version 4.30.2117 (4 sp3) which I have, is the latest and greatest, so I believe I'm up-to-date, and I understand everything, but this:

Quote:
If there is an updated file, you will receive it via Windows Update. But don't expect one as MS are the ones marking it EOL.

I understand if it is EOL, its EOL, but has anyone heard (hint, Noel, hint, hint) what direction Microsoft is going to take as far as plugging this security hole or isn't it that big a hole to worry about?

~~~ ~~~~ ~~~
As an afterthought I went here and found how to determine my MSXML version: Description of updates for MSXML Core Services 3.0 and MSXML Core Services 6.0 and I found that I do have MSXML3, and 6 on my machine, actually 4 versions.
Do we just sit and wait until something shows up to upgrade MSXML 4.x on a patch Tuesday to whatever or do we wait for supercedence?
MSXML was already upgraded in Win 7 - the other versions may only be needed for compatibility purposes.
You could always try uninstalling them and seeing what falls over?
Ok, let me begin by saying I'm not an expert on the computer by any stretch of the word.
That being said, I've been having a problem with an update that Windows Update has been TRYING to install on my computer for at LEAST a month.
Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)
pops up many times a day and it will SAY that it is installing (or that it has been installed) but then a few minutes later POP! There it shows up again. I've tried turning off my anti-virus (Norton 360) and installing it, and nothing works. I have LITERALLY tried installing this thing over 100 times.
Has anyone had any problems appling this security update for Microsoft XML Core servoces 4.0 for SP2 (KB954430)?
I had a look at the MS website, they give alot of work-arounds after you do this patch because of alot of issues.
Kinda makes me wonder if I want it?????
Thanks
A:Update for XML Core Services
I suggest that you read the description before you decide whether you want to omit or not.
Personally, I would say that it should be installed because it's a critical update...and then I would move on.
If I chose not to install something because there might be problems...I don't think I would ever have acquired a computer. If you think systems and Win XP have "problems", you probably ought to be transported back to 1996-1997 (my first system), when systems were much more expensive, more buggy, fewer options...and less was known about malware and system security.
