Wireless W7/Vista Homegroup sharing network suddenly doesnt work

Q: Wireless W7/Vista Homegroup sharing network suddenly doesnt work

I have a wireless network setup comprising of a Windows 7 desktop and a Vista laptop

Everything worked fine but I suddenly have found that my computer sharing network setup is no longer working.

When I try to access my Desktop PC from my laptop the Desktop Computer PC icon shows, but when I click on it I get a message
?Windows cannot access Desktop Windows has sent the request to the DNS server and that name was unknown"

When I try to access the laptop from my Desktop?s Windows7 (control panel>network sharing center) the Laptop icon no longer shows as it did previously.
Any suggestions on what is wrong and how to fix the problem greatly appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Wireless W7/Vista Homegroup sharing network suddenly doesnt work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If all computers on your network are using Windows 7 you need to use a Homegroup.

If you have computers with earlier versions of Windows on your network, all the computers need to be in a Workgroup.

Hello,
this is my first post here and I tried browsing for similar errors, but didn't find anything like this. Hope I can find some help here.

I have Windows 7 (64 bit) on Samsung RV520 - it's a new laptop, I got it about 5 weeks ago. The problem is that after the computer wakes up from sleep mode, the Internet connection is lost and the Network and Sharing Center is not responding at all. Sometimes it does not detect any networks (neither the cable one nor the wifi connection), sometimes it recognizes them but gives "cannot connect" message, sometimes it says I'm connected, but nothing Internet-related works anyway. Either way, every time my laptop goes into sleep mode and I want to access Internet, I have to restart the system, and well.. this is rather annoying.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the source of the problem and what can I do about it? It's not about the Intenet provider, since on the roommate's laptop all the connections work perfectly fine.

Thanks a lot for any suggestions!

A:Network and Sharing Center doesnt't work after sleep mode

Try setting the Power option for the Wireless Adapter to Maximum Performance to prevent the internet connection from being lost.

Control Panel, Power Options.
Click on Change plan settings net to Balanced (Recommended).
Click on Change advanced power settings.
Expand Wireless Adapter Settings.
Expand Power Saving Mode.
Click on Setting: and chose Maximum Performance.
Click Apply.

Reboot and see what happens the next time toe computer goes to sleep.

Hi all,
I have a problem with my wireless network. I am running Windows XP home on my laptop(IBM thinkpad R51). I want to create an adhoc wireless network so that I can access internet from my netbook. I do not have any external wireless adapter.

So I installed the wireless adapter driver for 2200BG, then I right click on the wireless network, and I created an adhoc network, with open and no password, my firewall is also disabled. After I click ok, there is still a red cross next to the wireless network. On my netbook I can see the name of the adhoc network I created. When I clikc to connect to it, on my laptop, the wireless network starts to aquire IP address. Then it says 'connected' . However, there are only a few packets being sent , none received. So I cant use the internet on my netbook.

Please help , I have spent over 10 hours over this issue, trying every troublesooting from many websites, but nothing has worked..

I recently bought an Acer that mounts Vista and Intel Wireless.
When I work with a regular dsl cable the internet works, with wireless it doesnt.
I have tried everything from the forums, including upgrading the card's firmware, giving it a static IP, resetting the router, going into the registry as suggested...there doesnt seem to be a solution. I get the signal fine, it's just not connecting to anything. I tried pinging with intel's diagnostics and the DHCP server gives me no answer...

Ive just installed Windows Vista on my girlfriends Dell Inspiron 1300
and the wireless wont work, it says it cant find any networks in range
even though its broadcast... I managed to get it on by inserting the LAN,
fiddling about in Network Connections (been on for 4 hours now) then the
1st time I removed the LAN the wireless connection failed then the 2nd time
i removed it it worked great but as soon as i plugged that LAN cable into the

limited..or no connection and wouldnt work....

Now I cant get the wireless working, even if I broadcast it with no security
OR insert the LAN and mess around... It now reports no wireless in range
tho im right next to it (1.5 meters away) and the wireless card is installed

Does anyone know what this is? its a Dell 1370 Internal WiFi running on VISTAs

Does there have to be a Vista log on password for both computers - one computer has one, and the other doesn't

A:Wireless Network File Sharing in Vista

Create a password on each machine, the default is to inhibit file sharing with no password.

You can run control userpasswords2 from a command prompt to automate the login to the desktop if that's your reason for not having passwords.

I did not set up my pc's to share over my home wireless network, but suddenly today I see that all drives and the printer are available between each computer. I had tried to set up the computers to share months ago, but never got it to work and gave up.

The desktop is old, running WinME, one laptop is running WinXPpro, the other laptop is running Vista. They are all connected to a Westell router/dsl modem for internet through Verizon.

So, I turn the desktop off daily. Today I go to turn it off and it says the WinXP laptop is connected and do I really want to shut down. I go to windows explorer on both machines and sure enough I have access to the other drives on each computer. I start the Vista machine and see the same.

Am I compromised?

A:MY home computers suddenly sharing over home wireless network

If you didn't make the change to share all drives, then somebody did. I would assume the worst. Time to reformat and reinstall.

Windows ME is past end of life, and no security updates are provided by MS. I wouldn't run it anymore. Maybe you'd want to try out some linux distros, some are quite good on old hardware. See this review:
http://www.linux.com/feature/52134

It seems you don't have a separate router, I would advise you to get one. I have a modem/router too but I also have a separate hardware firewall/router. The modem/router does NAT but I constantly see connections/attacks making it past the modem/router to my firewall. Having a separate router is a good thing.

Since you are using wireless, did you enable the encryption? If you have WPA or WPA2 use them and setup a long and complicated passphrase. Use WEP if you have no other choice cause WEP can be broken into real quick. You must enable encryption because with wireless, all your machines are sitting ducks when you have close range attackers, whereas with wired, at least you still have a perimeter which you can fortify with a firewall. Also it is especially important to have software firewalls on Each PC when using wireless.

Hello everyone!
So yesterday, my laptop simply decided to stop connecting to my wireless network. I'm at a loss as to why and what to do. All other devices in my house are getting a perfect signal from the network but my computer either can't find it, or only has 1 green bar and says it cannot connect. I've tried a system restore, I've tried to troubleshoot on my computer and can't figure it out. The weird thing is it is picking up other wireless signals fine (like my neighbors, ect) but just not my home one. Again, it was working one minute, then simply stopped working and hasn't been able to connect at all.
Help!

heyo all. I have a small problem. Up until a week ago my computer ran pretty much anything as far as games go. crysis, far cry 2, fallout 3, WoW, Grid anything. But then it started freezing and stuttering.

For example crysis now freezes 5 seconds after starting and just makes that annoying audio sound programs make when they freeze. Wow loads and then goes into some kind of loop where it works for 5 seconds and then resets its self and goes through the same 5 seconds. Unreal tournament, fallout 3, Jericho, dead space all do the same (freeze and stutter). My computer has gone from perfect to me wanting to smash it.

I downloaded the latest drivers and direct x but still nothing please help.

I am running

Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme music sound card 6.0.1.1361
windows XP media centre

also i downloaded an update for wow about 5 days before this started happening.

I'm sure this has been asked a bajillion times, but I can't make heads nor tails out of the information I've read so far on this subject. (One forum suggested using 2 routers and disabling DHCP one one of them and all this other stuff. That one really hurt my tired head)
I know minor bits and pieces of networking, so hear me out.

Setup:
Wireless DSL modem (Broadcom ADSL Modem/Router all in one) hardwired to Vista32 bit machine.
XP Machine w/D-Link USB Wireless adapter. (Using the D-Link wireless connection software, not the Windows Wireless Network connection manager)
Nothing going on in Workgroups XP machine except that it used to be on a wired network so it has shared folders set up.
All I want to do is use the wireless connection and access the Vista machine from the XP machine so I can get my music off the Vista comp.
I can't figure out the Vista file sharing stuff in Network and Sharing center, too many options, too unsure of what they do.
Neither computer shows up in the other's network. How do I make them see each other?
The "Broadcom ADSL router" does show up under My Network Places on the XP machine, but that's as far as it goes.
In case it matters, in the wireless connection manager for the D-Link USB wireless adapter on the XP machine it shows Network Type:Infrastructure, not AdHoc.

Well, it could be a server problem, a network problem, or a long period of inactivity. Try rebooting. If that doesn't work, try again an hour or so later. If it doesn't work by tomorrow, call Comcast to report a server or network problem.

Hi,

I have a group of 8 computers, connected to a homegroup network. I have admin rights on all the computers.

Is it possible to share a file or folder only to a particular computer?

I want to collect the daily work report from the other 7 pc's. But they should not see what other people are sharing.

Also, by default the USER folder (i.e. downloads, desktop, etc). How can I turn off the sharing of a particular folder, say downloads?

I googled about the homegroup sharing, but I did not succeed in finding what I wanted.

Any help is really appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Sharing to a particular host in a homegroup network.

Hmm, I don't use a homegroup so not sure if this may help you.

Since you are admin on all machines (should work as long as you supply an authenticated admin credentials), you can try an administrative share:

In Windows Explorer address bar, type:
\\nameofpc\c$\<folder location>

d$ if it is on d, etc.
ip of comp if nameofpc won't work

See if this would help you

Hi, I have searched but not found much with what I want to set up. I currently have a wireless connection to the internet for my PC and Laptop. What I would like to do is setup a private LAN with an old router to use but be able to keep the desktop connected to both WiFi and this LAN.

The only way I have managed to do so so far is by manually setting the IP address for the LAN (disable DHCP, change IP address etc) and assigning the LAN IP address manually to my desktop/laptop, leaving the gateway fields blank. I have noticed that doing this makes my network "Unknown" to Windows 7, which then forces it into Public mode, and disables Homegroup.

Is there a way for me to accomplish what I want?
Is pretty much how I want it to work. The desktop has two NICs, the laptop does not, so I realize the laptop would be a one-or-the-other scenario.

A:Network Sharing / Homegroup on private LAN

Daft question, why do you need two routers? Is your Laptop connected wirelessly? If so then your desktop should be accessible from your Laptop if you have File Sharing enabled, what O.S. is your Laptop? if it's running 7 just add it to your Homegroup.
I have two Laptops both running 7 both connect Wirelessly to the Net and to my Main Desktop which is wired to the Router.

Okay, i'm new hear, and i've got a bunch of questions, they all really relate to the same thing:

My computer is running Windows 7 build 7100
My Brother's computer is aswell

We are both connected wirelessly to our Router/Modem (Livebox), and we are both connected to the same Homegroup (i finally managed to get them show up in Explorer), and we are both connected to WORKGROUP, as is my Dad (Vista) and our other PC (XP, wired to livebox for printer sharing).

So, i was trying to get the "Play To" feature in WMP to work with my brother and my computer, but it doesnt seem to work.

a) On my computer i can't select "Allow Remote control of my player" though i can on my Bro"s

b) In "Media Streaming Options" and "Show devices on Local Network"(default i can't see my brothers computer, and on his he can't see mine. (This is obviously the problem), but if i select "Show devices on all networks" we can see each others computers.
For some reason though, we can see our mums Kodak Photo Frame thing, and "Media Programs on this PC..."

c) In WMP on both our computers we cant see each others computers in the HomeGroup even though all media is shared, so we have to go and look in Explorer "Homegroup" - "XXX-PC" - Music
Please Help Me, and if you need more info on what i'm trying to get at, just ask and i will give it.

I live in a shared house so I don't want all my folders shared willy nilly on the network.

I would however like to share folders between my laptop (windows 7) and my tablet (windows 10)

I have created a workgroup and joined both (I'm assuming this will mean that anyone not in the same workgroup won't be able to see anything) but I can't find a way to share a folder from laptop to "TABLET/USER" I can only pick local users.

Am I going about this totally wrong?

I'd like to share between just these two devices and make sure no one else can see my stuff

I have looked through all the services recommended by others to make sure they are running. They are on both machines.

I have both machines joined to a homegroup, however Ziost was unable to create a homegroup. The error message simply just said the homegroup could not be created on that machine. So I created the homegroup on Mandalore. No problem, it created just fine and spit out a password. Ziost was able to see the homegroup and join it just fine with the password given out.

I can access Mandalores folders FROM Ziost. And on Ziost I can see Madalore in the Network in Windows Explorer.

However, on Mandalore, it says I'm in a homegroup, but there are no PC's in the homegroup. And Mandalore cannot see Ziost in the Network section of Windows Explorer.

I thought it could be the default firewall settings. But on both machines the firewall settings are identical.

Hello. I am running Windows 7 and yesterday my wife bought an HP 3512 printer. It has wireless capabilities, so she thought it would be nice to be able to print from other computers or tablets or phones in our house.

I originally had issues even getting it to connect via wireless but it is now connected to my router, has an IP address, and if I log into my router, I see its connection. The printer works fine if I have it plugged in via USB. But as soon as I unplug the cable, the printer goes offline. Now, I assumed that by wireless printer, that meant I would not even need it hooked up to my desktop. Maybe I am wrong on that though.

But my main issue is I cannot get the printer shared with the homegroup. If I run the printer troubleshooting, it even tells me that the printer is not shared with the homegroup and I should try to have it shard as administrator. So I click that box then it tells me it found but could not fix the issue. It's still not shared. If I go to the printer, go to properties, then sharing, if I try to click share and apply changes, I get an error saying "printer settings could not be saved. error code (0x0000000001) or something. It simply will not go onto the homegroup.

So question one would be.. how do I do this? If I add it to the homegroup to be shared, would that allow me to move the printer off of my desk and unplug the USB and still be able to print?

Also, still regarding Homegroups. My computer is connected via wire to my FIOS router... Read more

Both sound and microphone was perfectly fine for about 5min then suddenly the mic doesnt work anymore... there is still sound but i just cant get the microphone working

i have tried testing the mic on another laptop and it was worked perfectly fine

can anybody help???

i have tried going into Control Panel and sound --- there is advance option for the speakers but no advance option for the microphone

i was wondering is there such thing as compatible or alternative soundcard drivers i could try???
the last resort would be buying another soundcard...
i have had this problem for about 3 days and it is driving me mad!

thank you in advance

3 days ago, access through my laptop on my home network to my main pc suddenly stopped working. i installed and changed nothing, as a result i wiped both the laptop and pc and reinstalled Win 7 Enterprise and Win 7 Ultimate respectively and i am still getting the " you do not have permission to access ---" i have taken ownershp, turned off password enabled sharing etc to fix this and nothing has worked. the only clue i have is that it may actually be an issue with the shared drive (storage) as viewing the shared drive over the network, the properties of the drive show up as 0 bytes/files.

Has anyone encountered this before?

Thanks

I've been using the same network configuration for about 4 years now and everything usually works fine. I have 3 desktops in my home as well as a laptop that all share the same internet. I recently replaced my old gaming rig (which is where the modem+router is located at). This new rig works came with vista and ever since then my network has been screwy. All other computers in the house other than mine cannot connect to the network. In fact, the network named "WLAN" doesn't even show up in the list of networks. The only networks listed under the list are the networks of my neighbors.

What's weird about this problem is that all the other computers can connect to the network when the gaming rig is OFF, but not when it's ON.

Built Gaming Rig=Vista
2 Dell Laptops=XP
HP Laptop=Vista

I am using cox high-speed internet (cable) with a belkin router.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I have had a problem for a long time where my ADSL usb modem says limited or no connectivity and on clicking "repair" recieve the error "Unable to renew ip address" (although the internet seems to work fine). However the other day I ran a program called winsockfix to try and sort this problem out. System restore was unfortunately turned off at the time and since running the program suddenly my e-mail program won't work anymore (Eudora) it just says "cannot find host" when trying to download messages. This is annoying enough but the MAJOR problem is that now the internet sharing over my network of two computers both running XP suddenly doesn't work. The host computer (which I ran winsockfix on) is still connecting to the internet as normal (except for the aforementioned email problem) but the other computer although an icon pops saying "internet connection found" no webpages will load and I cannot sign into msn messenger. I have got no idea what to do can anyone please help me? Thanks.

A:Internet sharing suddenly won't work

Run an "ipconfig /all" at a command prompt and post the results. That will give us a much better idea of what's going on with the IP addresses, gateway address, subnet mask, etc.

Greetings.
I'm a total newbie on homenet in Windows 7 and windows 8, so please bear with me on this.

Earlier I had a Windows 7 "main-PC", and a small (very small) PC running 24/7 with WinXP. With that my network drives worked fine from Windows 7. I could read the drive on the XP, but not the other way. That was OK.

I then got a Windows 8 pro x64 upgrade licens, so I upgraded my Windows XP to Windows 8 Pro, thinking that home-network now just run without problems. What a mistake

At first I tried to create a homegroup on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Some services did not run, so I checked your guide to create a home group Homegroup - Create. That was not possible as I first had to change the language in my Windows from danish to english, and after that try to find the services the guide need.

Function Discovery Provider Host and Function Discovery Resource Publication is not on my servicelist, so I don't know what to do. In settings of homegroup, I can mark the things I want to share (pics, music aso), and then save the setting. But next time I look at this page, I share nothing again. It does not start sharing anything. At the Windows 8 PC I have joined the homegroup and typed the password got from Win7-PC. It claim to be connected to the home group, but no other computer is to be seen. The same in the Win7-PC. It also claim to be connected to the same homegroup, but no other computer is to be seen. Homegroup was created witn win7, and homegroup was joine... Read more

I have a combined wireless router/modem Netgear Model#B90-755025-15 which I bought from AT&T which provides my naked DSL Internet connection and a Magicjack-Plus unit for phone service (which we love). I NEVER disconnect the cables, power A/C adapter unit or the Canon MX439 wireless printer/fax/scanner/copier, USB cable from my laptop.

My Problem: When my kids & grandkids were here they connected their laptops to my Homegroup Network but when they tried to print wirelessly from the other room ... they couldn't. When I went to my Control Panel, Network, Homegroup, there under Shared items there was a check mark for Printers. I always thought that this meant other users on my Homegroup Network could remotely access my wireless printer. Apparently I'm wrong in my assumption. When my kids tried to wirelessly access my printer they got a message, The printer is not connected.
What do I need to do to make my wireless printer accessible to others when they are in another room?? Thanks, John

Hi,
I have a problem with Win7 Homegroups. I have a combination of a wired and wireless network consisting of 2 desktop PC's, 2 laptops and 2 netbooks. I have configured all of these machine to operate under a homegroup through the wired network but when I try
to connect the laptops and netbooks, all I get in Explorer is that there are no homegroups available. Plugging in the wired connection fixes the problem but I need to have these laptops / netbooks be able to access the homegroup over wifi.
All PC's can access the internet both through wired and wifi connections through a Linksys WAG320N router. The laptops are Dell XPS M1210 and Inspiron 1520. The netbooks are both Lenovo S10E.
All PC's have been checked to be in the Home network using the same workgroup and running DHCP. I have turned off the firewall of one of the Lenovo's but this didn't fix the problem. The Homegroup troubleshooter can also not determine any problem.
Obviously, I'm missing something still but I can't see it. Any help would be great.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
Craig

A:Homegroup not working with wireless network

Hi Jagade,
It seems to be working now for some reason. I had reset the router before but a second reset seems to have fixed it. I am thinking the router may need replacing in the near future as it occasionally loses wifi for no reason.
Thanks for the advice

Select Safe Mode using the arrow key on your keyboard and press Enter.
Login as Administrator (no password unless you added one. If so, enter that password).
Open My Computer.
Right click on drive: and select Properties (drive: is your boot drive, usually C:)
Click on the Tools tab then the Check now button.
Check the Automatically fix File System errors box.

Alternatively, you can click on Start then Run, type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter.

For your boot drive (usually C:), you will get a window that says the check could not be performed ....
Do you want to schedule this disk check to run the next time you restart the computer?
Click on Yes.

Shutdown and reboot. Chkdsk will start. It can take an hour or more to run depending on the size of your hard drive.

Be patient and let it complete undisturbed.

If that doesn't fix it then run System File Checker:

Dear,Since I didn't upgrade my OS during the free upgrade period from win7 to win10, I reinstalled completely my laptop few days ago and currently I have windows 10 education edition (free edition from university). A:Wireless button F12 doesnt work

Hi: The driver you need for the 0004 is not the quick launch buttons but this one... This package provides the HP 3D DriveGuard software for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. HP 3D DriveGuard protects the hard drive by "parking the heads" if the notebook is accidentally dropped or is abruptly impacted by another object.   ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp64001-64500/sp64144.exe Perhaps you weren't aware that HP does not support your notebook for W8, W8.1 or W10. Since they don't support your model series for W10, they don't provide any driver support for W10. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05195282 Your model doesn't need the wireless button driver for the F12 key to work because unless you have an unknown device in the device manager with a hardware ID of ACPI\HPQ6001, the hardware doesn't exist. You have a problem with the wireless card not being compatible with W10, and it is not working--even though the driver may be installed.

Hi there.

I have 2 computers and the networking and homegroup between them was fine (could share files, print remotely, etc).

Then I decided to change the name on one of them and everything has got very screwed up and I desperately need help! (I believe the homegroup problem emanates from the network problem)

If we say the original PC that created the homegroup was called OLDNAME and I wanted to make it NEWNAME. Then I went to the other PC and found that now nothing worked. So, rather than play with everything, I went back to the original and renamed it OLDNAME again... but alas, this didn't fix things. (Yes, I did do reboots after the renames).

The strange thing now is that when I try to connect to the homegroup from the second PC it says there is a homegroup managed by "name" on NEWNAME (even though the name is OLDNAME again) and whatever I do, this doesn't change. If I try to join it, after about a minute it comes back and says it can't connect.

To access files from PC2 to OLDNAME, I have had to change all the permissions individually to be able to see them. If I try to print I'm told that the active directory domain server can't be accessed.

All this is down to a simple change of computer name that screwed something and doesn't want to go back to the way it was.

A beer or two for anyone who can help me fix this!

Thanks

Brian Cleveland

A:Changed Computer Name and now Network and HomeGroup doesn't work

To fix the Homegroup permission problems you might try leaving the Homegroup from both machines and then create a new one. Changing the computer name will break the Homegroup sharing permissions so this may be the only actual problem you have so it might be worth while to try doing this first.
Homegroup - Leave

Homegroup - Create

Changing the computer or User name can cause problems with file associations which aren't very easy to fix. Besides changing the User name you would also need to change the account's user profile folder name in C:\Users, the link below shows you how. This may not apply in your case.

User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name

If you can't leave the Homegroup there is a way to fix it.

The fix for this problem seems to be Deleting the file idstore.sst under C:\windows\serviceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking

Once everything at peer Networking Grouping is running you may also need to do this...

Start the Task Manager
Click on the service Tab
Find the "HomeGroupProvider"
and then stop the service.

You may need to go back into services and enable Peernetworking again after the fix. Don't forget to restart all machines making the adjustments.

If you don't want to go through all that I would suggest you use the system restore feature to go back to a point in time to before the changes were made. System Restore
