I am unable to adjust my power settings

Q: I am unable to adjust my power settings

Hey everyone,

Thanks in advance for any help.

My Windows Vista isn't letting me adjust my power settings.

Here is what the problem:

1. I click the battery icon in the bottom right of the start bar. Then I click "More Power Options"

2. On the left panel of Power Options window, I click "Choose when to turn off the display"

My computer tells me "Your power plan information isn't available" with a red X next to it.

The same thing happens when I try to adjust any other power setting as well.

3. I click on the "Why can't Windows retrieve this information?" and it says stuff about my system administrator making changes, and that doesn't apply to me. I am the only user of the computer and my account is the administrator. I've never tinkered with any of these files to my memory.

It also says "Some of your power management settings, or the registry keys that are associated with those settings, have been deleted or corrupted. For more information, contact your system administrator." But I am the only administrator of this computer and the nice people at Microsoft never instructed me about this when I bought my computer.

I've done a SFC scan and it said "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I've also tried searching for an answer on other forums but I either don't understand the solutions, which usually involve registry edits...or the problems I've found aren't exactly on target and involve people who did system restores.

I also installed uniblue registry booster from some site and it did a search and told me I had lots of registry errors but of course it asked to pay. I mentioned it on the Microsoft forums and people told me that's a scam. Hopefully I didn't make the problem worse...

How can I fix this? All I want to do is edit the power settings of my computer. Thanks for any and all help.

Preferred Solution: I am unable to adjust my power settings

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: I am unable to adjust my power settings

Download malewarebytes and run it.

It is safe to use.

But before you do that try a system restore point to before you installed uniblue.
This will show how if you do not know
System Restore - How to[11]=Backup Restore
The reason I want you to run malewarebytes is to rule out maleware that
the uniblue program could have installed.
Just a note stay away from stuff like that.

Using the laptop on battery, when I press on F11-12, the brightness meter is shown on the upper left like usual, but it won't move up or down.  Yet I think it's strange that all other places I can adjust brightness are fine, and especially strange that everything is working totally fine on AC power.
I tried uninstalling the Generic PnP monitor and reinstalling, but to no results.  Also, both my power settings on battery and on power indicate no adaptive brightness.

1. do i need the qualcomm gobi package for hp 2000 or can i uninstall it?
2. when i put my cursor over a tab in my taskbar it shows me a little preview window...how do i disable this?
3. how do i add the date with the time in the bottom right corner? i saw it there before & then it disappeared. the date was over top of the time.
4. my settings wont save because my mouse touch pad keeps resetting after i disable it. how do can i make sure it stays disabled?

A:i have several settings i need to adjust

Hi jturk

1) I would leave it alone you may need it at some point - Search HP US - Search results for 'gobi 2000' - http://www.qualcomm.com/common/docum...oductSheet.pdf
2) Taskbar Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable
3) Date Format for Taskbar System Tray - Show Full Day and Month Names You need to use large taskbar icons I think - Taskbar - Use Small or Large Icons
4) If you not using the touchpad you can uninstall the divers for it see if that disables it.Or try disabling in "device manager"

Hope this helps

The touchpad on my Gateway ML 6228 laptop (running Windows Vista Home Basic) is too sensitive and it's driving me crazy. I've spent a long time looking and I can't find any way to adjust it. I just discovered tokbox.com, works pretty neat.

I've got an old Logitech QuickCam Pro4000 and it takes an overly bright
video, even with most of hte lights turned off in the room. Just the light from
the monitor washes out the color of my shirt for instance.

I couldn't remember which model I had and so downloaded software and
drivers for the Pro 5000 model at first, and saw that it was possible to
adjust camera brightness etc. But of course my 4000 wouldn't work with
the 5000 software. So, deleted that and downloaded the correct software.
But can't find any way to adjust the brightness.

Any ideas?

Hi, everyone..

I am new here and was hoping someone could help me, please.

I recently purchased an HP Pavilion notebook with the following specs:

Windows Vista Ultimate
Intel Core2 Duo processor T7500 @2.20 GHz
2046 MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8600 graphics card

Recently, I tried playing a DVD in the pre-installed WMA 11 program (the remote on my DVD/VCR broke) Unfortunately, the image looks washed out with minimal color saturation. I found out where the video settings were and tried to change them. Much to my dismay, however, they wouldn't budge! They are set at 50% (right in the middle), but whenever I use my mouse to adjust the settings, they just jump back to the middle.

Any clue on how I can fix this problem? I find it a bit odd and frustrating that the media player has a mind of its own.

Thank you to anyone who can help me.

I ordered an HP EliteOne 800 G2 23" All-in-One PC with a Recline Stand.  All instructions I have seen so far are inconsistent with the stand I received.  My stand has a lollipop-shaped key in the base that apparently needs to be removed so that the stand can be adjusted.  However I am unable to remove the key with normal exertion and am afraid to apply more force until I am sure of that I am doing.  The key seems to be slightly crooked so I am wondering if perhaps it was damaged in packing or shipping.  If anyone could help with any information about the Recline Stand, I would appreciate if very much.  So far I have found very little information, and nothing about the key, either in the box on on-line. Thank you,Ken Traynham

I am having this problem from past 3-4 days I am unable to adjust my laptop's brightness. The functions keys for brightness won't work. I also tried changing the power settings to high performance and balanced, that also doesn't changes the brightness.

A:Unable to adjust brightness in my windows 8.1

First off, figure out whether or not your laptop has an ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) which will automatically adjust the brightness (if all goes well). Usually it won't override a manual setting, but it's kind of up to the developer which one takes precedence. As for the keys not working, you probably removed (or didn't install after a Windows reinstall) the helper software that controls these functions.

hi nikunjpadhiar,
Welcome to the Forums.
When you installed the (Beema) AMD Driver, did you remove any previous traces of the AMD Display driver?
If not, can you try the following:
1. Navigate to the Control Panel (Icon Views) > Programs and Features and uninstall anything that relates to AMD Display Driver / AMD Control Center.and reboot. When finished, navigate to the Device Manager > Display Adapters and the driver should show a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
2. Install the (Beema) AMD Driver (VGA, HDAudio, SATA) for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) and reboot. When done, the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter from the Device Manager should now change to an AMD Radeon Display and check if you can now adjust the brgithness.
In addition, check this post by marcus34 as he was able to resolve the issue.

What happens when you try to adjust the brightness? Is there no setting? Setting grayed out? Or you change the setting but nothing happens?

If it changes for an instant, then reverts to what it was, adaptive brightness may be enabled.

Which screen capture program are you using? I would try another program, this is the first time I've heard of a screen capture program asking that kind of fix.
And as for Hardware Acceleration, I know of a lot of Laptops or Notebooks do not have this feature, mine is one and my wife's laptop being the other, the Laptops are 2 and 3 years old respectively.
