no audio device/ code 10 error

Q: no audio device/ code 10 error

about a week ago the sound on my laptop stopped working. i got the red x along with the no audio device installed message. i did a system restore, tried downloading a new audio driver, tried updating the driver but whenever i do i get a message that says the driver loaded incorrectly code 10 error wont let it start. i've tried the realtek driver and i get that message, the only time it doesnt happen is when i install the conextant audio driver but that only works temporarily, so i know my speakers are not busted. i went to the hp website to ind the correct driver but when i attempted a download i got another error message,"Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the device for this driver." as you can probably tell i know very little about computers. i have an hp pavilion dv2000 and am using vista with a 32 bit. any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Howdy folks, I recon most of you probably seen this problem before. I browsed around the forums and the internet a bit to see if somebody was successful in solving it. No luck so far.

All people who had this problem I seen online had Realtek Audio Drivers, I have VIA HD Audio Deck. When I go in control panel>device manager I see a faulty Audio Device with Code 10, the device is manufactured by Microsoft, not VIA. I tried uninstalling it but it reinstalls right away and still shows up as faulty with code error 10. I also tried uninstalling all VIA HD Audi drivers but that didn't help either.

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77MX-D3H
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
GPU :EVGA GeForce GTX 670 2GB
CPU: Intel core i5 3550 3.3GHZ
Sound cards: (1) NVIDIA High Definition Audio (2) High Definition Audio Device (3) High Definition Audio Device

I don't get the last two. Only one of them seems to be working and it's also manufactured by Microsoft.

All drivers are up to date.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there,

So when I woke up my computer from sleep this morning, for whatever reason, the sound didn't appear to be working. Nothing seemed to be amiss, but I simply wasn't getting any sound. When I clicked on the speaker icon and tried adjusting the volume, the bar would show up, but there'd be no sound.

So I tried restarting the computer, and the speaker icon now had a red cross next to it, and says "No audio output device is installed" when hovering over it. Clicking it brings up a "detecting problems" window, but it always says that no problems have been found, and/or that hardware changes may not have been detected.

When I go into device manager, there's no tab for "Sound", instead, it shows "other devices" with a question mark symbol next to it, and below it is "multimedia audio controller", which has a yellow warning triangle next to it. Trying to update the drivers does nothing, it apparently can't find any. When I click on the properties for the device, it says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)".
I can't seem to find what manufacturer it is or what not, since it lists everything as being "not known".

My computer is a Windows 7 64 bit, doesn't appear to be having any other issues currently aside from the sound not working at all. I've tried plugging in headphones as well (via the USB) to see if I could get sound from that, but nothing.

I haven't made any changes to my co... Read more

Hello. I installed a few recommended Windows Updates on 1/15. After the update, install, and computer refresh though, my audio stopped working. I went to Control Panel and tried opening up my audio driver, HT Omega Claro Halo, but the driver wouldn't open. I then checked my Device Manager and found the oh so fun error code 52 associated with my Claro Halo audio driver. You know, the one that says,

"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)"

I then rolled back my C drive to a previous restore point I made a few days ago and it was working again which means that something in the update was messing up my audio driver. I re-downloaded the Updates and uninstalled the drivers. I downloaded the latest driver but that didn't work and I am still getting the same error code 52. I know the F8 trick on start-up that disregards the digital signature of drivers but that is only a temporary fix and definitely NOT what I am looking for. I'm looking for a permanent solution. I would appreciate it if someone could help me out here. Thanks.

Hey! First things first, I'm running an Aspire V3-772g laptop. After the recent Windows 10 update, I was having issues getting past the lock screen (took AGES to get to the point where I could input my password) and it had been a while, so I reformatted ('reset my PC' deleting all files) - this actually didn't solve my problem, so I used Rufus with a Windows 10 iso from Microsoft to delete all partitions and REALLY start fresh. Ever since, the laptop is running like a dream--in all but one respect. It seems like no matter WHAT I do, I CANNOT get my HDMI audio / TV to appear as an option in Playback Devices (yes, disabled devices is ticked). Looking in Device Manager, the High Definition Audio Device has an exclamation mark is throwing a code 10 - device unable to start. I've tried uninstalling it, tried installing all drivers from Intel's V3-772g page including chipset, updated my graphics driver / Realtek / Intel HD audio drivers... and yet, nothing. Ran /sfc, ran /chkdsk, nothing. I read something that led me to believe .NET framework might be part of the issue--and I did actually have quite a bit of difficulty getting 3.5 installed / functional, but I finally did...... and still, nothing!! I'm seriously losing my mind. I'm having to run my surround sound through an auxiliary cable into the laptop, which is just sacrilege and a fraction of the quality. If there is ANYTHING, ANYONE can suggest beyond the above, please do!!

My IDT audio works fine and my laptop's sound works fine, but when I hoop up my laptop to my TV through a HDMI cord I get my laptop's video output displayed on my TV but no sound from my laptop is output to my TV. I think the problem is because there is something wrong with my High Definition Audio Device. It has a yellow triangle next to it with a ! in the middle of the yellow triangle in device manager under Sound, video, and game controllers. And when I click properties on the High Definition Audio Device, it says, " This device cannot start. (Code 10) {Operation Failed} The requested operation was unsuccessful". Any help would be great. Windows 10 is CLEAN installed on a NEW HARD DRIVE. I DID NOT upgrade, windows 10 was clean installed from a disk.

Hi @JS2045 The problem HD audio device you are seeing is the Intel HDMI audio device that needs a driver. I looked around for a W10 driver for the hardware ID you posted, and can't find one. You don't need that device unless you want/need audio through the display port. The only suggestion I can offer would be to try the W7 Intel graphics driver from your notebook's support and driver page, but install it this way...so that you just target the problem audio device... Download, but don't run this graphics driver... http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=4095873&swItemId=ob_127914_1&swEnvOid=4059 Download and install this free file utility.  64 bit is the second file listed. http://www.7-zip.org/ After you install 7-zip, right click on the graphics driver file you downloaded, and select 7-zip from the list of items. Have 7-Zip Extract to: and let it extract the driver to the folder name (sp64360). Go to the device manager and click on the problem Intel HD audio device needing the driver. Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder 7-Zip created. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and see if the driver installs that way. Then reboot. If you explore the driver folder 7-zip created, and open the DisplayAudio folder, you will find the setup informa... while going through my device manager, a yellow triangle sign caught my attention. It is under the "Sound, video and game controllers' labeled as 'Bluetooth Audio Device". When opening the properties, it says that "This device annot start. (Code 10) Object Path Component was not a directory object.

I went to the MSI website (The laptop is a 4 days old MSI GS70-229) and could not find the corresponding driver for this so called "Bluetooth Audio Device". Windows update was unable to find anything, and the "Roll Back Driver" button was disabled. Driver provider is Qualcomm Atheros Communication.

If anyone knows a solution or knows where to get the driver, I would really appreciate if you show me where.

Hi there,

Not a computer expert by any means and would really appreciate your help. I tried to download a 'DVD decoder' that would enable me to watch a DVD that wasn't working on Windows Media the other day. This still didn't work and gave me a far more frustrating problem as well....

The sound has now gone and I have a yellow explanation mark next to my audio device (in device manager) and the device status says 'This device can not start (Code 10)'.

My computer is as follows:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
Model: T7870
AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 Dual
Core Processor 4200+
2.20 GHZ
1.00 GB of RAM

I have tried de-installing and re-installing, got rid of any new downloads, checked for Viruses (using Kapersky), checked the wires and done everything on Windows Troubleshooter a number of times!

I saw a few other threads on this and it all resulted in the poster having to buy a new sound card. Mine is built into my system and this all seems quite fiddly and could cause me to do further damage. Has anyone else got any further advice before I go ahead and do this?

Thanks in advance for any advice given. It is much appreciated!

Sounds like the driver needs updating go to manufacturers website and download the latest drivers to your desktop and unpack the driver to your desktop then go into device manager and right click on the sound card select properties and update driver and follow the hard ware wizard and locate the driver you downloaded.

After many many tries and a couple reformats, I've decided to ask for help instead of trying fixes that have yet to work.

I got this laptop about a week ago from Radio Shack. It came with vista preinstalled and had so much stuff I did not want. I wanted XP cause I have had a fair share of experience with both Vista and XP to come to say Vista is a gigantic resource hog. I wanted to go back to XP because I'm an avid gamer and most gamers use XP.

I downgraded and found all the drivers, and my computer flew. EXCEPT, it had no sound.

I've tried drivers for every laptop known to man and have seen many people fix theirs, but to no avail, none have worked.

I've tried the HD hotfix and it is currently installed.

You need to find out the details of your chipset (Northbridge and Southbridge - the Southbridge is, I believe, the critical one re audio.

Then find through Google a mobo that has that sepecific set of chips and try and find XP drivers for that.

Hey hello everyone, I am new member here. I already checked couple threads with this same title, but I didn't really find any solution.

Here's a thing. Yesterday I went to clean my computer for dust, so I opened case and unplugged all wires. Now everything is backup except there is no sound. In device manager I got that yellow/black '!' next to Realtek AC3'97 Audio. I reinstalled drivers couple times already, but nothing. I mean, I was just cleaning dust...

So I came up with that idea that it might be the problem with the front panel pins, which I probably connected in wrong ways. I don't even know in which way those pins should be facing when connecting. So the motherboard is Asus A8N5X (from 2005, yea old), computer runs on Windows XP SP3. I tried many combinations with those pins, but nothing. I get that yellow/black '!' next to device or I get nothing at all (it won't show the device at all).

I tried reading the manual, but the wire names are different on the actual wires than shown in the manual:

And the names on wires are:

GND (black wire)
GND (black wire)
Mic Bias (yellow)
Mic In (green)
Spkout L (red)
Spkout L (red)
Spkout R (white)
Spkout R (white)

As you can see names duplicates. So I tried various combinations, but nothing. Once looked like I fixed it, after loading Windows up, there was sound icon in the tray, but PC suddenly restarted and next time there was no audio again.

Like I said I unplugged all wires befo... Read more

A:No Audio Output device is installed. CODE 10.

First, the driver from Dell is the only one you should be using.

However, first download the Intel motherboard chipset drivers from Dell and install them, then the Dell sound driver. The chipset drivers define (identify) all the devices on the motherboard and if that is missing or corrupt it could cause the Code 10.

Another problem can be the BIOS. If the sound is disabled in the BIOS that will also cause a Code 10.

The Video will not cause the Code 10. If you have a Video card with HDMI audio, if you connect an HDMI cable most systems will switch the default audio playback device to the HDMI but that's all.

One problem I see, although it may not directly affect audio is you only have 2GB of RAM. That is very minimum RAM and your 64 bit OS will do nothing extra with 2GB of RAM. You could have the 32 bit OS version and it would work exactly the same. 64 bit OS takes advantage of memory over 4GB. Under 4GB it works exactly like a 32bit OS. Consider upgrading the memory. The entire PC will work better.

After restoring my laptop I now get the following error for "High definition audio device" in device manager: This device cannot start. (Code 10){Operation Failed}The requested operation was unsuccessful.  First thing I tried was updating all drivers which did not change anything. I then tried reinstalling the driver provided on the hp support site as well as uninstalling through device manager and installing again from the hp support site. I have also tried fully restoring my laptop and reinstalling Windows but this has not solved it. I am not sure if this is an issue from the driver provided online or if it is my laptop. I have tried running the "find and fix audio playback problems" tool which just suggests updating/reinstalling the driver... Windows audio is already started in Services. I have checked for the upper/lower filter entry in regedit, which weren't there. Can anyone help advising what else I can troubleshoot or if there is another site I can use to try download this driver? Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

i did a clean Win 10 Pro install on my iMac 21,5" Mid 2011 and on my Macbook Air (no Bootcamp, no Mac OSX) and on both Computers, i get no Sound from the (Intel?) High Definition Audio Controller "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C20&SUBSYS_72708086&REV_05" with the Device-Manager saying "Das Ger?t kann nicht gestartet werden. The same (Intel) Audio-Interface was working on Win 7 on both iMac and Macbook without any problem, and even now, after Reseting the SMC/EFI of my iMac, i get a loud Apple welcome-sound after switching on the Computer. The default basic function Microsoft HD Audio Codec should only be used if nothing else is available. The PC vendor's audio driver is the preferred as non vendor drivers in many cases either do not work or do not work correctly.

The code 52, along with the digital signing, could also be malware on the PC according to what I see doing a google search.

Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the sound device and then LEFT click "Uninstall". Also check the box to uninstall drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts try to install the correct vendor sound driver.

A:This device cannot start (Code 10) with Rocksmith Realtone Cable (USB Audio)

Well I formatted my ssd and installed Win 7 64x Pro on it. Firs thing I did after updating GPU drivers was plug the cable in, and lo and behold, it worked instantly.
I think it has to do with the fact that Microsoft made the drivers for USB ports for win 8.1, as opposed to how Intel made them for win 7. But, this is just a speculation

Hi Guys,
New to this forum, have searched this problem on the internet but found no answer. I have had to recently re-install Windows XP after a nasty virus wrecked my computer. Everything was working great afterwards except the sound. In the Device Manager it says that my sound hardware (C-Media AC97 Audio Device) is there but has a yellow exclaimation mark on it. I have tried updating drivers through windows, uninstalling and re-installing, and deleting and re-installing. But every time I get an error message This device cannot start (Code 10).
I have downloaded Belarc and have my computer spec if it is relevant(what a piece of software btw).
PS. I'm not exactly a computer whizz!!

I'm trying to fix an hp pavillion dv6704nr laptop running windows vista home premium. It has the little red x on the speaker in the lower right hand corner. The owner said it has been there for some months. I have tried downloading the current audio drivers for the computer but every time I try to install the driver, I get an error that says the device couldn't be found.

The first time i restarted the computer, after the driver installation failed, the audio came back and worked fine, until I had to restart the computer. Now I keep getting the same error and nothing i have found so far online has helped.

There are no yellow triangles in the device manager and the device list isn't showing the category for "sound, video and gaming etc." at all.

Please help. I did a search but the other threads didn't solve this problem for me.
Thanks in advance.

A:No audio device installed error and devices wont show in Device Manager

I see three different audio driver packages at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...ct=3646926#N661.You need to find the right one to install. If you install one and the system doesn't work properly...please uninstall it before trying the next one.Installing the wrong one won't do anything harmful to your system...it just won't do any good to leave it installed.Louis

During Windows backup, which wants to backup the 'C' drive and my games drive 'E' (for some reason), I get the following error message after the 'C' backup has completed but not the 'E':

'The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎12‎-‎20T06:00:25.459859400Z' has failed with following error code '0x8078012D' (The operation failed due to a device error encountered with either the source or the destination. If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run CHKDSK /R on the source or destination volume, and then retry the operation.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.'

I ran CHKDSK \R and received several errors of the type: 'A disk read error occurred 0000185. The disk does not have enough space to replace bad clusters detected in file xxxxxx of name xxxxxx.'

My 'E' drive is 2TB with 205GB free. I really don't believe that the cluster(s) in error are bigger than 205G, but what do I know?

Anyone have experience with this problem?

Hi All, I've been struggling for about a month.  Since I reinstalled Windows 10 Home (1067) (on a new SSD) the 100-15IBY Camera and High Definition Audio Driver has failed with Code 52 unable to verify digital signature. Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52) I've tried everything... permissions on files, bcedit command lines, downloading newer drivers from Realtek, reinstalling windows again with Legacy and then UEFI modes... disabling Secure Boot, reinstalling again with Secure Boot in "Setup - Disabled" mode... The only way to get the audio and camera to operate is to reboot in safe mode and disable the Driver Signature Enforcement - that only works for a single boot.  So I know the drivers are correct and the devices work... it's a trust issue with the drivers. The High Definition Audio one is specifically a Microsoft Driver... why wouldn't that be trusted!? Please anyone?  It must be a common problem - has anyone solved it? Tony

I have a Toshiba HL DT ST DVDRRW GSA-H30L in an HP D4650Y PC that has suddenly stopped working. The light blinks but the disk will not load. In the device mgr , there is a yellow ! and when investigated further, the info states:" A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)" I appears that all the drivers are there, but something else is locking it out. Any ideas ? Thanks as always.

I made the stupid mistake of trying to install a HP CD writer 9100 on my W2K system, and now neither it nor my Plextor SCSI CDR will work. I uninstalled the 9100 software and removed it, but I still get the device manager error under my Plextor drive:

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

This device depends on another device that is not functioning correctly.

I have also tried removing and reinstalling the Plextor but to no avail.
Apparently the old HP software did something bad to my system. Can someone help?

I tried to install support for my Epson 1650 scanner on a Laptop running XP/SP3 but installation has failed.

The 'new hardware found' wizard started; becsuse I had run this scanner on this laptop some months ago, I elected to allow XP to install the driver (usbscan.sys I guess) automatically. The installation failed with a message telling me that the registry information for this device was either incomplete or damaged.

In device manager the device has a yellow warning triangle. When I look at the properties for the device I get a similar message, along with 'Code 19' in the message.

Re-installing the drivers from the Epson product CD does not eliminate the problem. I would really like to avoid having to re-install Windows. Is there some way i can figure out what is wrong in the registry and fix it?

Good Morning

I've recently built a new machine, all was working fine and dandy, until i decided to install a 2nd HD. Now when I boot up the computer my wireless NIC gets this error in the Device Manager. "This device could not start (error code 10)"

At first I searched the internet for possible causes, and all results pointed to a driver issue. I know this can't be the case, if I unplug the HD, no error code. I spoke with an IT person at my company and he told me to check the interrupts on the BIOS.

I did as the tech told me but everything in the BIOS is set to auto. Im curious if anyone has any other troubleshooting steps i can take.

Since I am at work I do not have all the model numbers and such

Here is what i do have though

OS: Windows XP sp1 ( I will upgrade to sp2 tonight)
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 64
Wireless card: WDA-1320 driver 1.30 latest from DLINKs site.

i also have a 750w power supply so I dont think this is the cause of the problem

If you need any more info I will be glad to post it once Im home tonight

Hi Jzocco, and welcome to TSF.

Strange though it may seem, SP2 may well solve your problems, but post back and let us know if it doesn't, and i'll research your problem further.

First post, so sorry if this is not in the correct thread.

I am trying to connect my sisters computer (XP home edition) to the internet. We have a livebox connected to one computer and we are using a Thompson Speedtouch 121 G to connect my computer to the livebox. Using the same device I am trying to connect the final computer.

I downloaded the latest driver and installed it as instructed but before the driver finishes installing i get an error message - Device failed to start (code 10), or something close to that. I have searched all over for an answer, the computer has hardly been used and was previous connected to the internet but stopped working, so i uninstalled the driver and am trying to reinstall.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You might look this up at google. I found some info not at the microsoft page anymore but under the "cached" section of the search results. I tried to link to it but it kept coming up wrong for some reason, no matter how I tried to go about it.

I just noticed that the DVD drive of my Sony laptop (Win 8.1x64) has a yellow exclamation mark in device manager with the following error message:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the device with no luck. Any hint? Thanks

UPDATE: I solved the issue. I googled and found that by deleting the UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters value from the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} the issue is fixed. (In my case I had an UpperFilters)

Yes, I can not stress enough how everyone on Windows 8 or even 7 for that matter, should refrain from installing software with drivers that latch onto the default optical driver.

In many cases, it is a bsod waiting to happen.

If software like this is installed, always latest and keep it up to date too.

If anyone knows they have something like this, visit the maker's website and update the software to new.
