Preferred Solution: unable to edit registry, task manager greyed out & unable to install any app

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you formatted the hdd and installed Windows from a legit source then I would think....if malware is involved...either
an external drive or your router is reinfecting your computer.

What source for Windows are you using to install Windows?

A:Unable to install new apps, registry, task manager greyed out

Hello and welcome aszx mate first of all can you get into safe mode if so do these

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

Second how did you format the drive I always wipe them formatting is ok but always carries a risk of "residue". Having said that the drive itself could be going south too.

Addit: Please get some security on board MSE is free and quite good.

Task Manager and Control Panel missing, unable to edit registry. The PC just wants to download more and more "malware fixers". I believe that it succeeded in downloading a couple of programs before I shut down internet access to the PC. It appears to have loaded the bad stuff into the c:\documents and settings\Administrator\local settings\temp folder. I tried to delete the executable called "lovtecwmq.exe" but cannot. I tried to google this program with no luck. In any case, here is the Hijack log:

Hi , I got an alert about W32-Spy bot during Norton AV scan and a file "cbrss.exe" was infected with the above mentioned file. Although the worm and infected file were removed, I am still unable to open my task manager or "regedit". They just get opened for 2 secs and closed then. I also ran HIJACK this on my machine and following are the contents of the files. I also unable to surf on the internet smoothly and it usually does't work. Any quick help would be greatly appreciated. (I also went through the similar postings in the forum but I did 't want to remove the files on my own. You can shut it down and rename the file. If you need it Process Explorer makes a good process killer.

It's probably this

Hi all

I was infected which greyed out my task manager. Also when starting task manager or registry editor with command prompt was impossible. an error message saying that these functions were disabled by my administrator popped up.
Scanning with McAfee and BitDefender did not solve the issue. I ran CCLeaner but this did not do the trick and I tried Malwarebytes as well but (I think) the virus prevented it from running. You can run the Chameleon function of Malwarebytes but this did not help either.
Luckily with COmbofix my task manager and registry editor are accessible once again but Malwarebytes refuses to start and I also notice that Notepad prevents me from saving files. when I want to do save as, notepad crashes and I can do no more else then closing it with task manager.
I ran DDS and this is the log:

I recently have encountered a problem with my laptop. Everytime i boot it up and try to load a program it doesnt load and i get the error message "Failure to display security and shut down options" when pressing ctrl+alt+delete to access the options. I have also tried pressing ctrl+shift+esc to access the task manager directly but no luck. I uninstalled google chrome as I tried system restore and it said it was not restored due to a google update file. THere is no web broswer installed at the moment, and any attempts to install or run a program are met with the computer freezing and not responding. Any help would be grealty appreciated as i dont want to fresh install windows onto this computer and lose all settings and configurations for the programs and such.

It seems as if some things do need Internet Explorer even though there's no direct mention of that. Before doing a System Restore to a date before the problem or a Factory Restore [loses everything] I'd go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and turn Internet Explorer back on in "Turn Windows features on or off". I'd like to be rid of IE but a number of the Microsoft sites I access require it.

IE occasionally loses the homepage setting and it goes to "about blank". I found a fix on a forum that explained how to edit the start page key in the registry. This has worked OK for me a couple of times but since 8.1 upgrade the registry will not accept any changes. Tried following the permissions change as in How do you make changes to thge registry in Windows 8 but still not accepting the new value. May be a coincidence with the upgrade but it's worked before. Have done a system scan to check for malware etc and nothing showing (Bitdefender). Any ideas?

A:Unable to edit registry.

Hello Mal,

It sounds like you may need to take ownership of the Main key in the registry first, set permissions second, then you should be able to modify the Start Page string value.
Internet Explorer Home Page - Add or Change - Windows 7 Help Forums

(Main Home Page)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Start Page string value (right pane)
(Secondary Home Pages)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Secondary Start Pages string value (right pane)
If the above fails, then you might see if you may be able to specify a default home page instead.

Internet Explorer Home Page - Specify and Prevent Changing - Windows 7 Help Forums

Hope this helps,
Shawn

As my machine doesn't support SLAT in HyperV I am using VMlite XP mode to run some 16 bit programs I need. Very occaisionally VMlite hangs on close after it has saved state or shutdown the guest machine.

I go to task manager and click end task on the Workstation GUI and it closes but very occaisionally end task wont closed the program. Sign off wont close the program either and restarting hangs at the blue screen 'restarting' I have to push the reset button on the tower to get the machine to restart.

Is there any hidden way of closing VMlite so I dont have to restart, a sort of hard end task?

Tim

A:Unable to end task in task manager Win8.1 x64 and VMlite.

Hi there
I believe vmlite XP mode is non Ms official software - XPmode is licensed and distributed solely by Ms. Anybody else who incorporates this product into their offerings whether freeware or not runs the risk of serious copyright infringements.

For 16 bit software you could try using a win95 VM - works fine !!!(use FREE VBOX or VMWARE player to create the VM).
I'm not sure but a W98 VM might work too -- there's a generic key on the web and plenty of ISO's --this is now abandonware so the generic keys are legit.

Cheers

I am unable to run the task manager (taskmgr.exe).

I just finished using LimeWire (LW) and closed the program afterwards. Later, I see the LW icon in the bottom right (notification area). So I hovered above it and it closed. Then after that, LW kept popping up again, running itself, even when I didnt click the icon to run LW.
It came up every 30 seconds or so.

I wanted to see if the LW process was still running in taskmanager... so I pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL, and nothing happened.
If I try running it from Start>Run, I get this message: "Another program is currently using this file"

In addition, my computer tower keeps making weird sounds every 30 seconds. You know when your virtual memory is going low and your computer "makes those sounds" from the tower? That is what is happening (it usually happens only when my computer is slow, which is not that often).

I've restarted my computer, and uninstalled LimeWire (for now).

But taskmanager is still not working

Hello, this is my first post on the forum and I'll try to be as detailed as I can.

Today I noticed that Windows 7's task manager is no longer loading. Now I think it would be best if I tell you the things I have tried. This will save you the time or telling me something I've already tried.

I've ran the SCF command at an elevated command prompt, it gets to 44% and then stops with a message that it found some corrupt files but is unable to fix them. I got halted with that approach at that step. Trying to run it from boot turned out to be a nightmare. (I'm still going to tinker with trying to make SFC run off the disk or a USB drive)

The next thing I tried was to extract the taskmgr.exe file from the Install.wim file on the CD. I managed to get a copy of taskmgr.exe off the disk and replaced the one in my system32 folder, still nothing happens.

Did the group policy edit thing as well as the reg trick but still no go.

I've scanned my PC with Malwarebytes Antimalware and also ran Hijack this to look for new entries. Everything it shows is supposed to be there, and Mbam finds nothing.

The only thing out of the ordinary to happen today is I installed the Project64 emulator. Avast popped up when I ran it for the first time and recommened i run it in the sandbox. I didn't though. I've had that program before on previous installs of Windows (Yes I've reinstalled it about 4 times over the last 2.5 years. Seems to just corrupt over all by itself (way to go MS)

Lastly I've scoured... Read more

Hi all,

Well, I have been fighting this virus/spyware/adware, or something for the last three days, I have downloaded Spybot, Malwarebytes's antimalware, AVG antivirus, Firefox, smitRem, Ad-aware, and window defender to kill it but it keeps respawn up.

So when i went to the Window Task manager, there is a program with 3 to 4 set of random letter like "cdtq cpv ikkc yavxyqr," and i click on end task, but then it keep coming up. Sometime my firewall is disable and sometime a compunent of AVG is disable.

Sometime noise of an Ad come out on my speaker and then it stop for about thirty mim then the same message would speak out loud.

I have tried everything i know as an average computer guy to kill it but no luck, it keeps coming back next time i turn on my computer.

So guys, any thought?

Oh and i have to leave for about a month so do you think it is a good idea to use logmein, to remote control my home computer?

Thank You,
Peaceful River

I am unable to access the task manager now and no desktop icons or task bar appears when I start the machine. Also I can only start with Safe mode with and with out command now. I also cant right click on the desktop. Not sure how to get the command line or start menu when i cant get to explorer.exe from the task manager. Please help I just installed Kaspersky and had a tought time removing McAfee site advisor. When install finished I was about to fix a regedit error, because jpg images were not showing up with IE 6. Now the task manager problem has arose where before i could at least access task bar when trying to fix my TCP/IP problem along with regedit not being found. I believe this has all stemmed from a torrent download of Microsoft office and the pc was not protected because it was just purchased used last week. I would appreciate any help.

Thank you

A:unable to access the task manager

Hello rcg1078,

That is a good reason to stay away from torrents.

If you can only boot the system in Safe Mode try running a system restore back to

a point before the problem this may allow you to temporarily access the system.

At this point since the system is fairly new maybe you don't have tons of stuff loaded

I recommended that you do a clean install on the system As far as the system not

being protrected this is the first thing that you should do before adding programs on the

system.

I am using Windows XP SP2 on a PIII. I was browsing the Internet 2 days ago, and I think I allowed a certain pop-up that has caused this issue:

The visible problems are

1. Registry editor does not load. If I go to Run and type 'regedit', it opens a black command prompt-type window, the title bar of which says 'regedit.com'. Typing 'regedit.exe' works fine, so I deleted the file regedit.com. Now typing 'regedit' works, but I'm sure it'll come back.
2. Task Manager does not open at all. I am able to click on the context-menu item 'Task Manager', but it does not load.
3. System Restore is unable to restore to any point.

I've followed all the 5 steps to be done before posting. Adaware found a few objects and I fixed them all. But my issue has not been resolved.

I'm not sure if this is a browser hijack, so please let me know if I need to look elsewhere. Thank you in advance for your time.

I was using the internet, then all of sudden, "Advanced Virus Remover" popped up and said I had many viruses. The desktop background of my computer, turned to a big blue background that said "Your System is Infected"System has beep stopped due to a serious malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected. It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss."

Advanced Virus Remover kept on popping up and scanning, but I knew it was already a fake spyware program so I closed it. Then my computer slowed down, and I tried to open up Task Manager by Ctrl-Alt-Delete, but then it said "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator." or "Application cannot be executed. The file is infect. lease activate your antivirus program.

I later tried to run Malwarebytes, but after a minute or so of running it, the computer would either restart or freeze. Then I'm unable to move the mouse around.
Soon after, I tried booting it into Safe Mode by pressing F8. But once I clicked on Safe Mode, it would compile a list of something, and it would restart once again. But I don't know why it's doing that either.

I'm not sure what to do anymore, and I'm getting really scared and I'm worrying about it. I already disabled the internet from that computer because I read somewhere I'm supposed to.

Can anyone help me, I'm freaking out right now. And I will try to cooperate as best as I can.

Hi

A few days ago...well... more like a few weeks ago my task manager would not be able to kill any processes. When I try to quit a process it says:

"Operation could not be completed. Access is denied."

Now i don't know what to do. I tried to search for a solution but i didnt find one.

Now I've been having this other problem. My computer has been slowing down a lot. Not too slow but slow enough to be annoying.
Also there is this other problem. Whenever I try to run a program that uses a lot of CPU or RAM the computer shuts down by itself. No warnings. No nothing. Just shuts down. Then when I turn it back on it WON'T turn on. What I mean is that when I try to turn it back On, the PC will turn on but the fan won't turn on and the monitor won't either.

Well that about sums up all the Problem's I've been having.
Let me list them out again.
1. The task manager problem
2. The slowing down problem
3. The unexpected computer turning off when i use a heavy program. Example is: Nero, Video Converter etc.

I hope you guys can help.

I have been told to get a new PC but I think I can do with this one for 1 more year.

Hello!

I have an issue that has just occurred today. (I have used the search function but I didn't really find something that I could use.) When I booted up my computer, the screen would pause at the Welcome screen and then slowly show my Desktop's Wallpaper. There was no Shortcut Icons, Taskbar, or anything. So I assumed that explorer.exe was not working. So, I attempted to CTRL+ALT+DEL for the Task Manager. However, even the Task Manager didn't work!

Then, I attempted to load Windows on Safe Mode. Fortunately, it was able to load the Taskbar, the Icons, and the Task Manager. So I went ahead and did my usual maintenance w/ Spybot, Ad-Aware, CCleaner, AVG Antispyware. After that, I rebooted the computer and got the same result. Explorer.exe not loading and neither will Task Manager when I try CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Just an update, I tried to approach this differently by fixing my User Account to be Password Protected. Now when I try to log in from the log-in screen, it just freezes and doesn't go to the Desktop.

I will provide my HiJackThis log (This is from Safe Mode since I can't boot the comp normally) to see if you guys can find any sort of problem with this.

Thank you.

Before starting please note the following:

Do not attach logs, use code or quote boxes. Just copy and paste the text unless directed otherwise
Even if things appear to be better, it does not mean we have finished. Follow my instructions and reply back until I tell you that your computer is clean.
Please reply using the Add Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen
Please track this topic by clicking on the Follow this Topic button on the top right on this tread => select Receive Notification => Instantly => click on the black Follow this Topic button

On a machine running Windows 8.1 64 bit, about once every few minutes the mouse will not be able to click on anything.  For exampe, if a window is open in the Google browser, the red x at the top right corner turns grey and the mouse will not be able to close the window.  One way to fix this is to open the task manager, (the mouse will click on task manager) click on google and then close the task manager and then the mouse will work for another 5 minutes or so.

I have tried changing the usb port the mouse is on. I am thinking of doing a repair install with the OS disk but not sure if that would help. I have tried to fix the mouse driver but I am not to sure how 8.1 works, at one point it said it was fixing something but the problem still persists.

The same problem occurs when I use Firefox instead of Chrome.

Thanks in advance for any help

It sounds like something is stealing focus.  You can try running Window Focus Logger to help you determine if another program or process is stealing focus.  (Note: When downloading, use "Softpedia Secure Download (US)".  The other download mirror is dead.)  The zip package contains two versions of the program - a Command Line version and a GUI version.  I would suggest you use the GUI version.  This program requires .Net Framework 4, so you will need to install that as well.  Please read the included Readme for instructions on how to use the program.

My Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 7 was working fine until yesterday evening.

When I turn it on, it loads the Log In screen and I am able to type in my password and log in. However, after that I am presented with a black screen and a white cursor. It will not let me open Task Manager and when I press alt, ctrl and delete, after a few minutes I get this error message "Failure to display security and shut down options".

I have tried System Restore but had no luck with that.

I am not able to run in Safe Mode either, it constantly freezes.

My laptop did not come with a Windows 7 operating CD.

Howdy,

It may have a hidden recovery partition that may set the PC back to when you bought it but you will loose all data and updates if it has one and works. on start up try Ctrl + F11

IF YOU HAVE IMPORTANT DATA THEN TAKE THE HARD DRIVE OUT FIRST AND BACKUP THE DATA ON ANOTHER PC.

Hello.
I am unable to exit Windows Metro interface applications without launching Task Manager. Is there any fix for this?

Thanks, MD678685

A:Unable to exit Metro Apps without using Task Manager

No. When you hit alt-tab metro apps go to suspended mode, but they still use RAM.

Hello em1992,If both normal and safe mode booting are not working, you could try Last Known Good Configuration from the Advanced Boot Options Menu.If that doesn't work, my suggestion would be to post in the Bleeping Computer's Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs Forum for two reasons. First, it would be a good idea to rule out malware as a cause and second, they have the tools and know how to help you get a non-booting system up and running.

I know i my computer is infected with a virus. I have the free avg anti-virus that constantly picks up spyware/malaware but the popups continue to get worse. I have tried to follow the 5 steps, but after 2 failed attempts at a Panda Scan (my computer crashes/freezes due to the popups/viruses fairly often and i was unable to successfully complete a panda scan) I will submit my DSS log file in hopes you can help me. I apologize in advance for my offensive username, any help will be appreciated. The types of popups i get are all offers for rogue anti-spyware programs. win anti virus pro 2007, antispy storm, etc. Thanks for your time,
sam
