Problem Backing Up To Flash Drive

Q: Problem Backing Up To Flash Drive

I use Microsoft Money 2004 to keep track of my household and personal expenses and I also use a flash drive to back-up my financial database in case of disaster and I am experiencing a problem that has me scratching my head.

Microsoft Money automatically backs up the database to a location on my hard drive every time I exit the program. I also do a 'manual' back-up to a flash drive about once a week and this is where the problem comes up.

I am using a San Disc 4 Gig 'Cruzer' U3 type flash drive. I have disabled the U3 function on the flash drive. Whenever I try to back-up my financial data base Microsoft Money gives me a message that the 'floppy disc in 'F' drive is full, please insert a second disc to finish the back-up'. If I simply click on 'Continue' the program supposedly finishes the back-up.

The compressed size of the database as reported by my Microsoft Money program is 600 Meg and I have 2.5 Gig free on my flash drive so I can't figure out why I would be getting this message but I am very concerned as to the security of my back-ups.

I have checked all of the settings in Microsoft Money and I can't see anything amiss.

I have several questions:

1) Why am I seeing this message?

2) What has happened to cause this message?

3) Is this a problem? IE: Do I think I have a back-up but in reality I don't have a back-up?

4) How do I fix this problem or do I just go ahead and ignore it?

Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Problem Backing Up To Flash Drive

Well, IMO first step would be to make sure that your flash drive indeed has the letter F. Maybe it changed from the last time you've backed up?

Also, if you don't have anything important on the flash drive, you could format it. If you have Windows Vista and up - you could format it with NTFS partition type.

I am using Windows Vista. I bought a 32 GB Transcend brand Flash Drive to back up my document, music and picture files. The document and picture files don't amount to much, but there are quite a few songs in the ITunes Library. But I think 32 GB should handle it. However, when I use the backup wizard, it fails in the process and says the backup failed because "The system cannot find the file specified 0x80070002." I have no idea what they're referring to and no idea how to get it to work. This flash drive was not inexpensive, so I'd really like to figure out how to make it work. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Recently I purchased a Dell Dimension E521 with Windows Vista Home Basic installed. I am just learning how to use and navigate this system. I went out & bought a 1 gig flash drive to back up my stuff and found that I am not given the option to use a flash drive for back up. The only options are disc or harddrive. Also backup can be done through a network which is not applicable. Can you help me to find out how to use a flash drive? I have USB ports in the front of the computer. Dell refuses to give tech advice on this issue because they say they don't want responsibility for corruption of data. (Big surprise) They felt comfortable enough to direct me to a pay-for-it Tech service provided by Dell that would cost me $125.00 for resolution of this one issue.

A:help with backing up file and or system using flash drive.

1gb is not a lot of data these days

if all you want is data - then keep everything in my documents folder and just copy that to the flashdrive

what do you use as email?? - you may need to back this up also - and the files will be in a different place depending on the email you use

But if you want to backup windows and all the programs you will need a lot more space.

did you get a DVD writer with the PC - you could also backup to this

This will take some explaining,

I have a Windows 10 PC and a Patriot Flash Drive. I am using the Windows 10 built-in back up utility with the option that Windows 10 provides "Looking For an Old BackUp? It will still work in Windows 7."

I have IE set as my default browser in Windows 10, just to keep everything OK with Microsoft as they either want IE or Edge as the default when Windows 10 Updates.

At any rate, I have been using Firefox more and more as my main browser for several years, because I like it better than IE 11 or Edge. I play a bunch of games at a website and bookmark those games in Firefox, because they have no sound in IE for whatever reason. That's not my problem though.

When I go into my Backup Settings on Windows 10 and see My Backup Folders, and look at them, it only shows my Backups for IE. Is there a way that I can add my Bookmarks stored in my Firefox profile to my Windows 10 folders to back up without messing up something? How would I do that?

To make it easier, I also have my Bookmarks backed up one One Drive and Google Drive.

Is there a reason your not doing Windows updates? Your missing SP1. Also, not having an Anti-Virus program is like shooting craps.

A good Anti-Virus program that is Free to use and is highly recommended here is: Microsoft Security Essentials and or Avast. http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/mse.aspx

Only have one Anti-Virus program installed at a time, otherwise the computer will not be a happy camper...

So, I got a RiDATA 32GB flashdrive, FAT32 formatted, when suddenly, all my files went corrupt, then the flashdrive went to Read Only, RAW status. I have tried wiping clean the partition and crating a new partition out of it, but it ultimately failed as the flash drive didn't repair itself after that. This is the same problem that I had in this forum post before:

I was hoping if there is a similar software that can work for this flash drive, if so, I'm open to suggestions.

My new Precision 3520 mobile workstation is down after only 3 days of use, OS won't start normally. I decided to return it anyway.
So I need to back up hard drive data first. But new problems prevented me from doing it...
Info on my Precision 3520:OS: Ubuntu 16.04HDD: Seagate ST500LM021, 500GB 7200RPM
What I did:Take out the Precision 3520 hard drive, and connect it as a USB device to my old Inspiron N5050 laptop (runs windows 7). The connection is done via an Insignia SATA-to-USB 3.0 converter, it worked fine with other HDD of comparable model (a Seagate Momentus 5400.6, 500GB 5400RPM).
Problem:Upon connection, the driver is successfully installed, but the HDD shows up as having only 2GB size, with only OS files inside. The rest 400+GB of disk, with user data, can't be found.
How to solve this?
Just in case if you need this -- the Precision 3520 can't enter OS desktop. After displaying the Ubuntu start up logo, it got stuck there with black screen, keyboard not responsive, but the following error message pops on and off once every 2-3 seconds:[***:*****] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: PCIe bus error: severity=corrected, type=data link layer, id=00e0(transmitter ID)[***:*****] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: device [8086:a111] error status/mask=00001000/00002000[***:*****] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: [12] Replay timer timeout (Note: those *** are some random numbers)
Running the pre-boot hardware diagnosis shows all devices are normal. And it can still enter BIOS setting.

p5200, an ISO won't do you much good. You can create an image backup on usb drives, I recommend two for your machines. Also you will need to create a recovery disk or use your original windows 7 disk. create two recovery disks, one for each system and you should be fine.

There are other alternatives that are cheap or free to create images for your machines.

My computer no longer recognizes the cd drive/burner on my dektop PC, and I think the problem is related to a removeable USB flash drive.

It's a really old Compaq Presario with an added cd burner(drive d now), and the original cd rom(drive e). My PNY usb flash drive installed some software(drivers I think) when I 1st ran it, and shows up as drive f.

Worked fine a couple of times, but then the lights went out on the cd burner(drive d), it would not open, and it didn't even show up on "My Computer" either.

Searched on internet awhile, and read something about a flash drive problem, so I removed the flash drive from the USB slot, restarted the computer, and both cd drives re-appeared, and worked fine, as long as I removed the flash drive, and turned computer off after burning cd. But I forgot, and left it on for several hours, and now even when I remove the flash drive, and restart computer the 2 cd drives don't show up on "my computer". The cd rom(drive e) light comes on, and will open, but the burner(drive d) light is off, and will not open. Neither drive registers on "My Computer". The flash drive still reads as drive f, even with no drive d, or e.(lol)

Suggestions anyone?
Thanks in advance.

I have read the related thread from earlier this month (370606 - External USB Hard Drive Not Recognized) and wonder if anyone can help with my issue.

I am also curious what everyone thinks of the end of that thread regarding a better cable - Maxtor tech. support did not confirm that story for me? Is that in fact a better cable than what Maxtor ships with their drives?

I have a 1 month old Dell, 4 month old external hard drive, and 8 month old flash memory. All work separately. However, when I have the external hard drive plugged in and working, and then plug in the flash memory it will not be recognized. If I have the flash memory plugged in and working, and then plug in the external hard drive it will not be recognized. The only difference is that in the first case the external hard drive will continue to be readable by XP, while in the second case XP doesn't lose touch with the flash memory but it will show it (incorrectly) as empty.

Both externals and all ports are USB 2.0.

The flash drive is assigned to E. The external had been assigned to E as well, but I have now changed it to P. I am on a network so F through O are taken.

The PC is a standard university issue (Pentium 4, quite a bit of memory and capabilities, but nothing excessive).

The external drive is a Maxtor Personal Series 3100 80Gb USB 1.1/2.0.

The flash memory is a 64 Mb. Dell Memory Key.

In my PC (Windows 7 Professional - 32 Bit Operatins System - Service Pack 1 installed) whenever I plug in Flash Drive, the system creates short cut for all the folders in the Flash Drive. The folders and its contents are safe.

But I am unable to Safely Dismount the Flash Drive and the system on choosing Eject the Drive will display "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again." message.

If I go through My Computer - Right Click on Flash Drive and then Eject the system shows the following message

"F: is Currently in Use. Save any Open Files on this disc, and then close the files or programs
using the files before trying again. If you choose to continue, the files will be closed, which might cause data to be lost.

Cancel Try Again Continue"

If we choose Continue, system displays "Safe to Remove Hardware".

WHY THIS IS HAPPENING ??

I am having a laptop with same OS and there when I plug in the flash drive it does not create any short cut and no such problems.

Both the systems are having Symantec Endpoint Protection version 12.1.671.4971 and are upto date on Virus Siglature update.

I recently purchased a 32 GB San Disk Flash Drive. The security files pre-installed on the drive were junk, and I could not delete them so I formatted the drive to remove them. This cleaned the disk, and it holds data, but I'm not sure if this is part of my problem. I am trying to load my copy of windows 7 onto this disk, and using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool, I can select my ISO file, but when I go to select my USB drive, my computer does not recognize the flash drive as a flash drive. Is there a way to change the Flash Drive so Windows will recognize my Flash Drive as removable media? Smaller USB drives still work on my computer, so its not the computer. Anyone have any suggestions?

You also might check in Device Manager to see if the stick shows up as a USB device, or a hard disk.

"Works cannot open the file you selected. The file may be corrupted or may be a file type that the spreadsheet cannot be open. If you have a back up copy of the file, try opening that copy, or try opening the file in a program that you created it in."

Does the USB drive work in the Windows 7 machine? With the USB Drive still plugged in, go to Start (The Windows Orb) then type diskmgmt.msc in the Search Bar.

Does the USB drive show up in Disk Management and what is the filesystem reported by windows, it should be NTFS, if it shows RAW then the Master File Table has been corrupted, this happens when you remove the drive from the computer without stopping the USB Port, Stopping / Ejecting the drive is done from either the TaskBar near the clock, or from Windows Explorer.

If it is RAW format, you will need to reformat the USB Drive, please note the any data on the drive will be gone.

Well, upon plugging in the device, it searches for drivers and finds none. So now I am completely at a loss as to what to do now.

Hey!

Having a very strange problem with my 4GB Stig Memory Stick ... there's a folder on it that had 2 small pdf files (for college) that now says it's 54.5GB.

Within this folder are other folders and files that my laptop can't read. They have nonsense names on them ... literally random letters and numbers. I've tried deleting the whole file, deleting individual files (within the folder) & formatting the whole drive. It's causing problems with some other files (mainly .avi files) ... sometimes they work, sometimes they don't so can't be totally sure that it's related but call it an educated guess.

Any ideas?? I wouldn't be totally clueless when it comes to computers but i've never seen this before!

Thanks!!

When plugged into a USB drive it opens IE and allows me to put the alarm password and other settings in the drive to be transferred to the alarm system. I had Win 7 when I got the alarm and the drive worked on it.
I now have a new computer with Win 10 and I cannot get the drive to work on it. The drive shows in my computer and I can open it and see the contents.
The problem is that it will not connect to the SimpleSafe wizard on this PC but it will work on a small Acer notebook that has Win 10 upgraded from Win 8.1
I uninstalled the antivirus and turned off windows firewall and that did not help. the company is sending me a new drive but since this one works on the notebook, the drive is probably not the problem.

Something on his machine caused a change on the MBR on the stick. Have you tried a repair?

There should not have to be any drivers to be installed. Windows should see it, unless you keep that drive encrypted.

You always keep a local copy or cloud copy of something like this.

You may want to check OneDrive to see if it saved a copy of the Thesis.

As for the fix. It could also be that the drive was on its last legs. There are some programs out there that you can try and recover off of the device. majorgeeks.com has them in their downloads.

How can I fix this problem?

most likely a static charge or something else has damaged the drive and rendered it inoperable. if true, the drive is useless and cannot be repaired.

Here's the problem, whenever I pop in my 1GB Cruzer Micro flash drive, autoplay opens up and shows me this

There is no CD on the flash drive at all, I have tried formatting the flash drive and it still comes up whenever I plug in the flash drive, and it shows up as a CD Drive in "My Computer"

Is there way I can get rid of that CD Drive that keeps popping up when I plug in my flash drive?

A:Flash Drive Problem

There's nothing wrong with your USB drive.

Cruzer's open as two drives, usually. At least the three of mine do. Windows treats the Cruzer OS (U3 Launcher) as a CD drive, and the actual data section as a normal drive. You can safely ignore the CD messages and just close that window. If you use Windows Explorer to look at the files from that window you see, it makes it hard to remove the USB drive. With a Cruzer, you have to open the drive's Explorer window from the U3 system icon, so it will eject properly.

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with my SanDisk Flash Drive. I got it when I bought my PC but when I plug it it states me only 8MB when it is stated on the pen drive that it is 1GB. I check with Acronis Disk Director and it detect only 8MB and same with Windows Disk Management.

What can be the problem? How could I repair it and restore the 1GB storage?
Thanks in advance.

A:Flash drive problem

It might just be fake.

If there is nothing on it, I would try a full format with HP USB format utility.

Hello,
Trying to install flash drive and have come across an error message
"error installin iKernel.exe (0x10000)" anyone have any hints??

I am trying to instal from a zipped file that has been down loaded to my desk top... so I can down load fix it programs from my laptop to plug into my desk top that has a virus...

A:Flash Drive Problem

You might have an older version of the InstallShield iKernel engine. Same thing happened to me on an older IBM when I plugged in a new cruzer mini 512MB USB Flash drive. Go to InstallShield and the instructions for the fix are there. I am assuming you are going to use the flash drive to download to on your laptop then transfer to your desktop for the virus fix. If you get hung up on the fix, the guys here are great at that kinda stuff! Hope this helps

When I plug both a Lexar 512mb flash drive and a PNY 512 flash drive into the usb ports of either of two Dell laptops running xp home, both drives work perfectly. The drives appear in Device Manager under Disk Dives, with the usbstor.sys driver, xp's mass storage driver. When I plug the same drives into my Asus P4P800-E Deluxe (Intel 2.8 GHz) running xp pro, I get an "Unrecognized Device" message. The drive doesn't appear under Disk Drives in Device Manager, but an "unknown device" message appears under USB Controllers. All three computers show that usbstor.sys resides in Windows\system32\drivers, but the Asus will not load it or recognize the drive. The only time I've gotten the Asus to recognize the drive is when I removed it in Device Manager and then had Add New Hardware search the XP Pro installation disk for a driver in the folder containing both the usbstor.sys and the usbstor.inf files (I386). Obviously, I can't do this every time I want to use the flash drive. This is the only USB device with any problems. All three machines are running SP2. I've seen several posting on other forums where people are having the same problem with flash drives or similar devices. When they finally get through to tech support, they're told to download usbstor.sys and usbstor.inf. But everyone has the same problem: how to get the machine to load it. Any suggestions?

New information on the same problem: If I plug the flash drive into a usb port before startup, I get "unknown device" under USB Controllers in device manager and my USB Linksys Wireless Receiver becomes disabled. When I unplug the wireless, the flash drive is recognized and works perfectly. Both devices are plugged into the front usb ports of an Asus P4P800-E Deluxe.

I've got an interesting problem. My home XP SP2 machine does not want to recognize flash drives. I have tried several, ranging from an old 64MB Sandisk to a 1GB Kingston U3 that I use each day. Whenever I plug in a flash drive -- to any open port or hub -- CPU utilization goes up to around 65% and stays there. The U3 drive never gets as far as initializing its interface. If I try to open My Computer, the window freezes. I've tried just leaving the flash drive plugged in, but something is stuck in the software and nothing changes. Then, when I remove the CPU-hogging flash drive, the computer freezes completely.
All of these flash drives work in all of the other computers I use. I just hate having to use my laptop to burn a 600MB project to CD just so I can use my primary PC. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thank you for your help.

I have an Apacer 1GB USB stick and I have a problem. Recently when I try to access it by doubleclicking I get an "open with" dialog window. So I have to access it by right click and then select open. When the right click menu pops out there is an "Auto" button on top. How can I get rid of these things. I'm not sure but I think this started happening when some automatic windows update was downloaded and installed. I'm not sure but I don't think that this is the problem but it's worth mentioning. Here are 2 pics to illustrate the problem

I have a question about my flash drive. It's a 4GB PNY and usually works with no problem when I plug it in. But lately when I plug it into my laptop (a 2 month old laptop with Windows 10), it plays a quick tune indicating I plugged it in, but it doesn't actually show up on my screen as available. That's what happened this morning, and I tried both USB ports repeatedly. Now I'm using a different a different computer and now my flash drive registers on the computer with no problem. Also, sometimes I have to plug it in and unplug it several times before it shows up on the screen even on this other computer. Today it had no problem.

Can someone tell me why this stuff happens? Is it a flash drive problem, or a computer problem?

EDIT: Now I'm back on my laptop again and tried the flash drive and it still doesn't appear on the screen. Then I remembered that I have another flash drive that I use as a backup for my files and tried plugging that into my laptop to see if it would work. It didn't. So it appears to be a computer problem after all. Is there a setting that I could change so that I can use a USB flash drive with my laptop again?

I should add that I also inserted a memory card from my digital camera into the memory card slot on the laptop and was surprised that it actually worked. But any USB drive I insert into either one of my USB ports does not work.

I recently reinstalled windows xp home, with a flash drive connected to my computer. After the installation was complete, and a couple days later I went to plug in my flashdrive, and no new drive appeared in my computer.

I went to disk management and assigned it a drive letter, and it opened, but after I unplug my flashdrive, the drive letter cannot be used again.

And, it makes my flashdrive into FAT filesystem, limiting the file name size.

I tried reformating to FAT32, but no avail..any help?

That is probably the case. I am far from any expert on this topic but I understand not all flash disks are ReadyBoost capable. In fact, I just bought a 16GB flash drive and on the pack, it clearly said it was not ready for this feature.

Hi, my laptop shows (in Properties) that there is sufficient space on my 16 GB flash drive (7GB), but when I try to transfer files, it says that the destination disk drive is full. I've defragmented etc, but to no avail. This has happened with my last two flash drives (Sony 8GB and San Cruz 16GB). Can you please help? The San Cruz is new and has only been filled / wiped a couple of times.

Many thanks, Stephen

Alright, I couldn't find exactly what to call this, or how to say this [the problem, i mean] so here goes:
I recently tried to format my 1 GB flashdrive. It worked fine up until i right clicked > Format.
When i tried to re add the files to the flashdrive, I realized that for some weird reason my computer believed this drive to have only 1 MB of space. So i tried to reformat again, only to realize that it was all my stupid doing. I realized that when the window opened after clicking 'Format' It gave me a pop up box for 1MB, and was a 'FAT' drive . I tried to switch this, but it only had 1 choice, unfortunately.

I've tried what i know, and unfortunately, i have no idea how to restore my flashdrive to it's original state of having 1GB data, or recognized as that by my computer. Help?

Thank you for your help, in advance.

EDIT: I am using a flash drive where as it USED To contain a security feature. It was by Memorex. During the process of Reformatting, i changed the maximum capacity of the drive so that nearly all of the memory was in the secured folder. Although something must've gone wrong... And i can't change it back since the software was removed!

FIX EDIT: I fixed it :/ Having gone to look via google for the software that was removed, typing different keywords in and all that stuff in order to find it. I finally found it, and fixed the flash memory!

Hi all
I have a Corsair flash that I have been using for years and now suddenly stopped working.
When I plug it in windows keeps telling the drive needs to be formatted which I don't want to as I have a lot of valuable data on it.
I tried Recuva software but that couldn't access the drive either.
Any help greatly appreciated.
