Unable to load antivirus; unable to start in safe mode

Q: Unable to load antivirus; unable to start in safe mode

I noticed my BitDefender was not running and sent an email to the company.  They sent me back a response that the licensing code was not valid (after two years) and they had disabled the software (without notifying me).  I downloaded AVAST and immediately started having lots of problems such as unable to shut down, screens freezing.  I unstalled, but the problems continued.  I did a system restore back to the installation of AVAST, but stil having problems  I purchased a new BitDefender, but it will not install.  I tried updating Windows Security Essentials, but it will not install.  I think something has hijacked my internet as it does not come on for a few minutes after I start the computer.  I am unable to start in safe mode to try to install that way.  Please help!

Preferred Solution: Unable to load antivirus; unable to start in safe mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Exactly...what AV programs are currently installed on this system?

Installing more than one is a known invitation to unpredictable system problems.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

I recently restored my computer to factory hoping I could fix the endless restarting. I'm unable to load my computer up normally. After my computer restarts several times in seemingly endless looping, I can proceed to safe mode with networking.

Issues:
I can't get my monitor to 1920x1080
Green lines running horizontal on anything with color
2 big green lines running vertical down my screen
Graphics card won't show up in device manager
Windows won't load correctly (blue screen)
Second monitor won't show up in device manager (projects main screen idk if this is just because of safe mode)
No audio or recording device installed

Specs:
Sapphire Radeon R9 270X OC with Boost Graphics Card
AMD Black Edition FX?6300 3.5 GHz 6?Core Processor
8gb ram (would have to pull out stick to find name then struggle to get back to safe mode)

Hi all - in desperate need of some help because I don't really know what I'm doing,

Family's desktop computer working absolutely fine last night (& I was the last person on it) however this morning when my brother turned on computer (& every time we have restarted it since) we are getting the "blue screen of death" with the BAD_POOL_CALLER message with stop code:

Stuck this info into google (& on microsoft support site which was no use at all) & I am now in possesion of a BAD_POOL_CALLER fix which I need to enter Safe mode to install, however when I try to enter Safe Mode I once again get a BAD_POOL_CALLER message with stop code:

Hi,

I am facing a major virus problem with my system. Task manager, registry edit and folder options of my operating system got disabled and also I am unable to boot in safe mode. If I press F8 and chose Safe Mode (with networking or any other option), pc is getting restarted again so again I had to start my pc normally.

I downloaded avira and avast and when I tried to install them, installations were being closed at the starting without any prompt messages. While googling, I came to see this forum I had downloaded hijackthis and here is my log.

Hello, First I will move this to the Am I Infected forum. Now let's see if we can do this by logging into a different user account ,not your regular one. I'm thinking we can do safe mode from there.Do you have SUPERAntispyware installed? Please follow our Removal Guide here Remove Antivirus Action (Uninstall Guide) [/url] .You will move to the Automated Removal InstructionsAfter you completed that, post your scan log here, let me know how things are.The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.

Hey guyz,

I am really in a great trouble. I wonder if some one could help me out with this issue.
My os details: Windows XP service pack 2.

My machine is unable to start normally. It always shows me the black screen with mouse pointer on it.
When I restart my machine it shows me the options to start my windows in:
Safe mode
Normal mode
last known good configuration

I am only able to start my windows If I select 'last known good configuration'. With the rest two I again go back to black screen.
I really cant continue my work like this any more.

Can any one give me a good solution for this?

A:Unable to start windows XP either in safe mode nor in normal mode

What is the brand and model of your computer, or motherboard, and what sort of Windows operating system disk you you have... OEM, Dell, Gateway, HP, or other recovery disk?
And how old is your system?
You either have a bad infestation, or a defective hard drive, video graphics, or memory module.
We can perhaps help more when we know what you have available.

I am using xp sp2. i have a trojan vundo in my system. symantec 10.1.6.6000 pro is detecting and deleting it every time i restart my system. they also have a tool to delete the trojan. but for that i need to start in safe mode. that is when i found out the problem. in safe mode the window will not come up, even after waiting considerable amount of time. so i restarted my system in vga mode and hopefully the window started this time. but the tool did not detect vundo. (i also have avg antispyware in my system)
now my problem how to get back the safe mode. and second i have seen a thread here about vundo.
1. is this trojan causing the safe mode problem or it is something else?
2.is there any way to get back safe mode without the trojan being cleaned first.
3. my system has become unexpectedly slow probably due to the trojan.
4.and just few min back there was a warning where my antivirus warned me that the auto protect has been turned off.

A:unable to start xp sp2 in safe mode (plz help me)

You said you tried the tool, was it vundofix? http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4954.html, you don't have to start in safemode to run it. Also, if you can boot normal, you might want to try SUPERanitspyware - http://www.superantispyware.com Also, before you do any of this, go to system properties and turn of System Restore, once clean, you can then turn it back on, if you are using it.

Computer was running fine, until recently where it will automatically restart once windows has loaded. My guess is that avast! (a virus program) is causing this, as it has happened to me once before on another computer.

avast! ran fine for a while, then the most recent update arrived and seemed to cause my computer to restart, so I had to uninstall avast! through safe mode.

However on this new computer, pressing, tapping, holding F8 during the boot sequence doesn't let me get to safe mode. I can either enter the BIOS, or a small screen with "select boot device" comes up, where my options are FDD, CD ROM or HDD to load first. Which doesn't help me at all.

All I would like to know is suggestions on how to get the computer to boot in safe mode.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey what's up, I'm new here...

I don't know how much time you have when your desktop is loading but, here's another way:

Start-Run-type msconfig-BOOT.INI tab-Check SAFEBOOT-select Minimal if it isn't already selected.

Just wanted to say, make sure you CPU fan is running. I had 2 cases last year where the CPU fan was clogged with dust, and the other wasn't even plugged in to the motherboard. If your CPU is overheating, your computer can restart while the desktop is loading or at other random points

Hi all, I was looking for information on why windows won't start in safe mode and happend on a post from this site (thread closed though). After reading it, I attempted to follow the instrutions givin about using recovery console. After entering "fixmbr" I recieved a caution message that this could potentually damage the partion and render all partitions inaccessable. "fixboot says it will rewrite a new boot sector. My question is should I continue with "fixmbr" and 'fixboot"? and will this reformat the HDD?
I'm trying despratly NOT to reformat and lose all my info on this HDD.

(long story as to how and why I'm at the point I am)

can anyone help???

A:Unable to start in safe mode

First, see Troubleshoot: Windows Won't Recognize Your USB Hard Drive

As to fixing your hard drive... when you say it won't boot into safe mode are you saying the computer fails to boot? or just where during the boot into safe mode process does it fail?

As fixmbr only makes sense if disk failing on bootup.

Fixmbr only rewrites the Master Boot Record. (Corrupt MBRs are often the reason a disk won't boot up). Rewriting the MBR doesn't overwrite your data. (but is still wise to back it all up first)

Hi,
I tried to start in all safe and normal modes. Recieved same response. Computer keeps recycling to start in safe mode but will not start. Windows come on for a second. I am recievinga a message that new software may have caused the problem and I had recently download a purchased disc for a webcam. I also downloaded same disc to my laptop with no problems. Windows vista is on the laptop.
Problem #2.
I had a problem with the laptop not recognizing my dvdrw drive. I had the drive replaced, it worked once and never again. What can I do?

A:unable to start in safe mode

Hi Chercher116,
Boot the sytem with "Last Know Good Configuration" and check.

If that doesn't work boot in command prompt and enter the command "chkdsk C: /f/r" (without quotes " ")

If the Check disk command work for you, than enter the command "sfc /scannow" (Without quotes " "). It might required the Windows XP installation CD.

This should fix. Regarding your DVD RW drive, Check your BIOS ROM to find whether its enable or disable. Also, check whether BIOS detects your DVD drive. If doesn't detects than remove it and check if any pin and other hardware things is damaged. If not, than reconnect while system is on.
Still your DVD drive is not working than call your laptop service provider request for a change of motherboard and DVD drive if its under warranty.

Hello!

I'm trying to help a friend clean up her laptop.  It is a Windows 7 64-bit laptop infected with Antivirus Security Pro, and it is preventing safe mode (i.e. it comes up to the welcome screen, and then automatically does a restart.

I attempted to use the farbar scanning tool per the instructions in another post, but when I enter the H:\frst64 command, it simply returns to the command prompt.  Nothing else happens.

The windows version shows as 6.1.7600 when I bring it up in recovery mode.

Would certainly appreciate any guidance on how to move forward.  I fear that her backups may be compromised as well...

I have an HP laptop, and here are the specs I know:

HP G72 Notebook PC
Intel Core i3 2.4 GHz processor
4 GB ram
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS

Recently I was streaming a TV show off of sidereel.com and firefox froze. I switched to Internet explorer and began to watch again, but the computer began to make a "dinging" noise occasionally. I then ran a norton anti-virus sweep which turned up only a few cookies.

After this, I watched lectures from my school's class that I had downloaded, and during this time, the computer froze and became unresponsive. I turned it off manually, and it has not been able to restart in normal mode since then. Every time I try to login, after I put in my password, it goes to a blue screen and says "System_Service_Exception" and then it restarts itself.

Occasionally it doesn't even make it to the windows login, and freezes at the "HP" screen in the beginning of startup.

Around the same time that this problem manifested itself, there may have been a new Windows 7 update that my computer was running in the background on its own.

I think the problem may be more related to the windows update than to other issues, but I have tried going to a system restore point (coincidentally, the only point available might be a restore point created by the windows update). I have no other restore points available, but I am able to access my computer in safe mode.

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

I have a Dell XP400 Desktop PC that I bought probably 5 years ago. I was having problems with my windows freezing and searched and thought I'd better defrag my HD. Tried that, but got a message that said to either do a CHKDSK or SCANDSK. After doing the CHKDSK, it was a read only and so after more searching I discovered I needed to use the command CHKDSK/F instead. I did this and it still didn't help because of some message about the volume.
Trying to start my XP Pro into Safe Mode by pressing F8 and even after continuing to press the button over and over, it didn't help and went to the Welcome screen. Then tried staring it again, but held the button in and it still went onto boot to the Welcome screen. I bought software yesterday called System Suite 11 since it had a defragger on it and it said to uninstall Spy Doctor. I don't have that and searched and still didn't find it. Any help would truly be appreciated.

Hi there,

I recently bought myself a lovely shiny new 19" widescreen TFT monitor and after plugging into my pc; I went about updating the drivers for my Nvidia GeForce 5600 graphics card to get the best screen resolution for said monitor.

Afterwards, my pc required a reboot which i did only to discover that Windows XP Home can no longer boot up. I can only assume it doesn't like the new drivers i installed for my graphics card. Unfortunately the boot up takes me to the Safe mode options screen and asks me to scroll up or down using the arrow keys to select "safe mode" "safe mode with networking" "last known safe config" and alas my keyboard no longer works...I cannot scroll up or down and windows will not reboot so i am stuck in an unending loop of despair and frustration.

I attempted to reboot windows from my CD but this too requires a "press any key to reboot windows XP from disc" which I cannot do.

I can however enter the "BIOS" menu and the keyboard will work here...but I am unsure how this helps me get back to windows and removing the offending drivers.

Thx in advance!

A:Unable To Start Windows Xp In Safe Mode...

I would say this maybe a issue with a USB keyboard or wireless keyboard. Try and find a wired keyboard and attaching that and restart in safe mode and roll back the graphics drivers.

I'm thankfully able to post this from my Mac as my PC has died...which I shall now explain...I'm running XP Professional with SP3 and was watching a video online from sidereel.com (in FireFox) when my security centre popped up an alert telling me my automatic updates were turned off.

I fired up my Ad-Aware to see what was what and my computer died. Upon rebooting, the security centre told me the firewall and auto updates were now turned off (despite the firewall being on in the actual security centre), my Command Anti-virus then popped up telling me I had an infection of which the file was listed as "TDSSNPUR.DLL" and from what I can remember of the other info it said "W32" "trojan.KA (I think)" - sorry this can't be more specific but I'll get to that in a jiffy. The alerts were popping up very quickly and with the same details.

I then attempted to re-boot in safe mode to run malwarebytes or to have a look and see if I could manually delete it but safe-mode just loaded up a blank screen and froze.

I then tried re-loading windows (after finding this forum) in the hope the alerts would pop up again and I'd be able to give you more details. Unfortunately, my toolbar on bootup seems completely useless and won't load at all - not even to shut down the computer.

Thanks in advance.

So I'm posting this for a friend of me, her laptop became really slow (10-15 min in loading screen, extremely slow reaction time when finally signed into Windows 8 etc.) But most of the time she couldn't even access Windows and an error came up: 'Critical process died'.
Or some weird errors when she finally managed to access Windows like:
'Framework\mscoreei.dll couldn't be loaded' or 'An write and read on the memory failed'

Basically I told her to try to Start in Safe mode and do a 'chkdsk' and/or ' SFC /scannow' as I thought her hard drive is badly corrupted or the laptop has been infected by a weird virus.
Unfortunately, the system is so slow and full of errors, she couldn't manage to start in safe mode because she can't get to the Settings, CMD or Run.

The next thing I did was trying to boot via a Recovery Drive (On a 8GB USB). But just as I thought, the boot order is on default 'Hard drive first'. You can change that easily by accessing the BIOS but ya... I can't help her to access the BIOS because she can't get into Settings->Troubleshoot->UEFI

Does anyone knows how to get into the BIOS or Safe mode without accessing Windows 8 itself to fix this huge Corruption/error/virus?
She has an ASUS notebook. Maybe some of you guys know a trick to press F2 or something when It's loading

Thanks!

- You do not need to change the boot order of drives in your computer's UEFI firmware (BIOS).

I am running Windows XP on a Compaq Presario.
The computer was on overnight but not online.
Suddenly, the following message appeared on a black screen:
"remove disk or other media. Press any key to restart"
No disks are running. Pressing Ctl/Alt/Del gives just briefly the red Compaq screen followed immediately by a black screen and the above message.
Turning off the power and restarting gives the same result but presing F8 repeatedly does not give the Safe Mode menu but the same message over and over.
Thus I am unable to run anything-not AVg, Hijack This, Spybot.
At a complete loss-please hlp

Hi all,

I have checked other threads for a solution to this problem, but I cannot seem to find one.

Ive got a Dell inspiron 1420 and it currently will not start up. After initializing, it gives me the screen that states that it detected an unusual shut down (which it did initiAlly, the screen froze so I powered it off manually). But now it won't get past this recovery screen. It freezes so that I cannot move to the option to start in safe mode nor will it do anything when I press f8 during start up. It freezes on this screen as well.

I have no idea if I am infected let alone how to check if I can't even get on my computer. I may have some sort of operating info on another forum that I could find.

Any suggestions?? I'm a student and need this computer!!

Thanks.

A:Computer freezes at start up; unable to get to safe mode

luckylindalu,
A re-format as suggested will wipe all your docs, photos etc & it therefore very drastic and is only a last resort so don't try it yet please!

I'm not sure of the solution but, in addition to the alternate boots you've already tried is there a "use last good configuration"? Or some kind of "repair" option? If so, try those in that order.

Hello All,
I am running Windows 7 RTM on a 1.75Ghz, 3Gb RAM box. Windows 7 was working fine for me, but this morning i just restarted because i thought it was acting slow. It had a proper shut down(I use verbose mode..)But then it never restarted. It just showed the HP logo and stopped.. I am even unable to get into the safe mode box(by pressing F8). I have a windows Xp bootable CD right now... and that doesnt boot either (Yes, I have ensured the booting order is correct.) What could be the cause?
Is it a hardware failure - As in harddisk crash? Because the computer just sits idle!! Strangely, I went to BIOS and did a disk diagnostic test which it passed.. But the harddisk LED didnt blink during the test(It should blink right?)... Please help me, i am really stuck here...

A:Windows 7 wont start.. unable to get to safe mode even!

Some kind of bios setting. Check to see the plug and play os is set to yes. If that's not the cause, use "standard optimized default" as the global bios setting and see how it carries on.

Can't hurt to actually update the bios from the motherboard manufacturer's website too.

Hi,

I need help in repairing my laptop, I believe it was recently infected by a Virus / Malware. Below is a summary of what I'm experiencing for reference.

Operating System: Windows XP SP3
Laptop Model: MSI-GX620 Series

*Unable to enter Safe Mode. It basically shows a blue screen but will quickly reboot afterwards (Registry Keys are already missing).
*Unable to finish HijackThis scan, it runs but it will stop once it reaches the hosts section. Checked my host file and its a whopping 4MB file. Basically it is not able to generate any log file for review.
*Cannot enable my Antivirus (Avira Free).
*Unable to run Malware Bytes.
*Multiple Running Process: ipconfig.exe

I'm on a different computer now, I can download files from here and I can just transfer the required files to my laptop if its needed.

Best,
Brian

Hello, So I was recently infected by some Trojans, not sure which ones. But when I rebooted my computer my taskbar was unable to load and only showed a sliver of it at the bottom of the screen. Also i'm unable to drag any desktop icons and my sound drivers are unable to load. I've tried running multiple anti-virus programs such as Malwarebytes and Kaspersky and unable to do so since I receive an error trying to run it. When I try to open Windows Firewall, I get a popup saying "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Serice?" But when I press yes I get an error saying ICS cannot be started. Can anyone help?

Tried to start in Safe Mode but it just by passes it and goes to my password input page and then starts normally but quickly locks down to Cheshire Police again.

This is so frustrating! I have tried rebooting and starting in safe mode, but either get a Windows Repair window with two choices: 1. Launch Windows Repair or 2. Start Windows normally - of which it won't let me choose and automatically goes into Windwows Repair mode. When I try to cancel, it says you are unable to cancel yet gives you the choice TO cancel. It seems like that is part of the virus as well.

Then I try to reboot again and f8 into safe mode, occasionally I will get a blue screen that says, "Please select boot device" and I am given two choices, both go back to my desktop and you can see the virus taking over (it blinks and changes my desktop colors a bit) then I can do nothing.

I have tried to go into msconfig but won't let me do that either. I have went as far as trying to purchase the stupid software with bogus info but no go. Anyother thoughts?

I am struggling with a client's Dell Dimension 5150 which has Media Center Edition installed.
Had signs of trouble about 10 days ago, so ran Malwarebytes and removed many items. Unistalled AVG due to the things that got by it and installed Microsoft Security Essetnials. Upgraded RAM to 3GB (was two x512mb, added two x1gb). Had a Canon printer dropping first few characters of emails, so downloaded new drivers and installed - did not fix that problem. Computer was running fine until yesterday, when client informed me he had a strange alert show up near System Tray. He ran Malwarebytes again, and it found some things which he elected to remove. Malwarebytes asked for restart, which he did, but computer hung. After a time, he powered it down. On next boot, he got BSOD & Stop error 50. I removed computer to attempt to resolve, and after imaging hard drive using Acronis True Image, I ran SpinRite 6.0 on the hard drive & it passed. I booted UBCD4Win to check the Malwarebytes logs to see what it had found. It listed RootKit.0Access Trojan:Win32. Using EZ-PCfix, I removed the identified file from startup list, and rebooted. Still STOP 50. I removed the two new pieces of RAM - same error. I put them back in and ran MemTest86 ver 4.0 - all tests pass. Using UBCD4win, I have run CHKDSK with no errors found. Currently I have restored the original image, then booted UBCD4win & used Registry Restore Wizard to restore system to June 4th, which is before any of the above eve... Read more

I just recently installed the Windows 8.1 update earlier today. Immediately after the required restart, my computer has not been working properly. As soon as I log on, the desktop flashes back and forth from the desktop picture to the color of the menu background. It flashes back and forth pretty quickly and while this is happeneing I can't perform any functions. When I try clicking on the internet or anything else it is nonresponsive. I tried doing a system restore but after my computer restarted it said the restore was unsuccessful. I tried it again, as well as trying it from a different restore point but neither would work. I then attempted to restart my computer in safe mode but immediately got a pop up saying: "The instruction at 0x35f7649c referenced memory at 0x35f7649c. The memory could not be rewritten. Click OK to terminate the program." After clicking OK, the popup immediately came back and neither clicking OK or pressing the X in the upper right would make it go away and it would just immediatley pop back up and I could not click on anything else while it was up. Also while in safe mode, my desktop shortcuts and desktop picture were again flashing. I'm concerned I have a virus but not exactly sure how I got it or how to fix it. I have Webroot installed and it alerted me to a potential virus a couple days ago but when I tried to fix it, it said something about my product key expiring it and since it wasn't causing my any problems I ignored it. To enter safe mode you will want to reboot the computer, wait until your motherboard info loads (IE drives, memory etc...) and then begin gently tapping F8 until you get the screen for safe mode. Select safe mode with networking.

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

Hi there, I'm trying to fix my Aunt's windows XP computer. I downloaded MBAM as she had previously mentioned getting a call on the phone from someone in India telling her she needed to pay $160 for her antivirus or her computer would shut down.

I ran MBAM and it took about 8 hours to scan, and at the very end found a bunch of results. I told it to get rid of them, and then restarted. Upon restarting, it also ran a disk check, and after that finished, it booted up but took forever to load. Upon loading the taskbar showed up for a brief moment, then disappeared, and I can't seem to get it to run from the task manager either. It brings up the explorer.exe process briefly, then without ever loading the taskbar, it ends the process.

I got a bit worried at this point and tried to restart in safe mode. However, when I do that, it loads a bunch of drivers and then stops. It never finishes loading. (this happens in safe mode with and without networking)

I also tried restarting back into normal mode and running avast through command prompts, but it doesn't do anything and I also got errors stating that a particular file is missing.

What should I do next? I was going to attempt running combofix from my flash drive, but when I try to CD into the drive, it says the drive isn't ready. If you have any suggestions on what to do, let me know, thanks.
