Internet Explorer Icon Broken

Q: Internet Explorer Icon Broken

Instead of the usual IE icon, I have a generic icon that's used when the file type is unknown. I use Firefox anyway, but I do have one link on my desktop to check my e-mail that's meant to be used with IE.

Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer Icon Broken

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Internet Explorer Icon Broken

Try refreshing the icon cache.

Also - does it still load IE when you double click on it?

If I start my IE, he just pops up for a milisec and then closes again...

I tried to "remove" him via 'add/remove windows features' (whats it called?) and then add him again, but the problem stays.

A:Internet Explorer is broken

You could try the following fixes from Microsoft
Fix Internet Explorer add-on problems when IE hangs or freezes
Playing video files crashes or freezes Internet Explorer or Windows
Improve performance, safety and security in Internet Explorer

If none of that would work you can try to spot errors with Event Viewer.

Open the Start Menu, and type eventvwr.msc in the search box and press enter.
If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes (Windows 7) or Continue (Vista).
In the left pane of Event Viewer, double click on Windows Logs to expand it, then right click on System and check for errors (see screenshot). If no errors related to IE will be in System, please check Application section.

Please post description of errors occurred within the described time.

I have Win XP Media Center edition, with IE8. Recently, IE stopped working properly. I cannot access the MS Update page - I get

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. etc. etc.

Also, bizarrely, I can't access my Web-based email, such as Hotmail and Yahoo, or some sites such as PayPal and Clickbank. Other sites display OK. Everything works OK when I use my Firefox browser, but of course I can't go to MS Update page with Firefox.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Many thanks,

I have heard from more than one expert that IE is considered a broken browser and that Microsoft is no longer making updates available for this browser - I believe version 11 was the last one and that come out a long, long time ago. Now that Windows 10 has come out and it uses the Edge browser, Microsoft is doing nothing with the old IE browser. They have suggested (the experts I've talked to) to start using the Google Chrome browser instead of IE. Google Chrome is listed now as the number 1 browser in use today.

Any thoughts on this?

A:Internet Explorer - a broken browser?

Internet Explorer 11 is the ONLY browser that I use in Windows 7 and in Windows 10.
It's updated almost every month when the cumulative security update is released, and is current at version 11.0.47

Hi, recently, I've returned home from a trip and found that my laptop has been very slow. Also in addition to that, my firefox + internet explorer both do not work anymore. While I was away, I believe my family has been using it quite frequently. Because of this, I actualy have little idea to what the actual problem could be (downloads maybe? But I'm not sure). Anyways it'd be great if someone could help me figure out why my laptop has been running so slowly recently, and also why my Firefox/IE doesn't work anymore. Thanks

I have attached my Hijack This Log, As well as my DDS Log. I have a GMER Log as well, but I think posting it would be overkill. However if I do need to post it, I'd be glad to do so.

My IE history function stopped working quite a while ago when I was using
version 5.1. It has stayed broken through upgrades to IE 6.0 and to 6.0 SP1.
When I select the "history" icon I get a list starting with History and containing only the file "index.dat". The only other item in the history list is
"desktop.ini". I have scanned the registry and it is OK. Is there any way to fix this without reinstalling IE?

select IE 6 - click add/remove- select Repair IE.

Hi there,

Here's the history of my problem. My processor is an AMD AthlonXP 1900+. I was running XP Home, SP3, and IE8. The system was running progressively slower. The slowness seemed to start when I tried out some software that required SQL server. It also seemed to be bogging down as more and more windows updates continued to become necessary.

Then a few days ago, I started getting a lot of random pop up internet windows, and I suspected a possible virus. I decided to reboot in safe mode, and then run a scan, but when I tried rebooting, my computer fell into the "endless reboot" cycle. None of the F8 choices for how to boot would make any difference, the thing would just keep starting over without booting Windows.

So I put in my original XP disc, what was call XP version 2000, and did a repair installation. It completed successfully, but apparently, even though it "rolled back" XP to the original version, it didn't roll back IE8 to the original IE6. Consequently, I can't start internet explorer, because I get an error message saying that the procedure entry point SetDllDirectoryW was not found in KERNEL32.dll.

My computer is connected to the internet, because my LogMeIn loads automatically, and a couple of my Poker sites will connect (they don't use IE browser), but I can't open a browser, so I can't install SP2 (or SP3). I also can't run Windows Live Messenger, getting similar errors, but I'm assuming that once I'm able to downloa... Read more

I'm not sure where to post this (here or Vista). I had the msa.exe trojan with the Internet Explorer fake website pop-ups (which AVG blocked and identified as TrojanHorse BHO.JQI.dropper from avrapiddown.info) which I cleaned with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. I'm pretty sure I cleaned the comp up but I still cannot see my desktop folders, files or icons. I can add a folder and it shows up in the Desktop folder under my user but I can't see it or manipulate on my desktop. I still have my wallpaper showing and the taskbar and start menu and everything functions just no desktop. Does anyone have a clue how to fix this.

THat is why they call it a BETA test and tell folks not to install it on their primary machines. I keep a "testbed" machine I do not mind messing up and reinstalling everything on for beta material.

Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview and return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP
# Click ?Start,? and then click ?Control Panel.?
# Click ?Add or Remove Programs.?
# Check ?Show Updates? at the top of the dialog box.
# Scroll down the list to ?Windows XP ? Software Updates,? select ?Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2Preview,? and then click "Change/Remove."
# If you are running Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview -- March 20 or later, it is no longer necessary to check "Show Updates."

If "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview" does not exist, run
%windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.exe .
You need to have "view hidden folders" enabled.

That should be spuninst.exe. not spuninst.e xe.
Not sure why it is doing that.

try clicking on the actual file, iexplore.exe - first delete icon you're clicking on
navigate to c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe and click on the file
if this works for you and IE opens, then go to c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
and right click on iexplore.exe and choose "Send to.." and select Desktop (create shortcut)
this will create a new IE shortvut on desktop that should work for you
if clicking on the iexplore.exe does not work, you would have to re-install interent explorer to see if that would resolve issue

My computer at work has been recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP. Funny thing is that the Internet Explorer icon (not a shortcut) doesn't show on the desktop. When I right click on the desktop to open the display properties and select the IE icon to be displayed, it still doesn't show on screen. I can only find shortcuts. They're not what I need because when you right click on a shortcut, the IE properties don't show (so you can't delete history or cookies). If I want the properties, I have to open IE.

Can you tell me how to get the real IE icon on the desktop?

By default, the Show Desktop Icons feature is turned on for clean installations of Windows XP, but the Recycle Bin is the only icon that is put on the desktop. If you upgrade a previous version of Windows to Windows XP, all user icons remain on the desktop. By default, the My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents icons are no longer put on the desktop for clean installations or upgrades. To add the My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents icons back to your desktop: 1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
2. On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
3. Under Desktop icons, click to select the check boxes of the icons you want to view.
4. Click OK two times.

Hi guys,

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum to be posting thread or if this question has been answered already (in which case I wouldn't mind a link or two) AND for the length of the query.

I have a bit of a funny problem. First, I pinned the internet explorer to the start menu from its location in "all programs". Having done that I deleted the shortcut (if it is that I wonder now) from the "all programs" list. I'm just weird that way. Now I do not know whether this was a direct consequence of the deletion but after a little while i noticed the internet explorer icon of the pinned shortcut had reverted to its generic version. I tried changing the icon by going into properties but that didn't work.

Strangely enough, when I looked at the original app in the program folder it had also reverted to a generic icon. So I decided to go disable the IE service from programs and features, restart my pc for it to take effect, turn it on and restart again. The icon was back in the "all programs" list but was still generic but its target in the IE folder was back to normal. I tried pinning the shortcut to no avail. So I tried pinning the original app itself. The entire list of pinned programs disappeared! And when I removed IE from the list it came back.

[ Okay then. In an effort to eliminate a possibility for the disappearing programs in the start menu, I unpinned a random app. The entire list disappeared again. If try to change ... Read more

Hello Kalaris, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you pinned the IE shortcut from All Programs, then the pinned items would no longer work or display properly when the target source IE shortcut from All Programs was deleted.

You will need to unpin it from the Start Menu, create a new IE shortcut directly from the IE iexplore.exe file, place that shortcut where you want to have it at, then pin that shorcut to the Start Menu.

Hope this helps,

Now say you minimize that one and open yet a new IE page, you should now have to IE explorer icons there. In my case that dosen't happen.. I can open the first one and minimize it, but when I open the second one it takes over the place of the first. This only happens under my account, all others are fine. I am including a screenshot so you can see exactly what I'm talking about. I have tried searching for a solution on Google, but haven't been able to find anyone who has had this same problem before. Does anyone know why this is happening, or how to fix it?

IE 7 does not have a icon or custom icon. That was last seen in version 6.

Hello. I have a question to ask you.

I am having issues with my Internet Explorer 9 in Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. What is happening is this:

Yesterday, I accidently deleted in my Windows 7 taskbar the IE icon to the right of the Start button icon. Okay, then I replaced it from the start menu and positioned it as the first icon right of the Start button icon in the taskbar. Okay, I thought all was fixed. However, this is what is now happening. Say, I click on a link in my e-mail from within my e-mail client (Windows Live Mail 2012) ; then if I already have at least a window open of IE (say in the background), then another tab will open for that e-mail weblink next to IE's existing tab -- that is normal. However, if I do NOT HAVE ANY tabs open AT ALL for IE to begin with, and I click on the same link in my e-mail from within my e-mail client, I get a whole new IE window to open and it shows the IE icon in my Windows 7 taskbar at the far right (the next available open space for an icon of a program to show in the taskbar).

I do not want this to happen and it did not happen before I accidently deleted the IE icon to the right of the Start button icon yesterday. I want any and all windows that open for IE to be all associated with that one IE icon to the right of the Start button like before. What it should be doing normally is stacking IE icons (up to three) all under the first icon right of the Start button.

Please tell me what you think or know is going on here a... Read more

A:I Need To Have ALL Weblinks Open IN ONE Internet Explorer Icon???

Sounds to me like you used a different Internet explorer listing,
64 bit would have two lists,
I'm pretty sure live mail would use the 32 bit version not the 64 bit version.
If you deleted something it would be in your recycle bin= have you looked and restored it ?

After getting the computer back from service where a new Hard drive was put in, whenever I hit IE icons (desktop or taskbar) I am taken to a MSN set up wizard.

Using MSN messenger, when I click get hotmail mail I am again taken to a MSN internet service set up wizard.

I believe my paths are screwed up. I am using Windows 98 second edition and AOL. Can anyone help me reconfigure so I can get IE to fire up correctly?

I am running XP SP2. I am having a problem getting Internet Explorer to open. Under Network Connections, the LAN icon is gone. There are actually no icons in Netword Connections. I'm not sure what is usually all supposed to be in there. When I run troubleshooting, the computer says that my network should be set up and running fine though.

I cannot get Internet Explorer to open up either. When I double-click to open it, the window will briefly flash like it wants to open up, and then disappears. It doesn't show up in Task Manager processes or anything after this either. This happens with several other programs as well, such as my Intel Network Adapter program among others.

If anyone can please help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, Stu

the IE icon that's normally on my desktop is gone.

the "icon" and words are there, but its a default windows icon becuz it cant find the right one.

awhile ago i installed sumthing called style xp that gives all these cool themes to xp....once i deleted the program, and one of the themes, the icon was gone.

in my start menu, the regular icon is present. justnot on the desktop.

i believe this problem is related to the themes thing becuz when i copy/create a shortcut to the ie icon on the desktop, the shortcut uses the same default (wrong) icon. when i riteclik on the shortcut + go 2 properties, and try to change icon, a msg instantly pops up and sez "windows cant find 'the path to "internet explorer.ico" that lies in an old deleted theme folder .

thanks for reading.....please help me, the computer is not mine

I went though a process about two weeks ago where one of the BC experts helped restore my computer and ultimately eliminate a search engine redirect problem. The support was outstanding.

Today I noticed a new problem when I am using IE 8. I will get messages telling me the webpage has been restored but I am not able to get it back. When I close IE 8 I see Notepad Icons on my desktop with labels such as "hs_err_pid2712" The content says something about an Exception Stack Overflow.

Any ideas?

I have to click again and again (at least 9/10 times) at the Internet Explorer icon on my desktop before finally it opens. It's so annoying- What could be wrong? Same thing happens with the Mozilla Firefox icon! Is it a virus/malware problem?

New user of Windows 7 here. I have the Internet Explorer icon pinned to my taskbar. However, when I click on the IE icon, it changes from an icon to a bar representing the IE window that has opened. I'm wanting to keep the single icon on the taskbar, even when IE is open, like you were able to in XP. Any suggestions?
