Finding All files with 0 Bytes Size on Disk

Q: Finding All files with 0 Bytes Size on Disk

I've recently tried out Windows 2012 Data Deduplication and due to an error I could not retrieve all my files.
I'm trying to find all of the files on the disk that say they have a file size but when you look under "Size on disk" it says it takes up 0 Bytes.

I've tried sorting the files by Size and by Space used. I've searched using Windows Explorer with size:empty but am coming up with nothing.

Thanks for your help.

P.S. I took a look into Sparse file utility but it turns out these files aren't sparse files.

EDIT: I've also tried chkdsk but it reports that there are no errors on the drive.

Preferred Solution: Finding All files with 0 Bytes Size on Disk

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How is possible to appear such a local disk and how to get read of this.

SORRY for opening the topic, I reserved a partition on the HD for Linux, I already installed Linux and probably this is why the partition become visible in Windows laike a local disk.
The topic can be closed, sorry for opening it.
Thanks for understanding.

Hi,

I'm experiencing the same problem as this post and am fervently hoping that someone will have a solution this time around.

I was using itunes when an mp3 I like wouldn't play at all. It was still sitting in the playlist, but itunes refused to play it, despite having played it in the past (last time it was played was 3rd September 2011).

I tried to open the song in Windows Media Player, that wouldn't play it either. Checking the file's properties, it says it's size is 0bytes, and size on disk is 4.00KB. Another symptom of this is that the ID3 tag has disappeared.

Using MP3 tag, it turns out that the same problem has happened to lots of my music files. It seems to be at random: the mp3 files are all saved in different folders (although all are on the C drive), it has happened to both downloaded files and those ripped from CDs, and there are some MP4 files with the same problem. It's also happened to some files purchased directly from itunes.

If anyone can offer a reason or a solution to this, please let me know. I'm happy to provide more information if it will help!

*Edit* Sorry, I just realised that this may have been more relevant in the Multimedia forum (I'd just followed the 'Please start your own thread' link in the thread mentioned earlier).

I can't find a post that is exactly on point, but forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere. I keep all my audio files and some video files on a dedicated internal hard drive - downloads, CD rips, etc. Today I discovered that the vast majority of MP3s and a good few of my AVI/MPEGs are registering as 0 bytes. Also, the folders show a similarly drastically reduced size. This is not the end of the world, since I have been regularly backing up with Acronis True Image, and have found an image from three months back where the files are the correct size (phew - I wouldn't want to start replacing over 10,000 songs!). But I also found another weird thing. I mounted the "good" Acronis image as T drive (read/write), and it reported a capacity of 186GB, which is right. The bad internal drive - drive E - reports a capacity of 122GB, 60GB smaller, which must be related to the "empty" MP3s. But I can't see why the shrinking of the files should APPEAR to result in a shrinking of the drive (since that's impossible!).

1. I would like if possible to revert E drive to its previous state, since I will otherwise have lost three months of MP3s. If that's not possible:

2. I would like to know what caused this failure, so that I can avoid it in future.

Can anyone help, or point me in the right direction? Thank you.

A:MP3 files have become 0 bytes in size

Sorry - it's not "the vast majority" of my MP3s on E drive that have become 0 bytes. So far as I can tell, it's all of them, except five CDs I ripped today.

hey Guys,

I had a very healthy version of XP media center formatted with NTFS FS. I had my D drive as the OS drive and my C drive was my storage drive...dont ask how it got there but it was a series of me playing around with Disk mirroring and drive swapping.

Anyway when I upgraded to windows 7, it now parked my D drive as my C drive and my C drive is now my D drive...no problem there however windows sees the drive as being 0 bytes in size and 0 bytes used. In my BIOS everything is still fine however Windows cant see my 500GB drive. I also noticed I have the option to set the partition active where I the other drive has this option greyed out. Should I set this partition to be active? Will this erase any data on my drive?

THanks

SG

A:Disk has 0 bytes used and 0 bytes free

I helped someone else out in the exact problem as you.

I'll give you the information. You're definitely welcome to ask questions, but I suppose it's up to you to decide what you want to do.

In his situation, he could boot to another operating system (XP and Vista) to access the drive but under 7, it had 0 bytes.

So I had him copy everything he needs off the drive in the other OS. Then I told him to low level format the drive. After doing that, the drive was read well inside Windows 7.

My best advice to you is to backup the hard drive by any means possible to another storage medium. Even if that means taking the drive out of your computer and placing it in another one running XP or Vista.

Then perform a low level format on it once you are satisfied your data is secure on the backup medium.

Hi guys,

having followed your excellend advice previously I now run Malware Bytes regularly and SuperAnti Spyware as well. I also have Zone Alarm installed as my firewall and occasionally run spybot to complement.
Saying all that, apart for some tracking cookies and my little one accidently agreeing to download something that turned out to be infected things have been fine.

For the past 2 days though, Malware bytes keeps reporting blocking an 'outgoing' attempt to connect to a malicious website via a report. It is logging this and I have scanned in both safe mode and normal mode with both this and antispyware and no significant finds so i'm at a loss as to where its coming from

Any suggestions as to what it might be? I've attached the last scan logs and your Mini toolbar results.

Hi All,
Been doing a lot of searches for this issue over the last few days and can find a solution to fix it(re create wmp database) but no mention of why this occurs

The main reason I want to use WMP is because it has playcounts, so after I have copied some media files I can see what hasn't been watched/listened too (going through my dvd collection and converting to digital)

a lot of files are on my old machine (Mac) so I copy them over and correct the metadata to make sure it's correct, few hours later I look at wmp shows the file size as 0 bytes (actual file is correct in explorer)

Is there anything I can do to avoid this (rebuilding library loses playcounts so don't want to keep doing this)?
or should I totally ignore playcounts and use the new metro style video app?

This seem like an issue that has been going on for years, but cannot find anything about a way to avoid it happening

A:WMP shows file size as 0 bytes

Hello paulsalter,

As you are aware, this does happen often; especially if you have a large number of files to be indexed. Why? Who knows? But I have a rep waiting for anyone that can provide a definite fix. You are not alone on this one.
Good luck with whatever decision you may make.

On an external drive I have a folder of WindowsImageBackup which I wanted to delete as it seems too small so perhaps no good.

Looking at its Properties it has, Size: 24 bytes; Size on disk: 1,50KB, Contains 3 files, 6 folders.

Trying to delete this I get the message that 'This folder is too large for the recycle bin'. Can this be right?

Apparently I can 'permanently' delete it though.

A:Folder size 24 bytes/1.5KB too big for recycle bin?

You can routinely get that message re Recycle Bin size...depending on the current contents in RB and file size.

I get such all the time when I delete any number of video files at the same time...I keep my RB size very low and sometimes just remove it from the equation by having all files deleted completely without bothering with a RB.

Since you always have the option to delete anyway...I would waste any brain cells on that situation.

The size of the RB is completely up to each user.  If you are the type that deletes, then changes your mind...you probably ought to use RB and consider the size based on the frequency you empty the contents.

Hi,

I had some issues to begin with and followed a guide on here to remove that issue but now I am receiving these constant pop-ups in the lower right hand corner of my screen saying that Malware Bytes is finding different malicious content and also Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is finding potentially harmful material on my computer. The issue first started when I had the Cloud AV 2012 and I followed the guide to get rid of that. However, now I am receiving these pop-ups and when I scan with Malware Bytes it finds the same things over and over but never seems to get rid of the issue. Now when I can scan with MSE it finds a few things and deletes them and when I restart my computer it forces me to go through a windows repair process before I start Windows to restore and recover things lost in the removal process. I also ran the GMER log and it didn't find anything. I couldn't select some things on the right hand side because they were "greyed out" but I did have services, registry, files, c:/, and ADS selected. I hope this helps explain the issue that I am having and you can help.

So I rebooted my computer.
The boot process is perfectly fine. I can log in, but I only see a black screen with a cursor.
I'm running applications via task manger. I tried to run explorer.exe, but its file size is 0 bytes, so it's empty or something (and thus not a valid Win32 application). I tried doing a system restore, which did not restore explorer.exe.

I've also tried chkdsk and sfc /scannow, but chkdsk does not find any errors and sfc scans and then closes without any notifications or errors.

Some programs that I've recently installed were: Dropbox, QT Lite (quicktime codec), and AVG.

Any idea why? This is with a Lenovo T440s with Win7.

Hi adya,

Vista does not use any dos boot files, you will need to find xp ones for this purpose...I also doubt you can properly update your bios using a USB drive as this is highly unsupported and untested, It would be better to use a floppy disk but you should have access to a windows based bios flash program, check your motherboard manufacturer website as they usually have one available

Hello there, and thank you for viewing my thread!

After formatting my PC, I have made a fresh back up of all of my data onto my external hard drive (as you do). The problem I have, is that the external hard drive is showing as pretty much full, but there's nowhere near that much data on it!

I did a little bit of digging, and noticed that when I right click a folder on the external hard drive and go to 'Properties' that the size of the file shows as one value and the size on disk value is significantly larger in most cases.

In some cases, both values do not reflect the actual size of the file on my desktop.

The ExHD is in ExFat format, and I'm assuming it's something to do with the way it's formatted, I just don't know how to fix it. I've tried it a couple of different ways, with different 'Allocation Unit Size's, but for how long it takes to complete the back-up's each time I'd rather just ask for help and find out where I'm going wrong.

If anyone could help me sort this out I'd really appreciate it.

I edit a lot of home movies of my daughter, some video files are as large as 10GB so I cannot use the 4GB file size maximum given by NTFS.

Thank you so much!

My 32GB Windows 10 Home PC (recently upgraded from 8.1) is low on disk space. I deleted Windows.old and I have hibernation disabled. Apart from a few browsers, very little else is installed, yet I only have 11.7GB left?

One reason may be the size of the Windows folder:
Size 14.7GB
Size on Disk 9.91GB

From my calculations, Windows appears to be using the higher figure in determining available disk space.

Why is 'Size' so much greater than 'Size on Disk', can I do anything about it? I have a similar 8.1 machine, it does not have this disparity (12.4GB and 12.3GB).

What would be a normal 'Size' for a Windows folder on Windows 10 Home PC very recently upgraded from 8.1 i.e. with few, if any Windows live updates run ?

A:Windows Folder Size greater than Size on Disk

I imagine its because windows compresses some system files currently it may be using 9gb but with all files uncompressed you may be looking at 14 which is why it uses the higher value

Windows 10 will save disk space and no longer require a recovery partition | Windows 10 content from SuperSite for Windows

Hello,
I`d like to hear your oppinion about win 7 and some problems I run into.

Few month ago I bought laptop with genuine win 7 installed. I can say it was big system improvement. i5 processor and 4g ram played well with 7.

However that didn`t last long. After a month my win crashed. I susspect that was cause I installed Office 2010 beta, which sometimes in that period made my computer very slow.

Now, I`m not that sure. Why? Well, after system reinstalation I didn`t install Office 2010 any more and my system worked great for month or two. Untill yesterday... It crached again, and this time, after reinstalation It wasn`t well. I couldn`t see some disk partition (D: 0 bytes) and new instalation was performing very very slow.
*Note, I made my partitions using some windows tool, after my first reinstalation, not before it.

I did small research about that, and found that few people already had the same problems. They have suggested I install some other system that will recognize my other partition for backup, since win 7 haven`t upon instalation.

I didn`t do that exectly, Since I`ve had backup, I`ve just formated all my partitions, deleted it and created new partitions by using tool within system installation, and for now it works fine.

So, what do you think what could cause this, just some system bug, virus, or whatever?

*Note, I did catch some virus in period before, but Nod32 had found and deleted it.

A:I couldn`t see some disk partition (D: 0 bytes)

Furthermore, till 2-3 days ago FRST was running absolutely fine but today when I ran it, it gave me an error "Variable Used Without Being Declared" on some line number which I do not remember. The error came up as soon as FRST started scanning the system.

You would notice that there is now space on the C: drive but that was after I uninstalled a game which freed up around 10GB.

That is why I downloaded OTL and have attached a log file of that. DDS does not run on Windows 8.1 and hence OTL.

I hope someone is able to guide me here.

Hi
Thank you for taking the time to read my query.
I just restored a bkf file and the restored folder is smaller than the original bkf file. I need to delete the bkf file which is 12 GB but don't want to until I am sure all the files were restored.
I would like to figure out which files were not restored.
Is there any way to figure out which files are missing. After I restored the files, the report says that hardlinks could not be transferred but does not the size of them. The bkf file size is 33,754,314 bytes larger than the restored file, but the bkf file "size on disk"is 19, 099,648 bytes smaller than the restored folder!!!
When I left click on the bkf file and select properties it does not tell me how many files are in the bkf file only the bytes.

Is there any freeware/program that will tell me the number of files in the bkf properties dialogue box? Or even better let me look at the size and number of files in the three main folders I backed up.? I can not access/explore the bkf file only restore it. That would solve my problem. My backup tree is C:sharedhardlinkdata>beth>documents and settings>beth> and then 3 folders underneath
Thank you

I downloaded a file, didn't download correctly, size = 0 bytes.

Reports owner unknown. I can't change ownership, remove file properties, any of that stuff. Can't rename or delete. I'm logged in as administrator but it keeps asking for administrator permission.

??

Another question about file ownerships - I tried to do a backup once, during an OS re-install, many files came back garbled, with file names switched around, many picture files had a file size but would not open, even if I changed the extensions, etc.

It seems easier to just copy files to an external, then copy back, than doing the windows backup. Is this what other's have found?

Dear BC

I was infected, sometime ago, with "adservice scanner", "yazzle sudoku", "spy falcon" and other very

difficult pests.

After I clean my PC, noticed a few days after and by luck, that I have 6 files in 3 different folders

with 0 bytes that I can't erase.

Those files don't have the type (are only just like CAMLJ9WC.) and the only thing that I can do whit is

to modifie the program to open them. I can't move, delete, copy and open and even delete any folder that

contained one of them.

A funny thing that happens when I change in one of them the program to open it, the program is changed,

also in all the other files at the same time.

What can I do to delete them? It is possible or not?

Thank you for an expected answer from anybody and my best regards.

Darthy

A:Zero Bytes Files That I Can't Delete

You can try Unlocker - available for free download here: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/This program helps delete locked files with error messages like:-Cannot delete file: Access is denied-There has been a sharing violation.-The source or destination file may be in use.-The file is in use by another program or user.-Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.1. After install, right click the folder or file and select Unlocker from the menu.2. If the folder or file is locked, a window listing of lockers will appear.3. Click "Unlock All" and you are done.Another tool you can try is Delete Doctor available from here:http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4473

Hello ,

I'd love some advice how to get rid of these "empty" files. Have tried  Fileassassin etc but it won't budge.
Done some research and it seems deleting with DOS should work but i'm not entirely sure of the correct way
of doing it.
All my scans come up clean, and from what i read these files seem harmless , but i'd prefer to be rid of them anyway.

Thanks in advance

A:Can't delete "0 bytes" files

Had this a couple of times, probably Windows making a permision issue .
Usually if you boot into safe mode you can then delete these kind of locked files,
even if you cant move them any other way.
Hope that helps.

When I right click a file to view it's properties there are two different values shown: one for file "size" and the other for "size on disk". The second value is always larger. Could someone please explain what the difference is because I'm in the process of allocating space for backed up user data on a network share and I need to multiply the average file size by the number of users to get an estimate of how much space to allocate to that share. Thanks in advance!

A:file size vs size on disk

Disks are laid out at a base level in sectors, and then in clusters which are groups of sectors.
For example, on a 32GB partition (Fat32) the cluster size is 32000 bytes. On a NTFS system, the standard size is 4K.

Files can only be on a cluster boundary. Therefore, in this example, a file that is 16,000 bytes (file size) will be 32,768 bytes (on disk). And a 40,000 byte file (file size) will be 65,536 bytes (on disk).
Or, on a NTFS system, a 5,000 byte file will take 2 clusters, or 8,192 bytes (on disk)

Do Start > Run > Command and at the prompt enter
CHKDSK

After it runs, the "xxxx bytes in each allocation unit" is the cluster size.

They are being corrupted. Could be a failing HDD, faulty motherboard controller, RAM, power supply, etc. or the result of some other software running.

For example, if I try and download a 10mb file, I can see the progress bar for that file work its way to 100%, but then when I hover the icon over the downloaded file, it shows as 0 bytes, and if i try and execute the file, I get the following message

I have tried downloading video files, music files, as well as executable files but this always happens.

So I'm looking for a way to rank files by size regardless of their folder location, largest-to-smallest, ideally without a full scan of the disk if there are internal indexes that have this info.
Thanks

P.S. Sometimes Windows seems confused. Microsoft Money Sunset edition is taking up 23TB, for example.

Hi all,

A whole series of files of mine are suddenly shown as 0 bytes.

They all seem to be in the same folder + subfolders, and be quite large, around the 1GB mark, or larger.
Any idea how I can recuperate them, or what this is?
I've ran chkdsk /f /r, but without any luck.

I've checked for the hard disk health, and it passes all non mega-thorough tests.

I've ran Malware Bytes and Avast, both of which didn't show any infections.

I've booted up from an Ubuntu Live USB, and the files also appear as 0 bytes there.

Maybe I should add I very recently switched to Windows 10, and these files are in my data hard disk, which is separate from the Operating System one.
Many thanks in advance

My current total sent bytes almost doubles my total received bytes. If I don't reset my router, this will continue at an exponential rate. After a few hours my sent bytes will be almost 4 to 5 times more than my received and continue to climb.
I've tried to troubleshoot where all this sent information is coming from by running numerous virus/malware/rootkit scanners, of all different brands. AVG, Avast, SnD, Adaware, etc., netstat, all with zero unusual results.
I even unplugged all data cables from my router, reset the router, and then connected to it with my phone, which made things more confusing. After resetting and connecting with my phone, the router then began to use my phone to send a large amount of bytes.
What could be causing this? Could the router itself be piggybacking whatever is connected to it to send out information? If so, what could it possibly be sending in that manner?

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.

Hi guys,
So recently my computer went nuts.  The title pretty much says it all, but it expand a bit.  Basically IE and Word both crash and Chrome will open, but when I try to download something it just stays in the "starting..." state and the download never begins.  I also tried to install HijackThis to get those logs and it will not install.  It keep saying it "must be installed on a local hard drive"  when the destination is a local hard drive.  Also I tried to run some anti-malware, MalwareBytes will install but won't open, Spybot installed but says "The application was unable to install correctly (0xc0000005)"  Below is the dds.txt and attached is the attach.txt.  Thank you in advance for any help.
