puzzling thing under show hidden devices

Q: puzzling thing under show hidden devices

As some may know I've been browsing the forum and sometimes helping people or just adding my two sense. Now, after reading various threads where it was suggested to look under hidden devices for troubleshooting I decided to see if there was anything disabled in my hidden devices. Much to my surprise, (this is a relatively new install of XP Pro) there was one! below you will find the snap for its properties.
Is this important?
What does it do?
Should I hunt down drivers for it or what?

If you need more info snaps let me know.

I'll be in town for about an hour so dont expect a sudden reply, but I will reply :P

Edit, changed it to jpg

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi folks,

I am attaching a screenshot of entries in Device Manager 'Show Hidden Devices' that have yellow exclamation marks on them.
Their properties say "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)"

I recently uninstalled my Iomega 100 zip drive as I haven't used it for years and I'm wondering if these are left-overs from that. I can't think of anything else I've done to cause them. Can anyone help please?

I have a Toshiba laptop, model L505-ES5018. I had Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed on here, but decided to reformat my hard drive using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. After the reformat was finished, I ran Windows Update and it found several items to download and install for me. I noticed that it also found optional items to download and install for me, so after all the important updates installed, I ran the optional updates. After all of this installed, I checked Device Manager to see if there were any errors and I found nothing. I assumed everything was fine. I decided to check Devices and Printers and under my laptop icon, there was a yellow icon with an exclamation point on it. I decided to run the troubleshooting option when I right-clicked the icon....it gave me a solution to download a Toshiba password utility program, so I did that and nothing happened, even after restart. Same icon appeared. When I clicked on the icon a second time, I noticed that the model of my computer at the bottom of this window, changed from L505 to TIAS. I have no idea what this is. I decided to do another reformat on my hard drive. This time, I ignored the optional updates. I checked Devices and Printers again, the same icon appeared but the model of my computer said L505, like it should. There is something in the optional updates that is changing this. Could it be the Intel chipset driver that the optional update is pushing? I'm not sure. I went back to Device Manager, th... Read more

Hello,
In 'folder options' the action of 'show' and 'don't show' hidden files have got interchanged.

So, when I select 'don't show' hidden files are shown, and vice versa.

How to get this back to normal?
Thanks!

I am trying to setup a default user or machine setup for how win7 handles folder view options. I want show hidden folders to be set to on for all users and the hide extensions for know file types to be unchecked or turned off ffor all users (so extensions show)
I have located them in the registry but they do not seem to be applied to all users.
Below is the registry settings I have set

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"HideFileExt"=dword:00000000

When I create a new account to test the folder options are still hiding hidden files and not showing extensions.

Any suggestions

thx

A:show hidden folders show file extensions thru registry

You're close but in the wrong area.

Code:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"HideFileExt"=dword:00000000
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
show and hide files is a profile specific key and therefore can be modified by user accounts. if you would like to change the default, navigate to key:
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\advanced\folder\hidden and \hidefileext
there are keys in there that set default behaviors.

In Appearance Files View, clearing the 2 buttons to reveal hidden files does not allow access to, for instance, C documents and settings, which has a padlock next to it, and others.

I had reinstalled the OS from within the machine and uninstalled any junk such as games etc. Have Avast free, super antispyware, Spybot, all of which find no threat Have run Kasperski one-time virus removal tool and; no threat. Running Winaso registry cleaner some time ago revealed 500 odd registry errors that were fixed and a subsequent run some time later revealed few problems. Running Winaso again yesterday discovered hundreds of errors again.

Kaspersky seemed to have trouble getting past; PE_Patch.Juba, and Googling suggests there may be something hidden in there.

This machine runs well enough but Firefox not responding, and slowness on internet activity are symptoms.

Do I have a virus?

Welcome to the forum.

The "Documents and settings" folder has been obsolete since Vista. You should be using the "Users" folder". The "Documents and settings" folder is just a link maintained for compatibility with old software. Windows Explorer will never give you access by this route no matter what you do.

The "System Volume information" folder has special protection, even from an admin account, and should not be accessed unless you really understand what you are doing.

Registry cleaners are more trouble than they are worth and should be avoided. The validity of the errors found is often questionable. Many will find errors after a clean install. Others will find many errors and supposedly correct them but after another scan it will find the same errors. They have numerous pother problems as well.

Hi,

I am guessing this will be either incredibly easy and I am missing something, or incredibly difficult to achieve.

But what I am wanting is to setup my system so that one partition has the ability to view all of the hidden windows files and folders and also hidden system files.

However at the same time for none other partitions on my PC to have this ability.

I can set this up affecting all paritions but there are some that I do not want this feature on.

I know I can laboriously keep switching it back and forth on the drive I want but I would not like to have to do this unless absolutely necessary.

So does anyone know any method that I can achieve what I am wanting.

Thanks

When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.

Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.

In older OSs, it was necessary to go into Safe Mode to remove ghost devices occassionally, however in x64 XP the Device Manager has a function to show "Hidden Devices". When I select this, a number of devices appears including a wad of non-plug and play drivers of different sorts and a handfull of network adapters. I do not use the extra network adapters, because I'm on dialup, but I'm not sure if the non-plug and play drivers are in use or not. The question is, are these hidden devices like ghost devices, or are they hidden, but essential devices?

A:Hidden Devices

Don't worry about the non-PnP devices. However, you'll sometimes need to do that trick to remove phantom USB drives if they're suddenly causing a real USB drive to be unrecognized.

I recently uninstalled a usb logitech headset and tried to put my old analog headset back in and it would not work. I then detected through view on device managers the invisable driver and also uninstalled it. It still will not work and when I do a driver detector scan I still show having

"USB Composite Device - Logitech USB Headset"
"USB Mass Storage Device - U3 Cruzer Micro"

They are under "Unplugged Devices".

I am using a trial version of Driver Detective to find these and don't want to buy it. So I was wondering if these two(for sure the first one) need to be uninstalled before I can hook up another headset how else could I go about uninstalling them? Or would another usb headset just install over them without a problem?

A:Device manager hidden devices.

If you have uninstalled all of those, and;

You don't have anything else from Logitech/Cruzer,
just go to Start->Run->Regedit
then Edit->Find->Find next

Delete everything.
Reboot.
Pray.

EDIT:

No problem is so huge (in these small spheres) that it couldn't be solved with free software.

So never ever go buy anything unless you area SURE it is exactly what you need.

Hi again Notion
There's a difference between hidden files and system files. To view hidden files, you need to check Show hidden files, folders and drives in the Folder Options. From there, if you want to see the system files you need to unchecked Hide protected operating system files (recommended). Then you'll see every files and folders on your system.

How do you verify that Windows is configured to show hidden files and protected operating system files?

A:Show hidden files

Here is a slick trick

Go to your start menu and click on Help and Support
In the search type " show hidden files" and hit enter.

#2 in the list is Display Hidden files and folders

The screen on the right tells you where to find and modify this information. Its the same place for showing system files.

Not really a detrimental problem going on here, but it is a mild concern. I can't find any way to show my hidden files. I've searched around and tried the following methods:

My Computer> Tools> Folder Options
(There isn't a "Folder Options" Tab)

Control Panel> Appearance and themes> Folder Options
(There isn't a "Folder Options" Icon)

any ideas here...
it's kinda discomforting that that function would just disappear... almost virus-like.

::Hopefully awaits an answer::

Hello:  I wanted to delete every fragment of AVG TuneUp, and thought I had done so, both with manual means and via the tool they claim removes everything.  I ran a scan recently to check if all my stuff was up to date, and voila, a component of AVG is still there.  Furthermore, I ran a FRST scan to see where it's located and it's in a hidden folder (not cool). Tried to research how to unhide it and nothing works.  I don't want to venture into FRST fixlist territory or the registry because I don't know what I'm doing.  Thanks for any guidance.   Windows 8.1 by the way.

If the FRST and Addition texts are needed, I'll load them.

I believe this happened awhile ago with an old virus, but I cannot show my hidden files. When I go into folder options there is only the File Types tab, nothing else. I think I need to show hidden files so that I can remove a nasty form of the Security Tools virus. I saw something about it in another post, and I can't make my hidden folders show up.

On startup and for three minutes at the most, the show hidden icons button is giving me an odd glitch upon being clicked.

If you don't know what I mean by 'show hidden icons button' it's the furthest left button on the taskbar in this picture below.

Basically, whenever I click that button from anywhere up to 3 minutes after startup, the icons start flickering and they are highlighted in a cycle to the left and the tray can't be opened. The problem seems to also be occurring in other situations as well such as when I click the button next to shutdown in the start menu in order to expand the options to 'restart' and 'sleep' among other things. These options are rapidly cycled through making it impossible to click anything. Lastly, I noticed that if I try to left-click and drag something like a web page or the steam page on my desktop, the page immediately begins moving to the left across the screen.

Again, all of this only happens for about 3 minutes after startup at the most and then everything operates as it should. This just began happening again (it happened several months ago for a short period of time and then stopped) and I haven't made any changes to windows.

A:Show Hidden Icons Bug

Very strange.
Try this.
Right tick on Desktop and select View. Then make sure that Auto Arrange and Align icons to Grid are NOT checked.

I can't remember what puts the little red X on the flag.

Have you run and security scans looking for bad guys?

My touchscreen has been unresponsive, and I believe I have pinpointed why, I just don't know how to fix it. In device manager when I expand the Human Interface Devices section, I find only 2 driversBut When I click "show hidden devices" the other 4 (including HID-compliant touch screen) show up.I selected to update each of these 4 hidden devices, but they were already had the latest update. How to I  "unhide" these devices?There is a picture of what I mean attached. Note: I have already restarted the laptop, and I even restored it to factory settings, and have seen no results from those actions.Also, I have had troubles finding these drivers to redownload on the internet Thanks for the help!
