Microsoft Makes Windows 10 Updates Smaller and Faster with New OS Feature

Q: Microsoft Makes Windows 10 Updates Smaller and Faster with New OS Feature

Microsoft Makes Windows 10 Updates Smaller and Faster with New OS Feature

Microsoft has officially introduced the new so-called Unified Update Platform (UUP) which is the company?s latest attempt to make Windows 10 updates smaller and faster on both PCs and smartphones.

In essence, UUP is a new technology that makes it possible for Windows 10 devices to download only the changes that have been implemented since the previous update, which should significantly improve the delivery of large OS updates, as it?s the case of the upcoming Creators Update due in early 2017. These differential updates thus make it possible to receive only the latest improvements and not a full OS build.

UUP will be available on PCs and smartphones powered by Windows 10, but not on Xbox One consoles, as Microsoft is not shipping updates via Windows Updates here.

The company explains that download size can be decreased by as much as 35 percent, which is definitely a big achievement and comes in handy especially for users with slow Internet or limited bandwidth.

Faster checking for updates
Microsoft says that it?s also working on making checking for updates more efficient by changing how the system works on Windows 10 devices.

?We are reducing the update data sent to client devices as well as the amount of processing we are doing on devices, this especially important for devices built on the Mobile OS. Using UUP, when your device checks for updates, the Windows Update service will evaluate which updates are needed by a given device,? the company explained.

?The Windows Update service then returns these updates to the device for download and install. Because more processing is being done by the service, this will lead to faster checks for update operations.?

The new UUP is currently available for testing on mobile devices for Windows insiders and makes its debut with Windows 10 build 14959, but all users should be able to see it at work in the upcoming Creators Update due in the spring. Obviously, the system is expected to receive several improvements in the coming months before the Creators Update goes live and insiders will be the first to try them out.Click to expand...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Microsoft confirms no more Windows 10 feature updates in 2016; two coming in 2017

Microsoft published a TechNet blog post on Tuesday regarding what's new in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. In the article, the company confirmed that it has two feature updates planned for 2017, but no more for this year.

Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.

The news is right in line with current rumors. Tuesday's Anniversary Update would be the one feature update for this year, and Redstone 2 - the codename for the next major Windows 10 update - isn't slated to arrive until April 2017. Redstone 3 is rumored as well, but without any release timing, so with today's news, it's presumably late 2017.

It's also in line with what Microsoft has already said. Back in May, the firm said that it would be pushing two feature updates for Windows 10 every year.

The obvious question that you're probably asking is, if Microsoft said that it would release two updates per year, why would the company only release one this year? Well, when Microsoft says the word 'year', it could mean a calendar year, or it could mean a fiscal year, which would be over at the end of June. With that in mind, the firm has released two major updates for Windows 10 every year, and is on pace to do so, even with Redstone 2 coming in April.

I am building a new computer with new hardware and I want to OS to run the fastest possible. Large capacity hard drives are so cheep these days. If I buy a 750GB 7200rpm hard drive and partition it say for example 50GB's for the OS and the rest for storage because the OS is on the smaller partition would it make the OS run faster. Or another example I was thinking about was to have two hard drives one 40GB 7200rpm with the OS on it and a 2nd 500GB 7200rpm would this make the OS run the fastest?

Also a 2nd question to run a raid set up does both drives have to be the same capacity? for example both have to be 500GB or whatever.

A:Will Windows XP run faster on a smaller hardrive

For the RAID question, it depends on the RAID configuration. http://www.pcworld.com/article/13287...n_your_pc.html

The hard drive on my laptop is making noises so I purchased a slightly smaller hard drive (existing HD 120 GB, new HD is 100 GB) and I am trying to use Vista's back up and restore feature.

The active partition is 60GB and I backed it up to my external USB drive and that went well, but when I try to restore the image (which says is only 44 GB large) to my 100 GB drive I get an error message saying that the drive is too small.

Is there anything I can do to copy image from a larger drive to a smaller drive, even though the data on the smaller drive is less than the data on the new drive?

Thanks in advance!

Once loaded it has a toggle switch between Explorer8/Metro and Explorer7/Orb Start Menu.

In effect you're running either Explorer 7 or 8. When using Ex7 Metro is totally gone, on boot and after boot; but only a click away if you need to access it from the active GUI.

I'm using it on Enterprise 8, and after all available updates still runs seamless. And W8 on SSD SATA3 with I5 CPU absolutely flies.

Have tried all of the rest and this is an exact replica of Win7 Start, even had all my defaults loaded after installing in 10 seconds using my 7 files off adjoining partition.

But it is much faster than either 7 or 8 normally is, due to the 8 Metro features not being loaded into RAM.

IMO with this Start menu Win8 would be nearly perfect. Now I want my gadgets back!

Windows 10 users will lose the existing " placeholders" file storage feature once Microsoft goes through with its plans to unify the synchronization engine used with the OneDrive cloud storage service.

Placeholders, which Microsoft also calls " smart files," lets users browse files stored across in the cloud without those files actually taking up disk space on their devices. The feature displays a file's icon and metadata information, while the bits of the actual file are stored in the OneDrive service datacenters.

Windows 10, when it is released later this year, won't include the engine for the placeholders feature. Instead, Microsoft will issue an update to Windows 10 later this calendar year that will add "the core capabilities of placeholders," according to Chris Jones, corporate vice president of OneDrive and SharePoint, who explained the changes to come in a blog post last week.

I have lost a Microsoft Word feature (Microsoft Office XP Professional with Front Page) from my computer and I do not have the relevant disc here to restore it. What is coming up is "Error 1706 - C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office10/1033/SETUP.HLP".

I have done several things that might have caused this part of my program to become lost. I set up some limited user accounts. I also used Tweak XP Pro and removed what were listed as unnecessary files, having read that these could easily be restored from the Recycle Bin if necessary. I then... ouch, dumb.... unthinkingly emptied the Recycle Bin.

I have tried System Restore on XP. I did a Registry Restore on Advanced Installer Pro (which was the program with which I emptied the Recycle Bin). I also removed Tweak XP Pro, which was supposed to restore the system to the same state it was in before the installation. None of these have worked. I really need to get back whatever is lost, preferably without having to access the relevant disc which I do not have with me.

I am using a laptop with Windows XP SP2. Would a program like File-Saver get back this feature? What else can I do? I need a simple solution!

I would sure appreciate help if you know the solution to this issue.

Regards, Cheryl

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

We were unable to get Office updated with Chrome as the default brower. Even using IE and pasting in the Windows update link directly in, the option to use MS Update is hidden. For what possible purpose?
Simply by setting IE as the default and using the EXACT SAME LINK, the option is now present. Wow! Really?

Yesterday I serviced a Win7 Toshiba laptop that was in tough shape: it's performance was terrible. A big part of the problem was that the computer was umpteen behind in Windows Updates plus the owner had just about every Microsoft Office product and all of them needed Windows Updates, both security and updates. OK that's not the first time I've seen that; however, the owner uses Google Chrome as his browser.
My questions are
Aren't Microsoft's Windows Updates supposed to be kept up to date even when a different browser is being used?
And doesn't Google Chrome or other browsers have a method for that to happen?
Fortunately the good news is the computer is back to running like new again.

A:Do non-microsoft browsers have a method for Microsoft's Windows Updates?

Only Microsoft products (and certain drivers pushed via Windows Updates) are being updated via Windows Updates. Other products and web browsers uses their own update process/program. Google Chrome uses the Google Update Program, while Mozilla Firefox uses the Mozilla Maintenance Service (I think). So no, Windows Update isn't responsible for the update of other web browsers, other than Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge (on Windows 10).

The most probable cause of your problem is
System Restore points.
Reduce the amount of space that they occupy

Run a full anti virus scan, download and run a full scan with malwarebytes

or

It's not that big of a deal as I'm the only user, but it's just irritating as I know the Office install must have decided this was best for me

is there a way to stop the updates Windows 10 makes ?

A:The updates Windows10 makes ticks me off .

First of all, let's get to the root of why you're upset with the updates. Are they causing problems with your machine? I know, for instance, the Anniversary Update caused some issues, and one of the updates to resolve those also "broke" PowerShell on Win 10 PCs. Nevertheless, is there something specific?

We have approximately 5-to-6,000 machines, that we use in K-12 Education... The problem arises during the ever-increasing 'Testing' environments...

We are constantly having Student Computers either 'Installing', 'Restarting', from Updates, or something in between, that causes the machines being used for 'Testing' to either become 'unresponsive', or such an INTERRUPTION due to Updates, and Restarting
(both of which causes the unit(s) in question to become USELESS), that it knocks the kids out of testing, at which point they have to sit (sometimes for an hour or more) while the machine installs and subsequently restarts (sometimes 2-to-3 times) before
the student can get back on, and continue testing.

The frustration, at this point, has become SO INFURIATING, that the ENTIRE District has resorted to completely turning off Updates, from Microsoft, for the entire school year, because, the teachers can't get any 'useable' time for 'instruction OR testing,
on the machines.

There has got to be a way, that ALL OF THE UPDATES can be downloaded AND INSTALLED, and then either have the machine NOT attempt to 'Restart', or anything (including that STUPID damned "Do Not Power Down Your Machine Installing 1 of 83 Updates..."

I have looked at ALL of the Options for what can be done for Auto-Update, and none of them allows for the Installation of Updates without ANY Interruption/Input from the user, and without the machine doing an AUTO-Restart, both... Read more

Is there any help out there?

I run a small home Office with 2 computers both loaded with Windows XP Pro and Office 2003 Pro. Anti-Virus installed is AVG Free Version 8.

When I turn off computers I am told that windows will update with "x" number of updates and turn off automatically. This "x" number only increases evry time I turn the computers off. Computer 1 also gives AVG update message as follows: "Updates have been installed and computer needs to reboot for updates to take effect" This is displayed shortly after booting. No matter how many times I reboot the computer this message appears and Microsoft message appears during turning off state.

I have reistalled windows and Office on this computer but the only differance is the number of updates needed to be installed. Presently on this computer updates = 15 and on other computer updates are 7.

I have done virus scans and Sypware detection, Cleaned registry, clean disk, defrag etc....

I have also followed instructions on "Joyof60's" and "Mattiq89ch" threads posted on this site without much improvements.

Is there a any hope for me?

Maybe somebody from Microsoft can give a hint of where the fix is located?

Help!!!!

I went to Microsoft Windows Updates and thankfully I dont' have any critical updates, but I check under the other updates. Are any of these really required?http://yanowhiz.netrulon.com/updates.png

A:Microsoft Windows Updates

Personally, I install all updates from M$, that is just me though. Of the four you have showing, I would recommend for sure installing the outlook express update, the others are your choice. If you do install any, make to sure to check again because I know that the net framework will have a critical update to it.Also, you should not insert pictures into the forum like you did here. It is better to get an account at an image hosting site and post a link to the photo. There are many that are available for free. Here is a link to an article which lists many of them: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/6602/image-hosting/I use a couple but Image Shack works pretty well and is easy to use.

After factory-installing Windows 10 on PC's that were not compatible, is HP possibly preventing those PCs from connecting to Microsoft update and updating the PC's themselves in an effort to resolve the obviously multiple problems users encounter. Is
this why Microsoft error report logs are indicating failed error reporting; updates through settings often showed as failed and registry HCKEYS preventing reboot with Microsoft services only, as well as many stopped Microsoft services? Along with all the daily
use problems on a less than 1 month old new device directly received from HP.

All this after returning to stores, 3 devices that showed similar behaviors. My bad for keeping faith in HP.  On one of the devices I had to return. The minute I turned it on it showed a message that restore operation had failed,
I immediately repacked and returned it. Is this the new standard for PC's or is it just HP? Or is this simply a Windows 10 problem as they claim?

Hello all,

These days we have been getting many problems with Windows updates issue's. Some had issue's with installation/un-installation and some of users are complaining that everytime they install and configure the updates and after the restart the number of updates getting increased everytime they do this task.

I encountered a problem with Windows update in (Windows7 - Pro SP1),wherein there was only 1 update which was not getting installed and was completely grayed our that means we can't select/de-select the update.I have found a resolution and it worked for me very well and is applicable on all Windows operating systems (XP,Win Vista,7,8,8.1).Though we can't say this a permanent fix but still we can try this task to resolve many problems with Windows updates. Please review this suggestion and also suggest if anything is missing or required to make it more useful and helpful.

Below are the following steps:-
SoftwareDistribution:

Start > Run > (type or copy/paste) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Rename the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type or copy/paste) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder
In Windows Explo?e view, search for and locate the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
Right-click on the folder and select the 'Rename' option and change the name to:
"SoftwareDistributionOld"
Close the window.

3. Start the Automat... Read more

MS makes profits by selling copies of Windows.

The more copies of Windows that MS sells, the more profit MS makes.

Most people buy some version of Windows when they buy a new computer, and MS then makes a profit.

But most people don't buy a new computer until they need one, delaying MS's profits.

If MS can come up with a good new OS, people will buy it for their current computer, thus increasing MS's profits.

If the New OS forces users to buy a new computer powerful enough to operate it, MS will still make an extra profit. But that strategy failed with Windows Vista.

If Win 8 is popular on touchscreen devices, people will buy more touchscreen devices, increasing MS's profits.

By pressuring you to use Metro, MS prepares you to buy smaller touchscreen devices running Win 8, and this will increase MS's profits.

So MS knows what it's doing. It is setting you up to buy various smaller devices that will run Win 8, and thus they will increase their profits.

A:How Microsoft Makes Profits

So in a nutshell, you're saying you don't believe in progress and companies making profits. Maybe they should do what RIM and Nokia have done, just sit back and go broke.

Is there a difference between 'Quality', 'Definition' or 'Other' Windows 10 updates and 'Feature' updates?

When my PC carries out 'Quality', 'Definition' or 'Other' updates they work perfectly.

'Feature' updates always fail drastically. I have tried the v1809 to v1909 Feature update several times and each time the download and install phases appear to complete successfully with no error messages, but the restart phase concludes with the BSOD and the stopcode error message ?unmountable boot volume?.

I have a spare bootable drive containing Windows 10 and I used it to examine my C drive. Each time it reports that the C partition has been deleted.

Fortunately I have installed Rollback RX and I was able to revert my C drive to its former state.

I tried Chkdsk, Windows 10 Repair Upgrade and Clean Boot. Same result.

Can anyone help to identify what is going on?

Hey,

I'm trying to disable that horrible auto-restart feature, but I can only get so far because I'm computer illiterate.

Can someone translate the directions into lay(wo)man's terms? I know I first need to get into the registry, but I don't know how to get there. I know I need to edit HKEY_something_something, but I'm not sure which one or what it needs to be changed to. Etc, etc.

Thanks.

Hello,

With my Windows 7 Home Premium I use Microsoft Word Starter 2010, which came preloaded to my laptop. I save much information in it's standard 'document' page. When I click on a saved document, after about 5 seconds it displays the small window "Microsoft Word Starter 2010" and goes through some process, telling me it is 'starting', 'processing' and takes a further 10 to 20 seconds for the actual document to open. This happens even when opening a blank document. Is there any way that I can speed up the opening of a document.

Regards.
