Vivaldi web browser

Q: Vivaldi web browser

Almost two years ago, the Norwegian browser firm Opera ripped out the guts of its product and adopted the more standard WebKit and Chromium technologies, essentially making it more like rivals Chrome and Safari. But it wasn?t just Opera?s innards that changed; the browser also became more streamlined and perhaps less? geeky.

Many Opera fans were deeply displeased at the loss of what they saw as key differentiating functionality. So now Jon von Tetzchner, the man who founded Opera and who would probably never have allowed those drastic feature changes, is back to serve this hard core with a new browser called Vivaldi.

Old meets new
Vivaldi doesn?t mark a return to Opera?s old internals ? it uses Chromium as a base and has a user interface that is itself unusually built using web technologies ? but it does bring back features such as tab stacking, an advanced bookmark manager, keyboard shortcuts, and the ability to start with multiple session windows.

Opera used to be ?more feature-rich, for a crowd of users that want more from their browser,? von Tetzchner told me:

After I quit [as CEO in 2010, then fully in 2011], Opera changed their philosophy. They made kind of a browser that?s more in line with most of the other browsers and doesn?t have a lot of features. The focus is in a way on making the browser disappear, and I think there?s a lot of people that want something different.

While these users could install Chrome with ?30 extensions? to get all the functionality they want, von Tetzchner argued, now they can install Vivaldi and get everything in the main package.
Gigaom rendered on Vivaldi technical preview

Based on the quick play I?ve had with the first Vivaldi technical preview, publicly released on Tuesday, there?s more to it than just reviving the old Opera feel (though that?s a clear aim). For example, the HTML5-based UI allows the browser to rather neatly adopt the color scheme for the page being visited. The use of web technologies for the front end also makes it easier to launch cross-platform ? the technical preview is available for Windows, OS X and Linux right from the start.
Future features
The ?sister service? to the browser, the Vivaldi.net community suite, already launched quietly about a year back. This was in many ways a replacement for the old, ditched My Opera community, and it provides blogging and forum functionality.

?We believe it will be the natural playing ground for those that are using the browser, with a free mail service and a place you can put your photos,? von Tetzchner said, noting that the mail servers are based in Iceland. ?It?s not really a commercial site; we haven?t spent a lot of time marketing it. But we will add more functionality and change it gradually.?

Von Tetzchner told me more new browser features will be revealed by the time Vivaldi reaches its first full version (WebRTC will likely be supported, for instance.) A mobile version is also in the works, though von Tetzchner wouldn?t say more on that subject than ?We?re going for a browser that has more functionality than what you?re used to, but also has more different ways to do things ? the principle of that will be the same on mobile as it is on desktop.?

The Vivaldi team numbers around 25, a ?substantial part? of which is the technical team, and more than half of which are former Opera workers. Von Tetzchner is personally funding it all for now, but the browser?s business model will be the standard affiliate-deal affair.

Will Vivaldi be big? It?s hard to say ? Opera itself hasn?t broke past a market share of a few percent for many years, apart from in the feature-phone market. But Vivaldi does seem to combine a fresh new look with an impressively old-school appeal to the power user, and it may well find its niche. Perhaps not everyone does want the browser to just disappear into the background after all.

The Vivaldi web browser has been released to the public as a technical preview. Vivaldi enters the browser industry with three guiding principles: continuous innovation, a strong focus on community and a respect for the unique needs of each person who uses the browser.

Hi folks anyone else trying the new Vivaldi browser?

No extensions yet but I will enquire, it has the familiar Opera style speed dial and I like the way cookies can be deleted, it also lists them separately for you and from here 11 cookies are listed from this site for example, I can delete all or pick which site individually.

Web Of Trust, HTTPS-everywhere would be nice along with a few others, what extensions do you use and why, regardless of which browser you currently favour?

Obviously not wanting to go off topic but there may be some I haven't used and would maybe when I send feedback suggest them also.

I'd sum up after a quick mess with it that it's a bit Spartan at the moment and Firefox is still my preferred browser for speed, stability, looks, extensions available and general ease of use.

Thanks, Ian.

I think Standalone means, Offline installer?

Standalone software may refer to:
Computer software that can work offline, i.e. does not necessarily require network connection to function
Software that is not a part of some bundled software
A program that is run as a separate computer process, not an add-on of an existing process
Standalone program, a program that does not require operating system's services to run
A portable application, which can be run without the need for installation procedure
Stand-alone expansion pack, expansion packs that do not require the original game

Vivaldi browser heavy users & users share your experience here plzz.

And plzz reply the following in your post ---
1. Are you running Vivaldi as your main browser?
2. Vivaldi 32 or 64 Bits Browser?
3. Vivaldi Installed or Portable/Standalone?
4. Your experience with Vivaldi, add-ons compatibility, features you miss, etc...

A:Vivaldi Browser Heavy Users & Users

1. Secondary Browser
2. 32 Bits
3. Portable/Standalone
4. Overall experience good. I only use Google Translate & IDM extension. IDM video download bar doesn't appear on videos. I miss inbuilt translator, flash, etc... Sometimes I notice page load takes little time.

And I would like "Open link in new tab" work as Chrome or an option to set that way. "Open link in background tab" is the 3rd option & as a Chrome user I have the habit of clicking 1st option so gets annoying.

I wanted to try out the new Vivaldi browser, so I downloaded and installed the latest v. 1.0.435.46. It's supposedly running, and Task Manager tells me it's using about 67 MB of RAM, but it doesn't appear in any windows. Tried a reinstall too. Would this be an XP problem? I can't run Chrome and sometimes Opera won't run in XP.Edit: Moved topic from Windows XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:XP + Vivaldi

Since XP is no longer a supported. You will find this is a recurring theme of finding secondary browsers of the latest release working in XP. Since you already find that Chrome does not work with XP. Vivaldi is a Chromium based browser, it will not work in XP either unfortunately. You can see this discussed here: https://vivaldi.net/fr/forum/vivaldi-browser/8560-vivaldi-on-windows-xp-and-vista

Vivaldi 1.0 Benchmark Tests from the web

Vivaldi 1.0 is now dominating the news these days.People are praising and writing reviews on this new browser, so I've decided to post 3 Benchmark tests found along the way.
1. Ghacks :
Code:

Hardware: not specified
2. Computerbild.de :
Code:
http://www.computerbild.de/artikel/cb-Tests-Software-Vivaldi-Browser-Download-Screenshots-14012791.html

The benchmark SunSpider , V8 and Octane check the speed in the preparation of JavaScript.
The Acid3 test analyzes the conformity to current web standards.
Peacekeeper (Pk) focuses on HTML5 elements.
In SunSpider, a low value (in seconds) is better. In V8, Octane, Peacekeeper and Acid3, a high value (in points / runs) is better.

Hardware : The test PC COMPUTER BILD: a notebook with an Intel Pentium T2390 (dual core at 1.86 GHz), 3 gigabytes of RAM and Windows 10 (32 bit).
3. Chip.de :
Code:
http://www.chip.de/artikel/Vivaldi-Browser-Test_76313444.html

Does not do well in comparison to the others in the JetStream test.

Hardware: not specified.

Vivaldi seems to be doing better in most of the benchmark tests provided along with the reviews. Of course, individual hardware matters.Users are also welcome to try on their own and post the results. You can also post any other benchmark tests you come across(with the source).

Hi

This morning I installed the latest version of Vivaldi, went to Channel 4's catch up page, All4 to watch a TV programme and got a message saying I needed to switch off my ad blocker (this would have been done permanently on All4 but I had to reinstall Vivaldi from scratch at the weekend and delete all of my settings as my PC to had a bit of a meltdown!) so I switched off Ad Block Plus on that page, then switched off Vivaldi's built-in ad blocker, refreshed and tried again - it still said I needed to switch off my ad blocker.

I therefore disabled ABP on the extensions page and added U Block Origin instead. Switched UBO off on All4, pressed 'play' and got the same message. I then disabled UBO on the extensions page so I had no ad blockers running at all, refreshed All4 & clicked play....it still said I had an ad blocker running!

Any ideas as to what to do next, please? It's obviously not ABP or UBO that's the problem if it's still saying it when neither is working and there doesn't appear to be any other setting I can change in Vivaldi so I'm at a loss! I'll probably end up just watching All4 on my horrendously slow tablet in future if I can't get it to work!

Thank you,

Ian.

Running latest Windows 10 and Vivaldi (a Chrome-based browser) versions. Beginning a least a month or two ago I lost the ability to type into Evernote Web Clipper fields. I've since learned that this also happens with third party sites in frames. I can, however, paste into the fields! Surprisingly, I find that sometimes (but usually not) after I paste into an Evernote Web Clipper field, I can then type into that or other fields in the form!?!

I have tried rebooting, deleting Cache and reinstalling Vivaldi. No joy.

We have another PC in the house with a similar configuration that does not show this bizarre problem.

Hello, B.C.

My english is not 100% perfect, so I apologize.

After looking at how many problems were solved here I wanted to show mine, since yesterday, while not browsing or playing a fullscreen game, my default browser randomly opens, if I am playing a game, it minimizes it which makes it unplayable. And when I am browsing, no matter what browser is, my current tab switch to the browser home page, for example, In opera my home page is the speed dial, while browsing on a website e.j. wikipedia or any other, it changes to the browser home page for no reason, and that happens in all browsers, no matter what the default one is.

I do believe this is caused by a malware. I scanned my computer with both avast! Free Antivirus and Windows Defender and found nothing. I deleted opera and made firefox my default browser, it randomly opened constantly as it did with opera. I restored my system to 04/12/12 and the problem was still present (I also rebooted many times), however, as I deleted opera when restoring my system it was still there as my default browser but, when whatever was causing the problem attempted to launch it, it popped up a window telling that the launcher file could not be run, and so that window popped up randomly and it was actually the same thing, as when I deleted the launcher file, it stopped popping up the window (and a browser, because I had no default browser). When clicking the opera icon in my tool bar it opened opera like it was never rem... Read more

RANDOM EXECUTION OF 'DEFAULT' BROWSER / OR SENDING CURRENT BROWSER TO 'HOME PAGE'
It's now 2018. I'm using Windows 10 version 1607. This very same issue in the post

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/519342/default-internet-browser-keeps-opening-randomly/

has been plaguing me for several months.
My 'default' browser is set to Microsoft Edge.
If I am running a non-browser app then the Microsoft Edge (ME) will open randomly to its set startup page. It won't go to a bogus URL ... just the main page as configured in my ME settings.
If, on the other hand, I am working with Firefox or Chrome or Opera, that browser will randomly go to the 'home page' as defined in that browser settings.
Every available malware-detection app already mentioned in previous posts here has been run and no issues detected.
Checking and repairing the integrity of my system using DISM and SFC both do nothing to fix the issue.
I'm almost certain this issue is caused by the Windows 10 OS trying to get out on the internet to do something. Whatever this 'something' is it is unsuccessful and it only gets as far as activating the browser 'home page'.
Has anyone got any suggestions as to how to resolve this issue?
TIA
John

Hi,

I'm pretty sure I'm infected with something. Looks like I was asked to upgrade my Flash software but apparently it wasn't a legite Adobe. I did a quick search on Conduit search and toolbar removal, as this is what I saw on my IE next, with urls being redirected to some non-existing ones, IE home page was changed to something else (though I tried changing it back from Internet Options). Can you please help?

Hello,

I am amazed that I could not find a thread talking about BeEF! BeEF is short from Browser Exploitation Framework and it is scary easy to use. It's a javascript code that is inserted into website. All the victim has to do is visit the website and the browser is "hooked". The hooked browser session pops up in the attackers BeEF web GUI. From there the attacker can use about 255 different commands to compromise the OS and/or steal credentials.

So far only Symantecs Norton security has been the only AV/AM/Tool to detect and block the exploit. I have tested the exploit agains Bitdefender, Sophos, Malwarebytes, Emsisoft, Comodo, Windows defender and anti-exploits such as Malwarebytes Anti-exploit and Hitman Pro.Alert. I have also tried some other tools like Spyshelter. If it wasn't for Norton I would be sure that there is no software that can detect the exploit.

Does anybody know any other software than Norton that could even detect the malicious js script?

Hello. I just wanted to give a quick rundown of what issues I am having, as well as note a few problems during the recommended procedure for posting here. First, I did not run GMER as I am running a 64-bit OS. Second, I have been having occasional browser redirects. It does not seem to have any restriction as to where it will happen. From League of Legends forums, to bleeping computer forums, to google searches. It can and does happen at random fairly frequently (maybe once every 10-15 minutes when browsing the internet).

The white box is actually up on my browser screen as I type this post. It will typically only show up on forum type sites from what I have seen. It will say "Recommended for You" and have an 'x' in the upper right corner. When clicked, it just shrinks down to the "Recommended for You" box again.

I have included the dds.txt copy/paste below, as well as attached the attach.txt to this post. You guys are awesome, looking forward to hearing from you.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop that is running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2.

Recently, I've noticed that when using Internet Explorer, occasionally, I'll click a link in Google and it will open a 'generic' search site that has nothing to do with the original Google link. Also, the browser will unexpectedly close for no reason.
There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to these two occurances - i.e. I can't reproduce either one with specific actions - they occur seemingly completely randomly.

Suspecting a virus, I went to manually update McAfee VirusScan and then scan the system, but get the following error:
"The ordinal 1112 could not be located in the dynamic link library WSOCK32.dll."

Of course, I suspect something suspicious on the computer.... How do I check/scan begin to diagnose/fix the problem?

Been crippled for a week by what appears to be a series of incredibly malignant viruses. Search sites redirecting (and TDSSKiller not opening even when renamed), multiple crashes when using browser, slow processing speed, and incredibly inconsistent CPU usage (jumping 10-50 percent at all times). I've also had internet explorer open without request, seems to be an additional adware. Pretty well boned here, and I would tremendously love some help.

As an additional note to the infection's severity, it took me almost a week in order to successfully run a GMER scan. Every other time (regardless of if I was in safe or normal operating mode), GMER would cause a critical system crash. Ugh.

Thanks for all possible help!

Hi,
I've been having a few problems with my browser redirecting to the google home page. I've just noticed this - so far its only happened when I've tried to access Myspace, which is a site I very rarely use, but it only happens when I'm running OpenVPN. On my plain ISP connection the page loads up OK. Not sure if I have a problem, but this certainly is odd beahviour.

a while ago my mom's laptop was stolen. because of that she's been using my computer. well, a little while after she did i think some kind of virus got onto the computer. the warning bells sounded when i began hearing these advertisements playing for different products when a browser wasn't even open. i tried shutting off the computer when this happened and the advertisements kept playing even at the shut down screen, so i had to force quit. after that i installed zonealarm. apparently hotshows.org was trying to connect to the computer but zonealarm blocked it. another ip was also attempting to establish a connection to the pc which zonealarm also blocked. ran an antivirus scan with zonealarm but it turned up nothing so i uninstalled it and went through a number of other scanners including kaspersky and bitdefender which also turned up nothing.

at this point we tried repairing windows with an old xp cd with service pack 1. unfortunately, it did both nothing, made the software on the computer outdated and since the activation key we had no longer worked we had a trial going! fortunately we managed to get it installed and activated again, but that wasn't the least of my worries. apparently this virus or whatever it is is actually blocking the internet connection. google chrome, opera and internet explorer all DO NOT work. opera, for example, says it "cannot connect to proxy server" and "access is denied". ie is especially a problem because i can't use mic... Today, while doing a google search, I stumbled upon this post on these forums:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic449229.htmlThis is EXACTLY the issue that I'm having. Hi all,

Thanks in advance for helping with my problem -- I really appreciate it.

Last weekend I got a very bad infection that basically rendered my system unusable, i.e., when I tried to launch resident programs such as Word, some message said that the .exe was infected, and asked if I would like to activate my antivirus software. The problem at that time was evidently a rogue antivirus program; I ran several spyware cleaner programs (those that I saw recommended on this forum) and this seems to have been fixed -- so now it looks like I just have this redirect problem.

First, my details:
- Windows XP Service Pack 3
- IE 8
- Firefox 3.5.5
- Chrome 3.0

Here's what happens: When I use any of the above-mentioned browsers to search, using Google or Yahoo, and I click on one of the links in the search results, I get taken to some random, garbage website instead of the one mentioned in the search results.

Also, multiple browser windows open repeatedly -- multiple windows with IE, and multiple tabs with Chrome. This seems to get worse over time, until the next reboot.

Here's what I've tried within the past two days:
- SuperAntiSpyware
- Spybot Search & Destroy
- Malwarebytes' Anti-malware
- Spyware Doctor
- Browser Hijack Recover
- Windows Live Onecare Safety Scanner

Hello! I have seen this problem posted a lot, but I gather that each solution is taylor made, so here it goes:

As other people, I have this problem of random browser redirects when clicking on some links, as well as the annoying popup (sometimes in a cellphone shape) on the lower right corner of my browser's windows (either IE9 or Firefox 14). I have gone into the two browsers' plug-in or add-in controls and disabled anything that I did not recognized as installed by me. This has diminished the problem somewhat, as sometimes the popup comes out empty, but it still comes up.

I am running on Windows 7 Ultimate.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Pedro

Recently installed the latest version of Avant browser. I have set it not to be my default browser or to check if it is default on start up. I have Firefox set as my default browser and to check if it is on start up. The problem is every time I launch Avant and use it it makes itself the default browser. I know this because when I launch Firefox it says it's not the default and also if I wan to set it as the default. I do and when I use Avant again it steals the default browser setting again. I asked about this on the Avant forum and nobody has a solution. Most people on the Avant forum use that browser as their default so they don't care if it makes itself default. Any suggestions on how to stop this? I find this behaviour from a browser to be malware like.

Hi Is there any (ideally open source) software for Windows that can be used on a PC, to monitor the usage of internet from that PC? It would need to include both browser and non-browser sources (e.g. a service that sync's calendar to gmail). So any software on your PC that uses would need to be configured to point to this local internet monitoring software/proxy. The monitoring software/proxy then would be configured to point to the company proxy server (address, port & credentials). Things that come to mind that might be close but not really focused on solving this might be perhaps: Charles Proxy, Fiddler 2, SQUID? The idea would be it could give you a daily/weekly/monthly report of internet upload/download usage on a per program/process/service basis for the PC it is being run on. thanks PS The scope is only monitor Internet usage for the PC that the software is running on. It's just aimed at tracking my own Internet usage at work on my PC from the point of view of the various software I have that does sync to Internet.

A:software to monitor internet usage on an XP PC? (browser + non-browser)

Only thing I know of that comes close it NetLimiter. But I would bet Squid could do it but that is way over my head.

Hi,

What extensions and addons do you have installed? Are there anything that blocks images, that might be causing the problem.

Cheers!

Hello,

I am running Windows XP on a machine at home and was previously using IE. I started getting frequent (about 3-5 an hour) pop-up browsers...usually a :blank page. I ran Spy-Bot and Adware and found several issues which were corrected.

I installed Mozilla and set as the default browser in hopes this would end the problem. No luck. I'm still getting the pop-up browsers from IE in Mozilla.

The Hijack This Log is as follows and I'd be very grateful for any assistance you can provide. Please let me know if you need further information.

Hi All,
Using Win7 Homebasic,
The problem is that after few minutes of logging in, multiple default browser windows open up for no reason. The windows open up in specific time intervals and also on certain events(mouse clicks & explorer.exe). ------ When i surf the internet the browser redirects to the homepage at regular intervals and its intensity increases with time almost to the extent of redirecting every half a second. ------ The fun does not end here if i try another browser it results in the same. These windows keep opening up till the extent of clogging the memory and freezing/crashing my box.
This issue is happening to my system since 1.5 yrs. This is not consistent when i format my drive it was working fine for few months and starts again after few days. Today while i was updating my windows this started again by the time i was playing FIFA in my system and it got stuck because of multiple browser keeps popping up.

I have run the SUPERantispyware to check for viruses or any spyware and got result.Below am posting my result :

When I click on the arrow at the end of the address bar to get to recent browsing history it freezes the browser. At this point, the only recourse is a hard shutdown by holding the power button down. CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't bring up the Task Manager, and doing it twice doesn't force a restart. Using the History button works just fine. It's just the arrow.

I've checked with MBAM,SAS, Avira Antivirus, Avira rootkit scanner,Spybot, and HJT. Also ran Norton Windoctor, because I don't know any other Windows checker. Other than some cookies and temp files, I didn't find anything.

About the same time, I started having a strange problem with pages saved from this site. When I try to open a saved page (from this site only) I get the Windows notice that it has encountered a problem and must close. The error shown in the details section has to do with MSHTL.dll.

Thanks for the time and help. I'm usually able to fix most problems by searching this site and following instructions, but these 2 have me baffled.

Browers, either Google Chrome or Internet Explorer, go into the internet, however after about 1 - 2mintes of use, everthing freezes. If I go into att e mail, it ceases taking commands. Chrome will also stop taking commands.

I ran AD Ware, also system tools like defrag and clean disk. Also ran Reg Cure. Nothing seems to help. This is a new problem. I don't know whether to use system restore or not...I'd rather not. Do you think it will help?

These problems are so damned annoying. Microsoft and other are just using us all for guinea pigs for their deficient software.

Can you guys help on this? 44 guy

A:browser opens then after a minute or two everything freezes and get browser not respoding

Are you positive that it is only in internet browsers? or is it possible that it could be in other stuff also?

It seems suspect that the whole computer freezes only in a browser much less more than one browser.

I would check hardware and make sure that something else is really going on.

I personally would at least test RAM for errors and also hard drive.

To further narrow it down, does this also happen in Firefox? (look at event viewer also).

Alot of stuff i know, but test this stuff and let us know.
