Lenovo G40-70 Bricked by BIOS Update

Q: Lenovo G40-70 Bricked by BIOS Update

Hi all, Need help on my Lenovo G40-70 that I've just bought 6 months ago where I accidently bricked the laptop after BIOS update. It seems during the BIOS updating process it when well but after 2nd reboot there's some message on the screen that the BIOS failed to update factory setting and it freeze on the message for quiet sometimes. After a long wait I decided to long press Start button for hard reboot. Then the scary part comes in where it seems the laptop can't longer shows the Lenovo logo & cannot even boot to Windows, just black screen. Hope anyone can help me on this and give some advice on what I'm going to do. I would like to tried myself first before ending up with warranty claim since I'm worried I've brick the warranty due to wrong BIOS update procedure....

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Lenovo G40-70 Bricked by BIOS Update

hi mahdhir2005,

Im sorry to hear that.

I would suggest you call the Lenovo Technical Team regarding the Issue. If it is the BIOS that's causing the issue then there maybe no source or option to have it fixed without they're help or service.

If the BIOS software you downloaded was from a legit Lenovo Site and correct model, then I think It will be ok to Just report them what happened and ask for possible option.

Hope this helped
Thanks!

Hello Lenovo community.I own a s205 and have been quite happy with it, that is until yesterday when I encountered a problem I can't seem to fix.I wanted to switch from windows 10 to kubuntu. My s205 would be on it's eight OS, but I?ve bricked it somehow - and i think it's the BIOS.What happens now when i boot it is; there is a black non-lit screen for about 10 secs, then it blinks "Lenovo Misto Ontario" (http://puu.sh/ppPdp/e95611ddf1.jpg) extremely quickly, I think it's the beginning of a boot message. - and then it's just a lit black screen from there on out. i've had it on for upward of 20 mins and nothing happens.I suspect it's a BIOS corruption of some sorts but I?m actually not sure. I've tried reinstalling the BIOS, via the Pheonix Crisis Recovery which several threads here has explained. But I don't know if it is the BIOS because I get the same boot sequence each time. fn+b, fn+r, fn+esc, win+b, win+r, win+esc, or the right arrow key (like one suggested) seems to make no difference to this, niether dose holding the power button for any length of time, after a few secs of pressing the power button the laptop just switches off again, like a hard reset.Threads I?ve looked at and tried;https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-U-and-S-Series-Notebooks/S205-Issues-with-Bios-Recovery/m-p/5231...https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-U-and-S-Series-Notebooks/LENOVO-BIOS-RECOVERY/m-p/332989#M11737http://askubuntu.com/questions/549193/black-screen-restarts-after-upgrade-to-14-10I... Hi, So I have an old ENVY 15-3000 that I was performing a BIOS update on a few days ago. The SSD in it isn't the factory original OEM one so there isn't an HP_TOOLS partition. So after the update ran inside Windows, it rebooted and is now in a bricked state. The caps lock light is flashing, and the airplane mode key is solid orange. Following HPs instructions on how to make a BIOS recovery USB stick, I have found that the installer files HP provides for this model are outdated and do not have the capability to make a recovery USB drive. Is there anything I can do about this or is it just bricked for good? Thanks,Rashed.

I have recently updated My laptop (HP Probook 450 G3 Notebook) and after first restart, the machine shows HP logo and then (Powe Led Switch off) and restarts, earlier version was 1.05 which from the upgrade switched to 1.05. I have tried combination keys method windows key+ B button, also made a recovery Flash drive from the latest BIOS, but no luck.

I also tried to find out the version installed in the machine which was 1.05 which may have helped, but on HP site there is only 1.10 version available.

Simpy put I went to update the bios on my notebook as I have previously without incident.  Well this time the update downloaded, installed and powered down Windows Vista 64bit SP1.  After that nothing! The power lights come on but that is it.  No HP Screen, No MSFT Screen no nothing.  I honestly think this is a bios update caused by HP's own update. This is the update I installed: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-67379-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&...   Long story short HP online chat support was very helpful and will be sending me a prepaid next day air box to ship at their expense to fix this problem.  Any comments are welcome but I strongly recommend anyone with this notebook not install this update!!! I already took out the battery, unseated the ram and the like with no results.  I sure hope they can fix this.

A:DV4-1120us bricked by HP's own Bios update

lordvader311, several of us already bricked our dv4s with HP latest bios update but you can fix it yourself in just a few minutes as followsBTW, the credit for this goes to PONGSTER who told us all about it.....  Edit Note: I've edited the steps for dv4-1140GO users. By the way, the 1125nr, 1140go and the CQ45 seem to share the same board, as they use the exact same BIOS Flashing application.  This bodes well for all of you who need to get theire dv4 fixed, instead of sending it in for repairs.  Remember, if you messed up your BIOS, sending it in for repairs is not the only solution, as I found out, after researching on all possible solutions.  Follow these steps before sending anything in for repairs  I have a dv4-1125nr.  I'm not sure this will help, but you may as well try it out before sending yours in for repair.  I fixed my messed BIOS update by following the exact steps I'm going to outline here.  There is hope, and you don't need to have your Motherboard replaced.  Simply follow the instructions and you should be typing on your dv4 again in no time.  It took me about 10 minutes, tops, to get all this done. Here we go: Okay... here are the exact steps I took to get my dv4 back in working condition after a failed BIOS update using HP's buggy update (I just had to repeat what we all already know... ) I have merely cut and paste 0.0's steps, so all credit goes to him and the genius over at the Acer sect... Earlier today I downloaded BIOS_Acer_1.11_A_A.zip from Acer's web site and ran the TMBI0111.exe executable it contained. My laptop rebooted as expected and the flashing process ran to completion (100%).It rebooted again but remained stuck at the Acer boot logo (without the dancing dots). Now the laptop won't boot at all. If I switch the machine off, then on, the same thing happens: stuck at Acer boot logo. I cannot enter the setup utility (F2) either.Note that the machine still reboots when pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and the keyboard illumination command (Fn-F9) still works.Any idea?

Here is a method that worked to rescue a HDX18 laptop running an Insyde BIOS. Download the latest BIOS for this model.  ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp51501-52000/sp51618.exe Save it to the desk top and use 7-Zip to "Extract Files, when you open it you will find a file by the name of 3610F34.fd Rename that file to 3610.BIN (I used capitols) Grab a USB flash drive 2 GB or smaller and it should automatically be formatted with FAT32, when it's done copy and paste your newly named BIOS file on to the flash drive, safely eject the drive from your computer. (do not just pull it out from the USB port)  On my Bricked HDX18.   Remove the battery and adapter and hold down the power button for 30 seconds to do a hard reset.  Plug in the flash drive in one of the left USB ports, hold down the "Windows"+"B" key and while your holding it down plug in the adapter.   Boot up and the laptop should start to beep and read the flash drive, release the keys and when finished the laptop will shut down. Leave it sit for 3 minutes and boot to Windows.  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  This method did not work on my dv8, nor did it work here for mrtranmsb :  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-systems-and/Please-help-recovery-Bios-HP-DV4-1326TX/... Well I mistakenly decided to try updating the BIOS on the Stick 300 before I was going to try slapping x64 Windows 10 on there.....and it bricked spectacularly, using the EFI USB method.  Found these forums and I have the same behavior as others, blue light on for a bit, flash flash activity on attached usb memory stick, blue light off, and it repeats, zero HDMI output to the monitor at any point. I cannot find a way to ask Lenovo about a repair option.  I would like to talk or email someone about sending it in to be addressed for a certain price type of deal. It is out of warranty, which I find strange that the warranty is so short on this product, and that seems to make it about impossible to contact support. Anyone know of a way to get their attention to get replies?

All I wanted was to update the graphics drivers (ATI), but for some reason that required that the BIOS be updated to 2.04 or higher. SoI updated the BIOS to 2.26 using the windows utility, everything appeared to work correctly and it said time to reboot. When I rebooted the system, the POST screen came up and the fan went to full tilt and it just stayed like that. With a sinking feeling in my stomach, I sat and watched it for 10 min. but nothing happened. The system was completely unresponsive to any input, including the power button and I eventually pulled the plug and then the battery to shut it down. When I plugged it back in... nothing. Not even the AC power LED comes on when it's plugged in. If I press the power button, the CD drive initializes, the HD spins up, and after awhile it gets quite warm to the touch, so I guess the CPU is getting power although the fan isn't working which makes me nervous. Is there any hope? Should I spend the money to buy a USB floppy and try the boot-block recovery method (already tried a few times with a USB key and nothing happened) or should I just put that towards a new motherboard?

A:Z61m bricked by BIOS update

A floppy drive is necessary piece of equipment for anyone who plans on using Windows since you'll encounter issues which may require a floppy utility to solve. If you're fluent in removing the palm rest, it is worth disconnecting the battery to ensure BIOS is flushed and reatttempting normal boot before continuing recovery techniques, if you determine your BIOS is still truly smoked and if you haven't become completely disgusted with the Z6x, you can buy them preowned used from IBM.com for about $350 and just like buying a certified pre owned Lexus and it includes a seven day no questions asked "I just don't like its face" return warranty and a 90 day warranty just as good as the new systems warranty.  That warranty is upgradeable and it will include the latest BIOS and software updates including your latest video driver that got you into the mess.

A:Z820 Bricked Bios after Firmware update

Hi: If you run the BIOS file again (on another PC), the intruction page opens and you can try this...I'd burn the DOS based flash files on a CD, since the DVD drive may be looking for a CD to recover from, but according to the instructions below, you can use a USB flash drive (formatted in the FTA 32 files system, not NTFS). Just put the files inside the folder on the CD, not the folder. Fail-safe BootBlock Recovery ModeHP Workstations include 64 KB of write-protected boot block ROM that provides a way to recover from a failed update of the system BIOS ROM, for instance in the event of a power loss.  Fail-safe BootBlock Recovery Mode will detect that the BIOS is unusable and boot the workstation in a recovery mode and search the root folder of any FAT/FAT32 file system on any USB media source (hard drive, flash drive, etc.) for a compatible binary image. The binary (.bin) file in the DOS Flash folder should be copied to the root of the desired storage device, and the system powered on. Once the binary image is located, the BIOS recovery process will be attempted. The automatic recovery will continue until the BIOS is successfully updated or restored.

I've tried all the unplugging, button holding, remove the CMOS, etc. None of it has improved the situation. If Lenovo voids my warranty and I have to pay for a replacement, it's really gonna put a hurting on me. I guess we'll find out pretty soon. :/

I assume that usb recovery is broken or missing from EC firmware and since i deleted my recovery partition from my ssd drive i assume maybe EC is still looking for some files on the ssd? The firmware update proceeded as expected.  All programs were shut down.  Power plugged in.  Blue bar went all the way across.  It informed me that it would now reboot.  Screen went to shut-down type background and then black as it usually does when booting.  Then it doesn't boot.  Nothing on the screen.  Fan is runnning. Power light and amber light on the f12 key are on.  Left it sit that way for 10 minutes, just in case.  Won't respond to ctrl-alt-del or power button.  Had to hold down the power button to turn off.  Won't respond to any function keys held down during boot.

My sister asked me to update her laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-16N; Part number PSC0ME-01S00SEN) from Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) to Windows 8 (64-bit).
So I did.

Then I went to Toshiba's UK website to check if there were any drivers I needed to install for Windows 8. The only one was a BIOS update (to BIOS v1.70). I have no idea what the previous BIOS version number was.

So I run the update application within Windows 8. Phoenix Technologies WinPhlash starts and then halfway through the update, the whole thing freezes.

The trackpad wouldn't move the cursor or anything. I had no option but to unplug the laptop from the wall and remove the battery. The laptop is not under warranty.

Of course, now it won't turn on. It beeps once when I press the power button, but the system doesn't turn on. A couple of minutes later, it sounds one long beep then two short beeps. It then keeps repeating this "one long beep, two short beeps" sequence every couple of minutes.

I have Googled and read website after blog after forum post, but nothing works. The links to the software suggested on these websites/blogs/forums are usually dead, so I cannot try what they suggest.

The most common solution is the Phoenix Crisis Recovery Tool. I have managed to download v1.0.0.4 which is supposed to enable me to make a bootable USB key. The version of this tool that I have downloaded is meant to be for a Lenovo ThinkPad X200. I have the correct BIOS.rom for the Satelli... Read more

Hello everyone! I ama new user and i am coming up with this post as I couldn`t find any kind of solution for my problem.Recently I decided to do a reinstallation of my operating system, which also previously was Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The installation went as usual, and after finishing it I went on to install all the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, for my product. When getting close to installing almost all the drivers i`ve needed, i stumbled upon a new version of the BIOS amnd the drivers and sfotware recommended for my laptop, by the producer. So i proceeded to install the upgrade, restarted the computer when it prompted me to do so, but after the so-called restart the laptop did not boot up as usual. At first it was telling me to not do anything as the BIOS is being flashed and then it was telling me something about some sort of image processing, things that i did not understand at the time (i have never encountered anything like that). After that my screen turned black. I have not done anything for a few couple of minutes as i thought it was supposed to be like that, but then i just force shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. When trying to boot it all up again, the only thing i got was a black screen and nothing else. After doing a little bit of research it appears that, somehowm i`ve managed to corrupt the bios on my laptop or something, and nothing else would work at this point. I tried to remove the BIOS battery and the ram and then put them all back, trye... Read more

Finally gave into the Lenovo nagging and updated the BIOS on my E560 - big mistake. It went through and installed fine, no issues with failures, etc (well none that appeared on the screen). The laptop restarted fine, it went through and updated the BIOS, restarted one final time and ...... nothing. At present I have popped the battery and the power, reset the unit (press pwr button for 15sec etc), removed all peripherals, etc, etc, googled for similar happenings and so no matter what I have done, the laptop is as dead as a brick. I have the small red power light on but that's about it. Nothing appears on the screen (so can't see UEFI/BIOS), no fans start and about the only thing that does work is the DVD drive can be opened. It's a relatively new laptop (less than 12 months old so still under warranty) but as a word of caution to other E560 owners - DO NOT INSTALL THE LATEST BIOS UPDATE. Well no unless you want an expensive paper-weight for your desk.

When I look up your system on the support page I see quite a few updates, drivers and such that support windows 8.1 and 10.  If you are looking for a BIOS update or patch, those are usually OS neutral and are applied with either a BIOS utility or patcher that works in DOS mode and some can use a windows based utility.

Are you trying to use a BIOS update to fix an issue or just get the "latest and greatest" for your computer?  Mostly I would not recommend updating your BIOS unless it is absolutely neccessary to fix a troublesome issue or problem with hardware.

First of all I want to say that I am extremely disappointed with the experience I had with my Lenovo. After I bought it I found out that Lenovo, for some reason, disabled the Turbo Boost option of the CPU. I tried to fix it by entering the BIOS but the options there were limited, so I decided to update the BIOS. I downloaded the BIOS update for 64-bit windows(i am running windows 8 which is compatible with the said update utillity). I ran the .exe and followed all the instructions (did not shut-down restart or anything my computer). After installing it automatically restarted and a Lenovo logo prompted on the screen followed by ">>Start PXE over IPv6, Press [ESC] to EXIT..." after that "EFI Network 0 for IPv6(numbers and letters) boot failed". Then ">>Start PXE over IPv4" which failed and a blue box poped saying "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. Insert Recovery Media and Hit any ket then select boot manager to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media". Pressed ok and got me to Boot Manager screen. Boot option Menu had only EFI Network 0 for IPv6 and EFI Network 0 for IPv4". What should I do?Note that I tried to start up both with and without the ethernet cable in.

Just purchased a G50-30 with win 7 x64. Decided to update the BIOS A7CN40WWW_64 from Lenovo website. The notebook version was A7CN23WW. Upon reboot, after successful BIOS update, Win 7 booted with errors of Repair option or Normal boot up. Even re-installation of Win 7 will yield BSOD - ACPI non compliant.  Have changed BIOS settings defaults from UEFI to Legacy, it still does not work. This BIOS version is not stable. Please help / advise ? Can i request for the earlier version of BIOS ?

Hello! My wifi stoped working and I updated all drivers and it didn't work. Then for the last thing I've updated the bios from 9acn28ww to 9acn32ww from the site. It went OK, but now that I try to acess the setup I'm prompted by a system password I didn't set earlier, it was empty. It came with Windows 8 installed, but I was using Windows 7 with MBR partition and now I can't configure to Legacy and nothing... Is there any default password like "password" ? Thanks in advance!

I found this procedure on a lenovo forum. Give it a shot and see if it works for you. If not, it is not worth putting money into fixing this laptop.. New ones are pretty cheap and having a new mb installed in this one will cost more than a new laptop.

BTW the spelling errors are from the forum NOT mine.

Bios recovery procedure

How to Recover a bad or brick bios in lenovo laptops:

1.Download Phoenix Wincrisis then Click on the WINCRIS.exe and choose CREATE MINIDOS CRISIS DISK and press START to make: USB Flopy or usb flash memory.
When creating the boot Floppy or usb memory, select from Folder Options to view the hiden and system files and delete or rename the file config.sys if present.
2. Download your Bios file from lenovo.com if u dont have it, Rename your BIOS file to bios.wph and copy it to your: USB Floppy/usb memory.
3.Plug USB Floppy/usb memory into laptop and shotdown.
4. Hold down Fn+R keys and while holding press the power button.
5. Now you should hear the flopy drive working or usb blinking, hold the keys for a while.
6. Leave the computer for few min. and if the computer does not restart it self turn the power down.
7. if everything went OK the computer shold start normally.
Download Phoenix Wincrisis Links:

Hi! I updated my Lenovo T430u's BIOS from version 2.11 to 2.13 this morning and everything is slow since. I mean: sloooow. I had a functionnal dual boot Windows 10/Linux Mint but now Linux Mint takes around 3 minutes to boot. It took 25 seconds before. I figured it was related to the disk so I did the memory and disk diagnostics but everything seems ok. Even booting from USB/DVD is slow. I tried restoring default settings from BIOS, putting the battery in maintenance mode, removing the battery and even disconnecting the CMOS backup battery for an hour. I then tried to downgrade the BIOS but it does not seem like an option. This would probably fix my problem since everything was ok at version 2.11.I am really out of solution here! Please help, my computer is not usable in this state :/ Julien

It looks a lot like this problem:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T500-takes-15-minutes-to-boot-after-bios... The only thing is that I don't have an "Intel AMT" option to disable in the BIOS :/ Help!

tama41,

Hopefully you made a backup of your BIOS before you updated it, that way you can restore it back. If not, there are ways to fix it (crisis BIOS recovery) or you can contact Acer technical support in your area for options.

A:W540 Bios update failure and Lenovo warranty

Hi plorengo, welcome to the forums,

I would like to suggest that you contact support once more, and again request a fix under warranty, if on this occasion you also receive no satisfaction you should then simply state that you are not satisfied and wish to register a complaint, the CSR will be able to do this for you.

Please ensure that you note the name of the CSR you speak to and also request a call number, the call number will possibly be of help at a later date.

Please also see the following post from Mark_Lenovo;

Please give it another go yourself before contacting Mark and please let us know how you get on.

A while ago I posted the possibility of upgrgrading my 6GB Lenovo V570 to 16GB.  It seemed as if it would be ok, although contrary to what Lenovo stated, but I chickened out.  Instead I've been living with my unit opearting very slowly and having the desktop manager and shockwave flash frequently fail.  It's not wonderful dealing with this and I have been looking for answers.  I thought about adding another couple of GB and along the way found suggestions on updating the drivers and bios.  Anyone savvy enough to advise on what drivers being updated would improve and how to accomplish this?  Also how is the bios updated wihtout screwing everything up?  I'm also thinking of doing a factory resore after backing up all the info on the unit.  Woudl a fresh start help or should I just  save my money and buy a new windows 10 computer?  Thanks!
