Good computer, still can't run WoW.

Q: Good computer, still can't run WoW.

I bought a computer about 10 months ago, and it runs World of Warcraft terribly, even though there is no reason why. It has a 2.80 GHz Intel Pentium D processor (two cores), 1gig of RAM, 225 gig hard drive with 81% free space, and I run Windows XP Media Center Edition. This exceeds the game requirements. I also recently bought a new graphics card and power supply to go along with it. It is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. Me and one other computer share the internet, so I even bought a new router. This helped ever so slightly, but not a noticeable difference. The video card made the game bearable to play, but wasn't an immense improvement from the integrated card. With all this, my computer still runs World of Warcraft terribly. The other computer in my house is a few years older than mine, has a slower processor (but it's an AMD), an older video card, but yet it still runs World of Warcraft beautifully, and way better than mine. Both the computers are Compaq. I am sure it's not any virus or spyware slowing it down, because my computer was like this the day I bought it. Could it be a hardware flaw? Or that maybe Intel isn't the best for gaming? Or could it be that the media center edition of XP isn't very good? Or a combination of these things? I am at a loss, I am spending money on improvements that don't seem to help, and it is frustrating to try and do something I enjoy and not be able to do it. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

Preferred Solution: Good computer, still can't run WoW.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
I am new to the forum, but not new to computing. I recently started having problems with this Vista Home Premium box not being able to resolve DNS names for only computers on my home network (all others XP boxes or Windows Server 2003). It can ping the IP addresses of the local boxes. It doesn't have a problem connecting to the internet. But this is a big problem when it comes to sharing files within my local network.

I have disabled Windows Firewall and McAfee Firewall and Services to try and diagnose the problem.

I have been googling this for a couple of days looking for ideas, but I have none. I have validated that DNS is running. NETBios over DHCP is enabled. Subnet mask is 255.255.255. DHCP and DNS server IP is correct.

Anything that anyone could point me to try? I am out of ideas.

A:Ping on Workgroup Computer Names Bad / IP Addresses Good / Internet Good

Unless you've got a DNS server running at home, it's rather unlikely that DNS is being used to resolve names of your home computers when pinging by name. Instead, the machine does a broadcast (on the local segment) to the effect of "if you're called XYZ, please get back to me and tell me your IP address".

If that's not working for you, my first inclination would be to suspect firewalls on the other machines - not necessarily on the machine exhibiting symptoms. Try disabling and even uninstalling (3rd-party) firewalls while you're troubleshooting, and also test what happens when all machines are booted to [safe mode + net].

Hey,

I have about a 5 year old computer i will tell you the specs.

MSI (VIA) MS-6309 v2.0 - Motherboard
512MB PC133 SDRAM
850Mhz Intel Celeron - now overclocked to 1Ghz
40GB Western Digital 5400rpm HDD(now slave) - now with a second 7200 40GB as master
it came with a (tornado?) video card but i now upgraded to a NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 which is a 256MB AGP 8x card.

I got it because it was at a VERY good price and it out of the packet but my friend builds computers and he got the wrong gfx card so he sold this one to me cheap... my computer is an AGP 4x. I understand i cant upgrade that unless i get a new motherboard. I have drivers that microsoft installed by itself (Nvidia GeForce FX5200 Microsoft Corporation) is it worth going to the nvidia website and upgrading to their drivers? my computer is really old and slow and i want to get the best performance out of this card... I dont think i can run games like Need For Speed Underground 2 can i? because i have a slow processor? i tried to play Halo Trial downloaded from microsoft but it went to the loading screen at the start but then just shut down before it got to the menu.

My point is... what can i do to get maximum performance out of this card but without increasing the startup items too much etc

Thankyou

Hey Guys. I've been looking around to make myself a custom computer. I was wondering if you guys could say if this computer is good for my use. I do some basic gaming (Minecraft and Runescape), Average Video Editing (Sony Vegas), Very Basic Photo Editing (GIMP), I also want to always have open Firefox, TweetDeck, and Windows Live Messenger so is my RAM enough?

Specs of Computer:

Powerup ATX Mid-Tower Case
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E6500 Processor
Kingston HyperX blu 4GB DDR3 Desktop Memory
Western Digital 500GB Caviar Blue Hard Drive
Galaxy GeForce GT 430 Video Card - 1024MB GDDR3, PCI-Express 2.0, DVI, HDMI, VGA DirectX 11
1 Built in Case Fan
Coolmax CMF-1225-BL 120mm UV LED Cooling Case Fan - Blue
Vantec Spectrum PCI Fan Card with Blue UV LED
450 Watt Power Supply (Is the power supply enough?)

Also another question is my cooling cooling fans enough for my Computer to use and will a Stock CPU Fan be good enough as well? Please leave details!

Edit - I've heard the Intel Pentium is old how is that? I've gone into Best Buy and most Laptops and Desktops have the Pentium E Series I do know that the Pentium D Series is dinosaur old but is the Pentium E too? and if so why is Best Buy still using them?

A:Is this computer good for my use?

Hello there, for what you want to use it, i think it's ok.

Take a look at my system specs. i have a E6500 with 4GB DDR2 800 and a 8400GS (a.k.a. the worst dedicated video card ever) and i happen to like it, despites the video card (which i'll be upgrading it someday soon)

450W for that PC is just fine. how much is the PC worth?

I have the OEM cooler and under 100% load it stays at 57?C, idle temps about 37?C, because i live in the caribbean so the regular temps here are between 25 - 35?C.

If you're not an enthusiast, that'll be more than enough

Cheers.

Hey, how does this sound for a reasonably cheap computer that will perform well for games? heres the setup: 1 nvidia 6800 gt 256 mb, 1 AMD 64 athalon 4000+ processor, 1 1gig stick of low latency RAM, and i havent decided on what case or what cooling or my mother board, and i was hoping that someone could help me figure out what case and cooling and mother board i should get, and if this is a good setup to perform well for games.

A:New computer, is this a good set up?

"reasonably cheap"
Ok, I guess that depends on your budget, I'd call that expensive, the 4000+ is more money than I'd spend on a cpu.

If it was me, (which it's not), I'd get a 3000+ or 3200+ cpu and overclock it(even if it doesn't oc, it still is a decent cpu), and use the money I saved from not getting a 4000+ to get a 7800gtx graphics card.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130234
So you take your 6800gt's price and add it to the money you'd save by going from 4000+ to a 3000+, and you'd have enough to get a 7800gtx.

Yeah, that'd be a good setup for games.

If you get a retail cpu, you wouldn't need any cpu cooling, and a decent case should come with a few fans.

I have the Chaintech vnf4ultra motherboard, I like it for a budget board.
People seem to like the dfi ultra d ut 939 motherboard, but it can be picky about ram.

Did you want a sli capable board?

Which is the cheapest computer(laptop or desktop)with the following specifications:
Operating System: Windows 7
Processer: at least Intel Core i3
RAM: at least 2 GB
Video card: at least 1 GB(better if DirectX 11 supporting but not too expensive)
HDD: around 160 GB to 220 GB

A:A good new computer

There is no best answer.
prices vary from week to week I would start looking online on the major sites for a special on a unit with the specs you want.
Next go to the website of the mfg..see if the drivers are available..then roam some of their other models to see if they have updated drivers for other models regarding bug fixes etc....if support isnt good thats a major strike...then research that model a little for any know issues. ..also see what a new keyboard costs if its a laptop...if its one of the that goes for 100 bucks...I am not buying the unit....as they may want 100 for a fan as well.

512 mb infineon RAM (2 sticks of 256mb)

ATI Raedon 9200 128mb Graphics card

-dvd/cd rw drive

DVD Drive-

A:would this be a good computer?

it all sounds good as long as all your parts are compatible. you might want to check to see the maximum power usage on all of your components and make sure that a 400 watt power supply will be enough. also i do recomend that you get alteast a gig of sdram in that baby just to compliment your cpu and give you ease with running applications. now adays 512 just isn't what it used to be. and if you are just starting out in the pc world you should definetly have a 3.5 floppy drive, you'll need it for fdsik and making bootdisks and stuff. they will save your life someday. what is the speed of your cd/dvd rw drive(s)?

Storage: 465GB Western Digital WDC WD5000AAKX-001CA0 ATA Device (SATA) (41 temperature!)
Optical Drives: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-222BB ATA Device
Audio: High Definition Audio Device

Is this a good and fast computer and does it still healthy? Also in speccy SMART hard drive status is warning so my friend was worried that hard drive will fail does this will happen in short time?

A:Is this a good computer

SMART can be warning of problems, would be time to get all the data your friend has created or that exists nowhere else backed up to other media then get a new drive.

As far as the computer goes it looks fine, certainly something I would use. I recycle computers that have come into my possession and frequently give them to folks in need. The 4GB RAM is good for most uses but Windows always likes more.

I am looking to buy a new computer. I don't have alot of money at this point and due to prior financial difficulties, I'm having trouble getting approved for financing. Does anyone know anything about MDG in Canada? I' ve heard good and bad, so I'm looking for any info or stories anyone might have about their dealings with this company. If it turns out that they are not going to be an option, then I will have to wait a few more months to save up for something else, but I'm really in a hurry, because having no computer at home is not making me or the kids happy. Thanks in advance for any help!

My Dad is looking for a new Desktop computer and I'm trying to help him the best I can with making a decision on what to get. Here's what he wants, he wants one with a Flat Panel, CD RW/R, DVD Drive, Floppy Drive, 512 MB DDR SDRAM, 80 GB Hard Drive and Microsoft Word. He's going to use it for Word Processing, Internet, E-mail, Watching DVD's, and playing CD's. Any recommended brands? Is Compaq any good? We were considering at HP Pavilion but he thinks its too expensive. Is Dell good or not? Any help would be appreciated! The Sales Clerk said that Emachines is now better than what it was several years ago, don't know if its true or not, do you agree? He said HP was good and so was Emachines. I tried to help him as much as I could but I only know so much about computers, brands I'm not so familiar with what is good and what isn't. Thanks for the help!

My sister recently bought a used computer from a friend. She's been having a lot of problems with it since she bought it. Like crashing, starting in safe mode, it gets hung up, takes a really long time to boot, won't shut down properly. (She's not very good at describing the errors, so I don't have much specific info to share here). She took it in to the repair shop once (and they said it seemed fine - I believe they replaced the power pack), but now it's acting up again and she doesn't want to spend the money on the repair shop again. Her question is whether to fix this one or buy a new computer. I am going to run some tests and try to figure out if the machine is worth keeping. I have some experience in this area, but not extensive by any means. Any suggestions on what to check/tests to run to see if a computer is basically solid and worth spending money to fix? (The operating system is Windows 98. I've thought about upgrading her to Windows 2000 thinking that might help).

I appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks!

Hello. I recently purchased the laptop I had previously been renting from my school. I am not ready to purchase an antivirus yet, so I have been looking around and testing what the free ones are like. I downloaded AVG Internet Security for the free trial which will soon end. I really like this antivirus, so I am wondering if AVG Free is a good one as well? Obviously it won't be as good as the one you pay for, but will it still keep my computer safe? I also have Malwarebytes for my malware removal and the free trial will be done as well. Are there any good malware removal programs that are free and not just a limited-time free trial? Also, once I have removed Malware from my computer, is it necessary/recommended to have both an antivirus and a malware removal program? Thanks for your help.

A:Looking for good computer protection

I use Avira for antivirus and Comodo for firewall... and am very secure. I use NoScript and Flashblock also.

I never get infected unless I install bad software on my machine after ignoring warnings/ or just being bad when I know it. (piracy is illegal)

Different people prefer different programs, but I've found these work together.

I'm looking for getting a gaming desktop computer for under $650.
Buying computer from Best buy you are stuck with brand name computer like Acer or Gateway being very cheap computers and low budget computers or HP or Asus being better and more costly computers.

CyberPowerPC and iBUYPOWER Gamerner PC both are over price and not reliable computer and lots and of lots hardware problems from what I read and really outdated spects for it's price.
Well build computer kits are good, but you have to put it together and you get no software and windows 8 does not come with it.
Some games will be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim ,Dark Souls,Witcher 2,Dragon Age II,Divinity II ,Diablo ,Mass Effect 3,Far Cry 2,Risen,Fallout,Grand Theft Auto and Doom so on.

The budget no more than $650.

All right, so I'm here and I think I'm infected with something. It might be more than one thing, it might be big or small. Well my problems are my 1. computer will not stop shutting down at random times. The only time it shuts down not randomly is when I'm running a scan with any antivirus or spyware program other than Avast. Then I know that it will shut down in the middle of the scan. 2. Computer runs kind of slow. I know this is a basic problem, but I think its running slow due to unconventional means. 3. Internet will not stay connected. I'm kind of hoping its the virus's fault and I won't have to call my provider because it works everywhere else in the house. 4. The one that I hope will bring it all together as one problem. There are these viruses that won't go away permanently. I guess about a week ago I got infected with Outerinfo and then un-installed it. It came back later and I ran Avast and it got rid of some viruses, but not all of them. I used a program called Vundofix V 6.5.1 and it found C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtq.dll, C:\WINDOWS\system32\qtvwa.bak1 , C:WINDOWS\system32\qtvwa.ini. There are a lot more it finds but that is my most recent scan. Along with this Spybot Search and Destroy finds a problem with Network Monitor in the system and registry key and I can't get rid of it if I'm supposed to. So I was hoping that someone could help me with this problem. I wasn't sure what type of problem this was so I also posting this ... Read more

A:Is this a good price for this computer?

I don't think so, but it should run COD4 in med/Hi details in 1024x768 just fine.

1 - Both tthe included "420watt" and 500watt PSUs (I don't think anyone actually gets those 420s) are junk brand. Antec, Coolermaster, Thermaltake make some decent low-end 500watt units for $50 or so. Best ones are $80~110 : Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power & Cooling, OCZ.

2 - Rather OLD OLD motherboard. Limited to AM2 CPUs. Being that its a budget system, its a bit expensive board - in which 1% of users actually upgrade to 2 cards.

3 - when listing items, please remove "NONE" items are they don't apply.

4 - PMPO speakers? Sound like $10 speakers. A good set of $40 20watt speakers from a better company will sound a lot better. Get this for $50, these look great, sound great.. and about the best on the market for the price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836113016 (PS some people complain, but many speakers BUZ when the cell phone is getting a call - also, Subwoofers belong on THE FLOOR)

But here are some choices for under $50 (note these REAL speakers are 6~30 watts - and a quick google search says those 600watt in your list ARE $10) http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010370060 4025&bop=And&Order=RATING

3 - a company that sells junk cases, junky PSUs and junky speakers are not to be trusted. "Major brand powered by Nvidia"?? pretty much any maker of video cards are KNOWN.

A:Good Gaming Computer

Welcome to TSG,

What is your actual budget and what games do you wish to play? What kind of settings do you wish to play those at? Low, medium, high, ultra/max? What monitor will you be using with it?

The first link goes to a computer that most people wouldn't consider a gaming since it has a pretty low end Radeon HD 6450 that simply can't handle most modern games.

The second link goes to a website that lists several PC's.
