Error Message on opening program file: 'overflow while accessing registry or .cfg file'

Q: Error Message on opening program file: 'overflow while accessing registry or .cfg file'

I have been using Sage WinForecast V4.03 for several years and it worked fine on Windows 7 and until 4 days ago on Windows 10. Now when I try to load the program I get the message
'overflow while accessing registry or .cfg file'.

I have tried a clean reinstall of the software and also reinstalled form backups and no change. I also tried a previous version of the software and that worked (but would not read my later version files :-/) and also cleaning/defragging the registry.

I have tried searching the web but cannot find any reference to this issue.
Thank you for your help in resolving this.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I use a program that gives me book values of used boats, I am sent a new disc every 3 months that updates the values. It was working fine until a popup showed when trying to access, that reads " error accessing INI file : overflow " , the program will not load because of this problem. I am using, Vista home premium with service pack 2. Please help. Diamondmark

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

I got this error message on start up of my one week old Dell P4 today:

It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory

At this point I could do nothing else but turn the machine off. I turned it back on and it reverted to an old set up and booted fine.

When I attempt to open an Excel file using Excel 2003, the following error message occurs:

"this file is not in a recognizable format" etc...

Why does this occur, and how can I open the file successfully?

A:Solved: Excel 2003 - error message when opening file

Check the file extension. Am sure it has an extension ".xlsx" which means that the file was created using microsoft office 2007 excel or higher. This is why your computer does not recognize the extension of the file. the 2003 version of excel can only open files with the extension ".xls". The solution to this is to get microsoft office 2007 or higher version and install it or got the following link and download Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack and install it. it will enable you to open the file without having to install the office 2007 which may not be fit for your machine specifications.

Chances are the hard drive is failing - remove the drive from the system. mount it into a 2.5" external USB case, and attach it to a working system by USB to recover your data.
Then reinstall the drive and run a full diagnostic on it (F12 at powerup). if the drive fails the diagnostic, replace it with a new one (post the full model information if you need a part reference - i.e., Inspiron n5110, 5521, etc.).
Windows 10 can be downloaded from Microsoft. Earlier OS recovery material cannot -- you'll need to contact Dell to purchase recovery media.

One of my users is having this issue. She is is using Windows 7 Pro x64 bit with Internet Explorer 11. Everytime she tries to access a specific website IE stops working and gives the following error message:

However, before registering. I checked on-line and Tech Guy advice seemed to be avoid at all costs.
So, I'm left with two problems viz repairing my system, if it needs it, and opening the .eml file.

I run a registry program called Registrar Registry Manager to help me manually clean uninstall registry entries. It was working fine until I fooled around with a new tweak program. I think deleted something related to opening it.

Right now, when I click on the Registry Manager icon, I get an error message that says in the title bar "Registrar Registry manager: rr.exe - Unable To Locate Component", and below that it says "This application has failed to start because OLEACC.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"

After that though, the program does open just fine, but I get that error message consistantly every time I want to open it.

I did try reinstalling the program over the original, but that did not help. Then I uninstalled the program, then reinstalled it, but I still get the same error message.

I should mention that I run Vista Basic x64 and this program runs in the x64 Program Files.

Have any idea how to fix this?

Jan LaFata

A:Registry program error message

I don't know if I would agree to anything in that last post. Looking at google, RR.EXE is just your Registrar Registry program. Many of the people here don't agree with the use of any reg cleaners.

I guess I would first run a search on your computer and look for OLEACC.dll. If it doens't find it, then it's indeed missing. If it does find it, then you may have to replace it, because it's not working right if programs are asking for it. Either look online and try to download it, or copy one from another computer.

or maybe a policy, .. start > run > type gpedit.msc and press enter.
expand User Configuration > Administrative Templates >System .. u'll find "Disable registry editing tools" .. if it's enabled, then it's active. u can change it to disabled.

First and foremost about this, have you scanned your computer for Any sort of malware before / after doing this download as it may be infected, Just a thought

Secondly, what type of program are you trying to download, if its a simple program such as an AV , or a free game or something like that, from a trusted site, it should not be giving you an error such as that

if its an older exe file maybe it just won't work with your xp, Just a couple of thoughts to toss out there

When I open a file with an unrecognized extension:

- If I uncheck the checkbox the first time, then the second time it asks me to select a program, but there is no checkbox to set the program association - it's automatically set for me

So I have 2 questions

1. Can this behavior be overridden so that I get the checkbox every time I open the file?
2. How can I wipe/delete/clear out the unwanted association that Windows set for me the second time?

Pro Way:

After having a few problems with the PC(I run Vista), my sister introduced me to "Free Window Registry Repair" (http://download.cnet.com/Free-Window-Registry-Repair/3000-2086_4-10606555.html) which I ran. Doing a couple other things like upgrading IE7 to IE9 have the computer running like a champ. I noticed afterwards, that my defaults on music and video files had changed to Nero . For example, video files were opening up in Nero Showtime instead of Windows Media Player. I went back to the files and changed back to the defaults that I wanted. Today, just for the heck of it, I ran the registry cleaner and all the defaults were again changed. I don't plan on running the registry cleaner frequently, but should I expect that if I do, defaults will continue to switch to other programs? Is there a way to fix this by going into the Nero menu? Thank You

A:Registry Repair Program Changes File Associations

I would recommend setting things back to the way you want them and then uninstalling the registry cleaner. It's not recommended to use these types of programs as they often remove things that are needed. Please read this article written by a distinguished colleague of mine in the malware removal community, miekiemoes, which explains it very well:

These types of programs do not significantly improve performance, if at all and shouldn't be needed on a well-maintained computer. Be sure to defragment the computer and remove unused programs/temp files and temporary Internet files regularly to ensure optimal performance.

Hello all & Happy New Year
I would like to eliminate this annoying error message "another program is currently using this file" that pops up when I try to open some programs. One of which is Act 2000 a database program, this particular program also doesn't shut down properly. I also get this error message occaisionally when I open these programs - Calyx Point & Mozilla Firefox, however with these it is not every time as with Act.

I've used ACT and have experienced it's bugginess first hand. Can't really help you with your problem, but did want to let you know you are not alone and also ACT doesn't give much (free) Tech Support. However, they do have some FAQ's on their web-site, so it might be worthwhile to try there.

A:"file does not have a program associated with it" error message

Hi zoel_222 and welcome to TSF.

Firstly we need to fix your ability to reassociate file types for programs. Please follow this link for File Association Fixes for Windows 7. You will want the EXE one.

To fix the association for a particular file type:

1. Download the corresponding fix from the above table. (Use Right-click – Save as option in your browser to download the fixes.)

2. Unzip the file and extract the .REG file to Desktop.

3. Right-click the REG file and choose Merge. Alternately, you can open the Registry Editor and then using the Import option from the File menu, to merge the REG file contents.

Note that you need to be an administrator to apply these fixes.

Then, you will need to start a new thread in the ' Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help' section and give then all the details they require to help you.

We have a Windows XP (Service Pack 2) that sorts the files according to date (rather than name as usually), when the user is in the Open File dialogue of any program (Adobe Creative Suite products, Microsoft Office programs etc.). The user can re-sort the files by clicking the sorting buttons in the dialogue window, but doing so every time we open a file feels a bit boring.

In Windows Explorer the folders are sorted aplhabetically, so the explanation cannot be that it fetches the sorting priority from the settings of Windows Explorer.

Any ideas how to fix the problem?

I'm moving from an XP machine to a Windows 7 machine and have transferred my project files (engraving files as well as .bmp). When I try to open a project folder in any of the programs I use it takes 2-3 minutes for it to load all the files.

There are just over 10,000 files in the folder, they are all small files (nothing larger than 100k), and on the XP machine it loads in an instant.

I have done everything I can find online (turned off indexing, changed the folder prefs, etc) and nothing works. When I open the folder within Windows it loads in an instant, however when I try to open it within a program is when it drags.

Does anybody have any ideas of what else I can try outside of threatening the computer with physical violence?

Also as you can tell by my screen name I'm a mac user that has to use PCs at work. Please keep that in mind when offering suggestions as I am relatively lost on this machine.

Thank you all!

Hi there,

I'm looking to create a script that will change the default program for opening PDFs. Is there a way to do this from the command line or via the registry?

An example would be great!
If all else fails I've created a GPO to do this, but a script would be ideal.
Thanks all,

A:Change Default Program for file - Command line or Registry

We can achieve it through command line.
Please follow the steps.

Open an elevated command promote.
Use FTYPE {fileType}={commandString} to creat a file type and associated command to open the file.
Use ASSOC {.fileExtension}={fileType}

For example:
assoc .txt=txtfile
ftype txtfile=c:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe "%1"

Its saying all your files are decrypted using Cryptography and for decryption is asking for ransom. It happened on 5th June 2014, But I could not notice the corruption till today. In all folder I find 3 files with text -------------------What happened to your files ?All of your files were protected by a strong encryption with RSA-2048 using CryptoWall.More information about the encryption keys using RSA-2048 can be found here: hxxp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSA_(cryptosystemWhat does this mean ?This means that the structure and data within your files have been irrevocably changed, you will not be able to work with them, read them or see them,it is the same thing as losing them forever, but with our help, you can restore them. How did this happen ?Especially for you, on our server was generated the secret key pair RSA-2048 - public and private. All your files were encrypted with the public key, which has been transferred to your computer via the Internet.Decrypting of your files is only possible with the help of the private key and decrypt program, which is on our secret server. What do I do ?Alas, if you do not take the necessary measures for the specified time then the conditions for obtaining the private key will be changed. If you really value your data, then we suggest you do not waste valuable time searching for other solutions because ... First off why would you attach the infected file?
At this time there is no way to decrypt files that have been encrypted with these types of viruses unless you want to pay the ransom

We bought a new Dell XPS 8500. We connected it to our file server which we are using a file server with Windows 2003 Server.

I am using a program called Strucad V15.5.

Basically, it is a 3-D modelling program. The model is stored on the server. If we store the model on the local machine the program and model opens up in about 2 secs if that.

If I open a model folder stored on the server, the program freezes at about 50% open every time.

I turned the network card down to 5 meg half duplex and I got the model to open up but it takes 3-4 minutes.

Can anyone suggest something or know how to fix this?

Thanks in Advance!!!

in Windows-8 when i try to delete folder i got the message:
"The action cant be completed because the folder or file in it is open in another program"
i check and close all program, i dont see it in the task-manager
(if i reset the computer, and try again it will delete it)
another problem in Windows-8, when i copy, or delete folder - i cant see the action until i press F5 for refresh
how i can fix those problems ?

A:got message 'file is open in another program'

For your first problem, look no further than Unlocker. Goodle it, download and install, it will release any system locks on the file so that you can move or delete it.

As for deleted folders still being visible until F5... I've not heard of that happening before, no suggestions sorry.

Hi there
this usually happens because a system or background service is running -- usually the culprit is something like Adobe updater or any of those little programs that might be running when you look at the tray on the right hand bottom of your screen --where the arrow is -- not quite to the complete right corner or you'll get the charms bar.

Go into control panel and look at SERVICES -- disable or stop the ones that are using your program. (This is different from the APPLICATIONS as the problem sounds like it's a background service which is using the file(s) you want to delete not an APPLICATION.

You'll need also to look at the task manager to see whats actually running - both applications and services.

If you can't figure it out take these 3 screenshots and maybe it should be clear what to stop.

1) Running services
2) running applications
3) name of program or file you want to delete.

How can I work around the following rror message "cannot copy file. cannot read source file or disk". I'm using Windows XP on a Gateway GT 4016

A:error message "cannot copy file. cannot read source file or disk"

Get a new disk or provide a whole lot more details about what you're trying to do and what program(s) you are trying to do "it" with.
