How to change Windows XP Product key and Product ID.

Q: How to change Windows XP Product key and Product ID.

I will not question whether this is legal or illegal. This comes from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q328874

For non-corporate users there is this from my own experience: I have on occasion run into three or four customers who attempted what is known as casual piracy by installing his XP onto a second machine. I have had to get only one customer out of this mess (about two years ago or longer) but the workaround was easy. (By the time his grace period was up, he had installed many programs and didn't want to be forced to do it again.) We called Microsoft, gave them a credit card number and they worked us through some steps that fixed the problem.

We then rebooted and was asked for a valid key.

I do not remember the steps as it was quite some time back and I saw no reason to keep notes on it.

Microsoft asked no questions about why he attempted piracy. I think they are just happy to get the money.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Has Microsoft changed something in the latest April Windows Updates?
I create a default Windows 8 Enterprise VL image on my laptop in audit mode as I have always done previously.  Nothing has changed from my side.
When I install the image via WDS, everything installs fine.
When I use my WIM file to install via USB, it now comes up with:
The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key.
right after selecting the install language.
I have checked EI.cfg and it is normal:
[EditionID]
Enterprise
[Channel]
Volume
[VL]
1
I then tried adding PID.TXT with my Enterprise KMS key and, rather than error it then prompts me for a product key.
Surely using the VL install media it should never ask for a product key.  It never has before. (And I've never had to before)
I prepped the image as normal using:
C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:C:\Windows\win8unattend.xml
Any ideas?  I can't but help thinking something has changed in the latest batch of Windows Updates.  It's quite frustrating as not all my machines are capable of PXE, so I have to use USB.
The reason I think it is a recent change, is if I do a default install and DO NOT do any Windows Updates, it all works fine.  Only when I install the latest WU does it start doing this.

A:[NEW] The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key.

OK, So I've fixed it now, but I will still like to know WHY this has changed.

If i do this to my WIM, it then installs from USB:

imagex /flags "Enterprise" /info c:\temp\WIM\ME\install.wim "Win8Office2013Enterprise-x86" "Win8Office2013Enterprise-x86"

I wonder because I use the WDS capture image if this has somehow changed recently.
Very annoying, but now at least I can install my custom image :)

So short story, I work at a college tech site that fixes student and faculty computers. A foreign exchange student from Japan with a Sony Vaio (most likely from Japan as well) managed to get a virus on his computer and he was blocked off our network. Our policy is that we wipe and reinstall the OS to ensure that the virus is gone. However, we didn't have any Windows 7 Home Prem media CDs so I downloaded a Win7 Home Prem 32bit iso off of MSDN and burnt it to disk. However, when entering the product key given on the bottom of the laptop(and I've checked 3 times now to make sure it's correct), I get a:

"Product key does not match the current Windows SKU" error.

Why is this happening? Do I need a certain burnt iso (from Sony in Japan?) because of the laptop's foreign origins or is something else causing the problem here?

A:Product Key Does Not Match Current Windows SKU (Foreign product key?)

Yes, you need a Japanese iso, they have regional editions.

Hello,

Currently I have Win 7 Premium installed and validated (#Key1). However,
I have purchase another license (#Key2) for my upcoming PC (which may take a while).

Can I change my current installed Win7 key to #Key2 and see whether it is genuine, then change back to #Key1 (on the same machine) without being blacklisted or anything?

The concern is since it take a while for 2nd PC, better to have a piece of mind that my second purchase is genuine as well.

Thanks

I own a Pavilion x2 Notebook with a 64 Gig SSD.  It came with Windows 8.1 but it now runs Windows 10 - of course.  I have decided to upgrade the SSD to 256 Gig.  I have purchased the proper module (a Sandisk).  I recently contacted Windows support to enquire about the procedure for validating the OS once I make the hardware change.  I wasn't sure how it would work since my Pavilion x2 has the Product Key embedded in the BIOS.  Microsoft informed me that because I would be making a hardware change I would require a new Product Key (in other words my Notebook's existing Product Key would be "blocked").  I was able to retrieve the Product Key from my Pavilion x2 (the OEM and Installed keys - what's the difference??). Does anyone have any experience in this area?  Once I replace the SSD and perform a clean install of Windows 10, will the BIOS-embedded Product Key validate the OS or will it reject it?  Since I am NOT buying an HP SSD (with preloaded OS) and since my Pavilion x2 is now long out of warranty?  Will I really have to pay over a hundred dollars for a new Windows OS license? Thank you in advance for any advice/help. Francis

Hello, If your computer initially arrive with Windows 8 and if it was later upgrade to Windows 10 [note upgraded from 8 to 10, not clean installation of 10], then you no longer need product keys. Your computer's Win 10 lic is activated using new activation method called Digital Entitlement.  Digital entitlement will automatically activate your PC as long as hardware configuration is the same. I cannot comment on behalf of Microsoft but to my knowledge and what it used to be, SSD/HDD change is not usually considered huge change. I am not sure if Microsoft support understood you well, but SSD change is not considered huge change - it happens on daily bases and there are hundreds of people who replace faulty HDD/SSD with new ones and reinstall Windows. However, you may need to verify this with MS support. More info >> https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12440/windows-10-activation>> http://www.thewindowsclub.com/digital-entitlement-activation-methods-windows-10>> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO You can now download an ISO image from Microsoft web site [make sure you download the correct version/edition] , use it to reinstall Windows, do not enter any product keys and eventually it should activate itself without codes because it will detect the same product, same motherboard, same serial number, same hardware configure despite bigger SSD. There is a new feature in Windows 10 coming with the latest... I recently scrapped a old laptop, and kept the Windows 7 Pro produkt key. My desktop has a windows 7 home premium edt.

I wish to change to pro, but without reinstalling, and without losing the home premium. Is it possible to switch the pro and home edt. without reinstalling, or losing my home prem. key?

A:Change windows 7 product key WITHOUT reinstall [Home prem. -> Pro]

Is this the Win7 that came preinstalled on the laptop? If so then the license is not transferable.

If it's the desktop you want to upgrade to Pro, you can insert the Pro key into Anytime Upgrade to unlock the few extra expensive features in Pro that few consumers need. Windows Anytime Upgrade - How to - Windows 7 Forums. Otherwise it is the exact same OS.

Save a Win7 backup image externally both before and after the Upgrade so you have options to restore both later which will maintain their activation. Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

You cannot use an OEM Product Key on any computer but the one it came with. If the Pro Key you have came from the original computer's COA sticker, or from a KeyFinder, then it's OEM, and CANNOT be transferred to the mew machine.

I picked up this lenovo laptop and shortly after I got it the HDD went out. I replaced the HDD and Installed a full version of Windows XP SP2 then used the Win 7 upgrade disc I bought. I did a clean install of the Win 7 then I activated it at that time without any issues. Some time after that I started getting the message it wasn't a genuine copy. I rearmed the time period but I'm not able to activate the copy again with the PID. I get the message this product is for upgrade and not a clean install. I need to find out if I will be able to register this copy or if I will need to start over from scratch. I did try putting in another PID but it didn't activate with it. I haven't been able to change the PID back due to the message I am getting about the upgrade not clean install.

I appreciate any help I can get with this issue.

I have been reading posts on seven-/eight-/tenforums for years with pleasure and gratitude for all the solutions they provided. But my current issue is one of the strangest things I've encountered in all these years. Have been searching through a lot of posts but haven't found any similar issue (or solution for it) yet. So here it goes.

Symptom: the OEM product key in the registry of a Windows 7 Pro installation (laptop) does not correspond with the OEM product key in the laptop's BIOS.

Here's the situation in short. It concerns a laptop from a student friend of mine who asked me to upgrade her current Windows 7 Pro x64 OS to Windows 10. She couldn't tell me if the installation was the original OEM factory partition or if it (perhaps) could be a pirated version. Since I wasn't about to just upgrade to Windows 10 without checking the authenticity of the Windows 7 OS, I performed the regular checks: see if it was activated already by running the "Activate Windows" program (check), check under Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> System tab if the OS was already activated (check) and run Microsoft's online Validation Tool (check). Everything seems fine, the OS is activated and genuine.

Still, the COA sticker was missing. My friend didn't have any physical recovery media or other stuff with a license sticker on it. So I thought I'd check the product key stored in the BIOS and compare it with the product key in the registry. If they'd correspond, all would... Read more

I have 3 computers with Win XP SP2 on them. They were given to the local SPCA and they asked me to format them and set them up for them.

Problem is their Product ID and the one for the install disc is different. Where the install CD came from I do not know but they told me to change it to their license. The install went well, tried Keyfinder to change it, won't let me. I tried editing the registry and it won't open the activation window. I took the registry entries off of one of their other computer and merged it into the registry and then tried Keyfinder and even after getting a message the registry edit worked the ID I am trying to remove is still there so somewhere in the registry there must be a block keeping the product id from being changed even though the registry edit (merge) reportedly worked.

Anyone have any ideas how to find this block. BTW the copy of XP is activated but with the wrong product id, seems this activation was built into the install but the key is for the wrong company, wrong lic.

Hi,

I recently bought a new laptop with Win 7 on.

After registering my version of Win 7 l occassionally got an error with the product key i entered.

I phoned Microsoft who gave ma a new product key and told me to enter it when the error asked for it.

However the error has stopped!!

can l enter the new key manually? in the registry or something??

Many thanks

Geoff

If the error has stopped and Win7 is functioning correctly then I would not worry about changing the key. But tuck it away in a safe place should the need arise again.

Hi, I'm new.

Right now, I'm really worried. I just bought Windows 7 Ultimate from Ebay, installed it and everything works fine. I tried the Product Key that came with it, but it said on the computer that it was blocked. That's ok, since it said on the page that it wouldn't work.

So I went to a website called Windows 7 Key Sale,Cheap Windows 7 Serial Key,Windows 7 Product Key Store!. as it was the first thing in google. I bought the Windows 7 product key, and I should get it soon.#

Bad Move.

I didn't realise I had service pack 1... it came with the Discs... FML.

Is there any way I can delete service pack 1 before the disk gets here so it will actually work? Thanks so much if you can help.

Microsoft has said that these keys won't work with SP1 windows.

A:Windows 7 Product Key, and SP1 Product Key.

A product key number will activate the Windows 7 with or without SP1 installed.

However, that 2nd site is a pretty questionable website, and would have my suspicions if that product key number was legit or not as well.

Getting your Windows 7 from places like these is quite risky. They have a high risk of being fake, illegal, and loaded with a virus to top it off. It's always best to get your copy of Windows 7 from a more legit retailer, or directly from Microsoft.

I've bought almost new clone-built PC from a computer flea market show and it has win2000 and runs great with all the latest up-dates like sp4 and etc.

Anyway, i'm worried about the OS being a pirated version and would like to chg the product install code key number to mine because I bought it and know it's good. I hate to re-install just because of this cos this OS runs great and it really time consuming to re-install.......well, you know that!!

Is this possible.....???

Strange situation...Ordered 2 server machines for a client with 2 copies of W2K server OS. One copy of OS was backordered so I installed 1st copy of OS on both machines using the same product key. Now that the 2nd (legal) copy of the OS has arrived can I change the key on the already installed OS? Is there a app that can do it for me?

A:Change Product Key W2K Server

You could try the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder from here. It claims to find your product key, (which I've tested on w2k and it works) and has a option to change the key.

I have installed Windows 7 onto a couple of work PCs. Valid licenses by the way. Both PCs show that Windows is activated, but there is the option to change the Product Key. Does this mean that the licenses aren't fully validated if this option is available?

Thanks,
DN

Hi all,
I'm having trouble changing my product key.
Years ago, when I upgraded from 98 to XP pro, I'm ashamed to say, it was with a pirate copy of XPpro CD. However, I very soon saw the error of my ways and legalised my software online by purchasing a licence with which came a new product key. This was all done online and automatically.

Now, here's the thing. Due to an old and failing C drive, I have installed a new hard drive with the intention of transfering all of my files over to it before the old one gives up completely and I lose everything.
The problem is, although my existing OS and product key are completely legal, the only system CD I have is my old pirate one which will not load using the legal key.
I have loaded it using the old key with the intention of changing it afterwards but, having followed the process to change it, when I run Jelly Bean Keyfinder, it shows the old key.
I have also tried a microsoft windows verification and it confirms that it is not a legal licence.

The process I used to change the key was:
Change the OOBE Timer number in regedit,
Run c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a and run change product key, reboot and run c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a again which tells me that windows is already activated.

Is there any other way to change the key?
XPpro SP2

Any advice, apart from 'you shouldn't use illegal software you muppet', will be apreciated.

Kev
