Q: gmail redirects to unkown security cert "a248.e.akamai.net"

Hi,

If I click on "GMail" from google.com, it claims bad security certificate through "a248.e.akamai.net"...happens usually but not every time.

Also had similar problems with yahoo mail (doubleclick) and bank website (also doubleclick) in the past.

Computer is suddenly sluggish and freezing, requiring hard reboot approximately 3x per week (which is very unusual for my computer).

Could not finish GMER scan thrice due to a "report to windows" error during scan (sorry, I copied error info....but then brilliantly copied Over it before pasting) but it seems to have fully run the fourth time.

Please advise, DDS follows.

Thanks!

Mikela

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Lately, every time I boot up my computer, I'm getting a Security Alert on a certificate because "the name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site."

If I view the certificate, I can see it was issued by GTE CyberTrust Global Root to "a248.e.akamai.net".

I've done some poking around on the web, and I've found that Akamai is a company that does Internet caching and that it's not uncommon for internet requests to be rerouted through an Akamai server.

However, I'm not using a browser when this happens. It just pops up as soon as the computer is booting up. So I'm thinking that some program on my computer is trying to access the internet on boot-up (possibly to check for updates), and there's this bad certificate.

My question is: How do I find the program that is causing this certificate to appear? Maybe I can reinstall it, or tell it to stop looking for updates or something. This happens every time on boot-up. If I don't accept the certificate, it reappears the next time on boot. If I do accept it, it reappears next boot anyway. Kinda annoying.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I am led to believe that my network has been compromised. It all began last Dec- when I was out of town working . When I returned, after a month, my system was different, restore points were gone, and I had a MS network...

When I attempt to go to certain sites, and use https, I get a certificate warning, that a248.e.akamai.net is possibly presenting a false certificate- this happens in both MS7 and Firefox.

When I Google or Arin the above, I get nothing.

I attempted to report some occurrences to Google- I could not get to the form field to explain my concerns.

It appears to me, that I may have an embedded linux system, which I know little about.

There is much more, for sure.

Can someone do a who is through Arin on the above and post what they get? I would really appreciate it.

I am running 2 Dell 2400 Dimensions, on DSL, through a SMC7008ABR 8 port. I am not allowed to reformat the hard drives, believe it or not.

After fighting the system, disabling by removing Java, I was able to reinstall IE7- and recieved 85 updates- before that all these updates did not show in add remove programs, and said that I was current.

Today I downloaded Opera- it would not access the web.I was anticipating that would happen- and it did.

The only mail account I can access is G mail- I reinstalled T bird -reconfigured OE-to my local ISP accounts, and I cannot access either.

What a mess- my connection is great though, real fast as a matter of fact.

Can anyone give me some advise? Thanks-... Read more

I get this SSL error when I try to connect to facebook or pinterest sometimes;

This is probably not the site you are looking for!
You attempted to reach www.facebook.com, but instead you actually reached a server identifying itself as a248.e.akamai.net. This may be caused by a misconfiguration on the server or by something more serious. An attacker on your network could be trying to get you to visit a fake (and potentially harmful) version of www.facebook.com. You should not proceed.

If I restart my computer it will usually open up.

https://www.facebook.com/#!/ This is in my address box with the https crossed out.

Any suggestions as how to cure this problem.

I get this frequent facebook problem. I use https for FB. But from time to time Chrome says there's an SSL error, that the site is a248.e.akamai.net, not FB. I think FB uses akamai.net for caching pages?? . So, on my notebook I access FB with Chrome and it's OK. HOWEVER, the IP address on the desktop is 66.220.149.11 while the IP address on the notebook (for FB) is 69.171.229.11.

Now I understand akamai.net site is OK but why do both Chrome and IE show an SSL error and how can I get to FB via HTTPS after I proceed. If I do hit proceed I get to FB but only on HTTP.

In going through my Zone Alarm, I noticed the above, a248.e.akamai.net, there sitting in the "cookie" portion of
the program. Is this "snoopware" or something more
sinister, or nothing at all? Thanks in advance.

Have been on 2 sites in the past week that have stopped working when an error message came up, telling me that the site's certificate was invalid, that another site might be trying to impersonate the site I was on, etc., etc. One site I was on at the time was FB, and I could not get to the FB site until I reset my cookies. Today it happened again while on the members.directbuy.com site. I could no longer get to the site once this error message started coming up, and clearing cookies did not help this time. I checked your forum, and there in a closed thread I found info on the problem, which helped me end this error message (thank you!!!) Here's what it said to do (it worked!...I can now get back to the site I was on, and it's back to functioning normally!):

1. Click Start and select Control Panel .
(Windows XP Classic View - click on Windows Start button and
select Settings and Control Panel ).

A customer of mine sent pictures of their completed kitchen tile work and while attempting to save the pictures, I displayed the page info. At the bottom of the list of images I found this strange 'image'. Looks like an embedded link that is hiding in an image file. Has anyone seen this before and can tell me what it is. I don't know if my machine has been compromised.

Thanks.

This is the third time this has happened. Seems just when I try to go to Facebook.com (yeah, I know!). Chrome stops me with the warning and the IP address isn't that for facebook. On my laptop I get to Facebook ok and the IP address there is 69.171.223.13. BUT on the desktop (same router), the IP address is 24,143.201.211. Both use Win 7. Router is Linksys wrt310n.

Ron

Found another forum where this problem was noted; someone said that Linksys routers can get "dns poisoning" and that rebooting the router will solve the problem. It seems to have done just that.

I use Firefox exclusively as my browser. When I try to access my gmail, yahoo mail, hotmail, or any other site that will display a message stating, "you are about to be connected to a secure site, do you want to continue?" I get redirected to at&t website finder. This only happens in Firefox, but I don't have the problem in IE. I'm using Firefox 2.0, and IE7. This didn't happen until i uninstalled the at&t parental controls. I've spoken to at&t about this and they have no solution. I work for at&t myself, and I've been through my settings and I can't figure it out. I've been in the HiJack This section of the forum, and Ried sent me to this area for help with Firefox. All of this is on my PC. My wife's laptop, on the same network (secured), is working fine so I can access these forums.

If I try to connect to security websites (this site, the links listed in steps 2/3/4, AVG, Microsoft support) or update servers for security programs (Avast, Adaware) I receive a "connection failed" message in Firefox, and a search option in IE, but other websites work just fine.

Also, google & yahoo search results redirect to any number of ads.

Avast and Ad-Aware only found some bad cookies, but I can't update the definitions on the affected PC.

Thanks in advance!

Hello. I was here about a year and a half ago with a similar problem, and Chemist was incredibly helpful in fixing my computer right up. And so I'm back again (unfortunately), hoping that another great volunteer can help me once again.

I use Vista and I don't have access to a boot disk/windows install.

The problem is quite simple: any time I try to click on a link from google, I get redirected to some ad site. I also occasionally just get new tabs opening in my browser with similar ads.
The problem started today after Avira gave me a warning, then this System Security 2012 thing popped up talking about my computer being infected. Obviously this is the virus, so I tried to close it out, but it wouldn't let me open task manager, so I force-restarted the computer.
I tried to delete the System Security 2012 file, but that clearly didn't help, especially since I noticed in the logs that this file matches the location of the System Security 2012 on my computer:
mRun: [jmmmH6sWJ7fE8gZ8234A] c:\windows\system32\IccSS1ibD3on.exe

Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. A college student without the ability to use google is just a recipe for disaster .

Here is the string of events from Avira:
Virus or unwanted program 'TR/Rootkit.Gen [trojan]'
detected in file 'C:\Windows\System32\drivers\smb.sys.
Action performed: Allow access (I don't know why it allowed that)

Hi,

I can use some help. After entering my username and password to log on to my PC, then after i am connected to my network and all the start-up programs start a log in dialog box appears.

The Log in box states: Connect to "a1873.g.akamai.net". There's a field for a username and password. I just close the window and it disappears.
But everytime I restart my computer and log in the same log box appears.

I don't open any programs/applications/web browsers etc. The Log In box to connect to a1873.g.akamai.net just appears.

My operating system is: Windows Vista Home Premium

Hey everyone,

Then I am hitting the https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant>.onmicrosoft.com/oauth2/token?Content-Type=application/x-www-form-urlencoded end
point with https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com as resource. I am then using the access token retrieved to give the rest call to https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com/_api/v2.0/drives/b!3indYSbqZ0-hVSPnCgIZy-2xDMh7jH9AuQnEzJMc6TEfQoSJvJT-R6tT0lFBQiPr/root/delta
but it is failing with "error":{"code":"generalException","message":"General exception while processing"}}. The REST response code is 401 Unauthorized. I have filed a Microsoft support ticket but they
have asked me to post on these forms. Can someone please help me with this? I am not able to move forward because the error is pretty generic and doesn't give any additional details.
Thanks,

Browser (IE7) will frequently redirect to a page with a message "Sorry we couldn't find "http://www.atdmt.com..." or "http://ad.doubleclick.com" or other various tags (though these are most common).

Web pages will often not load at all or will redirect while reading a webpage without any user action.

Occasionally it will simply say unable to load "actual web page trying to visit". Also oddly - problem seems to occur much more frequently in the morning than evening. This makes me wonder if it is a internet provider issue.

Problem has been occuring over the last 2-3 weeks.

I have followed the 5 Step process to the letter and run DSS after the first four steps. The contents of file main.txt are listed below and extra.txt is attached as a separate file.

Very much appreciated in advance for your help when you get a chance to review this.

I have seen this on almost every windows 7 PC i have loaded this game on, and it is even is on my PC. Ok where do I begin?! I have been dealing with viruses, spyware/malware for the past week. It all started with Norton advising me that I had been infected with Trojan. Vundo and Trojan.Zonebac. After that I started receiving many different pop ups warning me about critical system alerts. I also had an annoying yellow triangle at the bottom of my screen warning me about different trojans and worms. More evil friends included 2 new icons that had made their home on my desktop one named "Live Safety Center" and the other "Online Security Guide", also installed was a new toolbar named "Security Toolbar 7.1". I have scanned my computer with many different programs and have somehow finally managed to get rid of the pop ups and toolbar, although I know I'm probably still infected somewhere. I'm sorry this is so long but, I wanted to explain EVERYTHING! I'm running Windows XP SP2, and have followed all steps to post. I downloaded DSS, but after many attempts to run, it just wouldn't let me. I do have a fresh hijackthis log and my Panda report, I hope this is good enough.
Many thanks in advance to whomever helps me, I am desperate!

I'm afraid HijackThis no longer provides the information we require.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link given below, as far as they possibly can, before posting for assistance.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html

If you have problems with any of the steps, simply move on to the next one and make a note of the problem in your reply.

Please note that the Security Forum is always busy, so I would ask for your patience while waiting for a reply - it may take a few days.

When I open an old (2003) Exel-file with VBA-code in it with Excel 2007, I get one of these two responses
and I do not know what causes Excel to make different choices
-----------------
1)
A Dialog Box: "Microsoft Excel Security Notce"
This one is very similar to the one in Excel 2003 and that is how I want Excel to behave.
The user has to “Enable Macros” to go on and work with the file.

2)
"Security Warning"
This one is new in 2007 and the user can continue to work with the file even if he does not see the security warning.
That means that VBA-code that I (the programmer) want to run when the file is opened, does not execute.
--------------------------

My problem is that I do not know what causes the two different behaviors and cannot force Excel to open files with the first Dialog box.
Can you?

A:Solved: Excel "Security Notice" vs "Security Warning"

I think most of the info will be in the dailog screen, i'sn't there's more text in the dialog box than the text you mentioned?

I think if you read through it it'll become clear.

It has all to do with the improved Security settings with 2007 and up

Found this in a simple search with Google:

This began after dumbly going to some non-commercial website. NAV auto-protect did initially detect an infection, but indicated it could not quarantine or delete.

Now when launching IE6, it attempts to redirect to a fake virus software website. When I choose the "not recommended" link, IE crashes shortly afterward. Also, I get a fake "Security Center Alert" popup every few minutes. I stupidly clicked on the link to update the security center.

With System Restore deactivated, I have run (all updated, full scans in safe mode) NAV, Ad-aware, Spybot, SpySweeper, Avira and CCleaner. (Then I found this website and learned I should have waited to do this.) Spybot found a couple of registry entries, but that was the only detection made by any of the programs, other than NAV's initial auto-protect message. File gmer.txt is attached.

Before any work can be done on this machine, there is something that requires your immediate intervention.

This machine is messed up pretty badly because you have several anti-virus programs on your machine. That's not a good idea!!

Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & produces undesirable results. Please uninstall ALL leaving only one of them.

ALL the antivirus programs must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstallPost a fresh logs when you have completed the above task.

Hello,

I'm running Windows XP SP 3. I have fake "Security Center Alert" popups and "Security Center" popups. A program called "Malware Defense" has also seemed to installed itself onto my computer. And I've just noticed porn icons appearing on my desktop. It's also disabled my Avira software.

GMER doesn't seem to run. I've clicked on it a couple of times but it doesn't seem to do anything. The DDS logs are attached/follows.

Thanks in advance!

Let's try this version of gmer.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

I did follow MicroBell's 5 Step process and the Panda scan said that no virus could be found. However, my Avast anti-virus warned me 5-6 times about files while I was running the Panda virus scanning. One of them was named "win.exe" and was in C:\temp\ but has now been deleted. Every time Avast issued a virus alert I chose the option to delete the file in question.

My ASUS computer (Windows 7, 64 bit) was infected by "AV Security 2012". It seems that it is bundled with "ZeroAccess Rootkit" because it won't allow any program to run, claiming that they are infected. Besides poping up alerts and windows, it also disabled "System Restore" function and won't allow me to boot into Safe Mode. It does not allow me to delete AV Security 2012v121.exe either.

I read a bunch of articles online about how to remove it, but apparently, the people who developed this virus are reading them too! This version of virus has rendered these instruction useless. This is way beyond me now. I need help from a few Einsteins to kick this virus's butt.

Below is the HijackThis log. It won't let me run DDS, downloaded from the first link, probably killed by the "ZeroAccess Rootkit".

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I have found other postings on various websites that have described this exact problem I'm having, so I know this isn't a complete one of a kind fluke, but have not found any solutions anywhere.

Almost all the icons on my system are showing the default icon for an "unknown file type". This is happening for all Office documents, PDF files, and also shortcuts to these files. Some file types have retained their correct icon, but not many. For applications that are affected, it is affecting both shortcuts to documents and to the application itself - for example, all MS Word documents on the desktop as well as the shortcut to the program in the "start" menu. However, the original program file at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\winword.exe shows the correct icon.

All of the icons still work fine - both a document and a shortcut to a document will call up the program and open the appropriate file in the application. If that were the only problem, I could live with it ...

However, at the same time that this happened, I'm finding that most Windows Upates won't install (and other programs as well - like an update to the Adobe PDF reader). All the updates that will install have been installed. The rest say "downloaded, ready to install" on the Windows Update page but when I try to install them it says "installation failed" at the end. Most just fail to install, but some - like Silverlight - throw a message during ... Read more

I've tried lots of things in safemode, etc. with Spybot, Malwarebytes, a Norten scanner, etc. either directly running or downloading/renaming, or by downloading on another computer and using memory stick to transfer. Nothing stays launched, runs nor completes.

What a pain in the butt. I use AVG and whatever it did jumped right through in no time.......I've read lots of posts in cnet, pctools, a few here, etc.

What a mess.

Some people have way to much free time......maybe they ought to get a job somehow using these skills...they'd make a mint.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

A:Time changed to 24h and reads "VIRUS ALERT!" also various "Security Alert" popups

Apologies for the double-post. I could not see an edit function.
I've cleaned out a couple of nasties with Adaware, although i've not seen much change - still getting the same "VIRUS ALERT!" and popups. Still, I thought it best to update the log:

Hi

Is it possible to start the app without "Security Worning" window ("Cancel. Open, More Info" buttons)? If yes, how you can make changes then?

Is it possible to start the app without "Microsoft Access" window on the background?

Thanks,
Barbos

This came up Immediately after Kaspersky detected a trojan. I am embarrassed to say, But I was at myspace when it popped up. So you know it's bad news! It can't be just some carrier out of Hawaii, India. I was reading a Closed thread posted on this site saying problem solved. This is why I had to register, because in that thread I found no solution. The people that posted on this topic joked around about conspiracy nuts and how it was just some innocent carrier, Not Even! I was just trying to go to Amd Ati site to get a driver, everything was okay until I went to click - download button - Then I got the message that mozilla did not trust this site, blah blah blah. I was just at that site a few days ago and had no problem then. I do believe there is a conspiracy, and some of the people involved are the ones posting things like, (it's just an innocent this and that, don't worry about it.) So this could be my first and last post, you know what they do to people that try to expose the conspirators, they send the guys in black suits to your house and your never heard from again. If anyone really knows how to get rid of this problem, let me know, please hurry though I'm not sure how much time I have left.
