How Can I Speed Up Explorer's Minimise Animation?

Q: How Can I Speed Up Explorer's Minimise Animation?

I've been doing a lot of tweaking to my Windows Desktop lately with regedit and I thought there should an entry in regedit that can help reduce the animation duration when I minimise and restore Windows in explorer.

Preferred Solution: How Can I Speed Up Explorer's Minimise Animation?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Feyisayo,

I'm not sure about adjusting the animation time, but you could turn it off to have them open and close instantly if you like.

So I've been all over google searching for a tweak to adjust the animation duration of explorer when you minimise a window, NOT DISABLING THE ANIMATIONS.

I want to believe there's a registry tweak buried somewhere there that allows reducing the minimise animation, if you pay close attention, you'll notice the Explorer minimise animations in Windows 8.1 are a tad faster than Windows 8's. Will appreciate if anyone knew a way to tweak the animation.

A:How to reduce explorer's minimise animation duration?

Based on this tutorial, I don't think you can set the duration without a serious custom program. You might try WindowFX - Animate and manage open windows on your desktop. Add "Window Shake" to Vista or XP

confirm my suspicions... im pretty sure that the processor speed in this case plays a role in the speed something renders in 3d animation programs and not RAM

if im wrong tho.. plz correct me!!!

A:3d animation-> what determines render speed?

Yes, if you keep RAM a constant, rendering speed is directly proportional to processor speed.

Hi @ all... Is it possible to adjust the anmination speed of the minimizing, maximizing, snap-feature and so on? Perhaps something like changing a value in the registry which sets the animation time in milliseconds? Thanks for all solutions... Greetz -Osiris-

A:Windows 7 - Adjust Animation Speed?

Hi -Osiris-,
Based on my knowledge, we cannot change the animation speed of the minimizing, maximizing, snap-feature. However, it is possible to set the Aero Peak desktop preview delay time. To do this, please refer to the steps below:
1. Click the "Start" button, type "regedit" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar, right click on the "regedit.exe" found in the list and then click "Run as administrator".
2. Navigate to the following key:
3. Right click the Advanced entry on the left pane, choose "Export", select "Desktop" in the "Save in" box and type "backup" (without quotation marks) in "File Name". Click "Save".
Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named "backup.reg". We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the "backup.reg" file.
4. Right click on the Advanced entry on the left pane, choose "New" -> "DWORD".
5. Rename the DWORD as DesktopLivePreviewHoverTime.
6. Double click the newly created DesktopLivePreviewHoverTime, choose Decimal and change its value to the one you desired.
NOTE: Remember the value should be given in milliseconds, so if you want to set the delay time to 5 seconds, set the value to 6000.
7. Log off the user account or restart the computer to take effect.

Hey All,

This is an excellent tip for Windows 7 users. Other versions of Windows may have similar ways to disable the fade and animation menus, but these steps will be for Windows 7. Note that by default, Windows turns on a lot of menu fade in and out controls when programs and menus are opened and closed. They may look cool, but they also consume tons of memory, can be unnecessarily trying on the CPU, and consume computer resources that can be better used for your system elsewhere:

To Disable These Animations and Fades:

1.) Click the Windows Start Button Icon.
2.) type the word "fade" (no quotes) in the search box
3.) select change the appearance of Windows from the list of choices. Click on that list.
4.) A dialogue box opens. These are your appearances and theme choices for how programs, menus, and other selections that are set by default in Windows 7.
5.) Click on the Customize Radio Button.
6.) Uncheck All items that say they word "Fade", "Animation", or any form of the word animate in them.
7.) Click Apply
8.) Click OK
9) Now close out of everything and try to open up your programs, such as your browser, Office Programs, Folders, right-clicking. Everything will open up about twice as fast because animation and fade options are all turned off!

Does anybody know how I can get a "minimise all" shortcut on my desktop (or quick launch bar), rather than using the "Show Desktop" icon? i.e. I want a shortcut that performs the action of pressing Win+M.

I know that if I wanted to get a "Show Desktop" icon I'd create a new text document and type:

and save it as .scf but this isn't what I'm after...

A:Minimise All Desktop Shortcut?

OK, i went through all the possibilities as creating a vbs script which could launch a scf file, then open sidebar.exe.
Though it worked fine i was not really satisfied with the method as it uses a trick vs the Windows Key + M which uses the system.
Then i remembered that i had the shell apllications commands somewhere, did not find them but remembered some simple commands and just wrote this very small vbs script which seems to work fine.

Open Notepad, copy/paste these lines:

Dim WshShell
Set shell = wscript.CreateObject("Shell.Application")

Save as ShowDesktop.vbs for example, anywhere on your hdd.

Then create a shortcut on your desktop which refers to the vbs file, name it Show Desktop, change the icon to one of those that you can find in explorer.exe (or the icon of your choice in any library) and put this shortcut in your quick launch bar and delete the original one (you could put it back whenever you want).
That's all!

Hope it helps.

This is a weird one.

I have a PC which boots up okay and I can double click on any icon, they open and when I minimise them they minimise. When I start Internet Explorer it all works fine with other icons maximising and minimising as they should. However when I close Internet Explorer I can't click on any icons and when I select them from the Start, Programs menu they start but won't minimise.

I have no idea why this is happening as it's a brand new XP build on an old PC.

Any thoughts?

I have been using Office 2010 quite happily on a laptop with Windows 7 but cannot get Word 2010 to work on my Windows XP SP3 machine.

All the other Office 2010 applications work OK and most of Word works.

What I cannot do is minimise or close a document using the top right hand boxes.

If I click any of them Word freezes and I have to use Task Manager to close the application.

I can close it by using the File > Exit route.

I have completely removed all versions of Office from the XP through 2003 and 2007 versions that were on the machine.
I then ran a regedit search and removed all references I could find to Office.

I then ran CCleaner to scan for errors and cleaned the registry.

Then I cleaned the registry with the registry cleaner from UniBlue.

Then I did a clean install of Office 2010

Problem exactly the same.

It's not a show stopper but makes for inconvenience as I like to move open documents to a second screen or to shrink them so I can see other documents from which I need text.

Any assistance will be gratefully received although as I travel often please forgive me if I am slow to respond.

I'm having an issue as decribed above. Any time I try to run a game while I have either google desktop or windows sidebar open it minimises to the taskbar and will not restore unless I exit the sidebar app, this happens with all games i've tested so far. Also, i could previously have VLC running in fullscreen on the second monitor, but I can no longer do this, the video freezes - yet sound continues.

I'm using a dual screen setup on Windows Vista home premium edition, previously I could run a game while having sidebar open, as I like to display clock and some other mini-apps on my second screen. I have an ATI X1300 pro, with latest drivers and latest version of Catalyst Control Centre. Is this a problem anyone else has had and/or knows a solution for?

How long
Well this has been happening for about a month now, and it's really starting to tick me off.

What's happening isn't a crash, but it is really annoying. I'll be playing a game, or watching a movie in WMP (Not playing music), and the current open screen will minimize to the taskbar, and show me the desktop. I can go back into the application simply by clicking on it in the taskbar, but sometimes in games it will take a minute for the game to pick up where it was at again.

My take
Now I'm assuming it is something to do with my graphics card drivers, or the graphics card itself, as it is only happening when 'graphical' things are being run.

My hardware
Athlox XP 2800+
512mb Pc3200
Ti4200 128mb
80gb 7.2k
ASUS Mo/bo
(Yes, I know. I bought it two years ago and haven't upgraded since.)

If anyone could help me, and give me some suggestions, that would be great.

Hey there,

I own an HP Compaq NX6125 laptop, it's all standard except i upgraded the memory with a 2nd 512mb RAM stick. Running Windows XP Pro.

My first issue was that my laptop was loading windows extremely slowly or rather not at all, until I started tapping the keys on the keyboard or moving the mouse/touchpad a lot. It begins just when windows is first loading after the BIOS screen.

Then it will alternate between normal running or slowing and freezing until the keyboard is repeatedly typed a lot or the mouse moved for a good few minutes then the laptop will process things as normal.

I scanned the laptop for viruses and found a variant of the virus smitfraud. I used a number of tools to get rid of this virus, which seemed to work. However it just meant the laptop was not 'as' bad at freezing as before, but it still did suffer from it.

I then decided to re-format and start from scratch. However, after wiping the hard drive, re-installing windows, the laptop still slows. In fact during the re-install of windows it was slow and needed to be 'sped-up' by button bashing and mouse moving.

When using windows, it seems to be explorer that is the worst, and this is when I minimise windows, maximise or try to use a drop down menu or the start button. general use of webpages, opening folders etc. works fine un... Read more

I did a fresh install of Windows yesterday and for the first first few reboots, all Aero features were working fine (once I had installed my Nvidia drivers, of course). But for some reason now, a few of the features are broken.

If I for example click the File Explorer shortcut on the superbar, it doesn't open with a cool effect, it just "appears" simply - as if I'm using Aero Basic. Aero Snap works, but the sort of "pulse" or "circle" effect you get around the mouse pointer, doesn't appear. Also when I minimize a window, it simply disappears, instead of the cool effect it usually is.

And yet, Aero Peek works, as does the "Win Key + Tab" window selection AND the full Aero Glass / Transparency effects.

I've already looked under "Adjust performance" settings, Windows had already select all of the Aero effects for me, the only unticked thing was "Save taskbar thumbnail previews".

I've also already ran the Aero troubleshooter with no success.

My WEI is 7.4 and my specs are as follows:
Intel Core i7 3770K
128GB SSD (1.5TB HDD)
8GB RAM (1600Mhz)
Nvidia GTX 560Ti

At first I thought this could be due to my manual setting of the page file (a low 512MB minimum 1024MB maximum) however I can confirm that letting Windows manage my page file again (and rebooting afterwards) has not solved the problem.

It's very annoying having a half-baked Aero experience and I hope you can help me with it.

Hi, apologies in advance - I'm sure this has been discussed before but a quick search didn't turn up any similar threads... feel free to just reply with a useful link!

I'm just doing a new install of MS Vista Ultimate 64bit on a 128GB Samsung ssd. I have a 1.5TB hdd to use for bulk storage and games, and an external 1.5TB drive in a caddy too - so storage space is not an issue.

However, even before WIndows Update has finished it's most recent bout, my install is running at a staggering 30.6GBs!!! All I've installed so far is Windows itself, all the hardware drivers and Firefox + a few plugins. And WU is still downloading stuff as I type this...

What I'd like to know is what I can do to shrink this massive install size down a bit... I have turned off System Restore but haven't restarted yet (WU is taking *hours* at the moment, literally...). Will leaving this off help? Do I also have to manually delete the backup/restore file image too?

There is another biggish file called hiberfil.sys iirc. That is for when I put the PC into hibernation - I don't usually ever do that. Can I delete this and/or turn off the hibernate function safely? Again, do I have to manually remove the actual file/folder or will Windows do that (on restart, perhaps)?

Supposedly there is/are folder(s) with tons of excess drivers that MS included with Vista but which I don't need - how big is this and can it be safely deleted?

Likewise, what happens to all the update files that Windows Updat... Read more

A:How to minimise my Vista Ultimate 64bit installation size?

OK, slight update... I found a windows(old) folder! So that got deleted. From a past failed install, could have sworn I'd installed to a clean, freshly formatted drive - but I guess not. Anyway that is about 5GBs that's now gone... So, 'just' 26GBs currently (but still increasing...)

I can't tell if turning off System Restore made a difference though.

I have the oddest problem thats occuured in the past few days.

It appears to be connected with the opening and closing and switching between tasks.

For no apparent reason, the window you either want to close or one that's been opened and you need to say click on a button to start a task, just fails to respond. The only way to unfreeze and carry on with your work is to open task manager then you can click on any line of info on the list, dont take any action in task manager, just close it down. Then you can carry on with what you were doing.

I'm running a relatively new machine with XP SP3.

I've reinstalled XP and I've checked the machine for all sorts of nasties and there's nothing.

This problem can be in programs, browsers (firefox is the worst. If you load a new page, all the URL links will not be accessible, meaning when you mouse over they do not change the cursor, til you do what I mentioned withthe task manager).

I have checked the system performance with task manager open and I am not getting any sudden drains on the machine, which is a pretty fast processor (dual core) and working with 4 Gb or RAM.

One other thing I noticed. Say you have a page of icons on screen for example in control panel. Single click to highlight one of them and then I would usually double click to perform the action. Now I can't double click because I get a small box open withthe options available open etc.

I have no idea why this is happening, but I reckon ... Read more

Hi Everyone

For the past 10 years I have enjoyed excellent, fast browsing using Internet Explorer on my 32 bit XP Home PC. Recently, I had to reinstall XP but even after getting all the updates and installing Google Chrome because it was obvious IE unable to cope, my browsing became a nightmare. I therefore installed Windows 7 Ultimate x 32 bit, upgrading IE to 11 in the process but I still find Browsing to be frustratingly slow. I have tried IE with no addons but it seems I still have to wait for all the adverts and pop ups to load before I can start browsing a particular website.

Am I the only one experiencing this or is the Industry trying to force us into upgrading to the latest OS's. Any comments would be much appreciated to prevent me throwing my PC out the Window.

A:How can I speed up Internet Explorer 11

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I made this a while back,
Internet explorer tweaks - Microsoft Community
Some of the screen shots are gone but I'll work on it and restore them,
Bottom line really is to not use Compatibility view lists from M$ that actually helps a lot,
Alt+TB or Menubar/ Tools/ Compatibility view settings
Uncheck all of the boxes
Then just delete your browser history to get rid of the ones that have already been installed,
Alt+TD or Ctrl+Shift+Delete keys when ie is open
Check all of the boxes except for the very top one Uncheck it/ then delete.
You can Uncheck form fills if you use that feature.

When I launch file explorer in Windows 8.1 A Green Bar appears in the address bar and moves from left to right. Depending upon which folder I am in and whether or not I am accessing another disk drive this green bar moves fast or slow. When I am accessing a network drive it moves VERY slow and I have to wait 30 seconds to see the contents of the drive. How do I turn this feature off? Are there other ways of speeding up windows explorer loading?

A:Speed up explorer loading.

Things to try:

1. Disable the Windows Search sevice via running services.msc and finding/disabling the service
(Caution: Metro search capabilities will be affected)

2. Rebuild your Search Index via Control Panel > Indexing Options
(not required if item 1. was done)

3. Uncheck to box in the pcture below for the drive in question
(note this will take some time to complete)

Since I do not use the Metro Search (I use explorer search only), I have elected to implement 1. and 3. on my PC and 2. takes care of itself. Hope this helps.
Good luck,

I really like all the features of Internet Explorer 8, BUT, it is so slow I can't stand it any longer. I have to wait 30 seconds for every page to turn. When I use Firefox, its very snappy and pages change in seconds. What could it be that makes IE8 so slow?

I have Intellimouse Explorer mouse and am using it with Windows Xp on my new Abit 865chipset system (I have latest BIOS). It works fine except that speed often kicks down after system has been up a while. I have two monitors hooked up and I have mouse set to a high speed so that I can move cursor from one monitor to another without having to move mouse all over keypad too much.

Anyhow, it works fine after bootup but sometimes will slow down to regular slow speed after it has been on a few hours. I looked at Mouse control thing and acceleration and everything seems to be set in place.

The only way I have found to fix this is to reboot. I'm wondering if anyone has a fix for this?

Not sure.....but it would be interesting to check Device Manager when that mouse slows down...see if there are any exclamation marks next to the device listing. This isn't a USB mouse is it?

I've been noticing that ever since I upgraded to the Windows 7 Beta my download speeds have been very slow I'm not sure if it's Windows 7 or Internet Explorer 8 though. The fastest download speed I've gotten is 40Kb/s. Does anyone have any suggestions to speed this up? Just incase you might need it my maximum download speed is normally 1.2Mb/s.

Source: petri.co.il - Increase Broadband Connection Speed in Windows XP/2003 (January 2009 article)

This tip is designed for increased BROADBAND speed in Windows XP while using standard Network Interface cards (NIC) that are connected to ADSL modems, or when using any directly-connected USB ADSL modem.

To speed up the Internet connection speed we need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory in order to enable it to better deal with interrupts made from the NIC or the USB modem.

This tip is only recommended if you have 256MB RAM or higher.

Step #1 - Identify the IRQ used by the NIC/USB modem

1. Open the System Information tool by running MSINFO32.EXE from the Run command.

2. Expand System Summary > Hardware Resources > IRQs.

3. Look for the listing made for your NIC (in my case - a Intel? PRO/100+ Management Adapter). Note the IRQ next to the specified line (in my case - IRQ21).

In case of USB modems you will first need to find the right USB device used by your modem. Follow these steps:

1. Open the Device Manager tool by running DEVMGMT.MSC from the Run command (or by right-clicking My Computer > Hardware tab > Device Manager button).

2. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and expand it.

3. Right-click the USB Root Hub and select Properties. Note that you might need to do so for all listed USB Root hubs (if there are more than one) in order to find the right one.
