OS Repair didn't work. Comp won't turn on. Help please!

Q: OS Repair didn't work. Comp won't turn on. Help please!

-I have an HP laptop, bought from a year ago. I tried repairing the my Win Xp operating system because my computer was a little slow and i thought it might help. I followed all the instructions on the manual. After it was done repairing, it restarted.

-However, this is what came up. And if you can't see the pictures, then there's a description on the bottom. (I'm a computer newbie)

Then...

Then...

After that, the computer just restarts. I tried doing a disk check in BIOS, I booted the computer with and without the OS repair CD, is there something I'm missing?

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED THANK YOU!!! Sorry for such a long thread!

Description:
1)The computer turns on, then it goes to the screen that says Windows didn't start successfully and gives you the different options to boot up (like safe mode, ect).
2)No matter what I choose, it goes to another screen that says "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent any damage." The other parts say, "Check your computer for viruses...run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption..."
3) Then, the computer restarts. HOW CAN I CHECK FOR VIRUSES WHEN I CAN'T EVEN TURN MY COMPUTER ON!?

Preferred Solution: OS Repair didn't work. Comp won't turn on. Help please!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I guess the pictures didn't work, but #2 is the "blue screen" just to be more clear.

Hi. Please see the attached thread regarding malware which has stopped me logging into Windows. Following the advice I have contacted the manufacturer and obtained the OEM reinstallation and repair disk.

I have run a repair but the problem has not gone away - when I try to login the user is immediately logged off.

Please can you advise me?

A repair won't matter if you are infected. You need to ensure your HDD is clean. Have you completed the clean up in the other thread?

Today, my HP pavilion dv7 laptop thats running on Windows 7 64 bit will not start. It was acting a little slow and then it completely froze and shut down. When i turned it on again it when to the starting windows screen and the windows logo never came and it went right into a startup repair. The startup repair didn't work and i tried to boot it up using a windows 7 64 bit CD and its searching for problems right now but it's been doing that for hours. I've read up on this a little bit and it is a big laptop so i know it may take a little longer to check through everything, but i was wondering if there's a better or faster method to fix this laptop? I do plan on probably getting it checked out but i really want to get my files off of it first because there's a lot of things on there i need

Hi,

The issue is with the version of software you mention, that is Vista 64 bit & only SP1.

A fresh install from your recovery DVD & a full update (Lots of them), should sort it out.

No hating on CNet (they're usually pretty good), but when I posted something about this issue and someone replied back to do something and then post what happened, I did so and have yet to get a reply. Ick! I thought CNet was one of the better people to go to for issues.

Anyway, the issue itself as I posted it on CNet ( http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6122_10...39906&messageID=2440341&viewMode=flat#2440341 ):

I recently bought a Asus A8V-VM Socket 939 Motherboard (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-detailsInactive.asp?Sku=A455-2136) (about a month or so ago) and then even more recently got me a Aspire X-Infinity case (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16811144076) to put all of this in (the AMD Athlon 64 processor (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819103023), two memory sticks, a Sound Blaster sound card, two Maxor HDDs, two DVD disc drives (one just a DVD Rom, the other a DVD Burner)). I had plugged everything in several times, trying different orientations and what not, making sure everything is in right, but nothing will turn on except the mobo LED light on the board. I am not sure if it's the power supply or something not plugged in right (there are two extra cables that aren't plugged in, one that according to the instructions I shouldn't have to plug in and the other is a male connector to something in which the directions give no heed about whatsoever). I assume the mobo... Read more

A:Help! Comp won't start and cnet didn't help much!

I'm with you brother*

First* I bought that mobo (motherboard) and all my hardware and an Aspire case too, except at newegg. I did not have 2 hd's and that much stuff. I had a much better experience getting mine going but still had snaggs. ie... I didn't have all the front case wires plugged correctly. I exhausted myself to no end with my 1st build and it was for my 16 son.
I asked around for a week and found a lone-guy puter shop in a town next to mine who took me right in, reconnected everything, gave me his own ide cables and setup the bios for 50.00 freaking bucks!

Get some sleep, find someone reputable in your area , call explain like I did about for your son, etc... and get some prices. If the guy is as good as mine was, he explained what "i did wrong" and you will learn from it. 1st time is the hardest, I swear once it gets cranking you'll be building another asap.
Just food for thought, i was on a time-table though and had to get it done by xmas!

The simple standard is- take the mobo out and place on top of it's cardboard box.
put in one stick of ram, attach the cpu & heatsink/fan
plug in the monitor / mouse
plug in the psu
say ten hail mary's << just kidding.
turn on
start there if you please, I couldn't anymore and let the ego- go and brought to that guy* "" JUST MY OPINION""

I was having problems with my computer and a BSOD that pointed to my hd. I decided to reinstall XP but then decided to try a repair first. The repair seems to work to an extent as pc starts fine now and seems to load normally etc. However upon starting I noticed the desktop had reverted back to default, my programs weren't listed in the start menu and favorites were gone. I was guessing that it wiped my hd like I had done a re-install. So I went to copy some of my backed up files but when I went into My Computer I see that all my files are still there under C:\Documents&Settings\Owner like before. But also under Documents & Settings are these folders now.

When I copy favorites from Owner to Owner.DESKTOP they will show up inside IE so I am guessing Owner.DESKTOP is what is running. When I go into Program Files and try to start any of my programs I get an error message saying it's not installed or similar.

So what should I do? Go ahead and re-install XP or is there a way to get rid of all that other stuff and get back to just plain Owner? (even if I have to reinstall my programs) Thanks.

I tried unpluggin everything, holding the power button, and doing the thing where you press the power button 11 times and hold for 30 seconds also with no luck. I called Lenovo and they didn't seem to interested in helping me even though this is a known issue that Lenovo has ackoleded in a previous post. I'm not interested in paying any repair fees as it's Lenovo's issue. I'm not paying for their mistakes. Any help is appriciated.

Hi all, I hope someone can help me restore usability to my XP SP3 installation on my Dell refurb. I've lost my original user and program settings after a repair installation.

It all started when the user told me they had an event using Firefox that necessitated rebooting their computer. Upon restarting, they got a black pre-Windows screen indicating that the SYSTEM file was not going to work. (I wished I copied the wording; I didn't.)

I tried booting off a Windows XP SP3 slipstream disc that I use for these occasions, went to the repair installation option (not the Recovery Console initially), but the XP system could not be found, just the partition.

Next I went into Recovery Console to see what registry hive files were in the CONFIG folder. All five were there - SOFTWARE, SYSTEM, DEFAULT, SAM, and SECURITY - plus one called SYSTEM.SAV with smaller size and much older file date.

I tried backing up these five files to a TMP directory, but the SYSTEM file could not be copied. I renamed SYSTEM as SYSTEM.bak and SYSTEM.SAV as SYSTEM, but that didn't help reboot or recognize as a working system as again I tried doing a repair install from CD.

Next I found similarly named files in the REPAIR folder except the SYSTEM file was not there, just one called SYSTEM.BAK. I copied all five of those files to the CONFIG folder, having backed up the original five files (minus SYSTEM, which wouldn't copy). I renamed SYSTEM.BAK from the REPAIR folder as SYSTEM ... A:Windows XP repair didn't preserve my original user/settings...HELP!

The registry hives in the Repair folder are placed there during the initial XP install. If you used those hives then no program installed after the XP install would work.

Do you still have the initial registry hives in config you backed up? Put those back in config. If not then you would need to reinstall all programs.

Look in the hidden folder System Volume Information. Is there a folder named restore with a long suffix. Double click it. Do you see any folders with a RPXX name where XX is a number?

Hello,

I'm writing about my brother's Samsung R780 laptop (running Windows 7 64 bit), which recently stopped working. When he starts the computer, he gets the following error: "Windows Error Recovery." Searching around online led us to create a system repair disk on my laptop (which also runs Windows 7). When we boot with the disk in the drive, a prompt asking for our language (which is greyed out so we can't change it) and our keyboard (which we can change) appears. Without changing the keyboard option, we press 'next' and then it freezes.

We've also tried the 'repair your computer' option in the Advanced Boot Options, but it also freezes.

We don't know what else to try. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Hi, I would really appreciate some advice before I go and get professional paid services. This is my business computer and I have important stock control and accountancy programs installed on it, loosing which would cause me big troubles.

Nevertheless, I was stupid enough to play around with it and try to install Magix movie edit pro 11 plus, original genuine program I bought some time ago. I thought it should be ok since it worked perfectly on my old computer. It didn't install correctly. I had to abrupt installation because everything hooked up. I tried to uninstall it, but it wouldn't allow me. Then I used Revo uninstaller pro which claimed to remove incomplete installations. I did install some other programs but I don't think they could have caused a problem.

After few days my computer won't start. It boots up to the windows logo and then freezes on a black screen with a white arrow.
I ran Start up Repair which didn't fix the problem. I also tried to do system recovery and to restore computer to the earlier point of time. For some reason I only got like 3 earlier points. I thought Windows it backing up computer regularly by default.

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

A:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

When I attempt to open the IE7 it says "unhandled exception in 3rd party module, module ntdll.dll unicode; v.4,0,5,1
Can anyone help?

I had the syssecuritysite.com hijacked start page on my computer, along with the fake pop-up telling me I had to purchase their software to get rid of spyware etc. I received info on how to remove same. I was told to download SmitFraudFix, Spybot-S&D, Ewido and HijackThis. I downloaded all and was told how to proceed. I went through the steps, but was not informed to do so in SAFE mode! After I completed doing what I was told in each of the above, I restarted the computer. I no longer have the startup page, but it says "about:blank" and I can't change it on Internet Options. As well, I have high speed cable internet but it now runs slower than dial up. I have an HP Pavillion computer with AMD 3800+ processor running on Windows XP Media Edition. Can anyone help me get back online at high speed???

Hi and welcome to TSG,
If you have taken anything out of startups via msconfig please go to Start – Run – type in msconfig – click OK and click on the Startup tab. Click on Enable All then Apply and OK. Then please do the following:

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

My computer froze up and was giving me all kinds of problems so I decided to wipe it and start again (something I've done several times without issue).  When I got the OS booted back up, I went to install drivers.  This particular laptop doesn't have a disc drive, so I have an external one plugged in.  The problem is there's no drivers for the USB ports, SD slot, ethernet, or wi-fi.  As far as I can tell, I literally have no way whatsoever to load anything onto the computer.  Any ideas on what I'm missing?  Thanks!

A:Tried re-installing the OS... didn't work

Welcome,
You loaded the OS from an external device and are able to boot the computer, correct? If you can make a wire connection to a modem or router you should be able to configure the basic OS to see the Internet and then get all of its updates downloaded and installed. It's going to take several rounds of downloading, installing, rebooting and downloading again. Many of the updates are sequential and must be installed in order, to work correctly.
Once you have the OS up to date and the security software activated and current we can go looking for the drivers you need online.
Keep us posted

Hi, this is my first post although I have used the website to help remove Windows Recovery virus. It appears that this virus has become rampant very quickly and is a real pain in the butt!I have followed various instructions posted on this website by many knowledgeable people ( I am you average "Joe" when it comes to pcs) and have managed to get rid of the virus. Malwarebytes didn't seem to cure it, telling me that, after removing 3 threats, my system was clean. It wasn't however, so I ran Superantispyware. This did the trick and cleaned the lot out. TDSS didn't find anything either.Of course, I then still had the annoying post-virus rubbish to sort out, such as missing files, shortcuts gone, start-up entries showuing as "empty", etc etc.I have tried running "unhide.exe" a few times, with AVG installed, no joy. I then uninstalled AVG, ran unhide again, still no joy. Unhide completed and told me that my files were now all visible, but they are not. Some things did come back, such as Sopcast and Spywareblaster but most remain hidden. I can access one or two through "Start"-"All programmes" etc but most are still showing as empty or have vanished all together, such as microsoft paint, word etc etc.I have still got photos etc.I did run Combofix b ut it didn't seem to make much difference. Please help, I would be really grateful,ThankyouMod Edit: Posted CF log data sent by PM to me, then moved topic back to MRL ... First off, this is an awesome site with a plethora of valuable information that has been so helpful to me in the past. This is the first time i've had to post though, since i've tried EVERYTHING to get rid of the irritating Malware pop up threats like cyberlog-x, networm-i. Trojanspy w32, [email protected] and [email protected] I'm starting to get scared because my computer is slowly getting more messed up (freezing etc.) I have followed the Smitfraudfix instructions and restarted in safe mode and all that jazz. I've used Spyware Doctor, Ad-aware, Trend micro, and Spybot Search and destroy. They find stuff and fix it, but the pop up bubbles keep happening I don't know what to do. The smitfraud fix seemed to help everyone else. Plese Help! I have attached my hijackthis.log and an Ad-awarel log.

I've lost my pictures from a vacation to Sweden!

I thought I burned them to a DVD-R, but the disc shows empty when I load it in the drive. I can see on the disc a portion of the disc has been burned though.

When I burned it, it did say it would take 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete the copy, and when I came back, the files were on the Windows Explorer window associated with the DVD.

Using Windows Explorer, I selected pictures and videos on my iPhone that was connected (didn't import because my hard drive was full, and therefore couldn't restore it from the trash when I deleted them from my phone), right clicked to copy, and pasted to a DVD-R.

Like I said, it said "1 hr 40 mins to copy". When I came back, the files showed that they were on the DVD-R, and here's where I screwed up: I went to my iPhone and deleted the files before ejecting the DVD, where it usually says "preparing the disc to be used on other computers".

I then opened a pic from the DVD, and tried to rotate it. Can't remember exactly what happened, but Windows Explorer then showed nothing on the disc.

I ejected the disc, and it came out, but didn't say "preparing the disc to be used on other computers".

Now when I put the DVD in a drive, it shows as an empty disc. I can see about 1/3 of the disc has something burned on it, which is the right amount of data that should have been burned, so the data is there.

Help! It's my kids first visit to Europe!

Cam.

A:DVD Burn Didn't work

Hi PepperMill and Welcome to TSF,

What application did you use?

Depending on what application you used to burn the disc, it stores the files on different locations. Some makes an ISO(Image) file of it, and some stores the raw data in the temporary files folder.

Go to Start > Search.
Type "%temp%" without the quotes > Hit ENTER.

Navigate around and see if you can find any files associated to it.

Furthermore, are you sure you weren't using an -RW drive and just didn't close it properly? Go into the application you burned from and see if you can close the drive, or add another file or so to the drive, just burn another .txt file to it.

Ok i bought a router for our roadrunner service a while back, and it constantly logs us off about once an hour. I've been dealing with that problem for a while now. I remember at my apt at school we had cable internet also, but i had a cross over cable hooked up from the cable modem to the first port of the HUb. I just bought a hub today and a cross over cable with hopes of doing that over here, and not having to worry about getting booted off with the router every hour. Will this work? And if not, why did it work at school and not here, please help.

A:Router didn't work, got hub..please help

It depends on your specific contract with your ISP. If you have multiple IP addresses from the cable provider, you can use a hub and connect one computer to each IP address. For instance, if you had three IP addresses, you could connect up to three computers and share the Internet, but the 4th computer would be left out. However, if you only have a single IP address allocated, this won't work.

You might try solving the problem with the router, they're normally very easy to get going...

ok... this may not make sense, but.......

My work uses the Novell Netware Logon thingy whenever you get on the computer. Before I actually worked here and was just a volunteer, I used the name and password of an ex-employee, Anne. I never had any problems at all. I used my AOL and YAHOO and things were just fine.
When I got employeed here, they changed my name and password for me, and the settings on my computer changed. Now that I am logging on using my own name and password, my computer has gone haywire. Pop-ups show up on my computer all the time, whether I'm using Internet Explorer or not. CONSTANT pop-ups. It's gets so bad that I can't even do typing work in Microsoft Word because they pop up so often...
I also get a message whenever I log on that says:
" wintask.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program error log.”
I’ve ran Spybot and Adaware and even thought it finds problems, THIS problem has yet to be fixed by running these things.

The computer guy here is NO help, which means I’m going to have to do this myself…. Can anyone help?!

I used my recovery cd, put it in drive then booted computer. It went thru this thing about setting up files, then ask me if I wanted to install or recovery console. I chose install, then repair and it started setting up windows. But after it was done and I went into windows, everything was still there. I thought it basically erased everything and put it back the way it was when you got it. But every program that has been loaded or downloaded was still there and still have the 100% cpu usage.
Thanks
Phil

A:Recovery Disk didn't work

When you selete repair it will only fix the windows files. So if you have a third party app that is causing problems a repair install will not fix it. If you want to erase everything on you machine and start from scratch you have to choose new install and format the current partitions. ***Warning*** this will erase everything on your computer so be sure to back up any important files.

Also have you tried running a spyware and virus scan? We may be able to fix the problem with out having to erase your entire machine.

Last night, my computer was infected with the [email protected] I have a Toshiba laptop running Vista. I have up to date McAfee & AdAware. Neither program finds any problem with the computer but Internet Explorer will not open. The window opens and it says it's loading but nothing ever appears in the window no matter how long I wait.

I also have Safari on my computer and am using it to access this forum. Per instructions I read here, I downloaded SmitFraudFix.exe. I ran it in safemode. It did not take very long and did not prompt me to restart during the process as expected. It also did not fix the problem as Explorer still will not open. Other programs seem to work properly but I'm afraid to open too many other things in case that infects them too. I do have an email program that is not web-based. It seems to be working fine in spite of the fact that it's the program where the original corrupted email was.

Greetings Tempestus and Welcome to the Forums,Your gmer log does indicate some problems. Are you certain to have disabled Symantec's script blocking feature? If not, that would explain why it didn't work for you. To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking:1. Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.2. Click Options. If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.3. In the left pane, click Script Blocking.4. In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).5. I think it's an known issue, and SONY are willing to repair it because it might be a defect in 2001 PS2s, but if the4 PS2 you have looks tampered with, then they will charge you for the repair (or not if the rpair is more than $200.00)

I was hit by cryptowall losing many pictures of my toddler and the SD card containing all the pictures I have of my newborn. I paid the ransom and ran decrypt zip, but none of the files are viewable. I have the private and public key. Is there any way to restore my pictures? Especially the ones on SD card.

A:Cryptowall - ransom didn't work

A repository of all current knowledge regarding CryptoWall, CryptoWall 2.0 & CryptoWall 3.0 is provided by Grinler (aka Lawrence Abrams), in this topic: CryptoWall and DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION Ransomware Information Guide and FAQThere are also ongoing discussions in these topics:CryptoWall - new variant of CryptoDefense Support & DiscussionCryptoWall 3.0 Support & DiscussionRather than have everyone start individual topics, it would be best (and more manageable for staff) if you posted any questions, comments or requests for assistance in one of those topic discussions. Doing that will also ensure you receive proper assistance from our crypto malware experts since they may not see this thread. To avoid unnecessary confusion...this topic is closed.ThanksThe BC Staff

Hello! My laptop is a HP Steam Laptop PC and it won't correctly boot up ever since a failed attempt to reset. When I try to boot it up, it shows the beginning set up screen then goes black and turns off, it continues doing that over and over. Any way I can make it stop and work normally again?
