Downgrading from Vista to XP - Need drivers for Compaq CQ40-340TU

Q: Downgrading from Vista to XP - Need drivers for Compaq CQ40-340TU

I just bought a laptop yesterday, Compaq Presario CQ40-340TU. It came with Windows Vista Starter OS. Because of the limitations with networking, I need to install Windows XP on this laptop now. I have my own installer of Windows XP and can't afford to purchase a different version of Windows Vista so that's not an option for me.

I really hope someone can help me find drivers for Windows XP for the following. I'm not even sure if they're the right specifications for my laptop model but I found them on a site selling the same model and from the HP product information page.

I already have nLite and I'm ready to integrate SATA drivers with my WinXP installer but I don't know which drivers to include. Please, help me!

Preferred Solution: Downgrading from Vista to XP - Need drivers for Compaq CQ40-340TU

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Downgrading from Vista to XP - Need drivers for Compaq CQ40-340TU

I've already found the WinXP drivers for the graphics adapter and ethernet/NIC.
Basing it on the list of drivers available online for this laptop, the most important driver I need is for the chipset.
Also, for the SATA drivers that I should integrate in my WinXP installer, that I still need to find.
I don't know where to find them. I hope someone here can help me, pretty please.

Hello, I have a HP Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook. Currently, Windows Vista is installed on the notebook. I am planning to upgrade the notebook to Windows 7 Professional Edition. However, when I searched for drivers for Windows 7, I did not find any on HP website. I searched as follows: 1. Visited http://support.hp.com/us-en2. Entered Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook PC in the search box3. Selected Software and Drivers from the left menu4. Clicked Go5. Selected Windows in the Operating system dropdown list6. In the Version dropdown list, I only had two options; Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows Vista (64-bit). Even selecting one of these options displays:No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. Please make a different selection, or visit the product homepage. Please tell me the link for installing drivers for this notebook for Windows 7 Professional Edition. Regards,Aziz

Laptop- Compaq Presario F545eu

Hi all, this is my first post so here goes:

I've been on the HP so called support forum and have seen many other threads complaining about the same thing as me. I've already downgraded to XP from Vista on my new laptop and only now realise that HP/compaq website have only about 4 drivers available!! I had to do this as some work apps that i use simply woulnd't run on vista. This leaves me with no graphics driver, no wireless driver to name but a few. If anyone can help me with any driver information that would be great as HP seem not to have their act together at all.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,

It seems like the BSOD is chasing me...

This time it's about my own laptop.

Its a Compaq cq40 and It's been acting very strange since a couple of weeks.

Suddenly a BSOD will come up and restar my computer.... but I can still use it...

I'd like to fix it before trying to format the entire disc....

I'm posting the dump files...

Thanks in advance!

A:BSOD Compaq cq40

It seems like you may have bad memory and reinstalling windows will not fix this issue.
What you should try to do is get a copy of MemTest.

Burn it to a CD and check your RAM. Let it test about 3 times, as if it passed 100% once it may not be an accurate result!

Post back if you need more help or if you are ready to continue.

Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.

I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.

I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.

The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all.

I've been really tortured with a problem for about a month, with an Acer Aspire 5310, trying to find the proper drivers after downgrading it from Vista to XP. Well, what I got working so far are the Chipset driver and the VGA driver.

None of the sound drivers I've found has worked so far (Sound System: Intel High-Definition audio with MS-Sound compatible (and Dolby Digital Live)). I also have exclamation points in the Device Manager menu:
all under the heading "Other Devices": Ethernet Controller, Network Controller, Flash PCI Memory
and one under the heading "System Devices": PCI Device

I've been searching a lot, red about similar problems that other people had but yet no solution. I don't know what I do wrong or where else to search...

Do u know any link for what I really need? Or could u tell me the steps I should follow to fix this kind of mess? Please let me know as soon as possible, I will really appreciate it...

So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at www.hp.com.cn)

Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!

A:Can I install windows7 to my HP/Compaq CQ40-323AX?

How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.

Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.

NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.

P.S sorry for the late reply

Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!

A:Unexpected shutting off - Compaq Presario CQ40

If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.

A:Can't find drivers after downgrading from vista to windows xp

Welcome to TSF....

Since there has been a clean installation of Windows there are special drivers that have to be installed in order for the computer to run and function properly the drivers that are from the different manufacturers for their devices can be installed after these are. The special drivers like chipset, buss, network, audio, video and others, can be found on the Recovery Disk Set that comes with the computer or on-line in the Support area usually under Drivers and Downloads area [if it is an OEM like Compaq, Dell etc. or found on the motherboard manufacturers site for the computer. These drivers can be downloaded thru any computer and then burned to a separate CD-R for future installation and also for keeping them so you do not have to download them again. There is no specific order that they should be installed in but my own personal preference is in this order:
Chipset Drivers First, Buss Drivers Second, Video Display Drivers Third, Network Drivers Fourth, Audio Drivers Fifth and all others needed afterwards.
Computer Motherboard and Chipset Drivers Found Thru Internet Fixes these are not the Computer Manufacturer drivers.
In the list you might find a BIOS upgrade that has to have a procedure called, “Flashing” done to install this. This should be done with great care if the Flashing is not successful then you will end up with a useless computer and a service call to the manufacturer of the compute... Read more

I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!

A:Compaq Presario CQ40 laptop won't repair or run XP install

Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.

The thing I would like to ask the forum is this:

First of all, i apologise if this is in the wrong section, it seemed to fall into a couple and this seemed the most relevant.

I am thinking of getting a new laptop, a Compaq CQ60-114 to be precise. It comes with vista pre-installed on it, but I really, really, REALLY don't want vista. I want to put my XP on it, but I have heard that the hardware is resistant to XP on some newer models.

Would it be possible to install XP on this machine, with or without a downgrade disk. I have the original XP Pro installation disk as well.

I'm confused about what drivers I have installed on my laptop. I wanted to check if the drivers are compatible with windows 7.

I bought a Razer blade 14 notebook that came with windows 8 and was dissatisfied with it, so I thought I'd try and downgrading from windows 8 (not pro) to windows 7 home premium. I have a windows 7 home premium key and a windows 7 home premium 64bit installation iso file. I'm fairly sure I can figure out how to "burn?"(Not sure if it's the right term) it onto a flash drive and I think I can install 7 using guides, but the problem with most other laptops that I've changed the OS is that once I've installed 7 I don't know which drivers to install. For example, I attempted a clean system reinstallation on another laptop and didn't know what touchpad driver to install, nor did I know what network drivers I needed. I'd like to prevent that problem before installing a new OS on this laptop, and I've looked it up and one of the sites stated the drivers were from all the submenus in Device Manager. But there are tons and most with generic names.

In the downgrade process I've only disabled SecureBoot so far. I still have my Windows 8 up and running.

I guess my main issue is not knowing what drivers to install after windows 7 installation. I apologize for my lack of knowledge of computer OSs and I don't even know if this is the right question to ask nor if this is the proper forum section to post this in.

A:Missing two Drivers after downgrading PC to Win7

Hi AlternativeChao, Welcome to the forums, I can not see the links you have posted, but have you tried going to device manager and right clicking on the offending devices and selecting "update driver" and let win update find the drivers for you ?
Alternatively did you try installing the drivers in compatibility mode ? Did you reinstall the chipset drivers ?

My buddy Kyle recently (actually yesterday) go a new computer that came installed with Vista. He downgraded to XP and now he can't get on the internet or anything, a bunch of drivers aren't working.

Fix? Downgrading is possible, I've seen it done before but I don't remember what to do.

I am also planning to do this on my laptop with vista, and I want to do it without all the driver issues.

Hi, recently I bought HP Pavilion 17-g109ur (17-g100 modification). After installing Windows 7, found all drivers except those for wireless (wi-fi and Bluetooth) connection. Searched using hardware ID (Broadcom) and tried different ones - unsuccessfully. On Broadcom download page, there are only Linux drivers, Here's hardware ID:Wi-fi:PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4365&SUBSYS_804A103C&REV_01PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4365&SUBSYS_804A103CPCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4365&CC_028000PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4365&CC_0280 Bluetooth:BTH\MS_BTHPANBTH\MS_RFCOMM Hope you'll help. Thank you.

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z575 laptop with windows 7 pre installed on it. With the realse of windows 8, I decided to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 8. That was a big mistake; So, I wen't from windows 8 back down to windows 7. I didn't notice this until after I setup my computer but the windows 7 drivers got deleted and they were replaced with nothing. Because this is a Lenovo brand computer, it has a program called onekey recover. So I installed that through a USB becuase the laptop doesn't have a LAN wireless network connection driver on it. And I don't have internet at my house. So anyways, once that was installed, I ran it and it didn't work. Is there anyway I can restore all of my drivers and use the lenovo onekey recovery?

A:Lenovo Ideapad Z575 Upgrading & Downgrading - Mssing Drivers

You will have to download the drivers from Lenovo. Generally, Windows 7 will install many drivers, although it may not install all.

You will have to download all the drivers from Lenovo for the Z525. Start with the video, Sound, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, touchpad, etc.

Once a different OS was installed on the PC, I don't think the Onekey or any recovery partition will work. Only a manual install with a Windows disc and all the drivers.

...more like an upgrade.

So! When I tried to install, I'm getting the infamous "setup does not detect any hard disks" yada yada. I need to find the drivers for this so I can slip stream it into the install, but for the life of me, I cannot find them. I've done it once before so I KNOW they are out there. Heres what I'm working with.
Gateway MT6841 Notebook
Moble 945GM Intel Chipset
Seagate 5400.3 160GB

I'm using a guide on Maximum PC (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How-To--Slipstream-your-XP-installation?page=0,1) to incoorperate the drivers into the install (I've used this guide before...)

If anyone manages to find me the right driver to put in here I would be

a) eternally grateful

I am working on a co-worker's computer. It's a Dell Studio 1537 laptop. We have an XP Pro CD that I'm using to install XP on this Vista machine. I had to go into the BIOS and change from ASHI (I think that's it) to IDE on the hard drive thing or else I got a blue screen with a stop error. So, I did that and now, it will go through the formatting process and say it's copying files and all the things it is supposed to do. However, when it gets to the point of rebooting, the computer goes off, then it comes up to the Dell screen and then goes back off and keeps on repeating the same thing. I've tried change back from IDE in the BIOS and it doesn't do anything. I'm kinda in limbo here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Did you delete and recreate the partition as part of the XP install?

Hi. I have tried to do this twice but both times failed. I have the XP disc and I have used it on my desktop before so it does work. The installation completes and after it is done XP loads and there is this blue screen that appears for like a split second and I am unable to read it and then the PC restarts. Very frustrating. I would really love any help that you can offer me. Toshiba customer support told me that this model only supports Windows VISTA but there has to be a way. Please help me.

My Dell vostro 1510 with 3 gb of ram and a 320 gb hard drive is not downgrading. When i put in my xp CD and goes through the setup, it says it can find my hard drive. Help???

A:Vista not downgrading to XP???

First of all, did you check to see if there are drivers for ALL of your hardware? This is the first thing anyone does when attempting to install xp rather than vista.

If there are not drivers listed on the web site for xp, you are wasting your time.

The reason xp setup does not find the hard drive is that you must load the sata controller driver via the F6 prompt during the first part of setup. Again if this driver is not on the dell site, it is a waste of time.

I have a Dell XPS 720 that I'm trying to downgrade from Vista 32-bit to XP Professional. Downgrade is probably not the right word since both my hard drives have nothing on it at the moment. I have two 250 GB hard drives that are were set up for RAID 0 when I bought the system. I will get back to this later.

This is the problem. I boot up my computer from the Windows XP Professional CD, setup begins, I press F6 to load the drivers. I had a issue where if I did not press F6 and upload the drivers, setup would eventually lead me to the blue screen of death. Anyways, I downloaded the XP SATA nVidia driver and I copied the files to a floppy disk and placed it into my USB external floppy drive. I don't even know if this is the right driver, but it worked none the less. I loaded the drivers and I formatted the unpartitioned space using the NTFS file system. Setup then proceeds to copy some files, yada yada, tells me to remove the boot disk, and it says that the it will reboot in 15 seconds. I'm home free. My dell screen loads. When Windows XP Professional Setup should be loading, It takes me to a black screen where it says that "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information."

I am not sure what my BIOS settin... Read more

I think the problem is lack of drivers. If you have RAID on SATA, you will need drivers for both the raid system and for sata drives. I would guess you have th esatas, but need the raid, as it recognises the disks but not the raid system.
Its quite possible these drivers dont exist, dependingon the age of the sytem. I hate to say it, but trying to put XP on a vista machine is a bad idea. Not because either system is bad, but because of the inherent difficulties in getting xp drivers. It may be you have to get rid of the RAID completely to get anything recognised. I would also say its of the utmost importance you have drivers for EVERY piece of hardweare before you even start a downgrade, otherwise you could find yourself schtuck. There may also be future problems when you find you need an upgrade for a hardware driver, and there arent any being made

i am on the verge of ordering my desktop dell inspiron 531, but it will come with Vista Home Premium. However, I need XP Pro.

I've read some stuff in other forums about 'downgrading' and 'partition' and 'dual boot', but i have no idea what any of that means??!!? i am a bit of a novice (to say the least), but i am scared sh*tless about messing up my desktop when loading XP Pro on there.

i heard that you have to call up Microsoft and get them to 'downgrade' vista, or something like that? can anyone clarify the situation, in simple terms, for a simple guy?

also, when i do load XP Pro, would that mean i would have to reload all the drivers for my hardware again?

A:downgrading from vista to Xp Pro

Dual-Boot is pretty much just using half your hard drives partion space for Vista and the other half for XP ( you can dual boot with different OS but I used XP and Vista for an example ). When you boot your computer up you will have an option to run either XP or Vista.

Looks something like this:

Choose Operation System to Start:

1. Microsoft Windows XP
2. Microsoft Windows Vista
