I just bought a laptop yesterday, Compaq Presario CQ40-340TU. It came with Windows Vista Starter OS. Because of the limitations with networking, I need to install Windows XP on this laptop now. I have my own installer of Windows XP and can't afford to purchase a different version of Windows Vista so that's not an option for me.
I really hope someone can help me find drivers for Windows XP for the following. I'm not even sure if they're the right specifications for my laptop model but I found them on a site selling the same model and from the HP product information page.
I already have nLite and I'm ready to integrate SATA drivers with my WinXP installer but I don't know which drivers to include. Please, help me!

I would really appreciate a response from someone... I haven't enjoyed my new laptop because of the issues with networking. Please help.
I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)
I've already found the WinXP drivers for the graphics adapter and ethernet/NIC.
Basing it on the list of drivers available online for this laptop, the most important driver I need is for the chipset.
Also, for the SATA drivers that I should integrate in my WinXP installer, that I still need to find.
I don't know where to find them. I hope someone here can help me, pretty please.

Hello, I have a HP Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook. Currently, Windows Vista is installed on the notebook. I am planning to upgrade the notebook to Windows 7 Professional Edition. However, when I searched for drivers for Windows 7, I did not find any on HP website. I searched as follows: 1. Visited http://support.hp.com/us-en2. Entered Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook PC in the search box3. Selected Software and Drivers from the left menu4. Clicked Go5. Selected Windows in the Operating system dropdown list6. In the Version dropdown list, I only had two options; Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows Vista (64-bit). Even selecting one of these options displays:No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. Please make a different selection, or visit the product homepage. Please tell me the link for installing drivers for this notebook for Windows 7 Professional Edition. Regards,Aziz
Hi, As you can see, no available link for Windows 7. Please run Windows 7 updates FEW TIMES then post back missing driver(s). Regards.Read other 1 answers

Hi all, this is my first post so here goes:
I've been on the HP so called support forum and have seen many other threads complaining about the same thing as me. I've already downgraded to XP from Vista on my new laptop and only now realise that HP/compaq website have only about 4 drivers available!! I had to do this as some work apps that i use simply woulnd't run on vista. This leaves me with no graphics driver, no wireless driver to name but a few. If anyone can help me with any driver information that would be great as HP seem not to have their act together at all.
Many thanks in advance.
Give these drivers a try:
It seems like the BSOD is chasing me...
This time it's about my own laptop.
Its a Compaq cq40 and It's been acting very strange since a couple of weeks.
Suddenly a BSOD will come up and restar my computer.... but I can still use it...
I'd like to fix it before trying to format the entire disc....
I'm posting the dump files...
Thanks in advance!
It seems like you may have bad memory and reinstalling windows will not fix this issue.
What you should try to do is get a copy of MemTest.
Burn it to a CD and check your RAM. Let it test about 3 times, as if it passed 100% once it may not be an accurate result!
Post back if you need more help or if you are ready to continue.

Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.
I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.
I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.
The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been really tortured with a problem for about a month, with an Acer Aspire 5310, trying to find the proper drivers after downgrading it from Vista to XP. Well, what I got working so far are the Chipset driver and the VGA driver.
None of the sound drivers I've found has worked so far (Sound System: Intel High-Definition audio with MS-Sound compatible (and Dolby Digital Live)). I also have exclamation points in the Device Manager menu:
all under the heading "Other Devices": Ethernet Controller, Network Controller, Flash PCI Memory
and one under the heading "System Devices": PCI Device
I've been searching a lot, red about similar problems that other people had but yet no solution. I don't know what I do wrong or where else to search...
Do u know any link for what I really need? Or could u tell me the steps I should follow to fix this kind of mess? Please let me know as soon as possible, I will really appreciate it...

Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!
If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.Read other 1 answers

So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at www.hp.com.cn)
Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!
How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.
Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.
NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.

Welcome to TSF....
Since there has been a clean installation of Windows there are special drivers that have to be installed in order for the computer to run and function properly the drivers that are from the different manufacturers for their devices can be installed after these are. The special drivers like chipset, buss, network, audio, video and others, can be found on the Recovery Disk Set that comes with the computer or on-line in the Support area usually under Drivers and Downloads area [if it is an OEM like Compaq, Dell etc. or found on the motherboard manufacturers site for the computer. These drivers can be downloaded thru any computer and then burned to a separate CD-R for future installation and also for keeping them so you do not have to download them again. There is no specific order that they should be installed in but my own personal preference is in this order:
Chipset Drivers First, Buss Drivers Second, Video Display Drivers Third, Network Drivers Fourth, Audio Drivers Fifth and all others needed afterwards.
Computer Motherboard and Chipset Drivers Found Thru Internet Fixes these are not the Computer Manufacturer drivers.
In the list you might find a BIOS upgrade that has to have a procedure called, “Flashing” done to install this. This should be done with great care if the Flashing is not successful then you will end up with a useless computer and a service call to the manufacturer of the compute... Read more
I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!
Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.
Pardon me if my problem sounds little funny.
I have Compaq Presario CQ40, windows 7 laptop.3GB RAM,320 GB Hard Disk.
Since past few days i m facing this problem, whenever i put on my laptop, and when the desktop opens, my laptop hangs in another 1 or 2 minutes. i have tried this around 5-6 times and still there isn't any improvement. i have also tried to set my computer to an earlier restore point, and have done this twice, still no improvement.
Shall i run recovery, i m afraid of data loss.
Can any 1 guide me what could be the cause, and what could be the solution.

You can check your HP/compaq PC here:

If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.

I have just got a Compaq Presario CQ50-215NR which, I am sure you know, comes with Vista installed on it. When I plug my Skype in via USB port minimal sound can be heard, as can through headphone speskers when plugged in. The media player handles a CD with similar result.
When I look at the volume indicator in the bottom right tray, it indicates fluctuating levels maybe 3 - 6%, despite the control being at 100.

Hi AlternativeChao, Welcome to the forums, I can not see the links you have posted, but have you tried going to device manager and right clicking on the offending devices and selecting "update driver" and let win update find the drivers for you ?
Alternatively did you try installing the drivers in compatibility mode ? Did you reinstall the chipset drivers ?
I'm confused about what drivers I have installed on my laptop. I wanted to check if the drivers are compatible with windows 7.
I bought a Razer blade 14 notebook that came with windows 8 and was dissatisfied with it, so I thought I'd try and downgrading from windows 8 (not pro) to windows 7 home premium. I have a windows 7 home premium key and a windows 7 home premium 64bit installation iso file. I'm fairly sure I can figure out how to "burn?"(Not sure if it's the right term) it onto a flash drive and I think I can install 7 using guides, but the problem with most other laptops that I've changed the OS is that once I've installed 7 I don't know which drivers to install. For example, I attempted a clean system reinstallation on another laptop and didn't know what touchpad driver to install, nor did I know what network drivers I needed. I'd like to prevent that problem before installing a new OS on this laptop, and I've looked it up and one of the sites stated the drivers were from all the submenus in Device Manager. But there are tons and most with generic names.
In the downgrade process I've only disabled SecureBoot so far. I still have my Windows 8 up and running.
I guess my main issue is not knowing what drivers to install after windows 7 installation. I apologize for my lack of knowledge of computer OSs and I don't even know if this is the right question to ask nor if this is the proper forum section to post this in.
I won't be replying for a few hou... Read more

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z575 laptop with windows 7 pre installed on it. With the realse of windows 8, I decided to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 8. That was a big mistake; So, I wen't from windows 8 back down to windows 7. I didn't notice this until after I setup my computer but the windows 7 drivers got deleted and they were replaced with nothing. Because this is a Lenovo brand computer, it has a program called onekey recover. So I installed that through a USB becuase the laptop doesn't have a LAN wireless network connection driver on it. And I don't have internet at my house. So anyways, once that was installed, I ran it and it didn't work. Is there anyway I can restore all of my drivers and use the lenovo onekey recovery?
You will have to download the drivers from Lenovo. Generally, Windows 7 will install many drivers, although it may not install all.
You will have to download all the drivers from Lenovo for the Z525. Start with the video, Sound, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, touchpad, etc.
Once a different OS was installed on the PC, I don't think the Onekey or any recovery partition will work. Only a manual install with a Windows disc and all the drivers.

Hello, I've tried everything and I don't know what to do!
My HP Model is m8530f
AMD Phenom(tm) 9550 Quad-Core Processor 2.20 GHz
64-bit Operating System
NVIDIA GeForce 9300 GE
How can I downgrade from Vista to XP? @_@
And please no posts about why I want to, I just do.
first go to hp and see if they have xp drivers for your specific model. If not you will have to do some major searching to find them. IMO, if hp does not have them, then its best not downgrade.
Then you need a full retail version of xp. You cannot legally use oem xp or xp that came with another system.
sorry if this is a repost. but i really need some help. i downloaded vista and installed it. after the first day, as nice as it looks, i hate it already. why did i 'upgrade' to vista? cuz i stupidly listened to what my cousin said about it and now im screwed. the amount of memory each process uses in vista is unbelievable. sure i can handle any program, but when it comes to my games, it slows down, ALOT. please, help
now, due to my stupidity, i will be willing to accept my punishment and i will be willing to reformat my pc if its nessesary(and im pretty sure it is. i already started to back up my most importent files). all i ask if you guys can kind enough to supply me with some help and tips on what to do. please, help!
Hello eddie291, and Welcome to TSF,
Unfortunately you cannot 'downgrade' back to Xp once you have installed Windows Vista ?.
The only thing that you can do now is to copy ALL of your important data to disc/s DVD's etc., and format the drive and start from scratch with a 'clean' install of Xp.
Sorry to be the bearer of these bad tidings, but Microsoft stated that in all their guff regarding the installation of Vista...I have Vista installed on a completely separate drive to my XP installation; thus, preventing what you are about to go through.
Good Luck with it, and if you have any hassles post back.
But post back anyway once you're back "on air" with Xp.
I need help downgrading my windows vista XP. I've tried everything I could think of, next to actually spending money on a new Mobo. I just bought this system. It's a Dell E520.
I have the XP CD and the Vista CD. The computer works with Windows Vista installed. I tried sticking in the CD with windows XP in it so i could go to the recovery console and format vista but I got BSOD. So i moved the hard drive to another computer, ran the XP CD and reformatted the hard drive. I installed XP onto it. I stuck the hard drive back into the originally PC, and right after the loading screen/right before the user account selection screen, I get the BSOD error again about windows shutting down to protect my computer. It's making me slightly angry, I've changed about everything that might make any difference in the BIOS and now, I've resorted to help from an outside source, this forum, and the dell forum, but they take a long time to reply, so i came here, I hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

Hey all. I hope I'm posting this in the right forum; if not, feel free to move it wherever it needs to be.
Now, bear with me, because I'm really not as much of a moron as this post might make me out to be!
I have a Gateway T-1413h notebook that came pre-installed with Vista. I have discs that allow me to restore the computer to its factory default settings if I need (or want) to, and I also have a backup disc with all the necessary default drivers for the computer.
I'm really not into Vista, for a number of reasons, and would really like to just go back to XP. My question is: Would the process be any different on a machine that came pre-installed with Vista? I've only dealt in the past with computers that came "as is", with no OS installed at all. Would it just be as easy as putting my XP installation disc in and letting it run? And then, what about the driver files? Would they still work with XP, I wonder?
Also: Let's say for argument's sake that downgrading to XP wouldn't be a problem. Is there a way to do it so that I'm just installing the OS, without doing a total wipe of my hard drive? I hate having to back everything up and basically start over again. Or...here's another question, although this is something I've never done before. Would it be possible to set up another partition on the hard drive and set up XP on that one, basically running two OS on the same machine?

Downgrading Vista to XP
So here is the story I have pc that came loaded with windows xp home edition,So i bought Windows Vista and upgraded home edition,After few months certain programs wouldn't work so i decide to downgrade back to xp but i couldn't since it was pre-install,So dell sent me a windows xp cd,its reinstallation dvd but i can't reinstall or maybe i am doing it wrong, how do i get back windows xp
please help me as vista has given me too many problems recently
thanks in advance and merry christmas
Well, there seem to be two factors that I would consider.
a. Not sure if a reinstall/recovery CD relies upon an existing XP install.
b. Not sure if same would work on a bare hard drive (unformatted, no O/S).
As for using the reinstall media...the Dell site should provide instructions on how to use same. I would have thought such would have been included with the media.
I'm new here please bear with me.
I was going to downgrade vista to Xp profession, and i did the same as suggested on Hp website forum for downgrading (HP compaq presario B1200).
and someone wrote there for driver issues they can be downloaded from here "http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3764978&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3764975&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093"
they will work with B1200 and I did the same all driver are working except graphics, while installing graphic driver it shows a message"your system does not meet minimum requirment to install driver". now my Xp is running in the center of display other part is black like a frame.
could some one please help me out.
The reason why your screen looks like that is because the system is missing the video adapter driver. If the manufacturer has not released a XP driver, then you'll have to go back to the original operating system (Vista). Many of the OEMs including HP are not making (or rather not developing XP version) drivers for their newer systems.
I suggest you get used to using Windows Vista. Windows 7 is just around the corner (release date in October) and it's very similar to Vista in look & feel.
Hi. I have tried to do this twice but both times failed. I have the XP disc and I have used it on my desktop before so it does work. The installation completes and after it is done XP loads and there is this blue screen that appears for like a split second and I am unable to read it and then the PC restarts. Very frustrating. I would really love any help that you can offer me. Toshiba customer support told me that this model only supports Windows VISTA but there has to be a way. Please help me.
