Vista not playing any music files, plays online music perfectly

Q: Vista not playing any music files, plays online music perfectly

I apologize if this has already been addressed. I honestly don't know what I'm doing. My Vista's not playing any of the music files on my computer or my iPod on any music player I use (iTunes, WinAmp, the Rhapsody that came with it), though it plays anything else that's online. Other sounds on the computer are also playing (MSN, AIM, system sounds). What it does exactly is, upon clicking any song in the media library, it shows intention to play it but then stays at 0:00, while recognizing the length of song, name of artist, etc. Did I miss something?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'd delete my old topic if I could, but apparently I got a few things wrong. >_> Mod Edit: A Staff member deleted it for you ~ Hamluis.Anyways, I just got a new hard drive and motherboard for my computer today. I found that the green port doesn't work for whatever reason (and I'm not bothered by it unless it could fix this problem) so I managed to get the blue port to work by changing the settings to quadraphonic. Now that I've done that, my music player works, as does the test sound on SoundMax. However, everything else (Youtube, other internet stuff, any of my computer games) doesn't work. Looked around for a bit, nothing I found seemed to point to why.

Hey! My comp can play music but when I play DVDs or run .avis I only get background music and the vocal audio is so low it's almost muted. I can't figure it out. I have DivX installed and AC3Filter as well but I use WMP and Cyberlink PowerDVD, no vocals from either. Do I need codecs? How do I find out which I need?

A:Music Plays / No Vocals in Movies / Background Music Plays

I've been able to boost sound with the AC3Filter and get DVD vocals now through WMP but I still am not getting any vocals from my DVDs when played through my Cyberlink PowerDVD. Any suggestions? I'm sure I'm missing a codec or something but I can't figure out what. The website I used to go to to download audio codecs for WMP11 looks down for the count so I'm at a loss.

So, here's my issue. I have Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5500 speakers. I originally had them connected to my computer via a single line. So, I took the inputs from the speakers' console and directly connected everything to my computer. Now, I have surround sound (Wahoo!). But, the subwoofer only works when I'm configuring through the Control Panel. But, when I play music, I get zero sound from it.

Also, I have to set the properties in Sound to 7.1 to get all 5 speakers working. And the sub still works when running the test in 7.1 too. I've gone through every program that I can find on my computer that relates to sound and have set everything to 5.1 for now. I don't understand why I don't have sound from my subwoofer.

A:Subwoofer plays when configuring sound, but not when playing music.

Hi ruste84,

Since the speakers are producing 'surround sound' while configuration, it appears that the 'audio track' that you are trying to listen to is a standard '2 channel audio file'. You may try a digitally encoded 'surround sound audio' (a retail DVD with known 5.1 audio) to check if the 'speakers' work as desired.

If the issue persists, please confirm that the physical connections of the 'speakers' are setup properly. For reference, you may want to have a look at the recommended 'setup' for the motherboard installed 'ASUS Crosshair IV Formula'.
Also use the 'X-Fi CMSS-3D Panel' to configure 3D virtual surround effects. (Reference image below)
Hope this helps. Do reply with the findings.

Hi all,

Strange one here...

I've been using my cd drive ever since I got the poota to listen to music, burn music, burn files etc etc ... today started up the poota, put in a music cd, great, about half hour later took out the music cd put in a blank cd-rw to go burn something as normal, but I got the message 'd is not accessible, incorrect function' ... tried a few other cd-rw's, no joy.

Tried another cd-rw with files on, nothing, same message...

But it happily recognises music cd's, just not blank cd's or cd's with normal files on...

The other strange thing is when I put the CD-rw's in, the icon of the d drive changes to say cd-rw ... but I still get this bloody error message!

Anyone offer some help???

I've no idea what I did, but I turned off the poota, tried and but the problem was still there .... decided to uninstall and reinstall my burning software (grabbing at straws) ... and voila! ... for some reason it now works again ....

Please help. This is my first post and I am not the most computer savy person, so please if my edicit is wrong or more info is need just let me know.

I have a GatewayGT5662 with Windows Vista and Windows Media Player 11. I use it to listen to music or watch downloaded movies or what not. I also use it to stream my digital media to my PS3 to listen to or watch in my living room. Then one day it just doesn't play my music files any more!! It still plays all video files just fine, but any time I try to play a music file it says:

An audio codec is needed to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help.

I have the CCCP codec pack installed on my computer and have never had any troubles, I updated that pack and tried installing the klite pack as well but those don't seem to help. I really don't think it is a codec problem. Most of my music on my computer is from c.d.s though I have some that are downloads. Itunes plays my music library just fine, but won't stream to the PS3. Most of the music files are MP3's.

I've recently have began having problems with BSODs. On occasion now, i get these unexpected blue screens whenever i'm playing League of Legends, or just relaxing to some music. I haven't been able to pinpoint the possible specific driver responsible, and i have updated my graphics drivers but to no avail. Hopefully you guys can help me out here. Thanks .Each bluescreen i've had all had the description IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Bugcheck code 0x0000000a. I've run the windows memory diagnostic for 7 passes around 3 times, all with no errors. I've ran Norton NPE, Norton system scans, and Malwarebytes scans as well. No viruses or malware either.

A:HELP! music is playing in the background but no music program is open!

Are you close to a radio station's transmitter site and antenna? That sounds like "RFI" (Radio Frequency Interference" getting into your speaker system.

When you get it, unplug the speakers from the PC but leave them powered on and the volume up and see if you still get it. If you do it's RFI and the speaker system is picking it up or it's coming through the AC power line to the speakers. If this just started I would suspect either a bad cable ground or just a dirty plug connection somewhere in the system.

I am not sure if the title accurately tells what my issue is. I hope I can explain it.

When listening to music on my PC, it does not matter if I use Winamp, Songbird, Quicktime, Windows Media Player, or any other software. Every so often, there appears some sort of distortion, like the drive that the music is on slows down. I dont know if it is the driver or what. Its hard to explain. You have to hear it. I dont think its the mp3 file itself, cause I could play a song and it will be perfect, but then the next time I play it, it will distort. It is really driving my nuts cause I can't find the reason for it.

Anybody out here got any ideas? even crazy ones? Thanks.

So I searched around for a bit and found a few discussions about the Music app crashing, but none appear to be the problem I'm having. I can open the app and do most things in it. Search, navigate around, I can even play music most of the time except for one notable exception. When you click on an artist or album, the app opens a smaller window in the middle of the app where you can usually play the song, along with a few other options (like Play Top Songs or Explore Artist. Whenever I click play from this window, the app suddenly closes. This does not happen with music that I have files locally on my hard drive, it only happens with streaming music. I can get streaming music to play as long as I can find a play button elsewhere in the app aside from this window that pops up in the middle of the screen. But if a song is already playing, I can skip back and forth and navigate around the app. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app and this fixes it for a little while, but it eventually begins happening again. It crashes with zero other apps or programs running. I have AVG antivirus running, but I disabled that for a while and it still crashes. I noticed that when it does crash, the Music app doesn't close completely as it's still listed along with other running apps if I hover in the upper left corner and drag my mouse down to view all running apps.

Hello, still attempting to find my way around this infernal thing (sorry my Computer). Does anyone know of a free media Player download, which asks me, after I have selected a music file, "would you like ????? media player to convert this file in order to play it". I ask this because I don't know one music file from another. Your help, as always will be very much appreciated. nor69

A:Playing various music files

Hi nor69,

Most audio players will simply play a music file in any normal format.
You would be interested in the format if you were downloading the song from the net. A compressed music file (mp3, etc.) will be much smaller than the original WAV format of the same file and would therefore download faster. Both the mp3 and WAV version of the same music file will play in music players.

I personally use Winamp which can be downloaded from many places on the net. It was free and probably still is.

Most folks just use the windows media player which will handle music and video.

If you are wanting to make a music CD that will work in your car player, then you will be interested in converting the music files to WAV format.

Hope this sheds a little light for you.

Best regards,

I posted this in the HJT Logs thread and they told me that it wasn't a malware issue, but to check on the Vista support thread.

I've seen both Ascentive and Viewpoint Media Player on malware lists and had both installed on my computer (both were removed via Revo Uninstaller). VMP is completely gone, but after I ran Ascentive through Revo Uninstaller, a file called "GUID" showed up. When I tried deleting the GUID file, it basically told me "access denied."

The main thing I've noticed going wrong is that none of my music files work anymore...it gives me an error message saying: Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

If any reference to my old thread is needed, check here: hxxp://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/hijackthis-log-help/292757-ascentive-viewpoint-media-player.html#post1708716

We have about 15 Pcs (WIN XP) in our warehouse and all of then have TFT screens with speakers in it. I am looking for a kind of program to:

1) Play Music files on every pC (all the same music together)
2) Play special music files (MP3 files) at certain hours. For example to tell them that it is almost lunchtime, or time to go home,.....

All this must be controlled from one PC.

Is this possible? Does such software exist?

Any idea/help is welcome!

I had recently replaced my HDD with SSD,
So I had backed up & erased all the personal files including music, videos etc from respective folders,
Actually there is no files other than system files, programs, softwares in the SSD now,
I had done disk cleanup, defrag , clearing of temp, prefetch folders etc before starting the cloning everything from HDD to SSD,

After replacement, now I could see all my collection of songs/music in the Now Playing section of Music App (Modern app),
No music files are actually present for me to locate in any of the folders when I go through for explorer,

I'm not able to play the music files by clicking it from Music App , &
when i delete it from there by right clicking it - temporarily goes away but returns when i close the App and opens it again..

I had unchecked & checked the indexing option in the Music folder (File Explorer) - properties & restarted system, checked, But still all the music files are listed in the App,

Could anyone suggest on how to clear the music file listings from the Music app permanently which are not really present in the system?

A:Music App lists music files not present in SSD :(

Try to right click and un-install it. Then install it again from the store. Hopefully that will clear it out.

I have never seen a computer go into either mode with active processes. Also, is the device USB? If USB, did you safely remove it before unplugging it? Try it, Vista will think its still attached but not working right.

The music files are local on my hard drive. It's driving me crazy....and I'm not a sophisticated computer user. Help. Thank you.

I have a network drive (Maxtor 300gb III) which is USB connected to a Linksys 350 Router (Wireless N w/ Storage Link). I have an admin (w/ Password) and user (no psswd) accounts setup. I can play the music I have stored on that drive from an XP machine, but not from Vista! It tells me the file is missing or drive is no longer available, which I KNOW is not correct. Does Vista block the network use of these files? I can play this music just fine if thru iTunes when directed to T(network drive):\itunes (so the media is playing from the network drive, not downloaded to the C: drive). This is music I have burned from CDs, and I have reburned a few just to validate their digital useage "rights." I play this media throughout my house thru different systems, I do not want it to be only available when connected to my vista box, (this same music plays without issue when USB connected directly to the Vista Box.

Your notes on the Admin issues when connecting to network shared drives resolved my initial issue, which was being able to log into the network share using the admin account.

Windows will crash to BSOD after about 10-15 minutes of playing a game, listening to music, or watching video. This started happening about a month ago. Up until then everything was fine. I though I found some people with the same problem when I search on Google, but updating their BIOS fixed their problem, it didn't fix mine.

I have updated all of the drivers I could think of and flashed my BIOS to the newest version on the ECS website (I have an ECS KA3 MVP motherboard). This didn't fix the problem. I also made sure I downloaded the Vista driver from Nvidia for my graphics card. I have also run a Memtest and had not errors, and I ran a video card stability test and everything was fine (didn’t even crash). I checked all of the temperatures on the restart and they are all in normal operating range. Here is what the BSOD says everytime.

i just upgraded my PC to Vista Ultimate SP1 and whenver i play music or some video files, the sound "skips". i don't know how to describe it, but it like pauses for half a sec with a skipping sound then plays again, like if the cpu usage is at 100%, but that's not what's causing it. Nothing like this happened in XP, just started. it happens ever so often. i've search the internet for for about an hour yesterday with no avail. I have a intergrated SoundMax digital audio card. I've tried reinstalling the audio drivers, check DMA settings on both my HD's, tried various media players etc. my sound card doesn't have those "Enhancements" that i read about. People were able to solve their problem by disabling them. I also don't have a wireless network card. I tried to see if maybe the activity on the HD was causing the issue, but couldn't make a connection. I tried moving program windows around rapidly but that didn't cause the skipping to occur. i'm at a loss here. any help much appreciated.

A:Random Music plays while

Read other 7 answers

I hope that this is in the right section. It may not even be a computer problem since the problem is solved when the computer is relocated, however I could sure use a suggestion on who might have an answer.

When I play any music, whether stored on the HD, play a commercial music CD or a home burned CD, at some point about 30 seconds into the music, it takes a 1/2 second long stutter followed by a very short slow-down (much like dragging your finger on a vinyl record as it plays), then the music plays normally for maybe 1 minute or so. The periods between the stuttering is random.

Now, I have 6 computers in my office network. This is happening on every PC in the offices. To test the possibilities, I burned a fresh CD and played it on every PC. The stuttering took place as usual, randomly, each time it was played. I took it out to my car and played it. There was no stuttering.

I packed up my PC and took it home to my home office. I set it up and played music again. There was no stuttering. Music from the HD, commercial CD and my home-burns all played fine.

The only variable here is the electricity. Each PC is plugged into a UPS unit so I suspect the lines are clean coming in. I know electricity can be dirty, but I've talked to two expert electricians and they have both looked at me like I was nuts. They think that this is not an electrical problem. So here I am, in that impossible spot, with a problem that just defies all logic. There must be an answer...

I know this sounds odd but you dont have roadworks or any building work near you by any chance? I had a wierd problem like this when there was a lot of groundwork being done outside my house. As soon as the builders packed up and left it was fine.

Hi, I am new to the forum and Windows 8.

I have a question regarding a new build I have. I am running windows 8 off of a SSD, and have a new HDD that I bought for everything else. I recently transferred my music over from an external HD and now when I attempt to find them in my Xbox app I can't seem to select that drive. It only sees my SSD, and I do not want to install music on that

How do I make it so my apps pull files right from that drive?

Thanks in advance.

I wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this but if not, I'm sure someone will let me know!

I have a lot of music files on my hard drive and because they have come from so many sources over the last few years their file names are inconsistent. I'd like all of the music files to be in the same format in the My Music folder itself and not just in an application such as Win Amp where I can tag the music.

It's driving me crazy (I know it shouldn't!!!) and I am really not interested in changing each one seperately . . .

I know there has to be a program (hopefully, free!) that can do this easily. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks so much.

A:Organizing Music Files In My Music

Hi, that's always been a problem of mine until I decided to act. I didn't use a program - I spent a whole day renaming, retagging, organizing the files. If you have a program like iTunes which has a music library feature, filenames shouldn't be a problem, but if you're paranoid about filenames(like me), I suggest you do it manually. Delete all entries of the music library(if your player has one), but DON'T DELETE THE FILES. Making subfolders in My Music (ex. by artist, by genre, etc) should help. Once you've renamed everything, re-transfer them to your music library. Done!

I run Vista on my computer. A friend of mine sent me an email containing .cda files which have some music recoded on them, music from our band practice. I've tried to open the cda's in Media Player and it doesn't work. I'm wanting to open the cda's, put them in media player, and make a music CD for practice. Will Vista open cda files that come in emails? If so, what do I need to do? Can someone help me with this, I'm wanting to listen to the recorded "band practice" and add it to a CD. I hope this info makes sense. Help is appreciated...thanks.

A:cda music files and Vista...

The first thing you must know is .CDA files are not audio files, they are just a way that Windows uses to let you access an Audio CD indexhttp://www.freerip.com/frmmanual/tutorials...iles_to_mp3.php

I am actually having the exact same issue. My system was infected 5 days ago, and all my files were 'deleted' and after I ran Malwarebytes, I got them all back... and Malwarebytes said it removed a malware called MyWebsearch and FunWebProducts.

BUT now my internet explorer still opens up in the background and starts playing music.

Eventually Malwarebytes detects this and stops it and a pop up message says "Malwarebytes stopped iexplorer.exe from going to a malicious site."

I ran HijackThis just now and this is the log I got:
