I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

last night my computer froze and i had to shut it down holding the power button. since then when i have tried to turn it on, it first looks like its gonna load, but then goes to the screen w/ the 3 safe mode options to start in, and to start in windows normally. the arrow keys will not work for me, so i cant get to safe mode and dont know how. after it waits for 30 seconds, it will start in normal mode, and go the the screen where it looks like its gonna load, the "Windows XP Professional" screen, where there is the time bar thing (not sure what thats called). once it is there, the screen will turn black and then restart and go back to the startup page w/ the safe mode options and normal mode option. rinse and repeat. i dont know what to do and any help will be appreciated. thanks!

A:Computer Starts And Goes To Boot Screen But Wont Start Up

If using keys at boot won't work and XP can't start then you could try using you XP installation disk to boot windows or try a linux OS on a dvd. If you still can't get it to go then try a repair install off the XP disk. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If this is the wrong forum, where does this go???
Last week I started up my computer and right before the logon screen was supposed to show up, it just restarted. (I guess it was a blue screen?) It told me that Windows failed to start the last time and it asked me if I wanted to use Startup Repair. Since I had nothing to lose, I just went ahead. So then it kept saying "Your computer was unable to start" and it asked me if I wanted to do system restore, but I thought that would be useless, as half of the time System Restore in Windows Recovery Environment doesn't work for me!!1 It really wasn't doing anything, so I just went ahead and turned the computer off. So when I started it up, instead of Starting Windows, I see the Windows Vista boot screen. Oddly enough, it's faster than the normal boot screen. Now, before anyone asks me if anything related to Vista is on my computer, the answer to that question is no. All I really want to know is how to restore it back to the Windows 7 boot screen. I tried bcdedit /set {current} locale en-US, but that didn't work. I would have tried bcdboot %WinDir% /l en-US, but I didn't want to run into any problems.

Are there any other ways to fix this? Not that it's a problem or anything, it just looks... wrong.

Thank you in advance for any answers.

If you ask if I'm able to start my computer now, the answer to that is yes.

Hello there,
It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.
Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:
1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.
4. Accept the Windows license agreement.
5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.
6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.
7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

Have you tried a different monitor, al though you say it works on your friends you also say it's intermittent, it could simply be that the monitor is faulty and moving it cures the problem.

My computer freezes many times when ill start it up and get to desktop. It wont take any commands after starting and ill have to shut it down by turning power off. It seems that when ill start my computer in safe mode and then ill restart and go back to normal mode it works normally. All these began after 2 latest updates.

A:Computer freezes to desktop when it starts and wont shut down.

tuplad89, Welcome to Seven Forums. This is not my area of expertise, but I would suggest, starting in normal mode. Hold down the windows key(the one with the flag on it) and push the "R" key. It will bring up a dialogue box. type msconfig in the box and go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything there except your anti virus program, you will be prompted to reboot. Do so. Reboot even if not pompted. after reboot go back and make sure everything is still unchecked. See if you notice a difference in your issue.

Next press the start button and open an elevated command prompt ( Start-type cmd in the search boz, right click the cmd entry there and select run as administrator) In that window that appears type/copy-paste sfc /scannow If you decide to type it notice the space between the SFC and the /. If it says it found no integrity issues, type exit and let us know. If it says it found problems it couldn't fix, exit and restart the computer. Do the same thing again run scannow again. reboot. Keep doing that for 3 or 4 times until you get found no integrity violations. It is scanning system files looking for corrupted or missing files and trying to replace/repair them. It may take up to 3 times with reboots in between.

Please let us know the results of those things.

Trying to format/install XP on my spare machine which currently has Fedora Core on it. I made sure BIOS had CDROM first. Stuck in the CD, rebooted. Once I press the "hit any key to boot from cd"..

Instead of going to the blue screen where it loads the stuff, the screen just goes black - and nothing ever shows.

Ive tried this with both CDROM drives.

A:computer wont boot to windows

It looks like the boot sector of your hard disk is erased or damaged. Since you did try to reinstall windows and you couldn't because the disk couldn't be formated, you should do a scan disk in a preinstallation environment like Windows PE. Of course, for that, you will need more specialized tools, which I'm assuming you don't have and don't know how to obtain. Lets see if others have better solutions.

I turn on my computer fine and the Windows XP boot comes up. After that the whole screen goes blank and there is nothing that I can do about it. I just tried to reconfigure my display to use the right resoultion for my new monitor. It came with software to run the moitor at optimum preformance and what not. I put in the disc and the autoplay on the disc never engaged so I opened up my computer and tried to get it to start from there. No luck. I tried opening up each individual driver and all that from the cd. I got to one called "true color" or something like that ( I dont really remember sorry) and installed it on my computer. I promped a restart and everything was going fine until the screen went blank after the windows xp boot screen. I've checked the internals of my computer and everying thing is ok. I've also tried using my old monitor only to get the same black screen. Any suggestions on how to fix would be greatly appreciated.

Computer wont boot from CD for Windows XP re-install.

Hi, had been planning on re-formatting the hard drive for some time, then got a ?security hoax? virus so that pushed he to do my re-install. Problem is, my computer won?t boot form the CD drive. I?ve got a Dell Dimension 3000. Here?s what I?ve done.

First, I ran several malware programs to seek and destroy the virus. Then?the disc is an original Windows XP re-install disc. When placed in the drive, it does recognize it, and starts the program. I select re-install the operating system and it states no can do because you are attempting to install XP service pack 1 and your running service pack 3. The drive appears to be working properly.

I re-start, and it boots from the hard drive (never prompts me to press any key to boot from disc). Next I enter the BIOS set up and set the boot sequence to boot from CD first. The computer still starts from the hard drive. I next tried setting it to only boot from CD not hard drive and I just get ?F1 try again, F2 enter BIOS?. I keep playing with the settings and have gotten the prompt ?press any key to boot from CD but when I do so, nothing happens except it goes to the hard drive and starts up.

I had two disc drives so I dis-connected the slave and made sure the remaining drive is set as master. I also tried physically dis-connecting the hard drive and tried booting from disk but kept getting the F1 F2 prompt.

I don?t think I ever updated my BIOS and read that as a suggestion, but... Read more

Earlier this evening, windows surprised me by restarting to preform a windows update. I went to go do something else for half hour or so, and when I came back I saw the startup repair was running.
On startup right after the windows logo come up, I get blue screen with error PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED 0x0000006B.
Same thing on safe mode and "last successful boot config."
All of my restore points failed, and startup repair fails.
Checkdisk says no problems found, and SFC finds corrupt files and repairs them every time I run it, but the blue screen still comes up.
I tried using the widows 7 recovery disk but that failed too.
I have done a LOT of reading on the subject and based on the evidence, believe this is due to corruption of ntdll.dll in system32.
There was a forum thread where it was suggested I replace this file from the same version of windows followed by many replies from users who were able to successfully fix their issue this way. When I try to copy the clean version of ntdll.dll into my system using the recovery console, however, I the the error

I suspect this means some process is using the file or something like that. Somehow, other people were able to get it to work.

I have bought a new PC with an intel q6700 chip, 4 gigs of ram and a terrabyte of storage. When I restarted my computer my machine started making a loud beeping noise repeatedly and not going through the beeping process. I cannot get to the bios stage or boot from disc. Has anyone any ideas what may have caused this?

A:Computer wont boot after installing windows XP SP2

Does the screen show anything when you turn the computer on ? If it does then tell us what's the last message you see. If not then it's probably some hardware problem. Turn the computer off, unplug the power cable and open the computer case. Remember to touch a metal part of the case to discharge your own electricity before you touch any internal component. Check that the cpu heatsink is correctly seated and doesn't move at all. Take the memory sticks out and leave only one in the first slot (closer to the CPU). Check that the video card is correctly seated. Turn the computer on and check that all the fans are spinning.

This guide may help :

What are the complete specs of this computer ? What's the power supply brand, model and wattage ? Check the sticker that's on the side of the power supply block.

I have a peculiar problem. My desktop starts but does not boot. I know that power is coming to the system because my fans come on, my neons come on, etc. However, the computer does not even begin the bios process; it just sits there. Obviously nothing appears on my screen so at first I thought it was the video card but I realized that I was no longer receiving systems beeps for start up, recognizing master and slave, etc. Also, the numlock key was not coming on automatically (and will not turn on even if I press it, even if I let the "boot process" go for 10 minutes). I am thinking it is a bios issue so I removed and reinserted the bios battery in order to try and reset it but to no avail.

Any suggestions?

I don't think there is any problem with config. Because I have been using this computer with same specs for 2 years. Today morning it suddenly stopped working.

On Tuesday morning, I was using my computer when it froze. Ctrl+Alt+Del wouldn't work, so I did a manual shutdown and restarted it. But it wouldn't boot up. I've tried the following:

1. Unplugging the power source and holding the power button in for 1 minute, in order to rule out a static electricity problem.
2. Unplugged the monitor to see if it was dead; it wasn't.
3. Disconnected everything except for the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

I've tried to restart it multiple times in hopes of getting it to work one last time so that I could retrieve my data (MP3s, photos, etc.), but to no avail. At times, the power button glows green, and other times it's orange.

Any suggestions? Also, I have a working laptop. Is there a program I can use to get into the hard drives, or is that completely impossible? Any help is appreciated.

I said well she either touched some setting or some issues with the boot file etc. I went over thinking i'll just boot to install CD and either repair or worst case senerio reformat. No biggie. I get there and just turn it on to see what happen. Bios load windows starts and I get the windows logo with the starting windows and it just stays there. I said well lets try a repair. I insert the disk press F12 boot from disk, I get the touch any key I press it and it just goes back to the starting windows screen stuck.

Hmm. I said well lets boot into safe mode and see if I can do something through there. Press F8 select safe mode and boom I get all that stuff across the screen like its the matrix and then it just stay stuck there. Nothing..

I started thinking and then said 'I'll show you!!" Made a Ultimate boot CD and wiped the drive. If the laptop is not new, you might try re-seating the memory module(s) by removing/ reinserting them several times. Same for any connectors you are able to reach (HDD, etc)... this is to help dislodge possible corrosion or other crud on the connections.

Hello all,
My computer will not boot (until after numerous tries); when I turn it on, you can hear the fans and hard drives as if the computer was starting up, but the monitor stays black and says, "no input detected." My PS2 keyboard seems to effect whether it starts up - if it's plugged in during boot up, sometimes the fans and hard drives will automatically shut off after a second or two. Other times, it's as though I need my keyboard plugged in and my USB mouse unplugged. I've heard that PS2 ports die after so much use, and I tried replacing my keyboard with a USB keyboard, but the computer still did not start up (not until I plugged in my PS2 keyboard). Also, I previously suspected that my motherboard had a blown capacitor due to a high-pitched whine that my computer would make (and it would make this only when I had something plugged into a PS2 port). However, this noise has been long gone and I never found a capacitor that looked as though it was blown. So what could possibly be the problem?

Thanks a bunch

A:computer starts, fails to boot

I would check your video card, make sure the monitor cable is completely plugged in otherwise try reseating the video card.

I run Vista Home Premium and am having the same problem. Removed RAM sticks and re-inserted...seemed to work for a while. A few times has come up with
Warning!!!The previous performance of overclocking is failed, and the system is restored to the default setting,
Press any key except "DEL" to enter SETUP.
Do that and it boots and works for a few days...then probs again.

A:Computer starts to boot up then shuts off.

Do not hijack someone else's thread. I have moved you to your own thread.
Boot into Setup (Bios) and if you tried overclocking, reverse it, set the Bios to Defaults.
Other then that, shutting down means it's either overheating or the Power Supply Unit is failing. Blow out all fans with compressed air, when you start the computer, make sure all fans are spinning. Look at the label of the PSU and report the make, model# and Wattage.

Is there any fans running? What is the make and model of your machine If it is an OEM, If it is a custom build what is the brand and model of your motherboard.

Was there any errors before the system shut off mainly a BOSD (Blue Screen Of Death)?
What changed before this happened? Any software, updates, drivers installed before this happened?

My friend's computer always starts in safe mode.ive tried last known good configuration, system restore in safe mode.tried unchecking the safe boot option in boot.ini in msconfig.still no success.any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Computer starts in safe boot !

My best guess is that it is not only Safeboot that is turned on in System Restore.
While in System Restore, click on the General tab and make sure that the Startup Selection has a dot next to the option that says Normal Setup - load all device drivers and services. Click apply, and when prompted to restart the computer, let it restart the computer.

There are some other ideas I have about what could be wrong, but first try this. If the problem still persists, please post back.

You can access System Restore by clicking on Run in the start menu and typing in MSCONFIG (Just in case you were accessing it another way.)

Good luck

So my co worker asked me to look at her laptop its a toshiba tecra m2. The boot keeps hanging up on the system32 file agp440.sys . I went on the internet and found a windows xp pro disk to try and replace the system32 file using recovery. After a learning how to add SATA drivers to the windows xp boot I was able to detect the hard drive and just before windows setup screen comes up the computer blue screens with a 0x0000007B stop error... I read that the battery could cause this so i carefully took apart the computer and replaced it with no change. I put a windows 7 disk in to see if i could use the recovery console in it and suprisingly it booted no problem, i was able to use command prompt but with no idea what the problem is i have no idea what to do with it. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated. Thanks for reading the problem hope someone has an idea. any more info needed just ask

A:Windows wont boot hangs up on agp440.sys and wont complete boot off the disk :/

Info on 7B STOP errors...http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.htm, scroll down to 7B in left column.

IMO, you have compounded the situation by using a "downloaded" version of Windows, since I suspect that such may contain embedded malware as part of the package.

Any number of things may have caused the initial hang, as you can see by reading the data at the Aumha website.

A:CHKDSK Starts every time I boot up computer

You must have admin level access to follow this process.- Press Windows Logo Key + R to open the Run dialog.- In the Run dialog, type cmd and press Enter. This would open the command prompt window.- In the command prompt window, type chkntfs /D and press Enter- RebootIf you do not see Adminstrator : in the command prompt window title, then you are not running it with admin level access. In that case, click on Start Menu, type cmd in the search box, right click on cmd.exe when it appears in the searched items list and select Run as administrator.
