Windows generates broken UDP packets

Q: Windows generates broken UDP packets

Hi all,
I just installed W7 SP1 Pro and updated it using Windows Update. I also installed the ethernet driver. The windows host is in, along with my linux boxes and my Android phone. Windows can't resolve names, whatever the nameserver is (my local

I have perfect connectivity on my local network and can successfully ping at any stage in the following story. My Windows host got its IP via DHCP ( and I flushed it DNS cache before each step. I also tried once with a fixed address in
the same network, with no better luck at getting DNS replies.
I disabled the firewall on my router and here is what happens;

The different IP is irrelevant to point out as it is in the same network as my Windows host.
So then, I tried to use a local resolver on my router, with the exact same symptoms: Windows sends packets that hit the wire, go to my router inbound interface and that's it. Those packets vanish and don't reach the local resolver (setting the server software
to maximum verbose tells me there are no requests reaching it). My linux hosts on the other hand don't have any issue and get name resolution from my personal router. FYI, said DNS server software is unbound.
That's it. The conclusion I reach is: Windows generates faulty DNS queries that are simply dropped. It might even be worse, because it doesn't even reach the DNS server software, so the UDP packet must be bad.
Any help would be appreciated

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

There is a feature in windows 7 that creates a tutorial for almost any task. It creates the tutorial and highlights what the user needs to click. Can someone please tell me the name of the feature.

As the title says, its quite self explanatory- i can connect to the internet fine - all the settings have been untouched.The status is connected and there isnt anyapparent hardware failure (according to windows). Its just, packets are being sent - but they are not being received. Ive reset my routerseveral times, restarted several times and i can only think of a reformat in case of an OS issue. I would like to leave this as a last resort however. I have suspicions that it may be a hardware problem. This is due to the fact thqt the previous day, before i shut down my computer, lag caused a violent interaction with my foot. it wasnt superman force or anything, just more than a tap so i highlydoubt that was the problem.

Thanks in advance,

I know this is the opposite of a common problem that people post left and right about on this forum, but my network won't send even one packet. Hi kjseara, the IP address your getting (169.254.x.x) suggests you are unable to connect to your router, you said you had windows firewall running; do you have any antivirus running? If so, try disabling them and then try and connect again. If the problem still persists try disabling your windows firewall and see if you can connect then.

At random times, my internet will "drop" connection and will not download any packets, but I am still able to send packets. My Local Area Connection icon continues to say I am connected, my modem is fully functional, and my cables are good. I can get my internet back up and running for 10 minutes or so by disable and re-enabling my Network Connection. If I simply try the "repair", it gives me an error at the "Refreshing IP" step.

I have done a full system scan for viruses and I am clean. My drivers are fully updated, I have disabled my firewalls, and still no help. During the times when it is down, I can successfully ping my modem through CMD, but I get the time-out error if I ping a site, my default gateway, the DHCP Server, or the DMS Servers.

I have made no changes to any major settings on my computer, nor has there been any recent additions/removals of any software.

Does anyone know what is causing this or how I can fix it?

I m using Windows XP SP2 and have a LAN connection
... of late i have noticed that the number of packets sent in the Activity frame of the
"LAN Connection Status " window is more than the number of packets received .
I have fully scanned my PC with ZoneAlarm antivirus / antispyware and HijackThis and no problem was detected.
I also checked the running process through Task Manager and found only Microsoft services and other system related services (ZoneAlarm scanning process, Disk keeper service, .. etc) are running.
I also updated the NIC driver but it doesn,t solve the problem. My NIC is Realtek RTL8139.

Help Please.
Thank You.

A:sent packets hugely more than packets received.

If you check the status and note the number of packets send/received, then do it again after exactly one minute, what is the number of sent packets over the minute? What is the number of received packets?

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode with Networking and checking if this is still happening?

Hi, this is probably more of a Windows XP problem but because I'm comparing it with Windows 7, I post it here. Here's actually a copy&paste of what I've written in other forums, but still got no answer to it.

I have a Windows XP Home Edition SP3 running on an Intel QuadCore (Core2Quad) machine with a 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD. Although my problem is more of a network (internet) related, I am also curious if the details I gave will have an impact to my problem. So my main problem is I have Windows XP on the D: drive and Windows 7 on the C: drive (I'm dual booting). I am connected to the internet through a LAN cable connected to a TP-Link router. My Windows 7 (where I post this question from) get internet connection very easily. It's fast and running without any problem. Recently I noticed that the number of packets sent and received to my Windows 7 is a lot. Here's a screen cap of what I am getting:

Now, with my Windows XP Home Edition, it's different. I am getting a connection (which is good), but I'm only getting a few packets sent and received (which is bad). Here's what I'm getting:

Because of this, I cannot activate my Windows XP and cannot download any update (Windows update, AntiVirus update, etc..). In brief, I cannot use the internet at all.
I've tried everything from clicking the "repair" button, disabling the network adapter, uninstalling the network adapter driver, restarting the router, plug-off the LAN cable, pinging through command prompt, usi... Read more

The title says it all.

Ill give you a description of the situation:

I have a IBM Thinkpad Laptop,A Compaq Presario both connected to a Linksys Router which is connected to my modem.

Then I got myself a used Emachines with a cracked motherboard and the memory installed upside down (LOL!)

I brought it to a technician,got it fixed,reinstalled Windows Xp,and the rest

No I want to connect it to the same network as the two other computer.Now,by default,Windows Xp creates a connection as soon as it detects one,named Local Area Connection ,right?So when I put in my ethernet,It made one! Great!

So then I try to go on internet explorer and type google.com to test and it doesn't work.
I check the internet connections and it showed me that packets are being sent but none get received.

Yet! the compaq worked fine with the same process.

Thanks in advance.

-Running Winsock Fix and LSP fix

I dont have any proxies or firewalls. I honestly dont know what could have caused this - working one second, and not the next. Called my ISP - no outages reported in my area. Does anyone have any ideas?

First of all, I'm not sure if this should be here or if it should be in the Hardware & Devices subforum, so if I have it in the wrong place you will have to excuse me. Anyway...
I have an oldish eMachines computer here that I'm trying to set up as a file server to replace an old S939 Athlon box. However, the NIC on it, a Realtek RTL8100C, seems to like dropping incoming traffic. RDP will stop responding, FTP transfers will die, and SMB stuff will take forever to get directory listings. I did a ping -t on the machine and I keep getting "Request timed out." regardless of what machine I am pinging from or where the eMachines is plugged in (router upstairs or switch in the basement.) However, here's where things get interesting. If I run a ping -t to the router FROM the eMachines, suddenly requests stop timing out when pinging the eMachines from another computer. Also, when booted into Parted Magic from a CD ping requests do not drop, nor do they drop when using a Windows XP-based WinPE disc. I have tried updating the driver from Realtek's site and from Windows Update. Any ideas?

For reference, the exact model of eMachines is W3653a with an Elitegroup 945GCT-M3 motherboard.

Hi There,

I have a Dell INspiron 1300 Laptop with a Dell 1470 dual band WLAN Mini-PCI Card. I have tried several different configurations but either get limited or no connection to my wireless router and when it does connect I am unable to get out to the internet as the connection is not receiving packets, only sending a few. When I connect the laptop directly to the router, everything works fine and my macbook running vme windows xp software wireless connects just fine as well. I have tried entering a manual IP address and DNS address, and this gets me great signal strength, but again, no internet access or packet receipt. On the laptop, I am running latest version of McAfee and Internet Explorer 8. The ISP is Brighthouse Networks and the modem/router they provided is a UBEE - I have looked at the modem/router settings online but have not changed them as I'm in way over my head on that and don't want to disrupt internet access on my computers that do work.

As best I can tell, the problem seems to be that my router is taking too long to assign the laptop an ip address, and so it times out and gives me the dreaded 169.xxx.x.x address. I have tried ipconfig /release (which clears out the ip info) but on ipconfig /renew I get the same timeout/169 problem. I have also tried reseting winsock and tcp/ip restacking to no avail. This problem is sucking days out of my life...hope you can provide some help

I am developing a packet sniffer based on windows raw socket on windows 7. The program captures packet from IP layer. The issue i am facing here is that, Program captures all packets but some of them are captured in wrong order, for eg. for a tcp connection establishment phase, instead of getting packets in SYN , SYN-ACK, ACK order i get it as SYN, ACK, SYN-ACK. Instead of capturing ACK after SYN-ACK(from remote), pgm gets ACK before SYN-ACK packet. Same thing is happening some times during data transfer phase also. Program captures the ACK packet of a data packet before the actual data packet. If i run a wireshark in parallel, it displays properly. I am using Visual Studio 2005 as the IDE.

#include "stdio.h"
#include "winsock2.h"
#include "ws2tcpip.h"
#include "pcap.h"
#include "MSTcpIP.h"

int in, optval=1;
struct hostent *local;
char *Buffer;

//Initialise Winsock
if (WSAStartup(MAKEWORD(2,2), &wsa) != 0)
printf("WSAStartup() failed.\n");
return 1;

//Create a RAW Socket
sniffer = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_RAW, IPPROTO_IP);
if (sniffer == INVALID_SOCKET)
printf("Failed to create raw socket.\n");
return 1;

memset(&dest, 0, sizeof(dest));
memcpy(&dest.sin_addr.s_addr,argv[1], sizeof(argv[1]));
dest.sin_family = AF_INET;
dest.sin_port = 0;

My Windows 8 pro x64 is installed yesterday, behaves exactly like the old one from one week ago, exactly like the previous installation. If I run "sfc /scannow" my CBS.log is around 90-100 MB in size, it was 160 MB at some point. I am booting from a 60GB SSD if it matters. The system runs fine, I have no errors so the amount of errors reported by sfc is just... weird.

Dism reports every time that everything is OK, no errors found. Chkdsk also says nothing is wrong.
I did everything that was written in the sfc tutorials from within Windows, I ran sfc several times, I exported the log to sfcdetails.log and it has over 60 MB...

I looked into the file and all reported errors are the same type, like the one below with "file is missing" :

2013-07-25 09:54:06, Info CSI 00000012 [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"1394ohci.sys" of 1394.inf, Version = 6.2.9200.16384, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type = [l:24{12}]"driverUpdate", TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, file is missing

Now it's impossible to have the amount of errors reported, something else must be happening here.
Any ideas ?

A:sfc generates 90-160 MB logs

Hello jdaniel,

I totally agree with your logic, your findings, and your conclusion (implied) that sfc /scannow might not be all that it should. Specifically, I have seen many individuals report that "everything is fine" but they are compelled to do a "super-clean" check via running sfc /scannow only to be disappointed that it found many errors. This is why I recommend that users, not having a specific problem, should not run sfc /scannow. With that said, I am running it right now on my perfectly clean test rig. BTW, I looked at your log (briefly) and saw many missing files associated with the AMD architecture. Now, my test rig is an AMD based laptop so let's see what happens. I'll update my thread with my findings and we'll compare notes at that time so hang in ther and I'll be back shortly.

I have a PC with an asus P6X58D-E motherboard and an i7 processor.

It had not booted for a long time and I put it in storage.

Yesterday I decided I was going to get it going again. I bought a new 750w psu because I suspected that that was what was wrong with it. I replaced that and it still didn't work. I replaced the cr2032 bios battery and still no boot. I hit the clr cmos button and and booted and I got some life.

After setting some of the settings in the bios correctly and booting a few more times it was working fine. I upgraded to Windows 10 over night shut it down in the morning and went to work.

Upon returning from work it won't boot (it has been off the whole day. I have replaced the bios battery again and gone through yesterday's fixes, with no luck. What am I missing?

IE8 and a few other applications have been generating the "Not Responding" messages. I bring up Task Manager to close the failing application, and it to fails intermittantly. When I try to close the failing application(s), it requires several attempts to close the application(s); and at times I will get the not responding message from Task Manager itself. The event log for Applications shows several errors of the 1001 and 1002 codes. When I go to the Microsoft Help website the indication is there is no help for these problems. This condition has been happening for several weeks. Any help provided in solving this problem is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi folks,
I am not sure exactly when this started to occur, as I mostly use Linux on this box, and it's a while since I tried to install from an exe on the XP part.

When I try to run most installers for applications I get this error.
When I try to run SOME already installed applications (most are okay) I also get this error.

I have no idea what is causing it.
I have tested the ram and it came up okay. I tried to run a checkdsk on C: (which set itself to run on next reboot) but windows failed to boot when it came time.

"Access violation at address 004096DA. Write of address 00400000"

Any tool I've tried to install to try and fix it simply creates the same error and thus can't be installed. So my computer is a bit stuck!!

Does anyone have any bright ideas? I would really rather not reinstall Windows, which is about the only fix I can think of.

With thanks,

A:XP generates Access violation with most .exe's

Further information:
This error actually prevents quite a few programs from running. Not sure just how many.
I did not occur when XP is in safe mode. I can install and run programs to my hearts content.
In Safe Mode I have run various tools to clean up / fix the registry. I also ran a tool from http://wiki.djlizard.net/Repair_Permissions to repair registry permissions (in case that was the issue). All of these tools made a large number of changes. I also ran lastest Adaware and that cleaned a couple of minor things up.

Once back in normal boot mode, the problem persists.

I would really like to fix this.

With thanks,

Hi all,

I am working on creatign a standalone CA and a subordinate - both servers are Windows Core. I have *.req file generated from the subordinate, copied over to the standalone CA and now and wanted to get the certificate for subordinate.

When running:

I only get the *.rsp file.
However - when running:
certreq -Submit file.req file.cer file.p7b file.ful
I got the *.rsp AND the *.ful file only, not *.cer, no *.pb7 - nuffin.
Question is - what am I doing wrong here?

I am using the following code to add filter to Traffic Control API that has a DSCP flow on 46 (EF)

This code uses the TcAddFilter function with TC_GEN_FILTER structure in order to add such a filter.
    TC_GEN_FILTER filter;
    IP_PATTERN pattern{};
    IP_PATTERN mask{};

    filter.AddressType = NDIS_PROTOCOL_ID_TCP_IP;
    filter.Pattern = &pattern;
    filter.Mask = &mask;
    filter.PatternSize = sizeof(IP_PATTERN);

    pattern.ProtocolId = 17; //Means UDP
    pattern.DstAddr = destination.GetSystemReadableIP();
    pattern.tcDstPort = 0

    mask.ProtocolId = UCHAR_MAX;
    mask.DstAddr = ULONG_MAX;
    mask.tcDstPort = 0;

    HANDLE filter_handle;
    auto err = TcAddFilter(flow->handle, &filter, &filter_handle);

It returns zero which means no errors and using Wireshark I can see that the RTCP packets (which are based on UDP) have DSCP values set on 46 (EF) but UDP packets with raw data have no DSCP. When I close my app, the RTCP packets also go back to zero
DSCP which means no other process handles this value assignment.

But if I use Group Policy Editor, I am able to assign 46 to both RTCP and UDP packets.

Please tell me what is wrong with my code?

Hey! I have a strange issue, I couldn't find anything like this. So I bought a Samsung S24D300 a few weeks ago. It works well, didn't have any pixel problems etc. But yesterday I noticed that after some time (let's say around 1 hour after turning it on), it generates a single red stuck pixel, which is only visible on black background. But, after I turn it off for 10 minutes, it disappears. And as I see, it becomes brighter and brighter, still not that big deal (at least I will turn it off more often), but it annoys me, as my previous B300 also had a blue stuck pixel, and I cannot return it now. What can cause this? I will try running JScreenFix and other softwares after it appears, however it does not disappear if I massage it gently. Has anybody had any problems like this? Thank you.

EDIT: now I didn't have the problem for hours, then I started Skyrim, and the red pixel appeared immediately.

Lately I've been having some unusual network traffic. I've checked with Network Monitor 3.4 and the process name is either svchost or system or unknown.
How can I find out what generates the traffic ? There were mainly TCP packets, but others too.

I don't expect to solve the problem for me, just want some guides that you might know of, or tools to analyze network traffic, or some info on how to interpret Network Monitor frame details.

edit: antivirus/firewall/.. is hopeless

Microsoft Releases Broken Windows 7 Update to Fix Broken Windows 7 Update

Windows updates are still a huge pain in the neck for Microsoft, as the company is often hit with reports of failed installs and bugs caused by the botched patches that it ships every month.

This is what happened with the Windows 7 August Monthly patch rollup KB4034664, which introduced a series of problems affecting users with two monitors.

Basically, the update broke down the display on the second monitor, causing rendering issues that required a manual workaround provided by Microsoft itself and involving enabling Desktop Composition and then configure the main monitor in the monitor layout.

Earlier this week, however, Microsoft attempted to address the problem with a new patch, which would have made the manual workaround pretty much unneeded. But it looks like the KB4039884 update in charging of doing the whole magic is broken as well and introducing a series of other problems on Windows 7 systems.

New update, new bugs
As Woody Leonhard notes, there are users complaining that this update, despite installing fine, restores a number of update files to old versions, which in its turn triggers notifications for more than 20 important and recommended updates in Windows Update, even though all these patches have already been installed.

Removing the update eliminates the bug as well, but without it, the only way to deal with the dual monitor bug is to turn to the manual workaround.

This is very strange situation. When asking for a new pasword as a registered user on a website like www.phpmydriectory.com from a Vista computer and then clicking on the confirmation link in the email sent by the website, generates 2 mouseclicks, so that the mail with the new password is sent twice. This only happens on Vista systems. All other OSs work fine, so it is not a bug in the script.
Any idea what the reason might be? And how to solve it?

A:Single click generates 2 mouse clicks

Hi Frlill, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might have your double-click speed set to fast in the Mouse settings in the Control Panel (Classic View). Check there (in Activities tab for me in Mouse settings) and slow it down a bit and test to see if that helps any.

Hope this helps,

Ok, here is my setup.

Win XP installed on Seagate SATA 500GB drive. Win 7 installed on an old spare WD 120GB EIDE drive. After installing Win 7 I was never able to configure a true "dual boot" menu so I change drive priority via BIOS when necessary. EasyBCD never worked. MB is Intel D975XBX2.

Recently after running Win 7 for several days I reverted back to Win XP and at boot a long CHKDSK routine executed. When complete it stated changes had been made to the drive, not sure which one. The XP OS appears to be operating normally.

While operating in Win 7 I accessed the Win XP D: drive to extract media files and some dbases for installed software. I've backed up the dbases just is case there might be some corruption. System files were not accessed (as far as I know anyway).

I'm now very concerned about the Win XP drive as I didn't expect file corruption on the whole disk. Win XP is still my primary OS and this drive contains all my important data and applications. I thought a dual drive install would shield me from any serious problems.

I'd like to continue using Win 7 but file corruption is now a big concern. Does anyone have any suggestions short of physically disconnecting the drive? Is there any true file corruption occuring or am I just being paranoid?

Interestingly, on my E1505 I have set up XP/7 with a proper "dual boot" menu on a partitioned drive and I've never seen the CHKDSK menu.

Finally, I'm loving Windows 7. Can't wait for the RTM.... Read more
