I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all, I tried to reply to the thread with a similar title to provide a correct answer. So I am reintroducing the topic and providing an answer that seems to work.

Problem: I want to use media player with very minimal frame. Many answers are "play full screen". But I know that media can be played in windows media without any skin, very minimal framing and floating media controls over the video that auto hide when you move away.

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

I have a problem opening any media file in any of the Media Players viz., RealOne Player build or my Windows Media Player 10.
Whenever I open the above mentioned Media Players on my system, their interface opens up and after I open and select any media (usually audio) file, the player keeps on connecting to the file and takes more than 1 minute and above in opening and playing any valid and good media file, may it be a .wma or .mp3 audio file.
How to fasten the dead slow speed of the players?

You don't have a choice, sorry.

This is the situation.
I have videos I watch from my company for training.
I use Music Match Jukebox for my music and videos.
My company says I must use WMP. So I upgraded
what I had to v.10 but I did not select 'default player'
while loading. Viewing my business trainings are still not possible.
I was told to uninstall WMP and reload it. When I go to
Control Panel and to Uninstall, WMP is not even listed.
So I went to 'explore' and tried to delete, and it said it was being used by other programs and would not let me delete.

I went to Start up and it is not in there. So what do I do.

Hi, I used windows update (not microsoft) to download and install windows media player 11 as it was showing in my software updates. After restart, quick launch icon is now missing, start menu entry is gone, and I now have a folder named windows media connect 2 which I hadn't noticed before. Windows media player is still showing in windows explorer, and windows media player 11 shows in add/remove. Please advise, I've probably been installing and uninstalling too many programs lately trying to regain disk space. Btw, neither windows media player, nor media center show up in windows update any longer........both had before, WMP is the only one I tried to update. Thanks

I have Windows 7 64bit.

After I installed it, everything was fine except the part where I wanted to configure Mplayer(www.mplayerhq.hu) to be used for all movie extensions.

I right-clicked a .avi movie, Open With, Choose Default Program, Browse, selected the Mplayer executable and checked the checkbox that says to use Mplayer always to open this kind of files.

Normally(in WindowsXP and Windows Vista) next time I just double-click any .avi file and it opens with Mplayer. Instead in Windows 7 when double-clicked an .avi file, it automatically opened Windows Media Player. After this each time I right-click, Open With, Browse, select Mplayer, the checkbox that says "Use this program to always..." is simply grayed out. I tried to add the NoFileAssociation registry thing but it does not help. No matter what I do, Windows 7 forces me to use Windows Media Player by default.

I got mad, rebooted and started WindowsXP from a liveCD, changed ownership of the two(program files 32bit and 64bit) wmplayer.exe executables and removed them. Then I copied mplayer in the Windows Media Player directory and renamed it to wmplayer.exe. After rebooting to Windows 7, when I double click a movie I can see that it tries to open using the renamed wmplayer.exe mplayer but it does not work because most likely it passes some parameters to the command line which mplayer does not understand.

Now I want to totally remove W Media Player. However, it doesn't show on the add/remove programs listing. On this web site, I saw explanations about how to remove WMP in Windows XP, but never in Windows 2000.

Does anyone know how to remove Windows Media Player in Windows 2000? Thx.

i am using the WinXP Home OS and upgraded my Windows Media Player from v9.0 to v10.0 but found out that a lot of radio channels that were previously available on v.9.0 are not available on v.10.0 and would like to revert back to v.9.0

Tried to uninstall and delete the Windows Media Player folder in my Program Files folder but it just kept reappearing. Also, tried to restore the computer to a time before the v10.0 installation but the restore failed.

Went to a website to try to download and reinstall v.9.0 but received a message from my computer that I already have a more recent version of Media Player (v10.0) on my computer and the downloaded was ended.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can remove v.10.0 and revert or reinstall v.9.0.

Hi all,
some, actually, a lot of my avi files in Windows Media Player are missing, they have just simply disappeared.

My system is:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Windows Media Player Version: 11.0.5721.5145

I ran AVG Full scan & Anti-Rootkit scan but they came up with nothing.
I also ran Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware flash scan, quick scan & full scan, nothing again.
I also found a site online that said if WMP has missing files then clearing the WMP Database or the WMP Cache may fix the problem. I didn't do these 2 things though cause it didn't say if that would delete the rest of my avi files as well or just fix the problem...
Any help would be much appreciated.

I have noticed that some of the visualisations that originally came with Windows Media Player have gradually got 'Lost' as the Player has become upgraded (now Version 11)

Ambience, Particle, Plenoptic and Spikes are all showing in MP but do not work.

I have done a search on Google for these and can't find them at all. My searches threw up several forums and I found that these missing visuals with the later versions of MP is common. I followed some instructions given on one of these forums and managed to restore 'Musical Colors' - a very popular one, which I had completely forgotten about, as this wasn't showing at all in Version 11.

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to how these other missing visualisations can be restored?

Hi all - Windows Media Player 12 - Windows 7 x64

So I have decided to delete several un-listened-to songs from my library on WMP 12, and ended up doing so in the Music folder, because when I right-click on the song in WMP 12 and select Delete, nothing happens. Literally NOTHING - no lag, freeze or crash -
it just ignores the fact that I even clicked delete. The songs that I deleted from the Music folder have not been updated, that is, they aren't gone from WMP 12, and I have tried to delete songs that ARE in my Music folder from WMP 12, but to no avail. I can
still play songs that are in my Music folder directly from WMP 12. Any suggestions!?

I just don't want to use Windows Media player. It is not even there on my pc I guess.

Still, several of my file associations are showing windows media player as associated with it.

When I go to control panel - default program, and untick associations for wmp, then don't stick. unticking them doesn't work, they reappear the next time.

I also have foobar2000, winamp, vlcplayer installed, I have put default for these programs.

however, all the extensions associated with wmp do not appear in the list of extension for these three programs, so I am not able to set them.

I just don't want to use wmp. I want those extensions to remain unassociated with any program, so that when and if I ever player any file with that extension, windows should ask me how to open that, and then I can select .

How to remove wmp associations from all extensions listed there, even without associating it with another program.

I recently spent a few weeks transferring hundreds of hours of my family's home movies on VHS, Hi-8, Mini-DV and HDD, to my hard drive using Ion's VCR 2 PC. The VCR 2 PC creates .mpeg files.

A few weeks ago, I installed a 1 TB hard drive and moved, via a cut and paste, all of the .mpeg files from my old hard drive to my new one.

Now, when I play a .mpeg file in Windows Media Player, the video is there, but no audio. The video codec is listed as "InterVideo DVD", but there are two dashes beside the audio codec.

When I use the software that came with the VCR 2 PC - EZ VHS Converter - to view a file, both the video and audio are there, but my family generally all have Windows Media Player, and none have EZ VHS Converter.

Obviously, I've done something ill-advised, and the cameras and vcr I used to transfer the originals are ally pretty much finished, and I'm concerned about whether the tapes will hold up during another transfer.

Any suggestions on how I may restore the audio would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Download Mediainfo and use it to identify the audio codec that your files are using. Alternatively, get everyone to use VLC player (free) or download the Klite Codec Pack or the CCCP codec pack.

I run Windows 8.1 64-bit with Windows Media Player 12.  Media Player was hanging alot, so I ran the Media Player Library Troubleshooter from Microsoft, which said my library was corrupted.  I applied the fix, went to the Media Library folder, erased the folder, and re-opened Media Player.  BUT, as it rebuilds my very large library, it puts MOST of my music in an "Unknown" folder.  All of the files in that "Unknown" folder have no id tags, no album title, no contributing artist etc.  However, I also have MediaMonkey, and all of my music files are normal in that library and have all their id tags. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled WMP several times and the same thing happens...I have also tried a System Restore, but WMP still puts nearly everything in an Unknown folder.

Ok so this is just VERY strange to me and i cant figure it out. I was lookin through my start bar to bring up WMP(even though i hardly use it) and i couldnt find it there. So i decided to look in the program file(thought maybe i deleted it from the start bar.) and wmplayer.exe wasnt there. So then i did a search for Window Media Player on the C drive. Well it found the Windows Media Player folder in the program files along with a help folder. Also it found two shortcuts for WMP both in the "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Start Menu\Programs\" folder, which if that was true wouldnt the shortcut show up in my start bar? It doesnt. Not only that but if i follow this shortcut it brings up WMP and its workin just fine, however, this is the shortcut target: "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /prefetch:1 Now, if that is the target, and it Clearly finds the file since WMP works as i said, then why the hell can i not see that file in the Windows Media Player program file? Not only that but if i do a search for "wmplayer.exe" no results are found. How is that possible being that the shortcut(which works) points to wmplayer.exe and opens WMP.... This Really confuses me being that the program works yet i cant find it anywhere... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone knows a way to remove the default pinned windows media player from the taskbar with a script/GPO. The lnk files for the pinned items are saved in this folder:
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

but if you delete it there the icon will turn white and will no longer be accesible. When you try to click it an error pops up allowing you to remove the pinned item.

This is probably because the pinned links are stored on the files system, but additional info on the pinned items is stored in a binary registry key:

Is there a way I can do this with a script/GPO or API call somehow?

Cheers, Michiel

A:Remove Windows Media Player pinned taskbar item

Hi MichB,Per the windows sdk for windows 7, a small set of applications are pinned by default for new installations. Other than these, only the user can pin further applications; programmatic pinning by an application is not permitted. Therefore, I think the programmtic interface for adding/removing them are quite limited. As you mentioend that deleting items under %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBaris not complete, you can try using processMonitor to capture all the file/registry related activities to see whether there is anything else related to the taskbar item. Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help.

A:Solved: Stop Windows Media Player Automaticly ading media files to libary

In WMP go to Tools > Options and uncheck all the boxes in the Player tab, Privacy tab and Library tab.

In the Library tab click on Monitor Folders and set the top part to "My personal folders", then click on Advanced Options.

Set all the folders to "Ignore". Unfortunately you can't set the Rip folder to "Ignore" so for that go to the Rip music tab, where it says "Rip music to this location" click on Change and create an empty folder somewhere. Then just never add any music files to that folder.

Then delete everything out of the WMP library and it should remain empty.

Every since January 4th of this year, I have been trying to fix a very annoying issue with windows media player.
How It Started
Back in January my dad's computer constantly kept freezing over and over due to him having way to many podcast on his computer. I'm the only one who knew how to fix it from crashing and so I tried to delete some of the memory off the computer, however when
the memory was low I noticed that a few programs (including media player) were not functioning correctly. I was able to fix them but then I noticed that media player's entire library was missing, which made me think if I restarted the computer, it would fix
it. Sadly it didn't but I was able to find tutorials on how to restore the library back to MP, but the thing is before I attempted that, I went into media player with administrator on in hopes it would make a change. Of course it didn't but now there's a issue
that I face and I keep running into dead ends. Every single time I try to turn on media sharing in the WMP library, when I check both options and then click ok it doesn't do anything. No matter how many times I try to press it, nothing happens and also what
I find strange is that the ok button has a administrator prompt shield on it now. Kind of like it's trying to ask for permission but fails before it can do that.
The solutions I have tried
I have tried dozens of solutions and yet none of them fix the issue. I tried using regedit.exe and tried fixing it's registry but that di... Read more

I am using WMP 12, on Windows 7, as a media server for an external disk (WD Passport Ultra) plugged into and configured by my router (ZyXel VMG8924) via its USB slot. It works quite happily for video files up to two hierarchical levels below my Videos folder,
i.e. they are arranged in year number folders and some of those folders have sub-folders, none of whose contents appear to be indexed by WMP Digital Server, but all videos at the two higher hierarchical levels are. I have tried both the 'apply media information
changes' option from the Organize menu option, and the 'make all of the media in my library available to my device' from the media streaming options customization but neither had any effect in showing up my missing videos (which by the way are mainly mpg's).
The router also allows configuration of an ftp server for the Videos folder and this is able to retrieve every single file in it so I know they are accessible by this route. Any ideas?
