Preferred Solution: Black box appears and disappears on my screen..is it a virus..please help..

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Does this happen when you first turn the machine on? Or just at random times?

Hi, I have an office desktop pc (HP COMPAQ ELITE 8100) running 64-bit Windows 7. I was manually running Windows update and manually updating some of my drivers when the pc suddenly turned itself off.

I turned it back on and now it doesn't get to the login screen anymore. It just displays a black screen with a movable mouse cursor although I can't really click anything or even press any keys on the keyboard.

I tried loading into the recovery environment but it only gives me the option to restore my hard drive to factory settings, which I don't want since I have lots of important files in it.

I've searched around the forums but I can't find a problem that is EXACTLY like mine.

By the way, my pc is on a dual boot mode with an Ubuntu 11.10 and that is how I'm able to access this forum right now. The dual boot was set-up by the employee that I replaced so I have no idea how this is set-up.
Any help would be appreciated!

I cannot get to my desktop as this black screen is preventing me to do so.

It doesn't even give me enough time to log in!
It happened once before but it magically started to work the other time.
This never happened when I was still using the stock 640GB HDD that the laptop came with. So maybe I'm thinking it's because of my SSD having problems?

Fortunately, I can still get to Safe Mode and it says I got a BSOD and here's some details that it showed:

BCCode: d1
BCP1: 0000000000000010
BCP2: 0000000000000002
BCP3: 0000000000000000
BCP4: FFFFF8800170F5D6

I went to Event Viewer and took a look on what made my computer mess up and it says that winlogon.exe and Explorer. initiated the restart of my computer and said there was no reason for it.

A:Black Screen Hang (after splash screen appears)

What happens when you try to get into Safe Mode? The next most common issue for black screen hangs is a problem with the hard drive. You can try these commands from the Recovery Console ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-install-the-windows-xp-recovery-console/ )They will attempt to correct issues with the File System on your hard drive.FIXMBRFIXBOOTCHKDSK /RIf that does not fix it, then I'd suggest a bootable diagnostic available from the manufacturer of your hard drive. There's a list of the most common one's in this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/28744/hard-drive-installation-and-diagnostic-tools/ The diagnostic will tell you if your hard drive is starting to fail (or not).

Hi to all EightForums.
today I installed Windows 8 64bits Pro with mediacenter. my problem is very familiar, black screen appears. but its appears only when I restart the computer. and in one thing I m in luck that in black screen if I simply press the power button (which I set to shut down) computer going to shut down and on pressing again its start normally and desktop appears only in 5 seconds. (takes just 5 second after the dell logo, and this is the charming thing I like on win 8). I seen many articles and threads that out of date video driver causing this. but win 8 install my laptop all drivers by it own. but as a precaution, I download again win 8 64bits driver from support.dell.com site. and again I m in luck that dell also have the win 8 64bits drivers for this laptop. but when I install this driver windows says newer driver already install.
any suggestion would be very appreciated.

I have been having this super annoying problem with my windows 8.1 laptop, and I can't remember when it started but it has gotten worse. there is this black box that pops up on the the screen every 2 min. (NOT LYING I HAVE SERIOUSLY TIMED IT) Anyway the
only thing I have seen so far was it says SYSTEM 32 in the green bar on top. Now where this really bothers me is when I'm in full screen mode, watching a movie ,playing a game and so on it just minimizes to the taskbar and I have to open it from there, otherwise
if I'm in windowed mode this "black box" still pops up but doesn't minimize the program.
Usually I would try and figure this out myself but I have gotten nowhere, and the internet has LITERALLY got nothing and the frustration is killing me, so please I need some ADVISE.

I am a new member so hope you can help me. I have a very annoying problem. My computer screen will just go blank (totally black) for about a second and then will return to normal. I also have problems with the mouse cursor freezing up for a second or two. I should say that I am not very technical.

It doesn't appear to be a monitor issue. I have reformated the hardrive and reloaded windows XP and it is still doing it. Is it a hardware issue do you think or could it be a virus. I installed SP2 before connecting to the web and the first thing I downloaded was AVG antivirus. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Thank you

Black Screen appears on returning from DOS to Windows!

While playing any DOS based game in Full Screen mode or while working on Turbo C++ in full sreen mode, when I return to windows, the screen turns black and no display can be seen. In the background, windows sounds like Logging off, etc. can be heard but the only problem is that the screen remains blacked-out. Ultimately I've to restart my system to resolve this error.
I also have the latest graphics drivers installed and I think that this problem started after I installed SP2. Please help so that I do not get a blacked out screen and also that I do not have to restart my system several times.

Vista - Screen/Monitor Problem

I just upgraded to vista about 3 weeks ago, and everything was working fine. I shut my computer off a couple nights ago and when i went to turn it on it went through the regular start-up, and Welcome screen, and then went black. I had an error message that popped up (i will turn the computer on to check what it said and will post it) but everything behind the message was still black.

When i turn the computer on in safe mode the screen works fine. Is there a way for me to see what the problem is in safe mode? I backed up everything, but my recovery disk 1 isn't working (i dont now if it is the computer or the disk, so before i buy new disks i want to see if there is anything that could be done to fix it).

Does anyone recognize this problem? Please Help!

A:Vista - After Welcome screen appears, moniter goes black!

HI sdouce4

You mention that your Recovery Disks don't work -- does that mean that you have attempted a Recovery using those Disks since your problem with the monitor appeared? That could complicate things a little, since such recoveries tend to overwrite areas of the hard drive.

If you haven't tried the Recovery Disks yet, or if you started to, but the recovery was aborted by either you or some error message, then you might still be able to troubleshoot & repair things from the PCs current state.

2 Quick-Fix tries:

Quick-Fix #1
1) Boot your computer into Safe Mode.
2) Right-click on a blank area of your desktop, and select "Properties"
3) In the "Settings" tab, select "Advanced"
4) Look for a "Monitor" tab (the Advanced Settings can vary depending on what graphics card is in your computer)
5) In the Monitor tab, look for a selection area for refresh-rate -- make sure it is a rate supported by your monitor.

(you can do the same for the 'resolution' setting)

Quick-Fix #2
1) Boot your computer into Safe Mode.
2) Use System Restore, selecting a restore point from before your display problem. You can find System Restore by navigating: Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore. (You can also simply type "System Restore" in the 'Start Search' box on the Vista Start Menu, and press Enter).

Check in your Event Viewer logs & see if you can find... Read more

Sometimes my monitor goes black for a second, sometimes 3-4 times, and then it locks the screen.
What could cause this?
Can this be related to security?
I have a turn monitor off shortcut, created with nircmd. Can it be related to that?
(No, it doesn?t happen when I use the shortcut, it is on the desktop. It happens, when I turn the mouse wheel sometimes).

A:Monitor goes black and login screen appears

What do you mean by "locks the screen?"

Does the lock screen come on or does the machine freeze (or just become unusable) and you need to hard reboot it?

Sounds like it could be a TDR issue, but we'll see about your response.

Hello all, Whenever my fingers are on the keyboard, touchpad, screen, or surface of the keyboard, the screen blacks out completely. Every time light pressure is added, even a gentle tap, the screen blacks out. Music continues to play on the laptop even when the screen is black, and if I'm typing, all of the text that I entered while the screen is black remains. Occasionally, by applying pressure to either the bottom left or right corners of the keyboard surface, the screen remains. But even so, slight changes to my hand positions are enough to make the screen black out again.I recently sent in my laptop to Lenovo repair services due to a wifi connection-related problem, but I don't think this could be connected in any way. If anyone has experienced this before or is aware of how to fix the problem, it would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Yesterday my PC was working perfect. Zero problems. I shut it off for the night, then turn it on this morning. The BIOS image appears, and then it goes to a black screen. I can't do *anything*. I've tried putting in the Windows disc to try repairing, but it won't let me boot to the disc. There's never any option to. I've tried spamming F8 for safe mode and Delete/F2 to enter the BIOS, but nothing changes. It goes straight to the black screen.
Any help in resolving this issue would be much appreciated.

Hi all,

This morning when I tried to log-in to my computer as per usual, I was faced with a black screen and could only move my cursor.

I then tried to reformat my desktop with a USB, and it was going on well until the end where the black screen and cursor appeared once again.

I have seen some responses here/online and I have tried a variety of measures but to no avail.

I appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on an MSI X320 netbook. This is the second time this happened. What happened the first time, was that the computer froze and was completely unresponsive. I waited for about four minutes and listened for any sort of activity coming from the computer (noise from the hard drive) I heard virtually nothing, and decided to force a reboot. After the reboot, and once i had logged in to my profile, it immediately displayed a debug text file. I did not save it, because everything seemed to be running fine again otherwise. I ran it yesterday with no problems at least over 24 hours.Just a moment ago, it happened again, only this time the screen went entirely black. The computer was still on, but completely unresponsive, so again, I forced a reboot. This time, however, before taking me to the login screen, it recommended I run a check disk. I allowed it to do so, and it found no disk errors, but I was unable to read the entire thing before it it closed and loaded windows. Once again, after logging in, it popped up the debug text file again. The file is EXTREMELY long, and I couldn't fit the entire thing in here, but this is the beginning:[1025/155403:WARNING:backend_impl.cc(1609)] Messed up entry found.[1025/155403:WARNING:backend_impl.cc(1895)] Destroying invalid entry.[1025/155410:WARNING:backend_impl.cc(1895)] Destroying invalid entry.[1025/191103:WARNING:dns_config_service_win.cc(481)] Failed to read DnsConfig.[1025/191113:WARNING:dns_config_service_wi... I'm using Vista Home Premium. Last night I just got rid of a virus (Antivirus 2009) and installed a new antivirus program (avast). I restarted a couple times, then went into safe mode, then shut off the computer. This morning I couldn't get it to boot, not even in safe mode. Everytime, it would make it past the loading bars, and then the screen would turn black, and there would just be the cursor there, with the little loading circle flashing.

Can someone tell me what is wrong? Or at least, can someone tell me how to get around this and boot up my computer at least once so that I can try system restore?

Hi All, I kept having the same problem with my laptop. Its nearly 6 years since I've been using it and this is the first time I had a major issue with it.  It started with some small like green colored objects alienating my screen. After awhile the screen turned to black and an error message showed up. (pictures attached).        Then the laptop will automatically restart. When it does, it will get passed the windows logo and the screen will turn black however you can hear the welcome sound despite the black screen. I tried all the remedies I've seen in your support videos. I also restored the laptop to its out of state box several times already which I'm not sure is healthy although it does fix the error. But after quite some time, probably just 3 days max or oftentimes just a few hours later the same green objects will appear in my screen and the same problem will occur. I'm just baffled because everything seems to be working perfectly with the laptop since I can still access it but only on a safe mode (I'm actually posting this on a safe mode with networking option). I refuse to send it to a technician and I really want to fix the issue on my own. Unfortunately, I can't really tell what's causing the problem. I would be extremely grateful to all of your input on fixing this error. Kind Regards,

Today I decided to try out Windows 8, and found the free trial of Windows 8 Enterprise at MSDN. I used the upgrade assistant downloaded to install windows 8, and had to choose the option that deleted my previous files, since the original upgrade option was apparently not compatible with my windows. The installation started, and after the second-reboot my computer got stuck on a "getting ready" screen. It then restarted again, but this time would go into a loop where a screen would pop up saying my computer "restarted unexpectedly or has encountered an unexpected error." After clicking "OK" and the computer restarting, the Windows 8 logo with the spinning circle below appears for a few seconds, then my screen turns black (completely black), and then goes to being back-lit, but still being black. I can't put the CD in to try to re-install windows, since this was a digital download. I also read on other topics that putting the computer to sleep and then waking it up again will fix this, but I can't put the computer to sleep when I have no interface to work with. I thought this might be a result of my graphics card, so I reverted to the onboard car through the BIOS with no luck. I've tried booting in safe mode with no luck, and can only seem to get into the BIOS.

Do you have restore CDs to go back to the original OS? If so, that's where I'd start, then you could try the installation again.
Also, somewhere in the upgrade assistant, it provides the option to burn a disc or make a flash drive to boot off of. Once you get the original OS back on, create a bootable disc for Windows 8.

Hi, I hope someone can help!

My Vista laptop goes to a black screen when it boots, after the 'Microsoft Corporation' ticker thing. Oddly though, it seems to still be running windows, just not showing me anything! If I leave it to boot, then use the Windows key and arrow keys to navigate to where I know the 'sleep' or 'shut down' options are, they work!

In safe mode it appears to stop loading drivers on 'crcdisk.sys', but does the same as above (whilst still showing the frozen driver loading screen, carries on loading windows in the background).

I have scanned the HD in a dock on another computer and it is healthy.

I have tried system restore using a Vista installation CD, no change.

All the other options to repair Windows etc on the Vista CD don't fix it.

I'm at a loss! I can access my data via another computer but I really need the laptop for my job!

Any ideas? Google yields lots of black screens, but none where it keep running in the background!

Thanks in advance!

The screen on my Lenovo Y50 appears extremely pale compared to other displays. Black appears grey and this noticeably reduces the image quality. I'm assuming the on-board graphic chip uses limited RGB range since I've had this issue before on my desktop PC. But this doesn't seem as easy to solve in this case. I've been trying to get a grip on it for hours, but no chance. Lenovo Y50Intel i7-4720HQ 2,60GHzNvidia GeForce GTX 960M 2GB16GB RamWindows 10 Home 64bitIntel Driver: I connected my acer monitor to the laptop with HDMI to test the effect. It resulted in a pale, limited colour profile on the external screen, too. So it's probably a driver problem etc, nothing with the screen itself. In the Intel graphics settings under  Display > General Settings > Extended   I was able to solve problem on the large monitor by extending the RGB range. For the laptop, however, it says: "This display does not support advanced settings." and so I cannot extend RGB range. To be frank, I just got the laptop and so I haven't seen the screen "do any better than this" so far. But since it really annoys me and impacts visibility and image quality, I really just can't imagine that this is the way things are supposed to look! It looked better from what I could see on photos or video reviews. Thank you.

I got a custom Laptop with the following characteristics:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit , SP1
Processor: Intel Core i3-2330M [email protected] GHz
Graphics: Intel HD 3000 & GeForce GT540M (2GB)

So a few days ago when I tried to update the Intel HD 3000 through the Device Manager, a better version was found and started installing it. Suddenly the screen turned to black!
I turned off the laptop and booted in safe mode. I opened Device Manager again and I saw that Intel HD 3000 was replaced by "Standard VGA Adapter"...So I uninstalled it and rebooted again in safe mode and Intel HD 3000 was installed automatically. But the problem was not solved and the same would happen if I tried to update again the Intel HD card through Device Manager.
Generally I have googled very much about this problem but no results. I have downloaded the driver from Intel website to try it manually and again it fails to install.

But here is where it gets more strange:

Nvidia card is supposed to be up-to-date since when I click in Device manager to search online for drivers the message says there is not newer version. But there is not even a sign in my laptop that it is "alive". I mean that I cant even find Nvidia's control panel when I right-click in Desktop or near clock or at my Control Panel...I think thats not normal too.
So I downloaded the appropriate driver from Nvidia website, started installing it and an error appeared: "NVIDIA Installer cannot c... Read more

Hello. I tried to speed up the boot up process by taking some applications out of the start menu/inital lunch mode as the PC boots up. However, what has happenned is that I have inadventently caused the following problem: When I start the PC and Windows 7 loads, it shows normal initializing screens then goes black for 10/15 mins prior to getting to the desktop, and then the PC runs fine. The mouse/cursor is visible and moves as I command, but nothing else.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Any help would be appreciated.

I have recently encountered a problem with explorer.exe. A black screen with only mouse cursor appears for long time after login to my ID, it takes approximately 7 to 10 mins before the desk top loading up.

Anyway every time I now logon I have to press 'Ctrl-Alt-Del' and then open Task Manager, and run a new task 'explorer.exe' and everything is loading quickly. I'm just wondering why it keeps doing this?

Thanks, all help is appreciated,

Can you boot into safe mode? If you can try SFC. Also if safe mode works try a clean startup.

Hi, whenever I boot up my computer, explorer will either show up for about 2 minutes before disappearing, or will not show up at all. It is also absent from the list of processes. If I go into the Task Manager and try to execute explorer.exe as a New Task, the desktop and toolbar appear for maybe 20 seconds at max, then disappears, then comes back, then disappears, etc. It continues this cycle maybe four or five times in total, and then just stops loading altogether. The event log says of this: "The shell stopped unexpectedly and explorer.exe was restarted." I ran a TrendMicro Housecall and removed the malware that showed up there, and removed almost all of the malware there (some of it refused to leave, like Zango, but I don't think adware as mild as Zango could have caused this). Actually, this had happened to me once before, and to fix it I ran a System Restore to about a month before it happened, but luckily for me, there are no useful restore points as options this time around. Anyone know of a fix for this? Apparently it's not completely uncommon, but solutions I've come across via Googling seemed too specific to that person's case and didn't apply to mine.

I am having a problem where my screen will suddenly go completely black for a few seconds, then reappears, and continues to flash on and off like this probably about 5 times (taking a total of around 30 seconds) and then I get a blue screen of death.

(I think the cursor can still be seen when the screen goes black.)

This happens almost every day I use my computer. It seems the only way I can prevent the system from crashing is if I quickly hit the sleep button before the blue screen can appear.

I am running Vista with all the latest updates. My video card and motherboard are also up-to-date.

This is my video card:

Sorry I don't have any info from the blue screen. It disappears almost immediately, and it just never seems like a good time to allow my computer to suddenly crash so that I can try to get the info. =/

Any help on this would be much appreciated. I have been dealing with this issue for a while now. Thanks in advance.

Hello all,

windows 7 64 bit,

when i highlight any text, and then right click to copy, i get a menu with, bing, google, translate, etc. It appears for one second and then my regular menu appears.

I was suspicious it was from open office so i deleted that but the menu still appears. I would take a screen shot but it disappears to fast.
any ideas??

A:right click menu appears for a second and disappears.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Are you highlighting this text while inside a browser? If so, which browser are you using when this happens? You might try removing each accelerator, restarting the computer and then putting each desired accelerator back one at a time (testing the context menu between each one).

My computer is running really slow, and some *weird* things are happening. Like for instance...the page will suddenly "adjust" and move up a few inches or down a few inches on the screen. On the taskbar at the bottom a button will appear with just a picture of a page on it, no writting...then it disappears. It happens so fast, i can't click on it...Maybe that's a good thing. Anyway...here is my log...I appreciate you time and help.

Firstly my specs are

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @ 2.5GHz
Foxconn G31MX motherboard
4 GB installed memory
The current hdd is a WDC WD7500AADS

The hdd i'm trying to add as an additional drive and having trouble with is WDC WD40EZRX

I have just installed a new Western Digital 4TB green internal sata hard drive on my windows 7 PC

The drive is always visible in BIOS but whenever I start the Windows the new hard drive doesn?t show up in explorer or Disk Management. It will be visible in both after either scan for hardware changes in device manager or rescan in diskpart but when windows restarts I have to do this again for the drive to be visible. If I leave any data on the drive then once I have rescanned for the drive all the data is visible and intact.

Apparently this bug or similar issues are common in windows 7 but none of the potential solutions that have worked for other people have worked for me.

Other people seem to have a problem where the drive letter needs to be reassigned after reboot but for me once I have rescanned for the drive the drive letter I have previously assigned to drive persists and doesn?t need to be reassigned. I don?t know whether there is any relationship between these issues.

I?ve tried changing the sata port on the motherboard.

In diskpart hidden is set to no as is no default drive letter. I have tried setting volume to hidden and then changing back to not hidden.

I have tried a select... Read more

A:New second hdd disappears after every reboot, appears after rescan

Hello and welcome Ben mate the board is getting on a bit and I was going to suggest you update the drivers for the SATA and / or the chipset but the support site is very vague and my next thought was to run this
https://www.slimwareutilities.com/slimdrivers.php now if you use this utility then do it with caution because like a lot of these types of programs they do carry some clutterware - plus when you have used it then uninstall it. If you are unsure of which to update post back and ask - no one here bites LOL!!
By the way getting rid of AVG to me was a good move as I used it years ago and found it rather lacking and intrusive.

But for starters it would not hurt to run these
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans

the first two are the most important the other three you can ignore if you don't think it is a malware problem. But if it were me I would as it takes very little time to use them and they are handy for future use.

I'm having a terrible issue with my slave DVD optical drive disappearing more than appearing when I boot up my computer. I noticed the problem in particular after I installed a PCI-E controller card that installs a JMicron JMB36X driver. It seems though this particular driver is causing my optical drive deciding when it feels wanting to appear or not after boot ups of XP.

MassCool is the company where this card came from and they are not much help to say the least. They did come out with a Windows 7 driver which I installed on my Windows 7 partitioned half of this HD. I do not have this problem at all when I boot up Windows 7 and both optical drives have always appeared in "My Computer" there.

I have tried going into the registry to remove the upper & lower filters associated with the CD/DVD devices in the XP partition as I read that could be a viable solution but I have no uppers or lowers existing so there was nothing to remove. Any suggestions to further troubleshoot this issue so i can have my card and my optical working as they should would greatly be appreciated.
