Laptop audio refuses to work, all devices work properly, sound isn't muted. Help?

Q: Laptop audio refuses to work, all devices work properly, sound isn't muted. Help?

The title pretty much says it all. I'm honestly at the end of my rope. Device manager replies all is well, yet sound stopped working overnight.

It isn't muted,I'm not that oblivious.

I own Advanced System Care Pro ( and consequently, Driver Booster ) so I have already all of my drivers up to date, as well as any other problems I might have had.

Used a bunch of other scanners to figure out the problem to no avail. Plugging some headphones in also doesn't cut it, so it made me think that perhaps the hardware was actually fine and some software conflict was the cause of the problem. I have no freaking clue anymore, should I just get mad and yell at my computer for an hour or so to relieve stress now??

Preferred Solution: Laptop audio refuses to work, all devices work properly, sound isn't muted. Help?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Laptop audio refuses to work, all devices work properly, sound isn't muted. Help?

First we need to know the EXACT make and model number of the laptop in question. Secondly the only place you should be looking for drivers for you laptop is the laptop manufacturers support website. Driver scanners really are not helpful.

I have two machines, a Dell Latitude 6000 (with wireless and wired networking cards), and an Emachine T6410 (with a wired nic). The laptop connects wirelessly to the internet via a router I do not have access to. The desktop connects directly to the laptop via wired connection. I have ICS set up on the laptop's wireless connection. The laptop's wired NIC is using the IP address, and is receiving its wireless ip dynamically. The desktop receives the IP dynamically.

The laptop functions normally, able to ping and access the desktop and the internet. The desktop shows the shared internet connection, and is able to communicate (packets seem to be moving back and forth), but is unable to ping anything (except the loopback). It is able to use nslookup, and its arp table shows (the host).

Also, I have made sure to turn off all firewalls during my testing and proceeded to reinstall all NIC drivers before posting, to no effect.

If I've left any other valuable information out please let me know. Any suggestions at all on how to fix the network so that the desktop will be able to access the internet, and the server will be appreciated.

Hey all, hope you can help me with my dilemma,
I've recently bought 2x "Acer V223W LCD" Monitors so i could finally fulfil my long standing dream of having dual screens. My Graphics card is a "Nvidea Gainward 9600 GT PCX 2 Golden Sample 512mb" which has on it 2x DVI ports and states (on various internet sites) that it has Dual Monitor Support. Im running Windows 7 32bit.

So, being naive I presume that i just plug in the correct cables into the the monitors and plug them both into my Graphics Card and bish bash bosh i'd have dual monitor display.....Sadly not.

Ive been into windows control panel and tried to "detect" a second monitor to no avail, ive been in the Nvidia's control panel and tried the same there with similar results, ive tried to do a "Rigorous Display Detection" on it and nothing came up.

I've tried just about everything tbh.

Somehow with all my twiddling ive managed to get a 2nd display on the windows control panel display screen, but unlike display 1 (showing as Acer V223W) it just says "2. Display Device on: VGA". but still my 2nd screen remains blank!?

Ive tested the monitor and it works fine, ive tested the cables and they both work fine. When i unplug the 2nd monitors cable from the back of the graphics card the message on the 2nd monitor's black screen changes from "No Signal" to "Cable Not Connected" so i presume there is so level of connection ... A:Secondary display refuses to work properly

the primary #1 must always be attached. sometimes the slots are numbered or have A & B marked near them.
I've also seen a Y-cable to split the video and the monitor ends were marked 1 & 2.

When both are attached, it appears you can get them to display the large 1 or 2 .

open any window (even a folder display) and drag it from the #1 to the number # monitor.
if it will slide beyond the #1 screen edge into #2, then your dual setup is correct.

Volume, Audio, And voice tab don't work on sound and audio devices. If I restart the pc right now it would probably work again. But for some reason it just doesn't work sometimes. Like right now i was using youtube. Then the IE went all white along with everything else. Thats when I know that the sound will no longer work unless I restart the pc. The sound tab is also all white and I can't put the volume up or down. All the sound options are all grey and I can't move anything. I was hoping you guys know what the problem might be.

Hello All

I have a Toshiba Portege A200 (PP415E). I have a problem with the keyboard as follows:

a) The Del key is dead as are the 'up' and 'left' arrow keys

b) when pressed the left button (below the touchpad) defaults to 'delete' (rather than open)

c) any USB mouse I use works initially OK, but occasionally a 'left click' of it (e.g in a Word document) will begin deleting text (cursor moves backwards)

The symptoms exist in XP Pro (any application), in Puppy Linux from live CD etc etc - so its not a software/OS problem.

Its also NOT a dirty keyboard - everything has been scrupulously cleaned. Ive also replaced the keyboard with a new one - and the problem persists.

I suspect a motherboard/keyboard chip problem and am looking for a part number/source for a new motherboard
can anyone point me in the right direction for more motherboard info/parts suppliers (UK preferred)

Many Thanks

A:Imput devices on Portege A200 do not work properly

HI Andrew

As you know such information is mostly for internal purposes and you will be very lucky if someone can offer this info. What you can do is to contact authorized service provider in your country and ask for help. They have access to Toshiba database and they can help you for sure.

From time to time check eBay. There you can find many hardware parts for Toshiba notebooks. With a little bit luck you will find used mainboard for few bucks.

I updated my hard drive last night and went from a 60 gig hard drive to a 320. I reinstalled windows xp no problem, and proceeded to reinstall all my drivers (first of course was my graphics and wireless card). However, as I was going through the drivers, my audio refused to install.

The site I have been getting all my drivers from is http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ca&lang=en&product=3177437

The only difference in operating system is that my 60 gig is Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 and this is Service Pack 3.

My sound card still works fine as since I have changed hard drives I have swapped them out and gone back to my 60 gig when I initially had issues with trying to connect to the internet and had to download the driver onto my external hard drive so I could get online with this one.

The only difference in hard drives is the size, they are both made by the same company.

Any help to getting my audio to work would be MUCH appreciated.

Also, this being an HP laptop with the touch sensitive music controls and quickplay, any idea on getting my quickplay working again would be apprecaited as well, just as a side quest for now =)

I am trying to put windows xp on it but it is not happening. I had problems with it and was advised to replace the hard drive which I did (upgraded to larger one at same time) and replaced the battery as this was old and needed replacing.

Please be honest - have I wasted my cash buying new hard drives etc - is it mendable or should I just chuck it, send the pieces back to the store and get a new laptop?

If it is mendable please give step by step instructions! I have some experience but am not an expert!

Alright here's my situation:

I have a Core2Duo PC running Vista Home Premium 32 bit, hooked up to my TV using a HDMI cable. This has been working fine for 2 years now. Yesterday I decided to add some more RAM to this PC (4 GB instead of the standard 2 GB to be exact). I know 32 bit will only read 3 GB but I was thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit later.

Anyway I booted up the computer, worked fine of course, even watched a movie or two without problems. Then this morning I booted up the PC and I suddenly noticed the volume icon saying that there were no audio devices detected! I checked under Hardware and there are no audio devices whatsoever! So my HDMI cable is still giving me picture but no sound! Seeing as I'm using onboard audio I immediately booted into the BIOS and although I couldn't find a specific option that said onboard audio I did see something audio related being "HDA" (I assume HD audio) on automatic, the other option was ACRealtek97 or something. However it was enabled so no luck there.

Does anyone know how all of a sudden my HDMI cable isn't providing audio anymore? I even checked my Nvidia card which also stated that HDMI audio was enabled.

I hope anyone can help me, thanks in advance.

A:my sound does not work properly

Hello, and welcome to techspot!

We need to know a bit more about your computer. Please fill in as much info as you know in your "profile".

A couple of questions:

1. How long have you had the computer?
2. Did it EVER have sound?

The problem is likely one of two things.

1. You have the volume on mute in your sound settings
2. You don't have the drivers installed.

Do you know how to check to see if it is problem #1?

I've got an HP dv7t-7000. I've a recent clean install on it and I cannot get the speakers to work properly. This particular machine comes with a pair of Triple Bass Reflex Subwoofers, which means that it has two run of the mill laptop speakers and an additional subwoofer for each. I have installed the latest drivers from the manufacturer. They actually don't have drivers for Win10, so I'm using the Win8.1 ones. The installation runs smoothly and I can see the Beats Audio control panel. However, only the normal laptop speakers are being driven. No sound comes out of the subwoofers.
After a lot of attempts with the manufacturer's drivers: installing with compatibility mode on, telling windows to update the drivers from the device manager, and tweaking every possible setting in the sound controls, I wound up in this thread. I followed the steps, essentially replacing the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC that came with the manufacturer's drivers with Win10's generic High Definition Audio Driver. Naturally, this has removed the Beats Audio control panel since it removed the previous drivers that came with it.
Win10's generic drivers made the left subwoofer work, but it stopped driving all of the right laptop speakers (the right subwoofer never actually worked).
There are 3 sound devices according to the device manager: High Definition Audio Device, Intel Audio1 and nVidia Audio1 (1 These names may not be accurate, I have no access to my computer right now). I suspect the Inte... Read more

This issue popped up I'd assume in the past few days, but I only noticed yesterday for the first time. I use a Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 (don't know if that's of any importance, but I figured I'd type in case it does) headset. I noticed, when playing a game, my mic was not working. I later went into Control Panel and into Sound to see what the problem was. Oddly enough, there was nothing listed in Playback or Recording. I still received (and can still receive) sound from the headset. When in game, I'm assuming the only reason it doesn't work is because the Steam (the game hosting client) client doesn't have any headset to detect, as windows does not. I've tested a different headset (of the exact same model) on my computer, exact same issue. I tested my headset on a different computer (again, of the exact same model; my dad and I have similar hardware, an XPS 8700). So the issue is definitely on my computer, and not with the headset.

Again, as I've stated: The headphones work fine, audio goes right through them. Yet it isn't being detected in the Sound tab of control panel. I'd assume the microphone works fine (Outside of Steam, where I mainly use it), though I'm not sure where I'd test this. Any ideas on what I need to do would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to this forum, so sorry if I didn't post any necessary information.

I updated my audio drivers as per windows update because I noticed I had some new updates. Well now my speakers are not as loud as they used to be. I really don't know a way to describe this other then that, they just do not sound like they used to. They sound like they are not reaching their maximum volume, even though the volume ( master and others ) are all the way up, maxed out. Also, my Dell and the Audio drivers come with an IDT control panel, I do not know how to set up the IDT control panel for best playback, and I do not know how to fix this issue. I am on a Dell XPS 1645 using Windows 7 Pro, any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Updated drivers, no sound does not work properly

The problem is that Windows update is not the best way to update drivers. Quite often the windows update drivers for hardware cause problems.Try this. Right click on Computer then properties. Now on the left hand side choose Device manager. Find Sound Video and Game controllers, expand it by double clicking on it. Find the IDT sound card, right click on it. Choose properties, then Driver. select Roll Back Driveror go to http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriversHome/NeedProductSelectionEnter your service tag from the bottom of the laptop in the Service tag box. Click Submit. The choose the Operating System and the IDT audio drivers, Download them and install them.Either one should work.Roger

Another was a speaker which said 'Via HD Audio'

If I remember correctly it should say realtek or something, but it didn't. None of them worked, but if I played a video it detected the sound from the video but I couldn't hear it.

Please someone help...

i currently own a Toshiba Satellite L755-1ED and sound is not working as it should for some weeks ago. When i try to play an audio file or a video, offline or online, sound works well for the first minutes and then suddenly disappears. I use Windows 7, and when that happens, sound is still being recognized for the system as you can see it in the volume control, but any sound comes from the speakers. However:
- If i pause the video and replay it in like 30 seconds, sound usually comes back. Also if i go to Sound Settings in +Hardware and Sound+ in the +Panel Control+, and then try to check if it works, it usually does after the first or the second attempt.
- If i use a headset sound always works perfectly.

I've already installed the last updates of my sound card and i don't know where the problem might be. Some help would be welcomed.
Thanks a lot and sorry for my English (it's not my native language).

That?s very interesting. Speakers port has small switch inside that helps notebook to ?recognize? that headphones are connected and when you connect headphones internal speakers will be disabled and sound comes through speakers only.

On some machines it is possible to switch between internal and external speakers manually

When you open control panel is there ?Realter HD audio manager? available or maybe ?Smart audio??

I can't hear a proper dolby surround with my headphones. I think the reason for this is that the dolby settings of my Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card and Windows 7 are not "synchronized". I just watched a Gears Of War 2 walkthrough video, and weapon fire, explosions and talking, that came from the sides, back or far away, were very low or not audible at all.

OS: Windows 7 32-bit

How can I set this correctly?

A:Dolby surround of my sound card doesn't work properly

Well; you should be able to hopefully adjust that in the audio properties/settings by right clicking the speaker icon and selecting the sound card and if it is surround like you say; then there should be settings somewhere in there to adjust that. Also, if your sound card came with software like mine did; you might be able to adjust the settings using that as well. I cant say for certain 100% what settings etc. because i dont have the same sound card as you do. Hope this helps ya some. If not, post back and we can go from there.

So, I got my latop (Pavilion g series) a few years ago, and I had two stipulations when I was shopping for one: I wanted it to have Windows 7 and not 8, and I wanted it to have a Blu-Ray drive. I eventually found the one I have now (g7-1322nr), which I believe came with an internal Blu-Ray drive added to replace the original DVD one. Fast-forward to this past summer (roughly), when I got hit with the Windows 10 update and decided to go ahead with it, figuring I could revert back to 7 if it screwed up anything or too many important things. Everything was fine, until this past week, when I got a couple new Blurays and went to try them out. 1. I can only get the drive to open some of the time. Sometimes it opens fine, other times I need to repeatedly press the button on it.2. If I put in a disc, it will read the disc some of the time; sometimes it just doesn't do anything, and I go to This PC in the file explorer and it says there's no disc inserted, even when I double click the disc drive or right-click and hit open in my media software. This happens with both BRs and DVDs, but it's a lot more common with BRs.3. When I can get it to where its reading the disc and it's a Bluray, sometimes the menu won't come up at all.4. If I can actually get the movie to play, BR or DVD, the drive will sometimes stop working during the playthrough, and I have to start the whole process over again, as if the drive lost power or rebooted itself or something. I've been getting the distin... I have a Dell Inspiron 710m with XP Pro SP3. When I press any of the number or letter keys nothing happens in Wordpad or any browser or anything requiring letters. The keys make sounds when pressed (a Windows sound) and some close open windows and stuff like that. Also when I left click on icons, they stay selected after I let go of the buttons. I checked in the Regional settings and it's all set to US keyboard. I think this has happened to me a long time ago on another computer with XP.

Hey guys, so I will try my best to give you all the details so you can help me because I am about to give up on this...

So I wanted a laptop really badly and bought it from a guy for about 60-70$. The laptop is MSI cr630. He told me that he have reinstalled the windows 10 and cleared all the dust inside the laptop so it's like a brand new and works like a charm.

Unfortunatelly the "brand new" laptop stopped working the first day I got it. At first it seemed to work pretty well, but suddenly the display sometimes started to get black for 0.5 seconds or so. Later that day I wanted to install all the updates it needed, so I started to install sound drivers and so on, I didnt finish doing what I started when the computer went black... I started figuring out what the hell could it be, I removed the battery, switched rams, read the whole damn internet. I could see a very dim screen so I thought it was backlight or an inverter but then I learnt that my laptop does not have an inverter so I thought maybe there was a bad connection somewhere or something, I took it apart, reconnected some of the things but everything was the same. I tried connecting the display to my pc's screen through VGA but it didn't work then I tried to connect the laptop to my TV through HDMI and that one worked! Wanted to check out what BIOS version is mine and if it needs and update, but I didn't had much time because after like 40 seconds I got a windows error saying:

Ok so I had to reinstall windows XP because my OS would not load and I got all the drivers reinstalled, diagnostic ran smooth and everything came up working ok etc but my device manager won't recognize anything! The compy says my audio mixers are not there, my USB devices are not working, hardware wizard is not responding, microsoft updates are not working, Dell's driver downloads are calling out for something that isn't there and I really really need this fixed ASAP so I can get to my external HD. So I tried putting an apple sticker on my Dell in hopes it would accept its new identity and start not sucking, but alas this did not work. If you help me fix this I'll seriously be your new best friend... I have apple stickers. ;-)

A:Solved: Dude! I don't get my Dell! No devices in device manager?! USB and sound don't work?!

Sometimes in the past week or so, when I was on some website (no, I don't remember which), I must have muted the sound (when the phone rang, or something). I closed all the windows before restoring the sound, and now I do not have sound on ANY website (or anywhere else, like when booting up.) I've noticed in the past that when you mute the sound on one website, it stays muted for all sites, and stays that way until you un-mute it. However, I can't remember where I did it.

Is there any way to find out which page I cut the sound on, or is there some other way to restore it? I've gone through all (that I can think of) the audio devices, and none of them are muted. What do I do to restore sound?

Thanks, in advance.

A:No Audio; I Muted The Sound Somewhere.

You could check the Sounds and Audio Devices settings. Go Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices. Make sure "Mute" is not checked.

I am having an issue that has been an on and off problem for the past month. I currently am using a browser called torch which is a chrome style browser. But my main browser is firefox. Whenever firefox is open I cannot browse the web and when I try web pages do not load on any browser that I try to use, although I am able to use both ipads that are in the house and any applications/programs works fine with the internet. But ones I close firefox all other web browsers on my laptop work fine. What could potentially cause this and what other details could I include that would be more helpful to you guys thanks in advance I have already attempted to restart my modem several times.

A:internet does not work on laptop but works on other devices

This may be a conflict between browsers, but first: have you updated Firefox recently? Or do you have it set to update automatically?

This might help, it's from FF Help pages:
Fix slowness, crashing, error messages and other problems | Firefox Help

Scroll down to "Fix problems connecting to Websites after updating Firefox."

Using the FF Help can give you great assistance. (Menu Bar, top left in FF, click "Help".)

Alright, I've been trying to find anyone with a similar problem, tried some different things but none worked.
I have a jack on the side of the laptop as usual, where I plug my headphones which do work perfectly. The laptop's internal speakers also work. The problem comes when I try to plug in external speakers. So far I've tried 3 sets, 2 of them with a jack plug and one with a normal USB plug. The issue is with all 3 that only one half works properly, the other is very quiet and distorted. I've also tried streaming sound onto my phone and plugging the speakers into the phone itself, but same deal as before.

Is it a hardware issue? If yes, why do headphones and the internal speakers work?

If anyone has any ideas I'd be thankful.

I'm running windows 10 home 64bit on a Lenovo y500

A:Can't get external speakers to work properly on laptop

It is common to find that different jack plugs have slightly different sizes and tolerances, and some connect better than others, and also that the sockets on laptops are subject to wear, and will lose some connectivity with one or both channels. If you can find an adapter - with a short length of cable for strain relief, and preferably an angled male plug connector - that fits well to both to the laptop and headphones, but also to external speakers, that may be a solution.

Some audio control panels allow for output to other sockets, if the audio chip is capable - for instance not only the headphone jack but also the microphone jack, which may be less worn, and may be a better connection for your speaker jacks - at the loss of an external microphone connection. This may not be an option on some laptops.

Otherwise, the socket on the laptop may need to be replaced or adjusted so that the contacts connect all of your plugs equally well - a delicate job best performed by a qualified repair technician. Laptop motherboards are quite flimsy, and movement of the jack through strain on the headphone cable etc., can cause board cracking and solder joint or copper trace failures.

Hi all, Currently i am using laptop HP Probook 450 G3-X4K55PA, i need to use Ubuntu for my work, so i installed Ubuntu 16.04. My laptop doesn't work well with this OS, when i plug a monitor via HDMI port, my laptop hangs, it can't work anymore, so i must turn off the power. When i put my laptop in sleep mode, it can't come back, it is hanged, i must turn off power to take it back. I tried to install different Ubuntu version many times, but it still has the issues. I install WIndows on my laptop, it works well. Please help to solve the issues with Ubuntu. Regards,Han.

A:My laptop doesn't work properly with Ubuntu

Hello, Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post. I am afraid this PC officially supports Windows OS only and Linux-based like Ubuntu are not officially supported. Therefore, you may experience certain issues while with Ubuntu due to the lack of proper drivers loaded there (in the Kernel). Ubuntu 16.04 uses Kernel 4. You may try older Ubuntu versions such as with kernel 3.13/3.16/3.19 - Ubuntu 14 LTSYou can also try to post at the Ubuntu forums where Linux/Ubuntu gurus may be able to provide you with specific advice about the problem >> https://askubuntu.com/>> https://ubuntuforums.org/  An alternative option would be to install Windows as a main (host) operating system but run Linux Ubuntu as a virtual one from inside Windows using free software like Oracle VirtualBox >> https://www.virtualbox.org/>> https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Screenshots
