Acer Aspire 5742 no power from dc jack, replaced it, still no power

Q: Acer Aspire 5742 no power from dc jack, replaced it, still no power

I replaced the DC jack on an Acer today with a new one. When the laptop has the battery in the power LED shows a power source(unfortunately the battery is dead). When I remove the battery and plug in the charger to the new DC jack, no LED. Hitting the power button results in a flash from the power button light and power LED for an instant but no POST or boot. I tried different chargers as I have a few universals laying around so that's not it.....What's the problem?

Preferred Solution: Acer Aspire 5742 no power from dc jack, replaced it, still no power

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Acer Aspire 5742 no power from dc jack, replaced it, still no power

Maybe not enough power on my acer laptop the charger says the output is 19 volts 3.4 amps and it runs fine without the battery installed, When I dont have the battery installed and the charger pluged in there is no indication that the changer is indeed plugged in and also when I turn it on I usually press the button just a bit longer to turn it on

My R13 (R7-371T) DC Power Jack is loose and continues to flip-flop between charging and on battery, despite being plugged in.  This is the second time I have had this problem! The first time it was under warranty, so I sent it in to Acer who replaced it.  Warranty period is now over, but I have the problem again. I do use the laptop quite a bit, probably 10 hours per day, and in two different locations (home and office), so it gets plugged in and unplugged probably four times a day, every day.  But this in itself should not be a reason that it has this problem... Any suggestions on what to do here?

I have a Z50-70, and I had a slight accident with the power jack for the charger.  The old one could still work, but I ordered a replacement.  I installed it yesterday and it didn't work at all.  It wouldn't even boot on battery alone.  After troubleshooting, I got it to power up, but the battery was nearly out of charge and still wouldn't charge with the new power jack.  I was able to get it to boot a couple times, but windows 10 says that there is no battery detected and dies soon after. When  I can get the battery working, it shows a white LED for power and an amber LED for the battery when the charger is unplugged.  When I plug the charger in, the battery LED goes away.  The normal operation that I have seen if that both LEDs are always on. When the battery is low, that LED turns amber, but I have never seen that LED go off (which supports why Windows sees no battery). I have tried tearing all of the unnecessary parts out and starting it with the essentials.  I have tried pulling the power and battery and holding down the power button to drain all the power from the laptop.  That helps and I can get it to boot for just a few seconds (my laptop setup only takes about 10-15 seconds to POST and boot. If you have any ideas of what I can try to fix this, please let me know.  I have requested a replacement because one of the ground pins on the connector for the motherboard backed out of the connector onc... Also, the voltage at the pins on the laptop that connect to the battery are all 1.5-1.7 volts with the battery removed and the charger plugged in.  That seems strange to me.  If anyone has a working Z50-70 and could test that, I would feel a lot better.  Thanks!

Hi guys,

I just replaced a bad T61 power jack ( I'm sure it must've been bad since two of the wire connections came loose from the jack itself). The new power jack had all the connections to the jack just fine, so I plugged it in, connected it to mobo, put everything together and still no power.

Could it be that when the connections came loose originally the motherboard got damaged in the process? I felt almost sure it was the dc power jack as soon I saw those loose connections, but i guess not?

EDIT: To give you guys a better idea. I bought one of these: T61 DC Power Jack

I also tried plugging in the charger (which I've tested with a multimeter, and it is also a new chrarger) into the NEW port, then trying to get power from the contacts on the mobo connector (white piece in the picture). I tried pushing down with the negative connector to one of the black wire contacts, and pushing the positive tip to one of the red wire contacts and did not see any power there, so I'm wondering if I tested it wrong?

Hello,I have a Z50-75 laptop which has had power jack issues in the past. The jack has been replaced several time. The most recent time it was replaced, I proceeded to use it thay night as normal, and then closed the laptop to put it in sleep mode and went to bed. The next morning, the computer is completely unresponsive. It had not moved from the position on my desk at all. Bought a nen charger to no avail. Will not light up in any way, does not show any signs of life (no fan noise, no cd drive eject, etc).  Have tried troubleshooting anything I could think of; dont see any visible issues to thr hardware. If anyone has any ideas or if I could get a hold of Lenovo Support, that would be great. Spent nearly an hour looking for a customer support email but it seems it isn't that simple haha.  I really like my laptop and would like to see it working again. Have had about 3yrs. Thanks. Edit-typos.

The computer stopped seeing the adapter and will not run on electricity.  Will only run on the battery.  I take the battery out and it dies immediately.  I replaced the power jack and the computer still won't run on electricity.  Only the battery.  I've unplugged the adapter long enough for the led to go out and still won't book with only the power adapter plugged in.  It's not the adapter because that adapter works on another computer which is how I charge the battery on my 1545.  What else should I do?

Hello! Sorry, im new around here! :S

Basically, my HP DV6-3065EA running Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) laptop died. I went into a computer shop and asked how much a simple diagnostic test would be to find out how much a repair would be. He quoted me ?90. Phew, jog on! That wasn't going to happen!
Anyway, I decided to replace the power jack. No hard job, just a simple unplug and plug back in job. (looks abit like this Hp power jack image by chikyeung on Photobucket). I replaced it; everything is running fine.
I tried to put a USB pen drive into a usb socket. Didn't work. Tried another, didn't work. I have tried several devices and they all work on other computers but don't seem to be working on mine.
I have been trawling the internet for answers, and as of yet, nothing -.-! I wouldn't call myself a novice, trust me, I've tried everything, uninstalling and reinstalling all of the USB drivers, checking bits of the registry.etc. Nothing. So today, i thought, right, WIPE THE COMPUTER! I backed up everything, went back to scratch.
Tried another USB, didn't work.! Im completely puzzled!

Please help!!!

Thanks for reading! ;D

Oh, one more thing. When the laptop was unusable, I removed the hard drive and put it into another computer to retrieve some files. Could this have anything to do with it?

Any help is greatly acknowledged!!

A:USB Ports Stopped working after an Internal Power Jack is replaced.

It sounds rather as if your new part somehow isn't diffusing 5 volts to the correct circuits, which is what USB relies upon. Could be a bent pin or misaligned plug on those pins, or a broken wire.

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742, IntelCore i3-380M
I am attaching a few pictures of what comes on the screen when I turn it on.
Even in safe mode it does not let me log in, it attempts repairs, it fails and then goes to the black screen with the white cursor.
If I try to start windows normally it loads the logo and then goes to the black screen.
Yesterday, in an attempt to do repairs it was replacing invalid security drivers or something like that and it was taking ages so I had to turn it off.
For the last week it took very long to start up, failing to configure windows but it would eventually let me log in.
Since yesterday I am only getting the black screen. it is windows 7 by the way.

i need a very quick reply please

My Acer Aspire 5742 would repeatedly turn on, but then shut off quickly after. It displayed a black Acer screen saying press F-2 in which I did, but did nothing for me. Later, I decided to take out the RAM, Hard Drive, and the CMOS battery. I tried powering the laptop with and without those pieces, yet it did not work and resulted in the laptop displaying a black screen and still shutting on and off repeatedly. I've heard the fans going throughout the whole process. Please help me solve this issue quickly. Thank you!

I'm getting a message that my laptop is recommending a new battery, however, I can't find anything on the settings etc that tells me what type/size battery to buy - without having to open up the unit first.  Can someone please advise what I need to buy and if any special instructions to change out a battery?

A:My Acer Aspire 5742 is recommending a new battery ...

To help you understand, what type and size of the battery is required for your laptop, you can check it by removing the battery from the back side of the laptop.- To do this, first of all please make sure you turned off the laptop and the power connections.- Now turn the laptop to the back side and pulled the clips to remove battery, which is the only removable part from the outerside.- Now you can check the specification of the battery and find it online on the manufacturers website.- Your battery is of 4400 mAh Capacity, 6-cell.- Ac adapter input is AC 120/230 V (50/60 Hz). Hope this will help you.

Hallo Leute,

So I got an Apple bluetooth keyboard through the post today, and was really excited to start using it. However, when trying to add the device by going Start>Devices and Printers>Add a Device, my computer doesn't detect the keyboard at all.

I went into my device manager to see if I could find the problem, but it turns out that there is no bluetooth adapter visible there, nor can I seem to find any drivers on my actual computer. I tried downloading all the bluetooth drivers from the acer website, but none of them seem to do anything...

I'm pretty sure my laptop has bluetooth, as this is what the internet has told me, so I would really appreciate any help at all!

Hi there,

I have the Acer Aspire 5742 series laptop and I am suffering from overheating issues - temperatures are staying around the 60C mark with just google chrome open, on idle it doesn't go below 50C, when doing anything intensive it goes up to 70C+, sometimes even 90C+. I cannot run a virus scan with McAfee because it just overheats the laptop.

I've got some arctic silver 5 thermal paste (left over from when I did a fix on a Packard Bell machine) and am thinking about replacing the fan - how easy is it to replace the fan and heatsink? Is this worth it and will it fix the overheating issue?

Furthermore, is there anything else I can do to fix the overheating? I want to be able to cure this overheating problem once and for all. Thanks for your help.

A:Acer Aspire 5742 Overheating issues

First thing you should do is get rid of both Mcafee and Chrome and see how it runs,

As far as remodeling a laptop that depends on your skills
If it has a ssd in it or not that would be another thing to do which will cut down on heat and of course speed the sucker up a lot

After Mcafee and Chrome are gone do this for us,
Also make sure you use the Mcafee removal tool
How to uninstall or re-install supported McAfee products using the Consumer Products Removal tool
Use Clean boot,
Click Start and type in the search box,
Click on the suggestion on top or hit the Enter key,
Go to the Startup section and take some screen shots for a complete list,
Go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide All Microsoft services,
Repeat the screen shots,
See the links above my signature on how to take and upload screen shots here,

Hi - Firstly, I'm not a computer geek, although I'm reasonably literate. My Acer Aspire 5742 (bought May 2011) has suffered a hard disk failure.

When I bought it, I made the Acer eRecovery disks and kept them safe. On buying a new hard drive last week (exact Hitachi 500GB model) I find recovery disk no.1 boots up Windows 7 ok but does not recover the file structure as I get the message "insufficient disk space to copy files".

I understand that Acer disks are partitioned into 3 areas and the recovery disks cannot see the area where the recovery files have to be copied, and hence the Windows message. I researched this on the 'net and find Acer produce a partitioning software file that once could be downloaded. However, I see that file is no longer available on the 'net and on speaking to Acer they want me to part with £80 for them to provide technical support. I would have thought the partitioning software should have been included in the recovery disks but it seems not so.

Can anyone help in providing me with a suitable solution without forking out £80? Many thanks.

For the past few weeks my computer has been prone to randomly freezing while websites are open and i get the "not responding" message at the top of every website and cannot do anything or click anywhere until i hold down the off button and force the machine to turn off and on again, and even then it doesn't always work fine when it's back on.

As of yesterday when i log in the laptop seems to think that the left click button has been pressed and when i move the mouse around it highlights folders on my desktop. When i press the left click it brings up what the right click button should do, whereas the right click button does nothing. Whenever i click on icons on the desktop nothing happens and i can't access any programs (start menu, firefox, etc) until i press ctrl + alt + delete and open the task manager. As soon as task manager is opened (and i can see that it is not doing any processes) i can use my left click and go on firefox/start menu etc. However the right click still does nothing.

I've got AVG, Malware Bytes and CCleaner, have run several cleanups and defragmenters. Nothing has brought up any problems or viruses etc. I'm just really starting to run out of ideas of what i can do to sort this out. I'd rather not have to back everything up and perform a factory reset!

If anyone can shed some light onto this problem i'd really appreciate it!

A:Windows 7/Acer Aspire 5742 problem!

Without more information (system specs) we'd be "shooting in the dark".
Might get lucky and hit the target, but maybe not.

One shot in the dark...

If you have a wireless mouse,
and the usb dongle is plugged into a USB3 port (aka Super Speed USB),
(instead of a USB2 port),
this may cause erratic behavior.
I have seen this happen with some Logitech mice.

Have you tried a different mouse?

Hello everyone, I purchased an Acer Aspire 5742 Series Laptop . That is an I3 processor.

MY daughter was having problems with it simply turning off. After looking at and running Real Temp and Prime 95, I believed it was simple over heating .

It is under warranty so I took it in for repair, I just picked it up and they said the fan and vents needed cleaning, that is why it is getting hot and shutting down.

Now I re-ran Prime 95 and it still shut down after 1 hour roughly. Real Temp said it was 89 Degrees C.

So is this normal for laptops??? I costume build my PC and it never shuts down on running Prime 95. Even I did overclocked it.

SO what recommendation do you have? I can take it back (warranty) but I do not have the faith they will fix it ! Since I say no BSOD I am not sure any reports will help. It is a Clean windows 7 install.

A:Acer Aspire 5742 Series Laptop Over Heating

Hello Becky -

By design, laptops just aren't as efficient as desktops when it comes to cooling. Components are bunched together in a small space and the fan is usually underpowered and doesn't move a lot of air. Generally speaking, laptops need to be used on a hard, flat surface like a tabletop and not on a pillow, bedspread, or even a lap. Vents and fan will surely be blocked adding to the heat build up. Many people even use a laptop cooling pad to help with air circulation.

Laptop cooler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But there's another consideration that may prompt you to take the laptop back in for warranty service. It's possible that a heat sink or thermal paste was improperly installed during production. No amount of cleaning will correct that kind of problem. Some additional thoughts:

My Acer Aspire 5742 had been running well for the past 5 years or so without any issues, when all of a sudden I encountered an issue when I tried booting it up today. A couple of days ago, Windows Update did its usual thing and installed some updates before the computer shut down. Whenever it's doing an update I always make sure the charger is plugged in just so that the power supply doesn't cut out / the battery doesn't run out which may cause issues with the update. The laptop shut down as normal. Upon startup, a message appears saying "Failure configuring Windows Update. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer." I have left it running for at least 8 hours in the hope that it will "revert", but nothing seems to have happened. I have given up and also tried booting in safe mode, but to no avail. Any ideas on what to do? I have done some light research into it on the web, but none of the solutions seem to match. Also, whilst I am asking this question; if I were to completely reformat the laptop (in order to get rid of this issue) how would I go about getting the OEM locked key for the Windows 7 as it came pre-installed? I currently have no way to access the Acer Recovery part on the laptop so a complete reformat seems like the easiest thing to do as I have nothing I want to keep on the harddrive.

My laptop, aspire E1-510P will not power on. A blue light will come on for a few seconds then it shuts off. What is the problem & What can I do to fix it?

A:My acer aspire E1-510 will not power on

On Acer Aspire notebooks, blue light indication has different meanings depending on whether you are using your laptop on battery or by connecting it to a power adapter. To know more, the following link can be helpful:http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9674/~/how-does-the-battery-indicator-light-on-my-a... In your case, it is recommended to check if there is any issue with the battery. To do this, remove the battery from your laptop and connect the laptop directly to power adapter. If the laptop works fine now, there may be some issue with the battery. To confirm this, you can try using another battery (if possible) and see if that resolves the issue. Hope this will help you.

Hi I wonder if anyone can help. I have an Acer Aspire One 725 it has a broken screen. I have a replacement screen and have checked that it is the correct one for this model. When I replaced the screen (I have done this with other laptops) the laptop would not power on - nothing happened, no power light, no HDD activity, no fan. The battery did not have much charge (if any) so was plugged into the mains. The battery charge light was not on either. I then replaced the old broken screen (but did not screw everything back into place) it started up with no problems. However once I switched off to fix the screws/facia etc I have the same issue no activity other than the first time the power switch light flickered a couple of times but no other activity.

The only difference I now have is that the battery charge light comes on but still no activity.

I do not think this is the 'black screen of death' as that seems to occur with the powerlight on but no other activity - I do not have a light on the power.

Any help gratefully received.

Please help!!! I bought a new Acer Aspire 5742 laptop (Core i3, 3G Ram, 500GB Hard,) few days ago. It has Pre-installed operating system, Windows 7 Home Basic. I’s told to make system backup and I did and saved it on hard drive rather making a backup Disk. Unfortunately a virus or some type of programme invaded and the whole window corrupted in few seconds. I tried my best to restore windows using Acer e-recovery manager first by restoring them to an earlier point but that didn’t work. Later I tried to use system image I’d already made but same problem was there. Getting freaked out, I restored windows to factory settings but it was really dis-hearting to see that an error occurred so windows could n’t be restored to factory settings. So I’ve to install a pirated version of windows 7 ultimate. Now… please tell me that is there any way to restore original windows 7 in my laptop. I’ve heard that there is a recovery disc for my laptop provided by Acer from which I can restore Windows. Is this true? As I’ve formatted the windows and also deleted the backup I’ve created earlier. Is there any Re-installation CD/DVD which Acer provides? And Drivers Disc as well?? If is there any, how can I get? Please help me. I’m so worried.

Here's the deal.
My son has an acer Aspire laptop for his school work. He has several assignments he has to do online.
Problem... the internet connection won't stay (we're wireless) if the power cord is plugged in. As soon as you unplug the power cord, the internet hooks up, but if you plug in the power, you lose the connection.

Is this an Acer problem, or is something configured wrong.

FWIW, I also have an Acer laptop and do NOT have this problem with our network and dh has a toshiba and also has no trouble being connected with power. It's just ds's computer. It is frustrating for him to be doing his work and have to stop, and maybe lose his work, cause the battery has to be recharged.

Thanks in advance for help or advice....

A:Acer aspire... can't have internet and power together

The first thing i'd suggest is a motherboard problem, i know it sounds like a harsh situation... but i had one come into the shop the other day, it got sent back to Acer and they supposedly replaced the motherboard and now it works, they would have also reinstalled windows, so maybe that can be a place to start???

I have a Acer Aspire AX3400G slimline case and am experiencing a problem when powering up. When pressing the power button the computer begins to power up then stops. The fan is running but nothing else. If I unplug then replug the computer it will start normally. This started intermittently but now is doing it every time I turn it on. I believe I need a new power supply? The power supply is a Liteon PS 5221-9 230 max watt. Does this sound like a power supply issue? And if so could someone direct me to a good replacement PSU? I only use the computer for Email, Facebook etc. and don't require any serious power usage.

Hello, all. Thank you for reading this. I could really use some help. There is work I need to finish, but can't. Below is the problem and what I have done so far. My laptop [Model: Acer Aspire V5 572P] was working fine today. I simply closed it (pull the screen down to shut it) while it was on, put it in a protected bag and took it home (4 minutes). When I opened it again, I noticed it was off. It would not power on via the power buttonI plugged it in and noticed the charger and power lights did not light up. It would not turn on with the charger connected.I heard something moving around inside and it appears that a screw inside the laptop case broke and was moving around inside the laptop while it was closed and on. I'm quite sure my charger and battery are ok. I've never had an issue with either. The battery was at about 42% when I closed the laptop. Can anyone help me and let me know what I should do? Could a screw (covered in plastic) cause any damage inside? WHAT I HAVE DONEThus far, I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sg8tUXZL... I did the following:- I tried the battery reset button. I then plugged it in and nothing. No lights. No power.- I removed the battery. I then plugged it in. Nothing. No lights. No power.- I removed the hard drive. Same thing. Nothing. I have a memory slot, but no additional memory, so I can't remove any RAM.I'm quite sure my adapter is working and the batter was fine.Anyone have any idea... Read more

if you are out of warranty, you can try to open it and look about that "noise" inside your laptop.if you are still under warranty, give Acer support service a call. you did a lot of troubleshoot so i don't have more to add.

I FINALLY found the solution for the power-off/sleep problem; Go to Control PanelClick on DevicesUnder System Devices  find .....Intel Management Engine Interfaceclick on it, then right click to find propertiesunder Driver it will tell you which version you have.Mine was ver. 11 --- which is the culprit.I choose to roll driver back to 9.5.xxOnce I did that roll back.....I no longer have the shut down issue.Hope that works for you.

I am currently helping a friend with his lap top. The computer is An Acer Aspire 5315 series (Model ICL50). I believe I have narrowed the problem down to the power system. First of all, while the charger is connected, the charging indicator light does not come on. If I press the power button while it is attached to the charger, The screen will quickly flash the "Acer" logo, then shut off once more. The machine will not turn on at all without the battery attached.

What I want to know is if my suspicions are correct. I believe the problem is the charging port. Does anyone know if these particular computers are known to have this problem? Is their any definitive way to test this? I do not believe the problem to be the cord itself because the little green light is on, and does not appear to be damaged or stressed in any way. And the lap top did boot up once without a problem, but shortly after logging on, began to beep loudly (battery low warning?) before shutting off.

power on problem with acer aspire z3-615

A:my acer aspire z3-615 is not turning on, the power...

Sorry to hear your Aspire system is not powering on. You can try a power reset by pressing and holding the power button down for 10-12 seconds. It should come on at that point. If not, we would recommend repair. At that point please contact the Acer support number for your region/country from http://www.acer.com/worldwide/.
