Lenovo Yoga 900S - quick review

Q: Lenovo Yoga 900S - quick review

Hello everyone,

Thanks to Lenovo I had the opportunity to test and use the new Yoga 900S. As I also have Yoga 3 Pro I'll also compare the two.

Size, weight and build quality.
Yoga 900S is smaller and lighter (by 200 grams). However, they're both skinny 12.8mm thick.
The materials appear to be the same, but somehow 900S has much more metallic feel to it. It also feels more sturdy. It might be related to the smaller size of the 900S. The case on the inside has more of a leather feel to it compared to the rubbery feel in Y3P.

Keyboard:

I have mixed feelings with this one, because:
+ dedicated F~ key row - great!
+ 2 level backlight - love it too.
- much lower key travel compared to Y3P, but still comfortable enough.
? awkward placement of the right shift key. This could just be me, as I got used to Y3P's layout, which had the right shift key on the left side of the up arrow key instead of the right side.

Touchpad:
Slightly smaller, but still comfortable to use. I have no remarks. It does its job. It happened couple of times that the cursor jumped to the bottom right corner when I tried to click using left index finger while swiping with the right index finger. Not sure what happened, but it was so minor I'm suprised I still remember it did!

Screen:
The model I received has a Full HD screen (1920 x 1080). I've seen 1440p being mentioned around the net, but this particular model definitely has a FHD screen. I currently do not have any tools to measure the specific properties of the screen, but it does look very good. Colours are vibrant, and the contrast is also very good. I like this resolution, as there's no need to change the DPI of the screen to make desktop items bigger. Some applications do not work very well with any DPI other than 100%. Also, unlike Y3P, which has a pentile pixel arrangement I believe 900S has regular 3 subpixels per pixel matrix.
Unlike Y3P, 900S has a full-glass front. There's a plastic stripe right above the hinge in Y3P.
It was announced it has an inbuilt active digitizer, but as this one did not have the pen I could not test it.
The touchscreen is accurate and responsive. In 100% DPI mode some of the items might be too small so you should consider increasing it if you use touch a lot.

CPU:
Yoga 3 Pro: Core m 5y70 1.1GHz (2.8GHz turbo)
Yoga 900S: Core m7 6y75 1.2GHz (3.1 GHz turbo)

The newer Skylake CPU in 900S is an improvement, but not a huge one. There's not much to tell about the CPU itself... The first m series processor disappointed some people, but I have never had any problems with either. What's very satisfying is that this time Lenovo delivered a laptop according to Intels promises - 100% passive cooling. I only ran PassMark test (results below), but if you'd like me to run some other test please let me know.

GPU:
This is supposedly a big improvement over the Broadwell SoC, and judging by the benchmarks it is true. I started a 4k video on a freshly started 900S and there was almost no change in the CPU utilisation and the video played without any issues.

Storage:
This unit came with a 512SSD. It's a PCI-X4 M.2 card based on Samsung chips. I run Crystaldiskmark and... I was blown away. This SSD is seriously FAST.

For a comparison the results from the 256GB Y3P:

Ports:
On the right side we see exactly the same set of ports, yet with fewer controls. The volume and rotation lock buttons are gone while the recovery button went to the other side. Big plus, really big plus for moving the power button further towards the screen, as it's extremely easy to press it accidentally on Y3P. Imagine holding it with two hands by the sides... yeah. The button itself is also bit skinnier which also helps.

On the left side:
Exactly the same charging port as on Y3P, however this time the bit in the middle is orange not yellow. From here onwards more changes. Instead of another USB 3.0 port and an HDMI port we get a single USB C port which can cover both tasks (i.e. USB port or video-out). The next one is the recovery button. Unfortunately there is no more SD card slot. Not a deal breaker, but I'll be missing it a bit

Benchmark:
I ran Passmark's PerformanceTest. Some results are suprising, but it could be related to some differences in the conditions (running apps, drivers, etc).

I couldn't help myself and also had to take a peek inside 900S on the left, Y3P on the right. After removing the screws around the edge the cover comes off easily. As you can see there's absolutely no fan inside the 900S. Not sure why the speakers also got pushed back a bit towards the back, but alike Y3P they provide suprisingly good and loud enough sound.

Battery life.

Compared to Y3P the battery's capacity grew from 44Wh to 53Wh
I'm happy to anounce this time Lenovo definitely got it right. The advertised 10.5 hours is easily achievable. I used it at work everyday last week and I got runtimes between 8:01 to 10:52 (just powercfg output). I've yet to run a synthetic batterytest though.

Notes and summary
It's a real pleasure working on the 900S. As I'm constantly on the road it has the perfect size to be carried around. I'm happy Lenovo decided to somewhat split the premium Yoga series. Now, we have a thicker, but much more powerful Yoga 900, and still the thinnest convertible 900S tied with Y3P. Both have addressed different issues with the Y3P gives user a choice to choose the one which is closer to his or hers requirements. It's style and extreme size catches people's attention. I was really surprised once, when one of my clients directly asked me "Is that a Yoga?" If there's anything you'd like me to test go ahead. I'll try to make it clearer whether this device is for you or not!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

There are very little documentation for a lenovo yoga 900s.I would like to know if I can connect two displays to my lenovo yoga 900s over usb type c. I am looking for a hub that will work on my device and will include at least one USB 2.0, 2x HDMI (one can be VGA) and an ethernet port. Can you recomend any?

A:Does lenovo yoga 900s (900s not 900) usb type c supports thunderbolt 3? Can I connect two displays?

Hello and welcome,

I can't answer your question directly  but looking at the base spec, the implication is USB-C but not Thunderbolt, single external display supported.

Hello experts, I am suddenly having a problem with my Yoga 900s not sleeping properly. I will close the lid, and the machine will stay alert (power light steady and not blinking). Then, when I try to wake it, the screen will remain blank, and I have to hard reboot. I am perplexed as to what is causing this issue. The laptop worked last night, and as far as I can tell, no updates or programs have been installed since then. Power settings are all fine. Laptop is set to sleep when lid is closed. CPU and memory usage seem fine. I've tried multiple reboots. Please let me know if you've encountered this before. I'm at my wit's end since nothing has changed since yesterday. Thanks. - Archana

The trackpad might break me here... it's absolutely terrible if you're the kind of user that likes to use single finger click and two finger right click exclusively. You can set it up for this behaviour but it basically disables the entire bottom third of the trackpad.

Are there tactile click locations for left and right click in the bottom corners?  Or is it totally "tap" sensing?  Mine shipped out yesterday and this was one of my concerns.  Another option that just went on sale, the ThinkPad X1 Tablet, has dedicated buttons like a traditional ThinkPad.  It's much pricier for the same hardware, though, and I like the Yoga flexibility compared to a Surface type setup.

Hi, my Yoga 900s has D-drive (named LENOVO) and it includes drivers as well as installation files for two applications (McAfee and YMC, Yoga Mode Control). I'm thinking of deleting this part and repartitioning my harddrive to increase the size of C-drive. I found some information suggesting that in this case OneKey Recovery migt not work, but I did not find any definitive about it. Does any of you know whether there is indeed harm on doing what I'm planning?

Hi All,3 weeks ago I was between the Yoga 900 with 16 GB ram and the X360 Spectre with only 8 GB. Then I was shure to buy the right notebook with the Yoga 900. Positive-Design-Flexibility-Touchscreen feedback Negative-Mouse/Touchpad (the two finger option as right click never worked, and the right click itself is only via usb mouse or via touch possible, the touchpad of my yoga does not work from beginning)-the screen flares sometimes after opening the notebook-the reaction after reopening the notebook is very slow and sometime fast enough-the battery life could be better But NO right click...!!!! Has anyone the same issue? I have reinstalled the drivers, i have checked and unchecked every option - really dissatisfying. I am an IT professionall and I don't get the problem - now I have to finish first my study (1 month to go), afterwards I will send my yoga to Lenovo! Cheers

I think it's hysterical how I spend time out of my day writing a nice review for the Lenovo Yoga 900s only to have it rejected from the moderator, the specific reason why they rejected it is because I mentioned a competitor in my 500 word review. Not only did I mention a competitor but I mentioned a competitor that Lenovo uses in their product yet they still rejected the review I find this preposterous and ridiculous just add that on the ever-growing laundry list of issues I have with Lenovo customer support. If you want to hear my review or watch my videos head over to YouTube and search for Lenovo Yoga 900s I'm one of the only reviewers thus far post CES. Hello. I recently purchase the Yoga 900s with 256GB PCIe SSD. This is my first experience with an SSD. I had to send the pc for warranty repair due to a faulty speaker and "r" key. Lenovo did not have parts available so offered to replace the unit and return my hard drive. I need to get my data off the original and believe I need to purchase an enclosure but after hours of research, am still not sure which type of enclosure I need to get (or if there is an alternative solution). I greatly appreciate any assistance that can be provided.

First, let me say I have not used this product, but I have used a very similar one to work with SATA format M.2 cards.  I have one of these on order, but it hasn't come yet. I use them to test drives without mounting them in a machine.  I am not recommending a particular seller.

Hello I recently bought a Yoga 900S and it was working fine for a day or two, but suddenly the battery symbol had an 'x' and it kept saying BATTERY NOT DETECTED. When that happened, my laptop would only stay awake for a few minutes or seconds then shut down. When I put it on charge, the 'x' was still displayed over the battery symbol but it wouldn't shut down, until a few days later when it would shut down even if it was on charge. So I didn't use my laptop for a day or two and then started using it again. I did recently update to Windows 10, but I don't know if that's what's causing the problem. Can someone please tell me what's wrong with my laptop? The problem is really annoying. Thanks

Hi I bought a Yoga 900s yesterday and so far I like it. I bought the active pen and it arrived today. However there is no documentation on how to connect it. I've tried with Bluetooth, I clicked and held both buttons on the pen, and nothing works. I read on a different model that if the laptop says it has 10 point pen and touch that it would not support a pen. I can't belive that to be accurate. This is a $1300 device and the pen says it is compatible with this model. Anyone out there that can shed light on this for me?

A:Cannot connect active pen to Yoga 900s

I just discovered I was sold a 900 and was told and it was labeled as a 900s. Now I know why I can't connect this pen, it doesn't work with the 900. But I'm trying to decide if the i7 and 16GB of RAM is worth the lack of using a pen. I've tried a plan stylus with it and cannot use it either. I need something to use as a pen though. Very frustrating that Best Buy did this.

Hi,    Yesterday I tested my Yoga 900S with the Intel detection tool and it's come up as being affected by the Intel SA-00086 vulnerability.  I found this document which lists the status of Lenovo products with regard to the vunerability and there is no mention of my model so I contacted the support team and they were unable to provide any further information.  I then requested that they formally open a ticket, which they did.  Today, less than 12 hours after opening the ticket, it was closed with the following response "after your escalation was received and the case was thoroughly investigated, your request cannot be fulfilled".  No further information other than making sure to tell me that any response will be ignored.     Is this the best that Lenovo can do?  It's not like I was expecting an immediate fix but at least some formal recognition that they knew there was a problem and were working on it.  I could understand if this was a cheap laptop a few years old but this is a laptop that was quite expensive and is around 3 months out of warranty, I'm sure some are still in their warranty.   Rob

For a few days, the problem was gone, but now it's back. I did recently update to Windows 10, but I don't know if that's what's causing the problem. Can someone please tell me what's wrong with my laptop? The problem is really annoying. Thanks

Hi.. Out of the blue my Y900s no longer boots normally. Both power lights on the side are on, I can regulate keyboard backlight but whatever key I press nothing appears on screen. Pressing the reset button on the left side results in the same. I had problems with Bluetooth lately , causing me to reinstall the Lenovo driver frequently Is there some other way to revive the Yoga?

Hi, I have a new Lenovo Yoga 900S. Everything was working great until Windows automatically installed the anniversary update last night. Now, the battery won't charge. Thankfully, the laptop seems to be running on A/C, since the battery is not draining. But it won't charge. I've checked the energy management settings, and I've tried uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery driver. But nothing has fixed the issue. Please let me know if you've encountered this problem. Thanks.

Hi,I have bought a lenovo yoga 900s about 6 months ago. I have two issues with the computer that I am looking for an anwser for. 1, The computer makes noise similar to mechanical drive, this occurs when the browser loads a page or when a youtube video is loading. 2, The other day the computer would not start at all, I had to wait for it to drain it of all power before I could start it plugged in to the wallcharger. I hope that this will not happen again considering the fact that I am using the computer for work.  Why do I have theese issues?Any solutions to the Issues described? I hope that the lenovo support team will enlight me here and bring a swift end to my issues with some professional help. Thank you.

Hi, Just bought a yoga 900s in the UK and I am trying to buy a compatible pen. The official Lenovo pen isn't availble on the UK website or any of the usual places like Amazon.co.uk I could order from the US but it will take weeks to arrive. Can anyone recommend another pen that works for the 900s ? Many thanks

Closing the lid should cause the Yoga 900s to sleep, but that doesn't work. The ligth stays on when opening the screen does not come on. The only why to revive the Y900s it long press the power button to force a restart.

How is the sleep mode suppose to work on the Yoga 900s?

Good day.

My Yoga 900S sleeps correctly when I close the lid, as expected. Can you provide more info about the driver/OS update/UEFI-BIOS state of your machine? Maybe that would help to narrow down the troubleshooting focus a bit.

Regards.
