Advice on laptops, Refurbished generally okay?

Q: Advice on laptops, Refurbished generally okay?

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for the purposes of hires graphics production (PS, Illustrator, Painter etc.) and school. I'm looking at a few and I was hoping for feedback on the system specs for each. Some are refurbished and I'd like to know what experience, if any, anyone here has with Tiger Direct's refurbished laptops.

Here are the ones I'm looking at:
Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 and Dell Studio 17
My questions about these:

Is the Intel Core i7 really worth the extra money, or would a much cheaper Core 2 Duo serve my purposes just fine? I'm not really going to be playing games on this thing.
I've never heard of Lenovo, should I be wary of them?

MSI A6005 and Acer Aspire AS5732Z
The main difference is that the first has dedicated graphics and the second doesn't.

Any advice?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Lenovo bought out the IBM line of PC's, they are pretty good.

No you don't need the i7, core 2 duo is plenty of processor.

Dell offers 3 kinds of refurbished, so be carefull what you choose

Lenovo says this about its refurbished line

Product was returned with the factory seal broken.
Product may or may not have been turned on.
Product may or may not have been used. Click to expand...
I am not paticularly fond of Acer or MSI, stick will Dell, Lenovo, Asus

Are they okay to buy or is it a hit-and-miss? Or is it just a 'No'?
Also, sites don't say what has been damaged and repaired in them.
And if it's refurbshed, does that mean it could have been used for a few years, sent back and repaired? Or does refurbished mean reasonably new?

Looking for the cheapest, refurbished laptop that works best with free wifi.

I'd prefer HP laptop suggestions, but anything other than Dell will do. Never had any good experiences with Dell.

I just need a good refurbished laptop for getting on public wifi once in a while. Otherwise I really don't need a laptop. So, the cheaper the better.

I'm not really versed on electronics, especially since they change so often. So, looking for some suggestions on refurb laptops that will work for my needs.

I've never purchased used or refurbished computer gear.

The last couple of days I was looking at some refurbed laptops for
a friend. He wants to install 98SE. 512 MB of memory is about the
limit for 98, so an older model laptop is probably a good idea.

I asked someone who has purchased several dozen refurbed (not used)
laptops for his business. I believe what he told me told me, but it doesn't
make a whole lot of sense!

All these so called "refurbished" laptops still needed new hard drives
and battery packs. Even the CMOS battery, which only costs three
or four bucks had to be replaced.

There is a popular Dell refurb that I've seen listed for $239.00. The specs
would be perfect for running 98SE. If a service contractor found a defective
hard drive or battery pack and replaced it, the retailer could never sell this
laptop for such a low price.

So, what's the final verdict on these laptops. If my friend buys one should
he expect to spend more money replacing some of the major components,
or are there online retailers selling refurbed laptops that have been completely
tested and repaired?

Anyone have experience with "refurbished" products from Dell? Particularly laptops? I have a friend that would like to get a laptop but has a pretty limited budget.

It seems like they have some good deals but I wonder about reliability.

A:Dell Refurbished Laptops

I find the refurb Dell to be a far superior buy than new. When you buy new you are often the first person to ever turn on the system, a refurb has been turned on and failed so it is sent back for extensive testing not done to a new system, after testing to make sure it works properly it is now sold at a good discount.

The refurb looks like new and has exactly the same warranty it just cost less. The only area where it is not a better deal is if you need some specific feature, you cannot order them built with extra parts beyond a few.

Dell gets so many refurbs that the best method for buying one is to know what you want ahead of time and what you are willing to pay for it, they have new systems come up for sale several times a day so if you have the time and know what you need it can be a very satisfactory system purchase.

Hey guys, I have some questions for you. My current laptop is falling apart, so I'm looking at getting a new one, and since I don't want to spend over $500 on it and I don't need real high performance, I was wondering how good refurbished laptops are.
My brother has a six year old Dell Inspiron 1520 which is still in great condition for it's age, so I was really looking at one of those. I don't need real high graphics capabilities, but I would like to be able to run Crysis, Crysis Warhead, BM:AA, AC, FSX, NFS:HP2, etc. on it on low to medium settings, all of which we've done on the Inspiron. Any advice/opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks, FSG

First poster, in search of good advice.

I'm currently playing World of Warcraft on a P4 2.5Ghz, 1GB RAM, GeForce 4200Ti 64MB, dying PC. Granted, the performance for that game isn't really bad at all, I get a constant 30 FPS and can't complain. I'm not a huge gamer and am not looking to trick out anything related to my PC in the near future.

Yet, I have been looking at some cheap Radeon 9600's for the hell of it, because they are under 100$ and I can give my old card to a family member. Now I am sure of compatibility and all that, just wondering if this deal on newegg is worth it, in terms of money spent and slight increase in performance. Again, I only really play World of Warcraft, and at times Sims 2, and some other shooters, Battlefield, Call of Duty.

Here's the card in question:
Saphire ULTIMATE RADEON 9600XT 128MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - OEM

Chipset Radeon 9600XT
Core clock 500MHz

Memory Clock 600MHz
Memory Size 128MB
Memory Int 128-bit
Memory Type DDR

Any help is appreciated - if 70$ or ten bucks more can get me something a little better, please let me know, otherwise, I'm all about this deal. They are offering 1$ three day shipping as well! Thanks.

A:ADVICE: Is a refurbished Saphire Ultimate Radeon 9600XT worth 70$?

the 9600's will outperform the Ti4200 AND they are DX9 compaitable while the Ti4200 is only DX8. personally I would look at spending another 50 or so bucks and get a 9800 or 9800 pro.

I am maybe going to get a laptop but was wondering which is better. My price range is pretty low so I have found 3 possibilities.
1. Lenovo N500
- 15.4" WXGA LCD
- Intel celeron 2.0Ghz
- 1GB DDR Ram
- 160 GB HDD
- Intel GMA 4500M
- Bluetooth, lan, Wi-fi, webcam

2. HP Compaq NX558
- 15.6" HD Bright LCD
- AMD Athlon x2 Dual core 2.1GHZ
- 1GB DDR Ram
- 160GB HDD
- ATI Radeon HD 3250 Graphics
- bluetooth, lan, wi-fi, webcam

3. Gigabyte Q1580L-A71DZA
- 15.4" WXGA Glare type LCD
- Intel Celeron M585 2.16GHZ
- 1GB DDR2 800 Ram
- 160GB HDD
- Intel GMA 4500M
- Lan, Wi-Fi, webcam

Which of these is better for light gaming? Also what pixel shader and memory does the Intel GMA 4500M and the ATI Radeon HD 3250 have?

They're none of them going to be anything worth benchmarking in the games arena, but based on CPU stat's I'd stay clear of the Celerons, although all three machines are much the same in essence.

I'm new at networking. I would like to network 2 laptops and 1 desktop.

1) What equipment do I need?

2) And if I'm running Win98, do I need any other software?

3) What kind of transfer rate can I expect out of this simple network?

A:{Advice Given} - Networking two laptops and desktop PC

1) A network card for each computer. PC Card NICs for the laptops, and a PCI one for the desktop. A hub to plug all the wires into.

2) Nope - 98 has all you need for standard networking.

3) That depends on the hub and NICs you buy. If you get 100BaseT (which I recommend) you will get a very fast transfer rate.

Note - this will NOT share the Internet over your network. For that you will need a proxy server. Windows 98SE has a simple one built in though.

Sorry if this has been posted in the wrong place.

I need a laptop that will allow me to work outside even in bright sunshine. I don't want to have to improvise I am hoping to buy a laptop that has screen technology designed for this reason. I have seen that there is a technology called transflective technology but I am unsure if this is the only option.

I really need the laptop to be no more than 12" but 11" or 10" is preferred. What should I be looking for in terms of screen specs?

In June 2016 our company bought Inspiron 5759. I used it at office, we have air conditioning, nothing that could cause overheating or other problems. In the end of July 17 laptop just turned off and didnt react on any actions. I brought to service center and they told it's the hub located on the same board with CPU. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole board which costs around 600 USD because there's CPU Core i7 in it. I was given another laptop Inspiron 5558 which was not used since winter of 2017 because it had problems with WiFi. I tried to connect it with LAN cable and discovered that LAN is not working, in fact there's no LAN adapter in device manager. Service center said today that's the same problem - but this time hub is not completely broken, it's just doesnt see LAN adapter and periodically shuts down WiFi. The technician told that this is a frequent problem with Inspirons and Dell knows about it but doesnt recall laptops or extend warranty on this spare part. I asked when second laptop got the wifi issues - it started at the beginning of 2017 and warranty ended in December 2016. Again just 1-2 months.

So, it looks very strange that Dell laptops break right after ending of warranty with same problem, and we can't just change the hub, we need to buy a new board which includes CPU for 600 USD.

I don't know if its the laptop or if it has to do with the router but it seems that Apple laptops always interfere with my wifi connection.

My brothers Mac does it when we both visit home and my girlfriends roommates mac always kicks both of our laptops off the wifi. After a few minutes it will let us connect back up but then dies out again after a few minutes.

I assume it has to do with the laptops because neither my brother or the roommate seem to have the problem and it only happens when they are online.

Here's a thought. I've been searching high and low for an affordable laptop which has

Awesome Graphics card (not sure what - but something that could handle Crysis at high)
15-16" screen with 1920 x 1080 res
4gb or more ddr3 1333mhz ram
core i7-720qm or higher processor
backlit keyboard
HDMI, long battery life, etc etc

So basically everything but at under $2500. I even bought a dell studio xps 1645 with the above specs and the price was real good ($1730 with student discount) but it had lots of problems so i had to return it.

Now that the problem is solved (? maybe?).. dell dont offer that laptop in that configuration, making the laptop around $2400 just due to an increase in RAM (6gb instead of 4gb).

And since I am unsure of the quality with dell or any other brand for that matter, I was wondering if there is any laptop out there that gives alienware m15x performance for a smaller pricetag? (a discount coupon for the above would do! hehe)

If not, what about "overhauling" or "Pimp My Laptop" sorta stuff if you catch my drift... You know customizing the laptop or even building it up from scratch.

I've done some basic upgrades in the past (RAM HDD, bluetooth card etc.) but does anyone have any experience in upgrading graphics cards, screens and CPU's?

Any experience or information about this is very welcome, as finding the right laptop in the right price is sorta like the Holy Grail of laptops, especially in NZ s... Read more

I'm new to this forum but I heard you guyz are some kinda pc gurus and all-around specialists in everything software so I thought you might be able to help me sort out a problem I've been having.

A year ago, I got myself a new pc and passed my old system (athon xp 2400+, 2gb RAM, gforceFX 5200 256 mb, windows XP-back then it run perfectly well-) to my sister. A couple of dayz ago she called me in panic saying she couldn't get her internet explorer to launch.
Since firefox and google chrome run normally I wouldn't really care much but from what I can tell, IE not launching is the least of her problems. The pc is generally a lot sluggier than I remember. Actually, every 10 minutes or so it appears to "lag" for 3-4 seconds (the mouse cursor is still moving around but all running aplications freeze for a bit) making runing even the simplest application a rather annoying experience. I don't remember having that kind of issues on this system a year ago and I don't think it's a hardware issue (or some kind of overheating issue since I had the cooling fan replaced a while ago).

Although Nod32 she has currently installed doesn't seem to detect any threats (and appears to be up to date) I'm pretty concerned about cpu usage frequently spiking even though hardly anything appears to be running.

There's plenty of expensive software related to her line of work installed on the system that I hardly know anything about... Read more

Hi all

I'm a newbie to the site and not really sure which forum to post this in, but this seems as good as any.

I have a problem with my PC and I don't even know if its software or hardware related.

The best thing that I can do is list my symptoms and hope that someone can point me in the right direction so here goes:

All of the following symptoms are intermittent. When they happen, several of the symptoms occur at the same time. They always occur when the pc is in standby.

- Desktop icons have been moved
- System clock has lost several hours or clock has got stuck when the pc last went into standby
- mouse and keyboard are unresponsive - usually free up after a few minutes
- sometimes mouse is fine but keyboard completely stops responding

When I check taskmanager there is nothing running that is taking up system resource.

I am running WinXP media centre Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600

Any guidance gratefully accepted

Thanks in advance,

PC is generally slow and sluggish overall. It's a Lenovo ThinkPad T510 running Win 7 Pro 64-bit w/ SP1. 4GB RAM. Hi everyone

I've never really needed to go through any steps to "fix" my computer before. Usually the problems were so swift and severe I had to replace the computer entirely....heh.

I bought my Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop, windows 7, intel i3 core processor about 3 weeks ago, and it ran perfectly, handled all my ridiculous multitasking well, and was really light compared to others I've had. This morning my nephew was using it to play Skyrim (I digress, sometimes I sneak onto his game files for a little fun) and....well he has some anger issues, but that's not what this is about. Something upset him and he slammed the lower left side of the laptop pretty dern hard. Nothing broke on the outside, but suddenly the computer became unresponsive, and I had to force shut down the whole thing. When it started back up it wouldn't....start back up. I got an error message saying "Windows could not start successfully, we recommend you launch startup repair to try and fix the problem. Well I did that about 2 dozen times in a row with failures each time, till finally, much to my joy, it successfully started back up. Except now whenever I try to open a new program, it sometimes has periods of unresponsiveness, and some things like Skyrim can't be opened at all.

I really hope this isn't an internal problem to be fixed, and I'm terrified to restart the computer only to have it give me the startup issues again. So does anyone have any advice ... Read more

A:Generally unresponsive computer

Maybe the RAM or something else was knocked loose. Or he could have easily damaged the hard drive by slamming it while it was running. Then you'd have to replace it and reinstall Windows and your programs. I suggest you back up any data you want to keep as soon as possible.

Hello Everybody,

I have been pointed in the direction of your forum by the Hijack this application as I am a little puzzled by the behaviour of my computer lately. There is nothing consistent with its behaviour - occasionally the mouse pointer is unresponsive, the computer will freeze, services (sound, networking) will appear and disappear and applications will not load properly. to boot, my normally fast internet service occasionally freezes and shows a number of outgoing connections in comodo when only google is loaded in the browser... i smell a fox in my henhouse!

I have run Spybot S&D and use comodo internet security, but both have come up as detecting no problems so I will give this a shot.

Attached are the DDS files, and the Hijack This log.

Hopefully you will be able to help and it is appreciated.

So ever since i have built the pc ive been having constant BSOD. At first it used to be when gaming, and playing graphic intensive games but not its BSOD when I watch youtube and generally just using the PC. Also I had this really weird patch of time where I could not shut the PC down. If I shut the PC down and then started it up 100% of the time right after starting it up after about 1 minute of usuage it would BSOD. The second forced shutdown didnt yield an instant BSOD. I've changed the slots of the RAM and added new ram, new PSU and a new GFX card which "seemed" to have stopped the BSOD... but now theyre back again and this time I had like 5 BSOD in a row within 5 minutes.... Anyways heres all the stuff:

please suggest me some ways i can get through this problem.

A:laptop generally hangs

Welcome ankurkhunger14

Firstly, some general maintenance. Update your graphics/sound drivers, and perhaps anything else that needs updating, including downloading latest versions of flash/your browser, etc. Then run some cleanup programs, such as the Windows built in Disk Cleanup and/or a third party tool, such as CCleaner (do not use the registry cleaning component). Running a disk defrag wouldn't hurt either (best to download a third party one for this, such as Defraggler).

Secondly, if your machine still runs slowly, could you please say the make/model of your laptop and what video/song/etc. you are trying to play, or anything else you do that is running slow.

First, let me thank you guys in advance for your time and energy regarding my issues.

Second, this PC is used by 3 people. I used to have it set up with separate logins but keeping everyone's account up to date was a hassle so I trimmed it back to one.

Third, as far as my experience level goes, I consider myself Intermediate but still learning and sometimes need a little handholding. I'm comfortable editing the registry and have used ResHacker a few times.

Also, even though I have read the Rules, FAQ and went through the Hijackthis 5-Step process: Like running naked through a gauntlet of Hot Coals, Birch Twigs and Klingon Pain Sticks, I did learn some new things. However, alot of it seemed to pertain to MS IE. We use Firefox exclusively.

In addition, there is also some tweaks that I've applied to the start-up process and the system. One of them shows up as 'menuexplorer3.exe'. These are for accessibility and need to be kept in place if possible.

hey all

I recently installed vista (x64) on my 4600+ dualcore with 2 gigs of ram and a geforce 6800GT gfxcard

now I installed the latest drivers for my graphicscard but I still find some things very slow.
For example when scrolling a webpage in firefox it really lags behind a lot, same when trying to resize a window. I tried disabling aero and just running the classic windows theme and that made the scolling in the browser much faster but resizing windows was still slow, even slower than before infact.

Could it be some sort of setting in the nvidia controlpanel or is it simply a matter of bad openGL drivers from nvidia?

A:generally sluggish desktop

Chipset drivers (and the drivers for any integrated devices) should have come from the PC manufacturer's (or motherboard manufacturer's) web site. Sometimes the driver for an integrated device has to be modified to work in the particular system so if you (or Windows) gets it from elsewhere it may give unpredictable problems. If you haven't already, download the latest chipset drivers and other drivers that the PC (or motherboard) manufacturer has and install them; chipset drivers first.

Sorry if this is long, but I want to be as detailed as I can in hopes of getting good suggestions.

What I have open on my computer:
Generally I have a bunch of browser windows open.  One which is Google Chrome with 10-15 tabs open with things like gMail, eLance, some forums, a google docs spreadsheet, facebook and some random sites I'm using for research.
I then also have Firefox open with Pandora on and another gmail account.
In addition I have AIM, Skype, TeamViewer, iTunes and several open office writer documents open (open office is a free, open source version of Microsoft office if you didn't know).
I also have the free version of Maleware Anti-Malware.  I've run scans and everything seems clean.

A:Computer Generally Slow

Does the computer run fine after you shut it down and restart it, then become slower as the day goes on?
Based on just the number of windows, documents and programs you generally have open, it's only natural for your computer to begin running slow after a while, even with the 12GB of system memory installed. When you've got that many applications and services running on a computer all day, eventually your virtual memory and your system memory are going to become full, and this will cause the problems you are experiencing. Rebooting will clear the memory, but once the PC runs again for a while with all those programs open and running, the problem will return.
My advice is to close out programs, tabs and documents you aren't using, and be sure to shut down the PC from time to time. If the problem persists when you have a minimal number of instances open and running, then I would suggest running some diagnostics. But for now, I'd say there's probably nothing really wrong with the machine, you're just working the system and virtual memory too hard.

I've read through various points on the sight for running slow.

I have an Acer 5000 laptop, running windows XP, SP2.

I mentioned on another thread that after installing Norton anti-virus it's been running slow and i was getting an error message. I can't connect my personal laptop at work so this is from a work machine, but I have access to my laptop. (Here with me)

I've defragged the machine, cleaned up the disc and deleted any old programs. The laptop runs fine when started, so I ran a anti virus scan and Lavasoft Ad-were in safe mode and it picked up on various pieces. My friend at work is now as we speak running another spy ware/ad-ware program taht has picked up on various pits, but I have various processes in the task manager running under my username that i haven't started and Norton anti virus is not running at all.

Another small thing is I keep losing the battery icon from my taskbar and also a server busy/switch to error, but I can't find out what program this relates to, is this an indication of something else?

I think I've seen posts on here where people can upload a 'log' of what's going on etc.

What should I look at next? Should I completely uninstall norton even though it's cost me like ?40.

I just need pointing in the right direction.

Firefox freezes/hangs up(specially when finishing downloading files), file explorer takes up to a min sometimes to open a folder, right click menu takes time to popup, start menu takes several seconds to come up, it takes several minutes to shutdown PC, ect..

Programs I run, such as audio editing, games, ect often hangs up aswell. I run microsoft antivrius, which is far from best, yet it showed PC as clean.. What may cause this issue?

I am using Windows7 64bit, Nvidia gtx260 card, 4gb ram, and i5. The hdd the system is on is several years old, about 3-4. Im using Microsoft security essential as antivirus, together with ad-aware.

Hi Krawlspace. If you post a HijackThis log in any other forum it will be moved to this forum. This is the only forum where HijackThis logs can be anaylzed.

Since the log shows no signs of viruses or malware HijackThis will not be of much help in resolving any issues. It is only used for malware analysis and removal. Performance issues are handled by the techs in the XP forum. When posting there, give a detailed description of the issue, what (if anything) has been done to check/verify/resolve it and any other information that would be helpful to the techs. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found, but do not post a HijackThis log in that forum. If you do, it will simply be moved back over to this forum.

Hi All,

I used be pretty good with computers, but it's been a while! I have an ASUS laptop running Windows 7. It's worked great for the last year or so, but the last 6 months it's painfully slow doing anything on the laptop. I've checked a few things listed below, but the computer is still very slow.

Ran Malwarebytes / CC Cleaner - found no major issues
Internet is slow, but network utilization is < 5% and other machines on the same network are running fine
Only two programs installed on the laptop post purchase - AVG, Picasa, and Carbonite (only back-ups at night)
Running internet programs (e.g., IE, FF, Chrome) takes up ~35% of the CPU, even when idle
Ran msconfig and didn't see any odd or irregular programs running at startup.
Plenty of space available on the harddisk

Before I reformat the laptop, wanted to see if there's something else I should check/do? Thanks in advance for any help!
