Windows Media Player wont stay remain as the default media player?!?!

Q: Windows Media Player wont stay remain as the default media player?!?!

I have Windows Media Player 10 and Total Video Player. I use Total Video layer to watch some movies. Anyway the default program to open audio/video files with keeps switching to Total Video Player. I want the default player for all media types to be WMP. I went into the options menu in WMP and checked all the boxes on all formats for WMP to be the default player, but every time I restart the computer the default player to open half of the media files reverts back to Total Video Player.

How do I fix this.

Preferred Solution: Windows Media Player wont stay remain as the default media player?!?!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone, I have a problem with Quicktime right now. I really would like Media Player to be the default player for .mpg and .wmv, but even though I have Mozilla set in the options screen to open those programs with Media Player, they are still opening in Quicktime! I also went to the plugin settings screen in QT and set it to NOT be the default player for video files (unless they're .mov). After I did this, those video files i told mozilla to open in MP are still being opened in QT! Am I doing something wrong? Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

Hello;

Purchased a new pc (running W2K Pro OS) that came with nero software for an installed burner. Regardless of the file type I want to access, for instance, play an online audio clip (cheap-cds.com) where windows media player would ordinarily handle, "nero media player/media file" default appears insteads and wants to either download it and save in order to play the clip or open a file instead of just playing the clip on the WMP. I was going to upgrade the nero software anyway, so even after uninstalling nero, Nero media player/files continue to function as default instead of WMA. How do I stop Nero from being the default player or use of its file extensions and allow WMP to serve as default player. I've looked for an option on the WMP itself to set the player as default and or its related media files and wan't able to come-up with anything. Looked into folder/file options as well, and while I found a ton of Nero extensions still present, found nothing in the way of a default setting- Hope this makes sense. Any assist would be appreciated- thanks

In Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs Tab > Internet Programs section and click on the Set Programs button. The Default Programs window will open. Then, click Set Program Access and Computer Defaults. Choose Microsoft, or go to Custom and check Windows Media Player as the default player. Hello all, I tried to reply to the thread with a similar title to provide a correct answer. So I am reintroducing the topic and providing an answer that seems to work.

Problem: I want to use media player with very minimal frame. Many answers are "play full screen". But I know that media can be played in windows media without any skin, very minimal framing and floating media controls over the video that auto hide when you move away.

Answer:

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

Hi,
Its been a long time that my default album art picture logo of media player is stucked on a very annoying picture.
It only shows it if the music file that I open (a song for exam: Linkin park - Numb), doesn't have any specific logo of its own.
If it does, it shows his (the Linkin Park's logo).
But on most cases my music files don't have a logo of their own (it doesn't must be a real song, as long as its mp3 its opened by media player), so I see this annoying picture alot.
I've tried to mess with all the configurations available and got no solution.
I also tried to contact the Microsoft's Media Player's community support system, but they blocking any kind of contact with "writing words", so using the begginer F.A.Q isn't really helping.
I also tried the manually work, as searching every kind of picture with that logo and delete it.
I downloaded a Hidden File Tool, that lets me search every kind of hidden system picture, and I actually found some of these pictures stucked any where (as on my Desktop, on few song's folders, but none in C:Windows or something like that).
I'm not sure about it but I think it solved just a lil bit.. It fix'ed the not-a-song-mp3-file that was on my desktop and had that logo but now it shows a lovely blank instead.
But the rests are still with it.

So please if you can help me, I'm dying to solve this for real already,

Hello,

I use Windows Media Player 12 as my default player under Windows 7.

However, whilst cleaning up my audio library I have found an awful lot of MP3 files that stutter and crackle/pop whilst being played, almost like they're skipping.

If I open the folder location for these files and choose to play them with VLC, they play perfectly.

I am using the latest audio drivers (R2.40) for my onboard Realtek soundcard.
As well as the near-latest version of the Shark007 codec pack.

I have tried changing the default codec for MP3 under the Settings Application, both x86 and x64 versions, and using Run as administrator, to no avail.

So, how do I get Windows Media Player to use a different codec for MP3 playback, ideally the one that VLC uses as default, which is 'libavcodec' I think?

All other audio playback is perfectly fine, i.e. the internet, DVD, WMC, Windows etc.
It is JUST certain MP3 files.

Hi I noticed there was a tread about this already but it was closed and the problem was not solved for me. When I got my computer new, the Media Player choose the first image I had on my desktop as the default image for all songs that do not have artwork. I cannot seem to fix this, I use Itunes to assign artwork to songs and that works, but the default image assigned to songs without artwork still remains. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: I found a song that has the proper album art in the preview image, but when I open it the old default picture I had on my desktop in the first place shows up. The only way for me to fix this was to drop the song into Acid Pro and render it at the same kbps, then give this duplicate the proper artwork through Itunes.

A preview of the skin appears.

You can change skins as often as you like, but you must be in full mode to do so. To return to full mode, press CTRL+1."

I took the following steps by:
Using the "open with" method and browsing and selecting vlc on the browse section but it still wont show up on the interface menu or be selected as my default player
I also tryed selecting it from "default program" but VLC is still not showing up
finally I tryed to do it manually by going to VLC and selecting preferences and clicking all the media extentions for it to be a default player on VLC and still no success

So how do I exactly make VLC my Default player? I'm assuming the problem that my computer can not recognize VLC at all?

A:How to set up VLC media player as your default player.

On the default program part, down the bottom did you also click "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" then click ok.
