PC buzzing & freezing while playing Audio/video

Q: PC buzzing & freezing while playing Audio/video

Hello. I just registered. My PC keeps freezing while I watch a movie or listen to music.

It acts like in this video:
You Tube

I even plugged it into a new wall socket, and cleaned it from dust, updated Windows 10 to version 1511, and I even moved the ram memory in different slots, but the buzz still happens for a millisecond. I haven't experienced this in games afaik though.

Can anyone please help me? It is getting annoying. Before Windows 10, I had Windows 8.1, but I upgraded. This happened with Windows 8.1 as well.

My specs: Intel Core i7-4790K, 4200 MHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4 GB) 8 GB RAM

Please someone help me. Many thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The problem still exists even after Dell repaired the laptop. It took two weeks to get the repaired laptop back from Dell.

The problem is:
When I plug or unplug the charger while playing music/video on laptop, the laptop is freezing with buzzing sound for 1-2 seconds when the laptop begins charging. Even after Dell repaired the laptop, the problem still exists.
Tried installing the updated drivers, the laptop works fine only for a short period and then after some time the same freezing with buzzing sound problem comes back.
Also, if the laptop is restarted it works fine for a while and then the same freezing with buzzing sound problem comes back.

Not satisfied with the Dell and Dell repair services.
Need help with this problem.

Hello,

Starting about a week ago whenever any audio is being played through my computer (speaker or headphone) I will hear a buzzing sound and occasionally the audio with skip. This happens weather I am playing audio that is being streamed from the internet or that is on my computer directly.

I have tried several things to fix this problem including installing all windows updates that are available as well as updating my audio drivers.

I am running windows 7 home premium 64 bit. My computer model is hp pavilion dv7t quad 6100 and I have IDT high definition audio codec driver version 6.10.6381.0 which my computer says is the latest driver version. Updating to this version has not solved the problem, however.

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. If there is additional info that is neccesary, please let me know and I will post it.

A:IDT High Def Audio, buzzing sound when playing any sort of audio.

Unplug the speakers from the PC and see if you still get the buzz with headphones. Some "buzz" problems can be related to "AC power ground loop" problems if some separately powered devices are connected.

Noise and skipping are problems that have been posted here before. There is no "one fix" for that. There are possible hardware problems, drivers (including video drivers), Interrupt issues, Wi Fi caused, etc.

Skipping can be because the other device that is on the shared Interrupt that the sound is on is interrupting the sound. Sound is always on a shared interrupt (IRQ) with a higher priority device. You can try this: go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the IDT and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect the sound and reinstall it and some times put it on a different shared IRQ.

Hello! As the title says whenever I'm playing a game it'll randomly freeze for a couple seconds and buzz/loop the current sound through my speakers. Sometimes it won't recover and I'll have to shut off my computer manually. Sometimes after a long freeze it will say Display driver crashed but recovered, I've tried updating my drivers multiple times but nothing. I'm honestly not that computer savy, I've cleaned my computer multiple times and clean started it. Works for a bit but then right back at it. It could be that my graphics card isn't strong enough for the games I play? Doubtful but I'm not sure, especially since I turn down all the graphics. It usually only occurs if I'm playing a game and have a tab open or something. Also did a computer info scan that I'll attach. Thank you for your time! Truly do appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Hello All,

I have built my own PC and I've been facing random freezing with buzzing sound issue while playing almost all games (Battlefield 3, Assassins Creed II and Revelation, CoD - MW 3, and Black Ops, Batman Arkham City and recently Saints Row 3) this freezing issue is really random and can happen anytime during gameplay.
I've updated all drivers (graphics, sound, BIOS etc). One thing to note is some of these games work without freezing for hours when I set Affinity to two CPUs but when I start playing Saints Row 3 with Affinity set to 2 CPUs the games becomes very slow and if I increase CPUs then it freezes after few minutes. I've tried to reseat the heatsink with thermal paste added two cabinate fans one blowing out and one in but this has not solved my problem.
I ran HWiNFO64 tool and saved log file of various readings while playing Saints Row 3 when freezing issue happened and I do not see any heating problem.

I would really appreciate any help to solve this issue.

I apologize in advance if my post is missing any information; I attempted to follow the directions for properly posting but while I'm am computer functional, I'm not overly computer literate.

I'm running:
Windows 7 Professional computer 64 bit
4.0GB of RAM
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor 3.20 GHz

The system constantly crashes when playing video games and games consistently lag. We have completely re-installed the OS and replaced all parts in the PC at least twice. When the system crashes the speakers buzz loudly, although sometimes it sounds like it's coming from the computer itself.

We switched from Nvidia because everything has checked out and it was hoped that the problem was the hardware not playing nice to no avail. I'm still getting the same error/crash.

A:Routine crashing with buzzing sound when playing video games.

All except last one showed up a WHEA error stating that there was a timeout failure of the northbridge bus between CPU and RAM. Commonly this is due to a mobo, RAM or CPU failure. Just to make sure, if you believe your system is stable enough, you can attempt updating your BIOS for your mobo as that can commonly fix things. In most cases however, this is a problem that will only be resolved by swapping hardware.

If you wish, you can run some hardware tests as followed in the order given:

RAM: Memtest86+ - 7+ passes
CPU: Prime95 - Torture Test; Blend; overnight (9+ hours)
GPU: MemtestCL - Run twice (if any of the tests work on your GPU; ATI cards will need to install the ATI APP SDK as it requires OpenCL)

All of these (excluding MemtestCL) are included in the UBCD if you prefer a Live CD environment (which is the best environment to test hardware on). Note that Prime95 currently does not work on the latest version of UBCD. Also, please provide us temps/voltages using HWInfo with Sensors only option checked. Log two 30-minute instances: one for idle, and one for high load. If you can get the system to crash during high load logging, that's even better.

I recently purchased a GTX 580 and after installing it and rebooting my computer, once windows fired up I noticed my speakers were making a high pitched noise, along with fluctuating static. Upon further investigation I realized my audio was also not working. Here are some things I have tried to remedy the situation:

- Checked the speakers: They work perfectly on another computer, likewise I still get the noise when I tried a different set of speakers and a set of earbuds in the problem computer

- Tried changing the video card out with the old GTX 460, didn't work

- I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling both audio and video drivers using these instructions (http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=586183&mpage=1) with drive sweeper, again to no success

- I have swapped out PSU's and still get the problem

- I have tried doing a fresh windows install with a spare HDD and I still get the noise as soon as windows boots

I have figured out that if I go in to Device Manager, under System Devices and disable one of the 'High Definition Audio Controller' (there are two, but the other is associated with my video card) then the noise will stop.

At this point I am pretty perplexed as to what is causing this. Could something on my board have been zapped? I'm out of ideas for a fix, any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I have a brand new Inspiron 7560 and I've been having a lot of issues with the audio and video sort of lagging and making a buzzing noise and stuttering, it happens every 15 minutes when watching something or listening to music.
I had this issue and then got the laptop replaced because I had no idea what the issue was. I don't like returning items but it was brand new and cost a lot so I was worried there was a bigger problem. It happened with the first one from the get go but with the replacement it started happening after a few days of use. It started off with static noises every so often roughly within the first say 30 minutes of turning the laptop on, and then it started doing the buzzing and lagging every 15 minutes like the first one I had. I've also noticed a static noise whenever putting the charger in or out.
I had a look on the internet on how to fix it before I got the first one replaced but none of it worked, I've had another look now and came across a thread but it was from 2011 so thought the fix may be outdated now. I thought my best bet was to just come straight here to see if anyone could help.
I'm really hoping this is a known issue and it's easy to remedy as I really don't want to return this one after already returning one. I'm sorry I haven't got much information about the issue, but I hope someone will be able to help me. If you need anything else I will try my best to answer any questions.
Thanks very much

A:Audio and Video make buzzing noise/stuttering every 15 minutes

Different folks have problems for different reasons.  I would suggest you open at least Task Manager to watch the performance on the system to see if anything pops up every 15 minutes which is using resources.
Keep an eye on Processor speed and utilization.  Also the drive usage.  I can't think of anything which goes on a 15 minute time interval, but possibly some setting you have set up such as checking for mail..
Using Resource Monitor would be even better,  but the software/browser you are using could also be involved.

I have a big problem with Windows XP SP2. My whole computer freezes during playing a video file. Especially when I'm working with some other programs (such as I.E. , mIRC, Opera, Word, eDonkey....). Computer freezes sometimes after few minutes, sometimes after one hour, sometimes after few hours, sometimes immediately.... there's no exact period. All other programs and everything in my computer is working perfectly (I've installed new system few weeks ago).
Any suggestion? - I don't want to reinstall everything only for one thing, especially because I think that it won't resolve my problems, because I have this problem right from the start.

OK people I found the problem

"The big ?"

"Why does my computer freeze and makes a ugly sound how can I fix it"

This is how------- use a program to update your video driver (driver genie) windows update gives you a bad update that makes your video card error out and freezes your pc.

or you can roll back your driver to the last known working driver

do this and your problem is well lets say R.I.P.---lol

this will work for Windows 7 and vista NOT sure about XP

So the backstory:

I played 7 Days to Die last weekend and had an odd freeze where everything locked up and the monitor suddenly looked like this:

http://i.imgur.com/C9c5BGS.jpg

I figured maybe it was an issue of graphics card drivers needing to be updated so the next day I went ahead and updated my drivers. Later that day 7 Days to Die crashed again, the same way. Then later World of Warcraft did. At that point I figured something must be pretty wrong, as I'd been playing WoW on and off for weeks and never had any problems.

I tried dusting out the case, worrying that it was a heat issue. Eventually during one of the restarts/freezes I got to the point where the tower would boot up but the monitor stayed in Power Saver mode. After flashing the BIOS and removing the graphics card, I was able to get back into Windows. I figured maybe my graphics card was on its way out, but it couldn't hurt to format the SSD I keep Windows on and start clean before I put a new card in. So I did that, but held off on putting the card in right away as it took forever to get all the Windows Updates handled, and eventually I ended up installing Windows 10 as there were so many problems with Windows 7.

Fast forward to now where I still haven't installed a new graphics card, as when I tried to test my system out by running some games (Rocket League, which completely freezes up on the title screen; Beseige, which plays fine but within 5-10 minutes causes a BSOD of System_Service_Exception) it did... Hey,

I Recently had a computer made for me and have had it for about 2 weeks now. Everything works great in it and haven't had any problems except for when i play World of Warcraft, my computer decides to freeze up after a random amount of time.. Sometimes it lasts for 2 hours, sometimes only for 5 minutes. And i must manually turn it off by pressing and holding the power button.

My Specs are:

- Intel Celeron D Processer
- Windows Xp Home Service Pack 2
- 250 GB Hard Drive
- 2 GB Ram
- Nvidia Geforce 7300GS Video Card

I Thought it could be overheating of my graphics card (I'm not the best with computer hardware, though i know how to take it out and put it in), so i opened both side panels up and even put a mini fan blowing inside it to see if it would cool it down, but it still froze up.

I felt the inside of my computer and it does get pretty hot without the mini fan i use, but my computer acts the same way if i have the mini fan On or Off. is it possible that i still wasn't able to cool down the video card with the fan i put blowing on the inside?

Or what other possibilities do you think could be causing this problem?

Its very frustrating because i run a program with World of Warcraft that i need to run most of the day awhile im away, and when i come back to it and see it was only active for 30 minutes before freezing sucks because i lose a lot of time.

My computer doesn't freeze unless i am running this game (haven't tested any other games... Read more

I'm at my wits end. A few months ago I started having issues where my computer would freeze hard, mouse frozen, Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing and the sound playing the last second of sound in extreme slow-mo that loops after about 10 seconds. Nothing can be done beside hard power off and restart.

This only happens when I am watching a video or playing a game. I just got a brand new GeForce GT 440 to test if that was the issue, and it still locks up.

Some quirks I've found. YouTube is usually okay. Demo movies in Steam, or on PCGamer.com or often in video ads cause the lock up.

If ITunes is open it locks up almost instantly and basically every single time I try to watch the weather for whotv.com.

In games it can run for a long time or a short time, it can be a graphic intensive game, or not. It can run for 10 hours straight on Skyrim on max settings, then I load Dungeon Keeper from GOG.com and locks up in 60 seconds. And vice versa for that matter.

I am starting to think it has something to do with sound. But I am unsure how to test this without shutting the sound off completely and forever (which is not something I want to do) or shelling out money for a sound card (which is not something I want to do).

I have wiped and reinstalled Windows 7 64 bit twice. Still same issues. I don't think it is a software issue, but possibly a driver issue.

What is your agp Accelerated Graphics Port set to? If it is set higher than the game you are playing it could cause this. Say it is runing at x8 you could try changing the AGP speed in BIOS to x4 (save settings before exiting BIOS)

Hello forum,

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-1FP laptop, about 4 years old.

Running Windows 7 (32 bit version).

An occasional but annoying problem: when playing video, from time to time the whole system freezes. Sound continues to come from the speakers but it's usually either a slowed down & distorted version of what I should be hearing, or a loud, repetitive buzzing/screeching noise.

System never recovers - just freezes totally, unresponsive, display frozen, mouse pointer won't move, etc. Have to reboot each time.

Does anyone know what might be causing this & how I might fix it?

Thanks,
Alan.

A:Satellite Pro P300-1FP - Occasional Freezing When Playing Video

As far as I know SP P300 runs well with Win7 32bit. My brother has the same machine and use it with Win7 too. We have often checked performance with different games or playing different videos, mostly avi or mpeg files. YouTube videos run also very good and smoothly so I really don?t understand why do you have this freezing problem.

Have you installed display driver from Toshiba download page?
Is HDD extremely busy before this happen?

Does the same happen when you play games?

I have tried Windows Media player, Real Player, Winamp, DivX, DivD and they all act the same. I am running Win XP. If anyone has any help it would be appreciated. This laptop was used before I got it. The problem that I am having is that while I play an audio file the mouse will start to lag and the audio will make this weird buzzing sound and sometimes will sound like its in slow motion or speed up. If I try to watch a video it will either never load or lag very badly. If I don't close it out when that happens (Both audio and video) it will blue screen. The mouse also sometimes just lags when I'm doing nothing but moving it across the screen. I've ran a few virus scans that found nothing.

I don't know if this is needed. But this showed up so I copied it.

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 7. I can play videos, cds I have sound for everything except when I try to play a video file (.mov) from an SD card. The video plays perfectly only there's no sound at all. I have tried downloading decoders, but that doesn't help besides I don't know how to use them. I have also downloaded windows 7 codecs but again the configure window looks the same as all the others & doesn"t seem to make a difference, still no sound. Any help?

System: AMD Athlon CPU, Asus A7N266-VM motherboard, 256MB DDR RAM, 4GB HDD.

I'm unable to play any audio file using WMP9, Crystal Player & Ulead video editing software.

When I try to open an mpeg file with Crystal, I get a message 'can't init directsound for playing audio'.

When I use WMP9 or Ulead, the video file plays without any sound. WMP9 does not play any audio file - MP3, Wav either from the HDD or the CDRom player. I'm able to play CDs thru my LG CDRom player.

WMP9 gave me the following report :
0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation.
You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again.

A:No audio when playing video files

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Go into your device manager, and check to see if there are any yellow exclamation or question marks next to your audio devices.

You could also try reinstalling the drivers for your sound device.

If you`ve got onboard sound then you will need to go to your mobo manufacturers website, and download the latest drivers from there.

If on the other hand, you`ve got a seperate soundcard, then go to the soundcard manufacturers website, and download the drivers from there.

I have recently been going to major news sites such as CBS and NBC, but also some other video streaming sites. When I press play, I get a giant 3,2,1.... and then no actual video image plays but only the audio. I'm not sure how or why this started. And so, that is why I am asking for assistance so I can actually go back to watching videos online.

Hello,

I have a windows 7 home premium 64 bit computer. I am trying to play an avi file. It only plays the video and not the audio. Any solutions?

A:AVI file playing video and not audio

You might need to install a codec pack. If you have not installed any others give sharks a try.

Sharks007 Codec Pack.

When installed run the shortcut in admin mode. That will reset the codecs & you should be good to go.

Hello, I've been noticing something since I got my P50 that is very irritiating. I am running Windows 10 on a M.2 SSD and using the stock HDD for storage. I have a couple of games stored on the HDD along with a library of some music. Whenever I play a game, I notice 1 second freezing of both video and audio before the game resumes back. The games I'm playing are very light pre 2011 games that I used to run on my old laptop. To further cement the point, I have a dac/amp connected to the P50 via a USB port. Music will be playing and suddenly things stop for a second or so before it resumes. If I am to guess what is happening, I might say the HDD is trying to go to sleep in those moments I notice the 1 second freezing. If that is the case, what can I do to stop that ?

Is there any way to tell if i have a software conflict?

A:video is playing slower than audio

Try another movie file and see what happens. You can always open it with another player. It can happen when you are running or downloading another program at the same time. Make sure nothing else is running in the background. Try these steps first. Regards Grassy

Hi-
I've noticed that my Realtek audio driver is preventing my computer from playing online video, ie msn, etc. Yet, when I disable the Realtek driver I'm able to play the video. But, then I'm not able to hear any sound. Any suggestions on how to fix this conflict? My audio driver is the most recent driver update from the dell website. So, I know that can't be the problem.

Hi,

I encountered this odd problem. I recently switched to windows 10 from 7. When I play video from the monitor (via dvi cable), it plays fine, but as soon as the big screen TV (connected via hdmi) is turned on, the sound goes off. This happens with potplayer as well as vlc player, so it's probably not application related. However, I go to windows sound setting and I can hear the test sounds (while big screen TV is on) - just not from the video. I never encountered this before in windows 7.

If you need any other information to help diagnose, please advise.

Thank you!

i-tunes/WMP/youtube playing too fast

I have a custom built PC with an external soundcard via USB (Creative Soundblaster 24). A friend installed a new harddrive (Seagate OEM 500GB Barracuda 7200.12 Internal Hard Disk Drive)
(7200RPM, SATA, 16MB Cache) into the PC and copied all my files from an old PC to this PC. All audio/video worked fine on this PC until everything was copied over including version of microsoft xp.

Sometimes the videos/songs play normal and then other times it will go really fast or jump a second at a time.

I have a list of codecs if needed.

I really need someone to help me with this problem. Any extra information needed i will try to get it

Thanks

Hi. Thank you for your time and expertise
For a while now I've had mostly BSOD 0x00000124 appearing on my screen when watching online videos(except YouTube) or whenever I played PC games on maximum video settings.
I decided to re-install Windows, assuming that software is the problem. Though after that not only did the BSOD stay, but also my computer started freezing randomly(on start-up, while installing updates, browsing the internet).
Also I installed Zorin OS 6. After a few minutes of browsing the internet(using Chrome) it also froze.
I tried running MemTest86+(using a CD) but after about 10 min. the computer screen shuts down on its own.
What should I do?

After a while using my laptop (a couple of hours) the audio and video start playing in slow motion. This happened to me while I was watching YouTube videos. Also sometimes some buttons are delayed like the volume and the brightness button. I would like to know if it is something that can be fixed and also if it would be covered by the warranty.

Hi, It is avery nice machine from outside:    http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c05217287.pdf But it is not designed for CPU and GPU intensive works (such as watching videos) therefore after a while, machine will get hot and heat, heat, heat will slow it down.  Note: you won't be able to upgrade both. Please keep it cooler using few suggestions    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/technology-blog/keep-laptop-cool-172740363.html   http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01657439&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en Regards.

Hi,
I am using DivX Plus Player version 8.1.2 to play some mkv files. The audio wasn't playing and I found from the error message that I needed a codec (AC3 and 8192 came up - I'm not technical enough to know what that means).

I found a codec, and now the audio plays but stutters to the point where I can't watch the video.

Please help a numpty in distress!

Thanks,
Meg

A:Audio stuttering on playing Divx video

Well, I'll tell you what I do with the DivxHD MKV files...I convert them to Xvid MP4 with Format Factory.
Why? Because I have nothing but trouble playing back MKV files...the audio is out of sync, the audio stops, the audio this the audio that (can't remember stuttering).
I convert to Xvid MP4 and the picture is still great, it plays in anything and the audio is rock solid.

Other than that I think MKV is great!

Hi all,

since a few days I'm experiencing a crackling sound (glitch) when playing videos (youtube, mp4, ...) and audio (mp3).
I didn't install any new software but I guess it occured after a windows update. Unfortunately i cannot recover my pc to before the update.

I already looked up for solutions, but I'm not finding it.
I tried to find it within thee latency issues, but I was not able to find it as told in following topic:
http://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-7-|-windows-vista-tutorials/5721-how-diagnose-fix-high-dpc-latency-issues-wpa-windows-windows-vista-7-8-a.html

I don't know which graph I need to check because they have other names than the one given in the diagnose topic.
Which one of these do I need?

Ok, I restarted my computer from a fresh boot this morning and when I opened up iTunes to play a song, I clicked the play button. It then proceeds to keep the song on 0:00, no audio no nothing. No attempt to even start the song.

Thinking it was an iTunes error I tried to play something in WMP. It did the same thing....clicked play and the song stays on 0:00. Now I tried to play a video in WMP to see if that worked, and it played extremely slowly and laggy with no audio. VLC media player is doing the same thing.

Some background on my system, it doesn't lag. I have an i7920 and the hard drive the music and audio is stored on is extremely fast. I also tried moving the music to a different HD on my system and it does the same thing. Any help is appreciated. I am going to try a system restore.

A:Music/video not playing (Not an audio problem)

A system restore fixed it. Looks like a windows update was installed. Thats the only thing that could have done it. I haven't installed anything for over a week. If you know what might have done it specifically, let me know.

Hi Everyone,

I used to play any movie type with my VLC media player since it has almost all the Codecs necessary for playing all video and audio files including AC3 audio (code "8192) format. Now, i can only hear the audio while playing a video file. This issue applied to all my media players (VLC, DivX, BS.Player, WMP, Media Player Classic) except Winamp. It doesn't apply to Winamp probably because i've never used it before untill this problem arised. I don't really know why.

Anyway, the problem started after i played an old and cracked DVD movie on my system with VLC. While playing the DVD, it started skipping and later on played smoothly. But after ejecting the DVD, i could no longer see images on any movie i played with any media player except for Winamp. The problem i'm having with Winamp is that it can't play all type of media files especially ones with AC3 audio (code 8192) which means you can only see the video but no audio and also does not re-index while trying to play an incomplete movie copy, unlike VLC.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installin DivX including VLC which i suspects caused the problem, but still, the problem persists.

ANY HELP, PLZ. Sorry for the long note.
Thanks.

Hello, I have run into multiple problems lately that I haven't been able to solve. The first thing that has happened is sometimes my computer will just freeze for half a second. Usually when I am watching/streaming video or playing a game, but sometimes while just browsing as well.

Second, I am now getting audio distortion for half a second. Like the sound is being stretched out and distorted, this has only been happening for a few days.

Any help would be appreciated.

I use a laptop with Windows XP Home Edition, service pack 3. A couple of days ago I started having problems playing video and music files that have worked fine before. Windows Media Player 11 would give the me the error message;

"Your computer is running low on memory. Quit other programs and then try again"

As well as not giving any sound. I wasn't actually running any other programs at the time and the memory wasn't running low, so I tried playing the file in Media Player Classic. No error message, but also no sound. Although sometimes WMP11 doesn't display that message, but still plays the file with no sound.

With music files WMP11 would not give me the error message, but would not play the files either. Having experienced somewhat similar problems before, the first thing I tried was to uninstall and then reinstall the codec pack. However, when trying to reinstall the CCCP, I got the following message;

And a quick search I found out installing to a shorter path name would bypass that, so installed it C:\CCCP and it worked. And it did actually solve the problem, for about a day. But now it's happening again and I have no idea why. I tried the K-lite mega codec pack instead, but it made no difference.

Any ideas? If more information is needed I'll do my best to fill you in.

This article; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/210638

says;

"To disable automatic short file name generation, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and then click OK.
On the Windows menu, click HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE on Local Machine.
Double-click the \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem folder.
Double-click the NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation value, type the number 1 in the Data box, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
NOTE: Existing files using the short name format will still be available to 32-bit programs, but all files created after this change is implemented will be unavailable to older 16-bit programs."

The default value for enabling it is 0 (mine is).
